I think this question is interesting.

We tend to only think on our level and up. What do we believe in. I would like to throw the question back and ask: Do you think that something we think as 'non-sentient' could think of us as a 'god-like creature'?

The titans gave birth and subsequently ingested their children until Zeus /Jupiter freed them after his mother hid him.

I believe in a single Source that manifests itself through the deities we recognize using them as a facet. The facet addressed by the spellcaster relates to the orientation of the deity, for a good harvest one would address the facet, Demeter, the Greek goddess of the Bountiful Harvest.

The Olympian Gods did not worship the Titans. They were the offspring of the Titans, but they were also part of a prophecy given by Gaia, in that they would overthrow Kronos, who then decided to eat all of them to prevent that.

Zeus escaped with the help of Gaia and eventually freed the other Olympians, whereupon they set out on a war for control of the universe.

According to what I have read, Zeus didn't escape Chronos with the help of Gaea. Rhea, Chronos' wife, tricked her husband into swallowing a stone to prevent him from eating her child. Later, Zeus would defeat Chronos and free his brothers and sisters from inside him, and together the Olympian gods defeated and banished all of the titans, trapping them in the center of the earth.

But who knows how the story originally went, really? Greek myths have varied and changed quite a few times over the last 5,000 years or so.

God forces in general, getting away from the exacting stricture of solely greek thought.

In my researches I have found that there are gods, and they are Celestials. But these celestials have a source that spawned them as the Super-celestials. They are the things that made the gods, that which is Ain Sopf, Ain Sopf Aur....and other things that go unnamed beyond the limits that language provides. Its more of a spiritual observation one has to make. As the source manifests in all things even Gods, So to find out what source they come from, one must follow the lines.

Again, what we call myth had a relevance in fact. Modern man coins myth to avoid trying to explain the past and having people raise questions. Many of the stories we have in modern "myth" were borrowed from travelers or from libraries that had been purged of their past knowledge. The names of gods were changed to comply with the local language and after centuries these "borrowed" stories became part of the local lore.
Elders/Leaders of ancient gods had a system not so unlike the ones in place today as far as ranking went. Not so much unlike VR ranks.
"Gods" of any degree did not "worship" their leaders but rather acknowledged their rank, much as a Private would acknowledge the rank of General as opposed to a Captain. The higher in rank, the more respect is given for knowledge in attaining that rank.
It was humanity that "worshipped" the gods in thesense of the word for their power and skills, whether the gods were malevolent or kind, out of fear or respect.
And remembering that languages have different meanings in their words especially where vowels are lacking words that are spelled in a similar fashion may mean something more profound or less profound when vowels are used.

It depends on what one classifies as a "God". Then the questions really becomes "Where did the God come from?"
"Did It always exist?" "Or What created the God?" "Could a God be created?" "Or is the Idea of a God mearly a concept to describe forces of nature that before could not be explained?" "If everything has a begining and an end. Then where do the Gods begin and where do they end?"

I think it might be possible that, in their own way, gods may show a sort of respect to those that created them (e.g. the Greek gods and the Titans), but I don't think that this should be confused with worship.

Well, in most pantheon situations the gods had some sort of king god. Such as the norse had Odin, Romans had Jupiter, and Greeks had Zeus. Vondun, has a king god, and many gods that answer to him. It is a common belief.

That is something I never thought of. Most pantheons are made up of gods and goddesses who are the children of their king and queen gods.

Would or do the children of the king and queen of the panteon worship them? Good question...

In my fath there is really only one god and one goddess there are just meany names for them and when you call upon them you are really just calling the skill that is needed and related to that god/goddess. In fact a lot of them... as with the Celtic gods and goddesses.... were just people who did good things like Bridget or Sant Bridget, I cant remember what she did off hand but she was no goddess/Sant until she died and someone said she was. in some forms of wicca there are no god or goddess at all there are only the spirt of earth(Gaea) and the spirt of space (Mars). So it seems to me that it up each of us to decide for our selves the order/path we fallow/walk and believe in. So if you believe that there are higher gods then the gods then there are. and if you don’t there aren't

I think it depends on your definition of a "god".

