Im very knew to all this but I had a question on OBE. Is OBE the same as astral projection? If so can you tap into someone elses mind and communicate with them in that manner? If so how does one go about in doing it? I dont know if the questions make sense but figured Id like to get some information from everyone since everyone here is very knowledgeable in many topics.

In my opinion they are different and the difference is that you can't control wether or not you have an OBE or what you do during one but AP you can control.

I've always thought that Astral Projection is a gift, like clairvoyance or telepathy, and something you can learn to control while an out of body experience is something that you didn't intentionally want to happen.

The term "out-of-body experience" is usually used for those who nearly died, but their spirit came back into their body before the connection to their physical form was completely severed, as is what happens supposedly when we die. Astral projection is a skill people can learn where we separate from our body and are able to travel where ever we wish in spirit form. They are very similar, we just have a bit more control over what happens during astral projection then the other.

Sometimes with possession, it may be caused by the OBE of others trespassing into differant bodies. OBE does lead to astral travel, you just need to hone the technique.

2 different things...OBE is a random happening, like a near death experience or to much LSD. And you have no control over it. A A.P. is a manual OBE that takes you further into the astral realm. This is done by someone who knows what they are doing like a Buddhist monk. And they have the ability to interact with each other in the astral realm.

OBE happens when you have a near death experience but astral projection happens because you're focused and are controlling it.

OBE - Out of Body Experience - it was answered further up :-)

I would describe an OBE as an umbrella term which can cover many things.

Astral projection is a type of OBE which can be controlled by the practicioner, and yes, it is possible to communicate during an AP, with practice.

An NDE, or Near Death Experience, is another type of OBE mentioned here, in which a patient close to death is brought back, and yet can remember seeing their body from above and usually report a white light, lovely voices and possibly loved ones who have passed on.

That's just my take on it anyway :-)

RavenEyes stated the differences between astral projection and out of body experience quite well.

One you can control and travel - AP and the other OBE is when you have literally died or in a deep coma and your spirit/soul rises out of the body.

My understanding is that with practice, one can control the astral projection. Experience tells me anytime I have had out of body experiences that I have no control of removing myself from the experience.

My point exactly Meeper. I can't control it. Sometimes I "wake" up with a very strange detached feeling and then upon remembering my experience I realize that I was some place else with no control.

I believe astral projection is a dream like state where you visit other places and people. An OBE is an experience of feeling like your physically there, such as floating above yourself and watching yourself sleeping.

In some cases, some people believe astral projection and out of body experiences to be the same thing. But for me they do not hold the same company.
With out of body experience you simply just do not feel you are yourself. With astral projection you are pushing your spirit outside of your physical confines.

Actually an OBE and Astral Projection are not the same thing.

When they originally began to talk about this was because of a book that came out in the 1970s by Robert Monroe and he coined it OOBE and it has since been shortened to OBE. This merely is leaving the body. In otherwords the etheric body leaves the physical body but it doesn't have to go into the astral to do that. Astral projection means you go to the astral plane and that can be done purposefully so some say or in a dream state. Many have said over time if you feel yourself or see yourself flying in your dreams you are are out of your body. Its all anecdotal so I couldn't say.

Some of this was prior to Monroe because the Theosophists were into many things and some of their names for things were slightly different but basically the same thing and had a lot to do with popularizing some of these ideas which later got tagged as "New Age".

There have been supposedly many ways to access someone's mind but again we get into the area of belief. One way is via dreamwalking.

The term OBE is out of body experience - although one is considered to not be attached to your body it does not mean you can enter another's mind at this point. OBE is usually a phrase used for a near death experience.

Astral projection is something that most of us do whether we realize it or not is another story...However, some of us strive to gain control over this. As one gains control you could slip into another person's dreams or even bedroom (sorry Dawn, didn't try to scare ya) however, I am not sure about entering one's mind. To me that sounds more like a possession.

