How does one go about rating events or choices in their life as good or bad?
i think it the way you conscience feels after you make the choices in your life
Good and bad are relative to each individual and we should be careful to not assume our own code of ethics is inherently right and others wrong.
I believe that it is what people put in their heads as good or bad. If someone they care about was to tell them something they did was bad, in turn they may start to believe it was bad. Same with good.
Well, that simply depends on the individual. And not to be mean, but it's kind of common sense - just go with your gut feeling on the situation. That right there should be enough to give you an answer.
It it isn't, weigh the pros and cons of what happened. More pros = good, more cons = bad.
Everything that makes you feel bad and sorry cuz you did it, its rated as bad. Also some things that you do it with concense and you know they are bad, but have no regret for it.
According to this, everything rest is good.
An event if life is rated and ranked good or bad by the feeling it gives you mostly. Personally situations and events in my life are neither one or the other. They all have pros and they all have cons.
Wow... that's the big question, isn't. Allow me to try to condense Philosophy 101 into a couple of paragraphs
The real question isn't what is good or evil, but what is it that makes something good or bad. Is "Custom King" as Herodutus wrote, or is there an inherent sense of good within every human being?
My opinion is that it's a little bit of each. The reason simply being that while different customs and religions have thier own set morals, they all still have those morals. I think that because humans instinctually have a need to set themselve guidlines and limitations, there will always be a good or evil instinct.
An individual rating of good and bad. Each person has their own sets of beliefs and what range is good and the range of bad...
to me, helping someone cross the street, pick up packages is a good thing. Slipping one of those packages in your own pocket is a bad thing and negates the good just done.
LumiyaOfTheSith, under that logic does doing a good deed cancel out a bad one?
Yes, but perhaps more than one would help to negate a negative one.
The easiest way I have learned, is when you get that butterfly feeling within your stomach, a paranoia of "is this wrong" feeling. Your body usually lets you know when something bad is about to happen. It is up to you to reply to the situation accordingly.
Well yes, but is that "butterfly" feeling a result of human instinct or is it a result of entrained custom?
Both, I should think...As any manipulated good vs evil trait is both learned and inherited...As with many other attributes of awareness.
Not everyone gets that feeling nor can really care what they are doing is wrong. Some get a rush out of doing something wrong.
They still know they are in the wrong, since they want to feel the "rush".
True, never was not agreeing with you.
there are those that do not know the difference, even from a young age and will continue and get worse as they mature.
Yeah, I understood where you were coming from, just had to add that bit of information for the benefit of the Rave.
Even though many individuals do not know the ways of right and wrong, examples being dhamer, gacy amongst several others...But what if they did know the differance and denied the fact. For the benefit of the pleeding of insanity?
The excuse factor is a large portion for many criminals past and present. Does not mean without our perceptive eye feeling what they feel, deems us fit to say...These individuals did not know the differance.
Mostly it's a question of time, it's only when we look back after knowing all the details we can also see the full picture as it were.
it depend on how u react towards it like if u react alright and dont flip out its good it also is on the outcome that comes after it happend depending on if it is good or bad
I rate things good or bad on how it feels in my heart or my mind
Questions to ask.. how did it make you feel.. was it of any use.. and would you go there again. Then you will have your answer.
well I feel it is how you feel about the situation, person, item etc. I mean you know what is right and wrong from a very young age with or without any guidance , I feel it is just bred in us from birth.
So you go with what you know. good and Evil is everywhere so it is not like you do not know the differences. Also we all have a built in gut reaction I feel ...
Honestly things I have already done are in the past. The choices I made were either good or bad at the time I made them. If they were bad, I learned from them (mostly) and will not repeat them again.
Your whole life is made up of the choices one makes - so whether it be good or bad - own it.
From a practical standpoint by how much you learn or grow from an event or situation and by how much you come up or how much you loose.
In my life, i judge good and bad things as to the effect it has on others and me. I made alot of bad choices in life and paid the consequences. I think "good" choices brings harm to none.
If you mean on a percentage base...its 50/50 and equal amount of good and bad happens daily. Others have different perceptions those and then there are those over dramatic people that will always take things way out of proportion but eh...what are you going to do about it?
