I have had a problem with mirrors for most if not all of my life and it has got to the point where I cannot be in a room with a mirror in it unless it is covered over.

I would be interested to know if anyone else has this issue, any personal experiences they might have had with them and any theories they might have about why they are so damn scary!

Could this be an issue for many vampires, and if so, do you think that the myth about vampires not being able to look into mirrors could have a grain of truth in it?

Maybe it's when you look into the mirror your faced with a truth that scares you, I use mirrors to see spirit and tend not to look in them at night. it could just be that you really don't like mirrors and there is no reason behind it. hope this helps a little.

Mirrors are a gate way to another world (define that how you want it’s the way I say it) and every time I look in to it I see something new I try not to look in them for to long because when I do I tend to forget which world is the one I have to come back to

mirrors according to some myths are gateway conduits which specter many different myths

bloody mary for one, that a vampire see's the truth in their eyes and are afraid of that truth

demons jump into your body if you look into their world for too long

ghosts and poltergeist can affect your lives by having a mirror which someone died with their reflection in it, trapping their spirits

any of these myths could serve for a hatred to have a mirror available in the room

I apologize for the previous post ... typo.

As it's been mentioned here before, by RazaelRiezen and others, I believe mirrors are a conduit and that may be at the root of the issue.

You will need to do some soul searching to find that root and expell it or learn from it.

I personally have never had a problem with mirrors. I actually find them quite handy. I do have a pretty close friend that does have problem with them. He also suffers from fairly serious obsessive compulsive disorder. The gut is a genius and very apt at athletics but some very common things in life he can’t handle. One of those things is mirrors. He has a very hard time being in a room with mirrors. He doesn’t even have a mirror in his bathroom. A couple of years he and I went to Whistler in British Columbia to ski over Christmas. The fact that our room had several mirrors in it was a huge issue. The ended up getting covered along with a few other things that bothered him. I think that OCD might be something for you too look into. That is the only experience that I have had with this.

Many cultures believ mirrors as portals to another realm, an object which at the time of death may trap a soul, yet that is the fable. mirrors only interpet what they reflect yet sometimes mirrors are distortations of life for they only see the shell not the inside of the soul.

Lot of self-portraits in front of mirrors on this site.

These self-portraits tend to be gauzy, which I like, but there's also the expression on the person's face --- so personal, full of intent, silliness. We're caught in a moment far different from a photo shot by someone else.

Because it's a private moment, I think.

Vampires are supposed to be dead, not present, hence the absence of reflection in mirrors.

That aspect of vampire lore is absent from modern vampire stories.

I always thought the issue with vampires not liking mirrors was because a mirror would reflect what they truely were, and not the facade they presented to the world. So it showed them as horrible, dead, soulless, parasitic creatures. Which of course no one likes being shown as!

Maybe instead of covering up the mirrors you should gaze deeply in them to see why you feel the way you do. Sometimes, I believe certain things are signs. Are you happy with yourself? Do you have any inner conflict? If you do maybe that's why the mirrors bother you.

Mirrors ARE gateways. Gateways to various different things.

Spirits that want helps sometimes use mirrors. That could be why you sometimes see a face.

Let Me make Myself absolutely clear. Sometimes spirits use mirrors. Usually if a spirit wants help, they'll find another way. Sometimes it's a spirit that needs help either passing to the other side, or one that needs help in other areas.

Iwouldn't however advise that you look for long periods of time in the mirror. It will draw you in, and as said before if you get drawn in, you may not remember how to get back, which would be bad, very bad!

I had an ex that would use mirrors to his advantage. Never told Me how he did it, just did. The day his family came and blessed the mirror putting a cross in oil over it, pissed him off royally. To him it was like closing a portal to another dimention.

The belief that the soul could be caught and trapped in a mirror appears in many other ways. The peoples of northern India considered it dangerous to look into a mirror that belonged to someone else. It was especially so to look into the mirrors of a house you were visiting: when you left, you would leave part of your soul behind trapped in the mirrors, which could then be manipulated by your host to his advantage. In 18th century India, women were seen to wave mirrors before the image of death goddess Kali, apparently to appease her need for human sacrifice with the reflection of a person rather than the sacrifice of a real human being.

There are so many myths about mirrors its hard to say what your "fright" is with them...

This is all very interesting actually...
There is a form of divination, scrying in particular, that uses the method of peering into a mirror to search for anything from an answer to an event, to, as most everyone else has mentioned, communing with spirits. There are popular tales of the visages of "ghosts" and spirit orbs appearing in mirrors even when they are not generally visible to the naked eye. As if the glass acts as a conduit to a world we are normally closed off to.

It could be a matter of perception or an ingrained fear hidden in your psyche that resurfaces in this manner when you look into a mirror. A Jungian approach would be to try and examine why you would feel so adverse to mirrors and what might have occured in the past to cause such a reaction.
Mirrors, as others have mentioned before, have varying meanings for various cultures and creeds. Perhaps try to examine what mirrors mean to you personally and then you might be able to figure out why exactly it is you see and experience these things...