Perhaps OBEs happen when the Conciousness steps out of the body the spirit still "mantains the body"when the spirit leaves we die but some people may harness this to include the soul as well perhaps when the body is stablized the conciousness can return to the body
I got to thinking this after I relized I slipped out before My body crashed and got back in when it was stablelized .

Hmmm that would have to be syced out and well planned to be first on the same frequency and the levels of displine required would require you to start when you where at least 12 years old if you "dreamed concsiously before"you have a chance but only with a few skills.

Robert Monroe, founder of the Monroe Mind Research Institute in Virginia, began studying altered states of consciousness in 1958. At that time, Monroe was a succesful businessman, having graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in engineering, and a second one in journalism. As an executive of a radio station, Monroe led a busy and normal life. That same year Monroe began studying what happens to consciousness while the body is asleep. His first experiments consisted of listening to tapes that contained various types and combinations of sounds. He researched out of body experiences (oobe's) until his own death. In his 3 books (Journey Out of Body, Journeys Beyond the Universe, and The Ultimate Journey), Monroe shares what he has found after years of researching, studying, and experimenting using most often his own experiences as reference and/or basis for his observations. His notes are very sober and clear, and he manages to transmitt clear, impartial, 'reporter' type descriptions. His narrations are consistent and well organized, and his writings slowly go into details about life, death, and much, much more.

This man is considered the foremost authority on this subject of his time and when he first published they called it OOBE and it is the same as OBE. They later dropped the extra O. That is all it is. I am more familiar with the first one because I was alive when he did his research and released the books and heavily involved in the occult and metaphysical community as well as spiritualism. I was even a member of IANDS in the mid 90s so yeah they use the terms and both are viable but it appears the OBE one is used more frequently now. I moved on past that topic a long time ago so I wasn't aware people dropped the extra O that was used at that time.

Out of body experiences (OBEs) are those curious, and usually brief experiences in which a person's consciousness seems to depart from his or her body. Yes they associate them at times with NDEs but its not the only thing they are assoicated with. Many more people are fascinated by this topic now than back then. It was sort of fringe at that time.

Since I can only do one day at a time without going to far ahead ....im still very anxous. Does anyone know if I can travel and visit someone that is still alive like visiting through drea,s? Or is that purely fiction.

O.B.E. is usually not done with controll but thru sudden death/accident. Soul leaves the body(you dead). Astral is the mind leaving for a "break" in time. Your soul is still in your body. Astral takes time & much practice but can be done.

I would agree with Raven Eyes. An OBE is that. Where someone has passed or close to passing and their soul leaves their body. I did have this experience during child birth as I had pulled the IV out of my arm and lost large amounts of blood. The Astral Projection though, I have never experience but would love to learn the method of doing so.

I'd say the mian difference is control. Atra project tends to be controlled, where as OBE is spontaneous.

Also distance. OBE tends to be the imediate viscinity of the body, or an entirely different realm (ie the gates of heaven, etc) where as Astral Project is into the astral plane, or while linked to the body around the world!

I'd say they are similar but sufficiently different phenomina to be considered in isolation of each other.

I agree with RavynSteel OBE is an umbrella term used to describe NDE and other forms of Astral Travel.

Now I'm about to lay on you more information that you care to know on the subject.

I would say from personal experience with both types of OBE's (NDE and Astral Projecting) and through occult learning that they are in simplest terms the same thing only different vocabulary is being used from different spiritual backgrounds. In both situations the conscious, which is actually more closely attached to the physical body than the Higher Spiritual planes leaves the physical body. In different traditions these planes are know by various names. If you're using terms from the Astral body and its corresponding realms as a framework, the conscious could still be perceived in the ethereal realm within your corresponding etherical body. Within this frame work your etherical body is the closest spiritual body to your physical body. From a Kabblistic framework the closest relationship would likely be the Neshamah (intellect). From both perspectives one can or could learn to perceive etherical bodies or Neshamah. The artistic imagery of a halo is derived from this, except it actually can be seen around the whole body not just the head and not only from humans.