If you believe in the Christian tradition of God, then you believe that there is only one and that he is the supreme being, therefore there cannot be a "god" for God to look up to and worship.

If instead you believe in the pagan tradition of many gods and goddesses, then by definition these are hierarchical, therefore there will be one or more who can be placed at the top of the hierarchy, and therefore be "worshipped".

Whether the gods at the top worship some higher being you'd have to ask them ;)

In Greek mythology, with which I am most familiar), above any God or Godess there is Gaia (Earth) and Ouranos (Sky). Everything else is their child. In some cases, if there is a God, it is possible to have a God of their own... But would there be any God in the first place?

thats very one dimensional thinking. that's like saying if a president is answerable to someone else, he's not a president. there are lots of gods. well, there aren't any really, but lets just pretend there are. they have a heirachy. even the christian god must have had a creator because they say that anything that exists must have been created by something else, therefore logically their god must have been created by something previously.

maybe to our pets, we are gods.

First, each of us must ask ourselves, "do I believe in God?" If the answer is no then the question is invalid and the answer moot. If we choose to accept that there is a God then we must define him (or her) for ourselves. An all powerful, all knowing God can, by implication, be assumed to have none above. A lesser god, who has a God, would therefore be a minor deity. So whom is it that you worship, the minor or the major? Just an opinion, but if you are going to worship a God you might as well worship the one who has the biggest set; male or female.

if you deeply into the beliefs of greek or other reliouious people in the region at the time then there was a lot of gods in different levels that had different powers and rankings I suppose is true about that. in modern times as we live in right now most believe in one god and that there wasnt anyone above him in terms of rankings wise.

shadowfever - your response could be construed as hubris. for instance, if you have an issue with a work colleague, you don't go straight to the head of the firm - you take it up with the foreman. if you have a problem with your local council, you don't go straight to the head of state - you discuss it with your local MP. you have to respect the chain of command. if you had issues with a dominar treating you unfairly on VR, you would go to a sentoran, or your housemaster - you wouldnt take it straight to Cancer.

How do we know? In just about every creation Myth, the Gods were beget by something, which was beget by something else. There is a cycle of creation and distruction with no clear begining or end. Several Myths show Gods obeying laws they themselves did not write. Paying homage to great things before asking for thier help.

karnstein-I am new here and certainly don't mean to step on any toes. But I'm not sure I understand how my response to the question resulted in an accusation of hubris.
I certainly wasn't attempting to show overbearing pride or to act in a way that would bring shame on another, an act of hubris which was a crime to the Ancient Greeks.
And it wasn't meant to show a pompous disregard for moral law, perhaps a more current example. If I did, in fact, present myself in such a way I do most humbly apologise.

karnstein-I do think I see what you mean, and I certainly didn't mean to belittle the lesser deities. I work for the Fire Department and I do understand the concept of going through the chain of command. I was really referring more to the more esoteric question as to whether "God" worshipped another "God." But obviously a lesser god would worship a higher authority.

I have a whole thought about gods/goddesses...To give all that power to one being/one layer of beings seems silly...almost suicidal. In an odd way I've always thought of the higher beings being set up sort of like a democracy, with many layers of power so that not only one being has all the power.

Best way I can word that really.

I think it is the chaot (sp?) religion that says we are all God. We each have a part of him in us.....So if you think about it, technically, we are his/her God, and he is ours. it just goes in a cirlce, that never had a top or a bottom. No heirarchy of any kind.

Silly how humans do things at times. They have no clue who or what they truly are. Think about this for a moment: Do angels worship other greater angels or archangels? Do newly departed souls worship their guardian angels? Or do ascended masters worship the creating gods? Worship is given to one source and one only. We tend to be stuck in our own heads too often. We believe that we are the ones doing the worshiping and that there exists something that needs to be worshiped. There is no separate identity. The "gods" know this. So no, the "gods" do not worship other "gods." It would be silly if they did.

As some have dilligently stated already, Gods cannot have Gods.

