Do Vampires assimilate genetic code into their bodies? For example, if a vampire bit someone with a deafness gene, would they in turn become deaf.

Mythically, the vampire only consumes blood for nutrition - so in that instance would could compare it to a normal human consuming a steak from a cow that was born with red hair. You won't change hair colors simple because you've eaten the meat.

However, mythically the vampire reproduces through feeding as well, so it may stand to reason that if a vampire with blue eyes bit a normal human with brown, the newly transformed vampire may change eye color.

This all depends on what you believe, but wouldn't that be similar to cloning yourself.

In reality - cloning yourself would not necessarily create an exact image of yourself. Because you may have a recessive gene that didn't take during your own production, it may take hold during the production of the gene and cause a different appearance in the clone

What if you had a dominate gene, and it caused a disability similar to autism, would that mean that if you turned someone the person would also receive the dominate gene causing them to react the same way an autistic person would react?

Possibly, yes, but it would have to meet with the probability factors for determining what alleles determine what genotypes. If you consider that the reproduction of vampires is asexual the probability is pretty good - however, that would mean that the vampire who transmitted that gene would also have to be autistic.

The biggest element, I think, is that vampire reproduction can't necessarily be called asexual because they would be genetically altering something that was sexually reproduced. It would rather be similar to something called an "Alternation of Generations" where a sexual creature produces an asexual offspring which in turn produces both sexual and asexual offspring. (I think I got that right). But, the offspring of the vampire can inturn reproduce but only in the same manner as the first.

The vampire poses an exceptionally difficult dilemma, because their form of propagation is unique. Unlike a horse (one species) mating with a donkey (second species) which produces a mule (third species) that is sterile, the vampire (one species) mates (or rather infects) a human (second species) to produce an asexual (not sterile) offspring (same species as first).

My own hypothesis would be that the person who was infected would retain the majority of their own genotypes and phenotypes as long as they were dominant to any genes passed on by the vampire.

I disagree with your hypothesis somewhat... My thinking is that some of the genes (for producing vampires, and the lust for blood, etc...) manifest into the gene's quickly altering the biophysical of that newly produced offspring, and produce the vampire, but while this happening the genes from the original vampire worm their way into the hosts body, creating more genetic material.

Have you ever seen or read blood + it's an anime/manga? It explains my theory of "the virus". I'll try to explain it. While analyzing a newly form vampire they found an extra nucleotide, called the D nucleotide, D meaning disguise, because it disguises itself in the genetic code, by altering the genes. That's the best I explain it. Search Blood + on youtube, you should be able to watch the entire series with subtitles.

Interesting. If the genetic sequence is recoded to include this D gene, it would create a whole new species, like the horse/donkey/mule. The potential fitness of this species depends solely on the survival of its prey - a rather ironic parasitic relationship.

I don't think the genetic material would be complete and perfect until the species can lively solely by its own means. The fact that the vampire needs to feed on something would suggest that the genetic material is neither complete nor perfect.

i do not believe so.
i would think if a vampire bit another, chances are more likely that the vampire's genes would transfer through the bite.
does that make sense...
it seems kind of confusing.

It also depends which one's more powerful because the more powerful your genes, the more chance you can spread the vampire gene to other vampires, and other humans.

rosho - by your theory, could you be a carrier of the gene without actually exhibiting any of the traits?

For instance, a person who is a carrier for the Cystic Fibrosis gene shouldn't breed with another carrier because the chance of producing an offspring with Cystic Fibrosis is pretty good. However, if they breed with someone who is not a carrier, the chance of producing offspring with Cystic Fibrosis is completely impossible.

In theory a vampires need to feed comes from the fact that his or her genetic code is in fact not perfect hence the need to feed. so when a vampire turns a normal human he in facts pushes his or her vampire genetic code on his prey. hence making another copy of the first... after awhile genes from the parent corrupts some what and that is how some illnesses happen where the famlily line has no history of it. but that is just my thought on it. may be i am wrong may be i am right. i have really no way of finding out do i.

it depends on whether or not you believe a vampire changes who he feeds upon, and whether or not he turns them, there are many ideals/dogmas about vampires and turing others however (sadly) there is no REAL explanation for it, however in answer to your question, being an A-level biologist (as i'm sure many others are and probably surpass me) the only way from a scientific standpoint a vampire could inherently change someone is if the vamparic blood caused a mutation in the base triplet code of said persons DNA, if it hijacked the pro-oncogenes, or other such ways, but in lamens terms, the only way a vampire could turn someone is if their blood/saliva or whatnot caused the DNA to change

Well do "normal" humans constantly want and consume blood? Does a "normal" vampire? Then their must be a change probably at the Dna level, I also have another quick theory about their cellular structure, that Vampires, have a lot of some version of Chloroplasts. In which if they go into a Ultra Violet area, their cells rapidly go into multiplication, and they die.