One's Higher spiritual bodies have no comprehension of self. I'm talking about your lower and higher astral bodies when talking about astral projecting and from a Kabbalistic point they would most likely be related to Chayyah (divine life force) and Yechidah (uniqueness). From the Kabbalistic point there are layer upon layers of aspects for each part of the a persons body and spiritual structure. This is quite in depth and would require a life time learning to begin to understand. I barely understand the basics. I will say that I don't hold much stock in what the spiritualist traditions or what Wikipidia divulges as being fact because they are only piecing together meaning from scraps of information learned from older occult sources... mainly the Kabbalah.

One can, with focused learning, meditation and practice learn to play and journey in lower spiritual planes. For the most part this is not such a big deal and can be a lot of fun; however, on a very serious note if one is going to earnestly start practicing this type of spiritual travel it should be mentioned that one should learn how protect themselves. Against what? You might ask. Deamons that's what.

There are stories scattered throughout the Talmud and the Midrash which speak of deamons. They are basically described as being part physical and spiritual beings. And unlike angels who are completely spiritual beings with no physical bodies and only exist in higher spiritual worlds, we could be able to perceive and even unfortunately have interaction with deamons on the physical plane and certainly the lower spiritual planes. The Kabbalistic reason for their state of being is because they were created on the last day of creation and right before Hashem rested and were thus created in an incomplete form. On a kabbalistic note they like angles would be below mankind on the spiritual hierarchy. They like many people want to elevate up the spiritual ladder and there is only one way for them to do so and this is by being a leech of sorts, a spiritual leech. They are drawn to higher beings like a moth to a flame (higher meaning closer to Hashem and all humans would be considered higher beings compared to them) and they can through various forms of possession stowaway in a human being. I'm certainly no expert in this area of study but I do have more than a layman's understanding. There are many documented accounts of deamon encounters and deamon possession. This crosses many cultural/religious beliefs and practices. This is one of the reasons why rabbis and priest will never discuss these types of occult studies, such as, astral travel among the general public and even among the majority of those within their faith. If you don't believe me go ask a rabbi or a Priest if he knows this to be true. If they don't immediately brush you off they will acknowledge it as true and then ask them to tell you more about it. You will find that the discussion will go no farther or will based in generalities.

But I know you're probably like me... you have to know more. I'm not really at liberty to discuss certain things I've learned with the general public either and especially over the Internet; however, I will point you in the right direction and also tell you about a few very good books on dealing with this topic. They're listed at the end of this reply.

I posted on another similar thread one of these books to help get you started and a relatively easy technique to practice with. I'll re-post it here as well, enjoy:

If you want to learn to play in this realm and the other higher astral realms there is a great book call “The Art and Practice of Astral Projection” by Ophiel. It's small easy to read and very informative practical guide to astral projection. I've since read other books on the subject and many of them make a confusing mess of a relatively easy to understand concept. What we're dealing with here are simply other parts of one's own body and the spiritual planes associated to them. Once you experience astral travel for yourself for the first time and after you get over the initial "Holy Shit" reaction you will definitely want to learn more about it and how to make it happen again. This book is simple and has some suggested techniques to practice that make the process easier.

The best technique I've found for learning how to astral project and how to be in control of your astral journeys is actually quite easy. I'm not sure where I learnt it, I think it was from Ophiel's book but I'm not sure. Anyway, basically one should strive to become what it called a lucid dreamer. I can here you now, “What the hell is a lucid dreamer?” A lucid dreamer is basically one who is in control of their dreams. “How does one become in control of one's dreams”, you ask? By first realizing you are in fact dreaming while you are dreaming. This is easier said than done but it is attainable.

In a months time, many people only remember a small fraction of their dreams. It was suggested to keep a dream journal. This is simply a journal you keep by your bed and as soon as you wake up immediately write down everything your remember of your dreams and do this each night. If you don't remember anything write "I chose not to remember".