There is no good or bad just opinions and the consequences there of .....
you could say that there is a built in function that makes you feel good or bad about yourself but in the end the ones left are right cuz the others is simply gone
If you belive in the spiritual sence then its all written down..
other than that most animals doesen't desire to kill there own kind simply becourse they will become exstinct with time wink wink* and those that do kill there own is mainly for survival purposes.. like the the male lion, killing the young of a taken over pack, cuz if he dosen't he won't get nothing
and his genes die out ..just my 2 cents.....
I dont necessarily 'rate' my choices good or bad generally it's whether I made the right choice. Sometimes if you give yourself the pressure of the positive-negative pendulumn all the time than if your choice swings to the bad than it will pull you too much towards that if you make a wrong choice than it's easier to correct than to make a bad choice good.
True PolishSiren.
Sometimes you make a choice that turns out bad or negative but your intent was not that, just the outcome.
A person willingly getting behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated vs. taking eyes off road to pick up something dropped in the car or changing radio stations and causing an accident.
Depends on the individual. Some choices that are right for one person can be wrong for another and vice versa.
Depends on the person and their beliefs. You can't really narrow it down.. there are the seven deadly sins but not everyone follows them and believes they are really sins.
Hmm, tough one *smiles* I'd ask a Dominar. For me, well it boils down to personal choice but sometimes you can only see the results of a decision you made later on in life. Sowing seeds may not always reap an immediate award.
With regard to good and/or bad choices, a good rule of thumb I have found to employ prior to making a choice is what I call the "Law of Short-term Gratificication VS. Long-term Benefits."
All things being equal... any action taken for short-term gratification almost always sacrifices far-greater long-term benefits, often resulting in very negative long-term consequences, and is always a very foolish choice. Contrariwise, any action taken for which the long-term benefits are considered and found to be more important than any short-term sacrifice or even discomfort is always the best choice.
Whether we are talking about actions taken strictly for short-term gratification such as casual sex, addictions of any sort, crimes, or simply poor decisions of less serious long-term consequences such as, say, procrastination, impulse buying, this Law applies equally well: when long-term gain is sacrificed for short-term gratification... you will pay a far heavier price in the long run than you will ever find yourself benefitted in the short-term and will come to regret such decisions at some point.
To the contrary re: actions for which short-term gratification is sacrificed for long-term gain... the exact opposite is true, regardless the action or its importance... such as: saving money, exercising, developing meaningful and rewarding relationships, not becoming addicted to vices, seeking an education, achieving goals in life, helping others, defending truth and standing up for what is right even when contrary to current public opinion, generally resisting urges and impulses and learning mastery over self thereby,... and on and on and on. All of these build strength, character, integrity, and honor... and will ultimately result (again, all things being equal as there are surely some exceptions to every rule where unforeseen circumstances or random chance enters in as it always does in everything) in far more beneficial results and true lasting happiness and permanent personal self-esteem.
You certaintly put a whole lot of thought into your actions Upir, basically 'tho I think it boils down to the morals of the individual.
ooops, did I really put an I'd in my last post sighs, oh well damn typos!! everyone does them sometime or another I guess.
well on vampire rave rating something good means giving a ten rating something bad would mean giving an 8. so be more optimistic and rate good to bad in real life a 8-10.
(slight hint of irony)
LMAO HotTubMolly!!!..your humour is a ^hoot^!! it's as easy as 1, 2, 3 ..well I think so anyway, knowing how to judge good or bad is basic instinct.
or you could say just to be evil..hehe if you kill someone blood flying in all directions and you had the time of your life doing it ...its good. if you later regret it then it becomes bad but if you keep the first thought it stays good then you go to prison that is bad, but if the act of murder was good to you in the first place then its a matter of good leading to bad becourse others have made laws. ....So don't regret anything and nothing will ever be bad ecept.. grades, talkshows, expired food/milk running out of toilet paper ect ect...
I think for most it is their gut instincts. Thats what it is for me, I trust my own intuition.
Much like animals, we are born with built in survival instincts. You will know when something doesn't or didn't feel right.
For me its simple.
If it is bad, people will lock you up, beat you, or kill you if you do it.
If it is good, people will lock you up, beat you, or kill you it you do it, but they will speak about how kind you were.
The world is always a cruel, bad place.
Only our little sparks of existince help dull the pain.