With all complication set aside, it defeats the purpose of a God! A God is not just a center of worship! ... I can worship a bronze statue representation of the female genitalia, and it STILL wouldn't be considered a God!

A God is supposed to the epicenter of a spiritual belief, and in all definition, is placed above all other enitites. ... Any 'god' placed in between that and nothing would be considered a 'demi-god', 'force of nature', 'angel, 'saint', etc.

You only make the matter of 'polytheism' more confusing than it should be.

Have you ever seen those cartoons where the main character gets transported into the future or something similar and all the creatures view it as a God?

However, where he's from that main character is just a regular...cartoon...who may worship someone/something else. What we may view as a god.

Perhaps that was a lousy comparison, but what I'm trying to say is it all depends on perspective. What we worship could be anything at all, and that anything at all could have its own anything which it looks up to. So yes, a God can have a God because it really depends on what you see as a God...

I'm lousy at this, ha. I have the idea in my head but can't word it the way I'd like. That'll have to do.

Gods and goddesses have always had different levels and powers to their devinity. Lesser deities are common in all beliefs.

well I feel that they would not worship another God, Yet I do believe that they may respect the other god. I mean how can one god rule over another. I know that Mythology has a god for almost everything, therefore controling certain areas, yet again I do not see one bowing or answering to another just giving respect to one another. just how I would be, LOL!

well to me they would not actually be a god if they were mortal, maybe and Idol that the people worshiped like ceasar and other history figures, so there for they would need a god to guide them since they were mere mortal..

could it not be possible that all true gods and goddesses worship the earth and every thing that isn't immortal?

Truly the gods would worship the collection of all mortal life in the universe because that has more power and stature than any sentient being could dream of.

well, according to what i've known.. we have only one god... god of the vampires .. including mortals has the same god.. but we dont initiate ourselves how we treat the god in the same way...

One of the wildest aspects of mystical Christian thought lies in the simple truth that God is everywhere. And if God is in fact everywhere, then God is in all things, and all things are in God. As mystical theologian Matthew Fox writes: "As the ocean is in the fish and the fish are in God, so God is in everything and everything is in God." Theologians call this Biblical position "panENtheism," meaning literally, "all in God." Panentheism is distinguished from pantheism, which maintains that God is all, and all is God. Panentheism is not yet in most dictionaries, but with Google listing over 8500 pages with the word, perhaps its time has come!

my personal belief is this...
think... zeus overthrew Cronos, Cronos, Oranos, keeping that in mind all religious aspects have one 'king' god and others who try to take its place, everyone has a part in god and god in them, as singinghost88 had touched on, however not that there is no one 'god' but that as we evolve in faith and as our spirit becomes stronger we gain a 'seat' in the next level of hieracrchy, as when the next level asumes the responsibility of the persons previous, as the Olympians took for the Titans. and christianity has the holy trinity, God, Jesus, Holy Ghost, then angels, as we evolve in faith our spirits assume our place amung that order, asper the end of time or in the bible, rising of the new Jerusalem. a new world governed under a new diety. one to be on high, and others to affect the other issues of life on earth, as older religions gave these specific dieties indevidual names.
I believe we all work toward this goal, to achieve the next level, and continue the line, so i dont believe gods worship other gods but had at one point.

also i wanted to touch on something that someone said prior about not believing that god whould be so selfish as to hide the fact of predasessors... this comment is not about god but the people in who it was trusted to write his word, Man kind, stories have been writen and re-writen to suit the writer, i find to many things that are either hidden or contradicting to believe a written book, it would be to easy to cover up the idea of another god in order to further their own belief to others.

My opinion, from one of many Chaos Magick Perspectives:

I have a tendency not to be fond of any god who is going to be in direct conflict with my needs/ wants/ desires.
It's cool if Hades worships somebody else, just so long as he gets done what I need him to get done.

The fact is man created the concept of God to explain the universe around him. God is what we perceive him (or her) to be. There can be no definative answer because we will never agree as a group what God is or is not. And it doesn't matter. Everyone's God is a personal thing.