If what you are saying is true, though I am not doubting you, you may be seeing a past life reflection, or your soul looking back at you. The tunnel seems to be an ethereal gateway looking back at you.

The only reason why I say the first sentence, is the fact that most on here when they first start, they tend to role play their way into stupidity. Not saying this is you, but vampires and mirrors is folklore.

I used to have issues with mirrors as well a few years back. but one day i decided i would make this fear or phobia....whatever it was go away and i spent a long time staring into a mirror and "sorting" through everything that i saw. and now i no longer have a problem with them. i believe mirrors can be used to our advantage as well as our demise. it just depends on how you use them.

I have the total opposite reaction to mirrors. I find them facinating. When I was younger, I would use a wall mirror and a hand mirror in an attempt to generate an infinity tunnel (where the two mirrors re-reflect the image back and forth)

I had a facination with the concept of an alternate reality or plane of existance, the thought the I was not seeing my reflection, but actually was seeing through a dimemsional portal at another instance of myself who was performing and acting just as I was, at the exact same time.

Soulshroud,

I very much agree with you, but there is a point about mirrors that I used to make use of quite a bit. To check in on friends of mine, to make sure they were staying out of trouble. Granted I watched my friend so much, that he developed an adverse feeling around mirrors let alone being able to tolerate my pressence when i was there.

Far from role play, this was, when people i glimpsed with my minds eye, came up to me and said, yup, its the same you that I saw, so and such time, looking at us in such a such room. All specific to what I saw.

As for the nature of this post, I haven't a care for what is being discussed, its all mediocre bs, if you can do what I have mentioned, or even if you use the reflective surface as a scrying tool, its only a step to understand what a gateway a mirror really is, let alone being able to fully make use of its abilities.

Self reflections are great starts, as are past regressions through who you were, to who you will be, but those are low level tricks.

It seems people are more content with the mediocre then being truly great at their arts, which is such a shame, because there could be so many great talents rising among the generations.

But thats just my rant for the night.

It's also a possibility that mirrors can be used for such things as scrying(In an emergency) as well as gateways, although it could be the bit about Vampires not seeing their reflection that bothers you, foregoing any mental issues, of coarse.

Mirrors have been a part of the occult for centuries. Perhaps there's a past life issue to be looked at as well. Many can remember bits and pieces of past life experience, and sometimes the past is carried over into the present should the need be great enough.

I see you look at things from my perspective Infernal, the reason I put this post on this thread instead of messaging you, is for the knowledge of the entire Rave.

Continuing...Yes, mirrors are gateways as well as tools for vanity, as society starts to understand this concept, other meanings and wisdom is sure to come about.

Movies themselves are doing a fine job of reproducing certain affects that are true in certain forms. Like the movie the Craft, when the young lady walks out of the mirror, or the reflection is a mid 2 seconds off when the other young lady turns in the locker room scene.

Things can and have been invoked from mirrors and banished into mirrors ie...The movie Constantine. Just as crystals are a useful tool for this practice, mirrors are as well.

Personally, I feel that the mirror is a very powerful instrument, just depends on what you use it for. As infernal has already stated, the protection of friends is a very good start, just remember that the individual will sense someone "watching them". So do not use it on a constant basis.

Yes, humanity, we do seem to have that uncanny ability to read into a subject too much.

I am not claiming expertise in said subject; however, this was folklore from the old country to explain for things that at the time had no known scientific explanation. As for mirrors everyone needs to go to a museum and try to see your own image in a medival mirror. The mirrors were not that good, and generally very small, this is also why most castles and homes of that time did not have windows... technology and cost!

But humanity prefers to romanticise

Large mirrors creep me out. I only use a mirror when putting on make up or making sure my butt doesn't look too big!!! Other than that, I ignore them. I believe that they are a portal to somewhere, or something. I'd rather not know.

i am srry.
that must be hard.
i do not have a problem with mirrors at all.
i am quite narcississtic when i am in front of one.
i want to see myself as "perfect" which is impossible.
maybe you are afraid of what you might see when you look into a mirror.
not your outer appearance but what you see in your self as a person.
do you have any other problems with reflections such as water.
for the vampire thing you can not see back maybe this is "creepy" in away as well.
again though, not literally, i mean not being able to see or know the unknown.

I tend to agree with themusicheart . There have been times when I have looked into mirrors and not liked what I have seen. Not so much seeing my image but seeing what I have become

I never had a problem ( well other than not liking what I saw like most teenagers) with looking into a mirror until I started to scry with one... now I admit if I am caught unaware by the mirror it bothers me.. but once I know its there I am fine. I just do not like being surprised by them.. hmm part of that may still be the not liking everything I see in it lol

most people hate being stared at and also when they are just waking up get startled by their own reflection not fully coherent yet it seems someone broke in thats the more scientific way of looking at the issues with mirrors

Depends for me on what kind of mirror and do I really want to know...?!?! I use a compact mirror (and have one on me) daily...Full length mirror make me think of thing and on thing only...my tummy...and how tall and thin the rest of me is...errr. Otherwise, yeah...I am an Irish dancer, so I am used to studios with mirrors, but then again, that is used to watch our feet and correct our footwork.