You'll find that, over the period of several months of this practice, you'll consistently start to remember more of your dreams and you will also remember more of those dreams. The interesting thing about using this technique is you will indeed start to have lucid dreams. The first few times this happens you'll most like snap right awake. “Holy Shit!” Eventually you'll be able to relax and when the realization comes you'll be able to continue with the dream without awaking and finally the fun part... you be able to take control of the dream.

For myself I found that I was not able to astral project until I could master lucid dreaming. Astral projecting is not a easy thing to do and I would be suspicious of anyone who claims otherwise and says they do it all the time. Once you get the hang of lucid dreaming learning to use your astral bodies to journey outside of your physical body is the next step. It can and will happen but it take a lot of patiences, determination and meditation. Actually lucid dreaming is a form of astral projecting.

The first time you experience it, just like the first time with lucid dream, you'll most likely snap right back into your physical body as soon as you realize it is happening. There is no mistaking when it happens, it's not like you'll sit around and think to yourself "Gee, well I sort of felt something". Let's say you're setting there meditating and trying to focus on leaving your physical body. Then you all of sudden stand up and walk across the room but something fills funny so you look back to where you were sitting only to see your physical body still sitting there clear as day. "Holy Shit!" You snap back in it. That's what it's like. The first time is very jarring. The very hard part is, once again, learning to control the "Holy Shit" response and just relaxing in order to go with the flow and really start to journey.

Books of interest on the topic:

“The Art and Practice of Astral Projection” by Ophiel

“Dybbuk” by Gershon Winkler

“The Legends of the Jews By Louis” Ginzberg - It's full of references to deamons in the Torah. Probably only useful for the serious Torah scholar.

Thank you robotech on that, well done.

There are all those people that have died and have floated above their body, only to find themselves sucked back in when they are revived. Some can remember what they experienced during that time and others just know they were looking down at themselves and not much else.

ravensteel summed it up succinctly.. I have astral travelled.. but as to OBE.. well, that's something I have no knowledge of doing.. concsiously.
..so I take it that one is, or can be a concsious action: the other is not.

Whether or not it's a conscious action, medically induced or some thing else the mechanisms and structure are the same. I would not argue that they are known by different names and should be but in the end we are talking about an individual's spiritual body or at least a component of one's spirit detaching from the physical world and experiencing parts of lower spiritual worlds. In aspects this also happens everytime one dreams.

Exactly what Angelus and Robotech said... one is a conscious effort to detach and travel while the other is accomplished with no conscious thought to do so.

OBE's i believe are not usually wanted, and im sure its possible for someone to tap into your body mind and soul spiritually, to temporaryly control somone, but not for very long periods of time.

OBE's can also be linked with what is called Lucid Dreaming and is the same thing except you have control and remember your journey.....

no, they're completely different. in astral projection, you usually have some sort of control over what you do. however in an obe you usually are looking down upon something

Diffrent things you could go on line and i'm sure they will show you a list of things for OBE but as the paranormal way i believe it's like an out of the body experiment or something like that.

obe are out of body astral projection is done at will. there are scientists it germany doing comparitive research on what goes on in the brain while a person has. NDE OEBS astral projections and the shamatic death trances. Apparentlly the brain activity (what synapsis are fireing which ones are not ect) is nearly identical in each state. The only major difference seems to be how the states are attained. Holger kalweit has published info on it if interested there are others that have published info too but dont have the names handy

Much to the agreement of many, I don't beleive you can control an OBE... All though Astral Projection may technicly de defined similiar to an OBE and under technicality is itself an OBE it is just more taught/learned/inheritted than other OBE's and the ability to control and manipulate is much easier... Like wise readily available. I myself have had intentional Astral Projection and also had unintentional and also unwanted OBE's. They can also bring about physical manifetation to an extent in some individuals.