We all rate "Good or Bad" by how we perceive it to be. Nothing is good or bad until we label it as so, and each person views life different than the next...
It is a typical nuture vs nature question. How much of it is due to training and education compared to inherent ability to tell right from wrong. I think some of both. Most humans have some compasion and would tend to know when things were bad.
Would some of these responses not prompt the question of how would good or bad be rated when applied to warfare. Saddam Hussein is dead and people in Iraq are suppossedly very pleased with our efforts. In this instance, killing can be looked at good and a dictatorship has ended... how would this applyto the instant gratification, and the long term benefits equation?
I would say that it is the way it makes the person feel afterwards, and the consequences that follow the action. If the action brings about positive feelings and consequences, it would be good. If it brings about negative feelings and consequences, it would be bad.
I think it all begins at the person's primary intention before he/she committed a particular act and what motivated him/her in the first place. I mean, we are, after all, conscious beings so we are presumably aware of the things we do.
What's bad to one person, is good to another....all in one's perception!
hehe hottubmolly - that's great!
well, it is all just on how you view things.
people think good is all lollipops and sugardrops. And bad as the black licorice that everyone discards.
To me, there is no "good" there is no "bad".
They're only words that a persons mind react to right away, to describe how they feel because they do not have a more wide spread vocabulary to be able to determine the feeling or thought of ones actions or course of events in their lifes.
i dont rate things lol like that.
ther are bad and good things that happen, just its not good to to dwell on specifics like that in my opinion....
Alot of life just IS
i have a game called black & white, basically your a god and can both ways. it starts your in space n you hear prayers, i went down to start people to make me stronger by them worshiping me to gain power.
this poor farmer had a bolder in his garden so he coulnt grow food to feed his family.
his prayer was to remove it and he promised to worship me.
so i picked up the bolder and dropped it on his house lol
god works in mysterious ways lol
the point is man invents whats good n bad ... a killer to you is a good soldier in my books and a do gooder a bad thing as there in your business being controlling...
It's all about your personal perception of how events in your life turn out out.
I think it all depends on the person really what I see as something bad someone else may see as nothing really.
I don't make choices based on Good or Bad, i don't believe in Good or Bad. I believe in Right and Wrong. We can all make right and wrong choices, but i really do not see how a choice can be either good or bad. We make a choice, why should it be a good or bad choice. For example, a man catches his wife in bed with another man, he loses his temper and kills the man.
As far as he is concerned he made the right choice. He may well feel remorse for making that choice, but does that mean it's a bad thing?
In my opinion, the only good or bad is determined by other people, not yourself.
Mener
I use to regret decisions or choices I had made in the past. Thinking they were bad or good to no avail... I have since learned that every decision I have made has led me to my present situation...So good or bad they always brought with them some lesson or challenge I needed to helped me grow. So I've come to realize it's all good. And I like what I have become..
I think that there is no good or bad. Just what we want and dont want.
The general concept of good or bad would have to come from a consensus established by society. But I'm more individualistic, so I'd still go with the idea that it would depend on your intention of doing it in the first place.
another relatively stupid question. our choices are determined to be good or bad purely by their outcome. nothing else dictates whether a decision is right or wrong. in time, our decisions will show themselves to be good or bad. but we have to play our choices out to their end.
It all depends on where you take it inside of yourself. OYu can have extreemely bad things happen to you but if you take what you have learned and use it to better yourself than it turns into a good thing...and vice versa.
there is no such thing as good vs bad or good vs evil
example the christen say the pagans are evil ,and the pagans say the christins are evil
so whos evil
good and bad are relative to the situation and your outlook on that situation
The way you do it is by choosing a system of believes and then judging yourself accordingly.
excactly it all boils down to maters of how you look at things i agree whole heartedly
but wait so dose that mean that the people in africa who rape new born baby girls sto cure aids are evil or are they good
good and bad i think the way u feel is the way it is....
Depends on the individual...
Whats good for me might be bad for you and vice versa.
Now its another story when what you do affects others. Then its a whole other criteria.
I think that good and bad depends on your own view of things not necessarily that there really is a good or bad
oh i don't know... there are some instances where examples of Bad & Evil are pretty clear, despite one's point of view. For example; Slavery.
The topic of good and bad is over done. It is also not proving to be discussed other than it depends and there is no good or bad. Whence the thread can be closed.