This doesn't explain a lot about how sunlight affects vampires, but it's a start for me.

hmm, i suppose thats biologically viable, but from a purely biological stand point, the only way a vampire would die from that would be a rapidly growing malignant primary tumor that also forms secondary tumors lol but lets not go into that
and you've just touched on my original point what exactly IS a 'normal' vampire, or human for that matter, but i suppose if we put it into a 'normal' standpoint no a normal human would not consume another persons blood

This is all based on the probable fact that a vampire reproduces asexually right? If so, in my opinion, giving one person blood, with a trait, will not reproduce that human into a vampire. You see what I mean? Regular feedings, maybe. For example, if I was to receive some blood from a friend that was a Dominant carrier of a gene, I doubt, that If I was already a Dominant carrier that I'd get the disease.

I wouldnt think so. Say they were real, like hollywood style. Transfering genetics through blood would be like if someone ate a rare steak, would they start mooing and chewing grass? I dont think so. I would say its just for feeding. Reproducing, there has to be an exchange, and dont forget Vamps are supernatural.

Katina - your example would assume that the person who is going to be turned into the vampire is feeding from the vampire. The mode of insemination, if you will, would be through the initial bite. The DNA transfer would be through the saliva. This is how tics transfer Lymes. Their natural anticoagulant which keeps the puncture hole open on you for the tic to feed is what also transmits the disease. A similar situation would occur with the fangs of the vampire. Their saliva would presumably have some form of anticoagulant or venom which would infect the victim with this virus.

However, they can't truly reproduce asexually as this would mean they would have to produce offspring without the use of another creature. Since the another creature is being used it can't really be termed asexual, nor can it be sexual. If another term is not already being used, maybe we could call it altersexual reproduction.

Irony - I believe you're looking at this a little out of order. You're saying that biting into a fish would change you. That would be like saying biting into a vampire would change you. The "venom" or "virus" would not be the transmitted in the vampires blood, per se. Legends say that the vampire must bite you, not the other way around.

So, in all reality, you shouldn't be walking around with gills, there should be fish swimming around with lungs.

I agree with the mythical legends. Supposedly the vampire carries the "virus" inside a pit in the enamel of their teeth. Therefore, I see it as they transmit it through actual contact with someone's else's blood, not with someone else's teeth and their blood.

i dont know i find the idea of a vampire taking on the traits of its prey i dont know. i just dont think that possible for the reason the vampires genetic codes is like that of a virus it takes over the host's body and totally changes it to that of the vampires DNA so in a way the genetic codes of the vampire are imprinted over top of the host or of the prey in that way the prey's DNA is no longer of being.

Fictional vampires: They are magical creatures, and by magic, I don't mean the kind practiced by some here. I mean as in the Unexplained.

In most literature before 1970, the vampire is infused with a special immunity that allows it to resist human disease. They can feed off the diseased and not be affected. Likewise, the afflicted are miraculously cured when they ingest the vampire's blood. Likewise, all handicaps, Tourrettes and twitches vanish.

It is never explained what that magical property is (A. Rice said it was a demon that entered the blood stream of the first vampires, Akasha and her cuckolded consort), or where all that blood goes.

Some old stories depicted the vamp as literally lolling about in blood-filled coffins. Did they regurgitate? Piss it out?
Not explained.

Only with some modern fiction do we get into the subject of a Vampire Vyrus, which would then warrant all this genetic code exploration.

Rosho, I wasn't aware that one could pass Genes through blood, Human or Vampire.
Like I said, you have based this thread on info from Anime, yes you might have read books and so on, but as I stated before, Genes can't be passed through the taking of blood.
Does a Vampire's skin turn black if they bite an African or fat if they bite a chubby person?
I think not.

First of all, I didn't base the question from anime, I based it on my own. Second of all, I never made the conjecture that we would take on the genes from a person we bit, I was just saying that it may be possible. Apparently, it's not possible.

Rosho -
a quote from a post you made

"Have you ever seen or read blood + it's an anime/manga? It explains my theory of "the virus"

now to me, that looks like you were basing some of what you say on info from an anime.

Scientifically, trueblood can come down with diseases and other natural ailments, but it is a bit hard, as our immune systems are a bit more complex than that of a "norm".

No, to my knowledge, you cannot inherit vampirism from blood draw, mayhaps some of the characteristics for a couple of hours, much like you would get high for the same amount of time, but not actually changing.

The only way genetics works is by birth, or effecting the genes, or the scientific ladder. Even if you are born into it, you may not even nessessarily have any of the usual traits. It does skip generations, several in fact...But no, you cannot just turn someone into trueblood.

Theories are just that, until they are proven, but regardless the way these theories are presented, it is never a be all end all. Please be a bit more considerate of others. Just a bit of advice.

First, that's my theory, and not where I got the original question from. Also, I'm basing my theory on parts of the anime, and other books, and manuscripts that I believe are very true about Vampires.
Second, I'm attempting to alter my theory as much as possible based on what I've seen, read, and heard from the world, and everything.