Main article: Sleep Paralysis

OBEs are sometimes reported to be preceded by and initiated from a lucid dream state, though other types of initiation—ranging anywhere from immediate and spontaneous experiences, to conscientiously controlled and pre-meditated methods (examples of which are widely available in all the most popular books on the subject)—are also reported. In many cases, people who claimed to have had an OBE reported being asleep, on the verge of sleep, or already asleep shortly before the experience. A large percentage of these cases referred to situations where the sleep was not particularly deep (due to illness, noises in other rooms, emotional stress, exhaustion from overworking, frequent re-awakening, etc.). In most of these cases, the subjects then felt themselves awake; about half them noted a feeling of sleep paralysis.[4] Some subjects report having had an OBE during near death conditions.

There appear to be two common forms of such lucid experiences. The first involves lucid dreaming, where the subject is immersed in unrealistic worlds, or in a modified form of the reality with impossible or inconsistent features. A second experience is of a more physical nature where the environment is consistent with reality; this is often called an etheric or ethereal experience. This type can be frightening, as extremely realistic physical sensations may occur, often including magnetic and vibrating phenomena, loss of balance, and confusion. The person believes he has awoken physically and panic can be caused by the realization that limbs appear to be penetrating objects.

The OBE may or may not be followed by other experiences which are self-reported as being "as real" as the OBE feeling; alternatively, the subject may fade into a state self-reported as dreaming, or they may wake completely. The OBE is sometimes ended due to a fearful feeling of getting "too far away" from the body. Many end with a feeling of suddenly "popping" or "snapping" and sometimes a "pulling" back into their bodies; some even report being "sucked back" into physical form. A majority describe the end of the experience by saying "then I woke up". However it's worth noting that even those who describe the experience as something fantastic that occurs during sleep, and who describe the end of the experience by saying "and then I woke up", are very specific in describing the experience as one which was clearly not a dream; many described their sense of feeling more awake than they felt when they were normally awake. One compared the experience to that of lucid dreaming, but said that it was "more real".

People often report having these experiences after suffering from traumatic experiences such as motor vehicle accidents. They are able to recall the accident as if observing from a location outside the vehicle.

[edit] Induced OBEs
Some people have attempted to develop techniques to induce OBEs:

Attempting to fall asleep without losing wakefulness. This method is generally believed to be what causes involuntary OBEs. Inventor Thomas Edison was known to use the sleep state to tackle problems while working on his inventions. He would hold a rock above a metal bucket while sitting in a chair, and let himself fall asleep. This would cause the rock to fall into the bucket and wake him up.[citation needed] Deliberately teetering between awake and asleep states is known to cause spontaneous trance episodes at the onset of sleep which are ultimately helpful when attempting to induce an out-of-body experience, as reported by Robert Monroe and Robert Peterson.[citation needed]
Deep trance and visualization. The types of visualizations vary; some common imageries used include climbing a rope to "pull out" of one's body, floating out of one's body, getting shot out of a cannon, and other similar approaches. This technique is considered hard to use for people who cannot properly relax. Common sensations can arise such as deep vibrations, impressions of very high heart rate (when it actually is in a relaxed state) and these sensations are likely to cause anxieties. A good example of such a technique consists of the popular "Golden Dawn Body of Light Technique".[citation needed]
Audio/visual stimulation intended to bring the subject into the appropriate state.[citation needed] The use of binaural beats to induce theta brain wave frequencies was observed as effective by the Monroe institute (and corroborated by others). Another popular technology uses sinusoidal wave pulses to achieve similar results. The beta/theta simultaneous brainwave patterns were also observed as effective, apparently easing the lighter sleep condition. The theta frequency is observed monitoring brains of dreaming patients, notably in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep, while the beta frequency range is that of normal, relaxed awakened individuals. It is believed that one of the unsuspected powers of the drumming of the American natives during religious ceremonies caused the brain to shift among frequencies to become more receptive to the "other worlds" using similar means. See Brainwave synchronization.
Chemically induced experiences. OBEs induced with drugs are sometimes considered to be hallucinations (i.e., purely subjective), even by those who believe the phenomenon to be objective in general. There are several types of drugs that can initiate an OBE, primarily the dissociative hallucinogens such as ketamine, dextromethorphan (DM or DXM), and phencyclidine (PCP). It has also been reported under the influence of tryptamine psychedelics including dimethyltryptamine (DMT), and ayahuasca. Being under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs are commonly referred to as being in a psychedelic state. Salvia divinorum has been known to produce symptoms in which the user is said to be able to leave their bodies and travel to many places at once. Many users also claim that they feel as if their "soul" falls out of their body.
Methamphetamine has also been known to cause OBEs, not in itself but through lack of sleep. It has been reported that it felt like the person was talking above and behind them and, being under the influence of the drug, had no idea what was happening.
Magnetic stimulation of the brain, as with the helmet developed by Michael Persinger.[citation needed]
Electrical stimulation of the brain, particularly the temporoparietal junction (See below).
Sensory deprivation or sensory overload. Various techniques aim to cause intense disorientation of the subject by making him lose his space and time references.[citation needed] The first technique, attempting to fall asleep without losing consciousness, can be considered to be a passive form of sensory deprivation. The brain tends to fill in the gaps when there is nothing getting into the senses for some time. Sensory overload consists of the opposite, where the subject can for instance be rocked for a long time in a specially designed cradle, or submit to light forms of torture, to cause the brain to shut itself off from all sensory input. Both conditions tend to cause confusion and this disorientation often permits the subject to experience vivid, ethereal out-of-body experiences. This tends to happen when the subject believes he or she is in a particular position, whereas his or her actual body is either rocking in a cradle actively, or still lying down. Consciousness suddenly transfers to the mental body.
Some people who practice BDSM desire to be placed in extreme bondage (mummification) because it may allow them to have an out-of-body experience. These experiences have been reported by some people placed in extreme bondage. It is worth noting that being placed in extreme bondage is like being placed in a sensory deprivation tank, and that the OBE may be induced by the resulting sensory deprivation.[citation needed]
Galantamine is a Nootropic that can increase the odds of success when using along with Out-of-body experience or Lucid dream induction technique.[5][6][7]
In some cases, extreme physical effort can induce an OBE. For example, one running in a marathon could overwork themselves and feel "extraordinarily weightless" and actually see themselves from above. Many times this is related to dehydration.[citation needed]

[edit] Near-death experiences
Main article: Near-death experience
Another form of a spontaneous OBE occurs during a near death experience (INDEE or NDE). The phenomenology of an NDE usually includes physiological, psychological and transcendental factors (Parnia, Waller, Yeates & Fenwick, 2001) such as impressions of being outside the physical body (an out-of-body experience), visions of deceased relatives and religious figures, transcendence of ego and spatiotemporal boundaries and other transcendental experiences (Lukoff, Lu & Turner, 1998; Greyson, 2003). Typically the experience follows a distinct progression, starting with the sensation of floating above one's body and seeing the surrounding area, followed by the sensation of passing through a tunnel, meeting deceased relatives, and concluding with encountering a being of light (Morse, Conner & Tyler, 1985).

Took from Wikipedia...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astral_projection

Astral projection (or astral travel) is a paranormal interpretation of an out-of-body experience achieved either awake or via lucid dreaming or deep meditation. The concept of astral projection assumes the existence of another body, separate from the physical body and capable of traveling to non-physical planes of existence. Commonly such planes are called astral, etheric, or spiritual. Astral projection is often experienced as the spirit or astral body leaving the physical body to travel in the spirit world or astral plane.[1] Astral projection is controversial. Skeptics say that there is only anecdotal evidence that anything actually leaves the body.[2]

I also believe there is that difference...

we should remember that OBE can be of any nature but not controlled...where as AP is one willing and meditating on leave the body...