Since God is a concept created by man. Who's not to say that some Gods look to other Gods. It sounds very weird, especially if you apply it to Christianity, because it says there is to be no other God before me. Yet somewhere in the bible [ I can't quote exactly where off the top of my head] it says God is jealous of other Gods. So maybe God believes in other Gods but may not necessarily pray or worship them.

if anybody recalls greek mythology, the titans were more powerful then the gods, aka HIGHER then the gods,
in christianity, God is the supposed highest being, but even in that there are aspects throughout the bible that prove towards the opposite, the fact of the matter is that the bible and christianity as a structure is that it is flawed in its own teachings.
think of the process:

God creates man - man destroys god - Man becomes god

throughout history people have sought to bust the idea of God, through tests, facts, and science, the truth is you cannot destroy God because the gods are in part us, thats why 'belief' and 'faith' are more powerful then science, because everyone has the power of the gods just need to tap into that side of our being.
example - woman lifting car to save child,
or the idea of documented stigmata,

So if man created the concept of God, then he essentially created God, which makes him God. And when man destroys man, which he is certainly trying to do, then he destroys God as well. At which point it all becomes moot because then there is no man or God. Unless of course God really is a woman. And when man destroys man she will be standing there saying, "see, I told you so."

Beside's with all these theories flying around i might as well add my own, what if all these 'gods' were actually aliens messing around on ancient earth? I know it sounds like a storyline straight out of stargate, but hey what the h**l :)

Holy wacko, twisted, me and my lover were just discusiing this the past few nights.

Apparently, (on the subject of egyptian gods and their supposed hierarchical god structure) there was another culture/civilization that the egyptians built on top of back 6,000 years ago! That means:
a) tradtional creationist christian time may be flawed
b) there could have been a way more advanced civilization before egypt (with all their drawings, you would think they saw/mimicked aliens)
-and-
c) being a god simply means being the highest form. so to some pagans, polytheists, and monotheists, their god, or god's go is the highest form. but if you happen to be atheist/scientific like myself, then that means humans being the most advanced as we know it are our current gods, and if there's a higher civilization than our own (atlantis, pre-egypt-aliens!?!?!?), it would mean that would be the gods of our "god" like status, and possibly, everyone elses gods too (depending on their abilities).

Along those lines (i don't know where this would "fit in" in the VR forums, but if anyone else knows, please inform me), it would be awesome to discuss the effect of DMT and similarities of enlightenment and acid trips.

So, we as gods, in my opinions, probably have gods above us.

So how do you define god?

There were certainly civilizations prior to the Egyptians. Whether you believe in Atlantis, or Lemuria or some other myth/legend you must concede that something came before. Maybe life can sprout spontaneously from the universe either by design or coincidence, but civilization does not.
I do believe however that sometimes we waste too much time looking up, whether for gods or aliens, and not enough time looking down. The archealogical record, the oldest of which is probably buried beneath the seas or the icecaps. That is where I think the answers lie, though we may never know what those answers are.

The tradional timeline could very well be flawed. The Egyptians didn'y just invent hyrogleiphics overnight not to mention there are sign of water erosion on the base of the sphinx when there has been no significant water in that part of egypt for over 8,000 yrs plus of course there is a small question od a exact replica of the sphinx on the face of Mars!

Plus of course the added discovery of a high level of radiation UNDER the ruins of a ancient city in India which was mentioned on a previous thread, there is a startling amount of evidence that there was a very sophisticated civiliastion long before the greeks and the egyptians. (sorry about the typo error's, i'm knackered)

I think it is a very interesting question that was posed. Being agnostic, myself.. I admit there are higher powers.. but as to whether the higher power has a power over them, like a hierarchy, I do not know.. Does one god rule and oversee all the gods? Is there more than one -true- god.. I'm not posting this as to 'flame' other religions, merely defining the question further.. If you believe in one god answering to another.. is one god 'more powerful' than another? Is one the -real- god and one merely a facet of him/her? Is there even a truly higher power or are they all just equal?