Shadowknight - I like that idea about the STD - well..... not me personally. The only problem that I would have with that is the metamorphosis, as slight as it may be. In order to have certain attributes that the vampire has, a human would have to go through molecular change. First, their teeth would need to grow and the body would need to suddenly generate an allergic reaction to sunlight. The only way to do that is to attatch the STD to the DNA.

Technically the vampire is still a human, but for sake of discussion we think of viral vampires as non-human or as the next step up in human evolution. This is difficult to believe because many of the attributes of a vampire are, well, considered to be better and more developed than humans'. The strength, speed, enhanced mental and/or psychic abilities, the ability to digest human and other blood more efficiently are but a few of the differences. The reason this happens is the basic human DNA is altered by the virus. The virus, we call it V5 is NOT the same virus as HIV5. To simplify, it is transmitted through a simple infection.
This infection is gained either through birth or infection from one who has the virus and passes it on. The child inherits the infection, passed on from the mother or father. The parent may have picked up the virus from some other member of their family such as a cousin, aunt, brother, etc., and thus the infection is passed on to the newborn child. Rarely are both parents infected, i.e., vampires themselves. More often, they are carriers of the virus, in a similar manner to the way a red haired child is born to a family who, for several generations, have been all blond! The passing of the virus to the child from the parent produces an Inheritor Vampire child. The V5 is passed on to the newborn much the same way the AIDS virus is passed from mother to child. In such a child, the virus remains dormant until the catalyst of the onset of puberty. The release of hormones is believed to activate the virus system. The effects of the V5 virus then takes a number of years as the child develops to be completely effective, i.e., active in the system from its previously dormant state in the child's body. As in any infection, the child's immune system tries to fight off the infection, and in many cases, if not most, it succeeds. It is also believed that the blood chemical make up of the individual is also responsible in determining if the child will be fully affected by the virus and thus DNA altered. Not all infected people develop the vampire virus, V5, and thus not everyone born with it becomes a vampire.
That is why we are not hip deep in real Inheritor vampires. The only other way to become a vampire is to be given the infection by someone already infected. This would make the person, the subject, a Classical. As with Inheritors, it takes Classicals quite a long time to develop the full blown virus once infected due to the same reasons; blood chemistry make up and the immune system. Also, not everyone who is exposed to the virus by a Classical will be a viable host for the virus. There is also a theory that a person has to be genetically predisposed to V5.

I disagree, because if someone were to isolate the gene of a vampire in any child, it would cause a struggle. In addition, you are referring to vampires as a genetic mutation, I agree that vampires are a genetic mutation hence the next step on the evolutionary chain (sort of like X-men). However, I do not agree that if a Vampire had sex with a human, the human could birth a vampire. I say that Vampirism is the dominate trait, but can only be found in a select few, sort of like albino's (I think). It also depends on whether the child is female or male.

In addition, you are saying that vampires have a virus that spreads to the next by blood or sex, and at the onset of puberty that the virus comes loose and the battle for human or vampire goes under way. My main problem with this is that vampires don't have a virus, they have a different genetic structure therefore when a Vampire male mates with a human female, and the female has a female child, the outcome of the female child has already been decided.

Also, this is saying that a vampire can have sex with another vampire or human, but you did not refer to the fact of giving blood, whether that alone can change somebody.

Ok,fair enough,I respect your opinion, however, where is your evidence of this altered or different Genetic structure?
And if what you say is true, there would be a great contradiction because a race that powerful and strong would not hide in the shadows and risk its slow demise. They would overtake normal humans and use us for fodder.

The vampire would not adapt with any new genetic codes however if the "food" had any toxins in the blood such as heavy metals, viruses, prions, certian hormones ect. one could suggest that they would have their dna altered by these toxins and begin to change.

Similar to people eating foods with Sodium benzoate or contact with lead paint.

*This is just for arguements sake*
Unless of course there was at one time a single race of vampiric creatures and over the eons they adapted, due to the absorbtion of some DNA frags., turning into many different spieces. Which could be why we have so many myths, of dif. types of vampires, from nearly every major civilization dating back some 5-7,000 years.

xzavier has pointed out a great point, for evelution dictates all things will or have changed from the first light of mother earth and with vampires i would say do the same with feeding and contracting certain dna from the hoist. like the black plague that ripped throughout this country they have proven that stan is in the ancestories of that time to withstand the plague.

See the difference is if we take into the adaption of the fact there are so many different legends, it fits perfectly with in my theory of evolution and genetic code.

If there are different kinds of vampires, that means they must have evolved like other creatures, to fit their needs (Charles Darwin). In other words they mutated their genes.

Common Darwinian theory alone doesnt work, you must have an outer intelligence guiding the adaptations. How can I change my genes? Even if it were to benifit me. I, we, cannot alter our genetic code without prior knowledge and physically changing ourselves useing technology. Pure evolutionary theory is on it's last legs.

Even if they could incommpase foriegn DNA into their bodies the shear numbers of raw DNA to Active "Good" DNA is mind boggling.

And what in fact happens is not