I personally am no vampire. But I do have a phobia of mirrors. It's an actual logical phobia recognized by the mental medical community.

As for why I have this phobia, I suffer from Looking Glass Syndrome. The idea of mirrors being doorways to something beyond reality is frightening. The idea of I never know what I'll see in the reflection.

fear of the unknown. i use to be afraid of the dark. now the ocean and bodys of water. the movie THE RING freaked me out. I could not be around the TV without getting spooked. I won't put a mirror facing the bed, because i heard you can spook your soul. Mirrors are used in the art of placement"feng-shui" to repel or bring in energy, depending where the are placed.

One of my former girlfriends did a bit of experimenting with a mirror in the bedroom of the former apartment.

She bought a picture frame, quite a large on at that, a black cover and put it inside said frame. She then placed a mirror on the other side of the room, virtually creating a portal or gateway between worlds.

It obviously attracted attention, as it would turn extremely cold on some nights, and extremely hot on others. Regardless if the A/C was working or not. Things eventually started happening, I will not go into details, but she had me cleanse the apartment...But when I told her the cause of the "problems", she refused to close said gateway/portal.

If you wish, try the same thing...But be warned, it is an opening without protection. Unless you know how to add the protection, be completely warned.

Soulshroude, that sounds like a "have-a-heart" mouse-trap. Condensed energy (ghosts or spirits if you will) are attracted to the black (something that absorbs all color/light). By seeing it in the mirror, the energy becomes "confused" and transfers repetitively back and forth.

I use to have difficulty with mirrors because a part of me refused to see the truth about myself. When I finally understood this mirrors became less of a problem to me.

Perhaps you need to understand the underlying reason for your desire not to see yourself in the mirror.

There is always the belief that when someone dies, you have to cover the mirrors in the room or the soul gets trapped. Probably nothing to that, but still gives me the creeps. Without mirrors how would I do my hair? LOL.

reading the posts on this thread makes me convinced of how much power we have on this site.

dozens and dozens of people have the power to use mirrors to their advantage, and many others have used it to travel to alternate dimensions or for other paranormal uses.

get a life.
everything isn't paranormal...or it would be normal
and everyone can't have every experience
especially when most are just young kids.

those of you who use mirrors.
prove it.
describe me, physically.

I too have issues with mirrors. I had never really given it too much thought until now. I personally had one extremely scary experience in which I was looking at a mirror and my face started to age in front of me to the point where I was starting at my face as it decayed and turned into a skull. Since then, I will not look into a mirror at night, and I refuse to look at a mirror if there is no light other than candles (that's the lighting that was in the room at the time). For a long time I thought it was just my imagination, but the one time I recreated the scenario, I saw the same thing.

My boyfriend is terrified of mirrors, but i think that is due to his slight case of OCD. He covers them or will paint them red if there are to many for him to handle in the room. If its a place that he cant cover or paint them he will just leave. I have no prob with mirrors for the most part. I love them, though I get weirded out in them all the time, but I put up with them.

some of the oldest forms of magic are mirror magic. amplifying or stealing power with mirrors reflecting on eachother. having a problem with them can be attributed to that. i had a friend who refused to deal with mirrors because of some past life regression thing where he found he was stabbed with a part of a broken mirror, so anytime he looked into one, all he would see was being stabbed. very strange. personally, i have no issues with them beyond not liking my reflection.

I see mirrors as a gateway to your soul. They hold a reflection of how you see yourself. It may be that you see guilt, lies, truth, passion... whatever it may be, I guarentee you, you will never see the same person others see.

its true.

I have a problem with looking in a mirror with no lights on, or even little light.

When I was younger I was doing a spell with a mirror. I was using it as a window, to see someone I hadn't seen in a long time. I had candles all around me and the lights off.

I was chanting the persons name and asking for the favor when all of a sudden a face that I have never seen before appeared. It was of a beautiful man with red-blue eyes and this big smile on has face. I think he wanted me to come to him but I didn't stick around to find out.

Well that's my story.lol

it could be a related mental illness or just that the thought of looking into a mirror scares you there are many stories that use mirrors as their subject that can put fear in ones mind, one is the fear that vampires will not have a reflection and the other is that when you look into the mirror you are opening yourself to liliths lair of seduction..there are so many myths and legends and i feel if one hears them long enough as a child can start to believe in them.

I think the biggest problem some people have with mirrors is they don't lie they show us how we really are. If you are not happy or comfortable with yourself odds are you won't like looking in a mirror. They say the eyes are the gateway to the soul and when you look into a mirror you have the chance to look into your own soul.

Mirrors have always fascinated me, we all have a preconception of what we look like, then we see our images reflected at us. I remember, as a teen, getting dressed to go to the roller rink, and when I saw myself in my wardrobe mirror I lost my breath. Every since then I've had more confidence in myself.
