As A writer in need of resources for a character plot.
What have you read or what do you idealize the effects of drugs on vampires?
example Cassidy in Preacher is a lush.Has anyone heard of junkie vampires.
well, in this link that BLOODLIFE has provided in a previous thread, you can find some things related to that... it is absolutely possible that they really enjoy to drink blood from junkies... x)
here's the link:
The Opium Vampires
"This early case had a number of unusual aspects, not the least of which was the discovery that vampires, like humans, can develop a taste for drugs..."
This is about the narcotic effect of the poppy
http://dailyapple.blogspot.com/2007/10/apple-274-vampires.html
Ive heard quite a few stories, about vampires choosing only junked out victims, but I don't know if it was because they were easier, or because of the opiates.
In the Masquarde exstacy laced blood overwhelme
vampire senses. As I suspected the through blood exposer is reacurring thanks for the link i will look for the thread.
I guess it would depend on the type of vampire. From what I have seen and read the "rave scene" is pretty popular amongst vampire groups (or groupies), of course the main character is usually drug free.
For the purposes of writing I might suggest that vampires either enjoy drugs or receive a very strong high from just blood. You run the risk of offending those with "lighter" constitutions or feelings when talking about drugs in a fictional manor. Although drugs could make for a more enjoyable trek from an artistic point of view.
some have pretend that some drugs enhance the senses for a period of time, other drugs supressing the brain reception's of pain signal
I have heard of vampires choosing victims that were using drugs, but not of the vampire actually doing the drugs. I mean they could choose these victims becasue they are easier to catch, or because they can actually feel the affects of the drugs through the blood they ingest.
So would the drugs effect on the donors blood activity
be a contributing factor ,as opposed to direct ingestion of a substance?Without getting to into a character trait or biology of a character vampire (such as does a vampire have an active nerve center)to bridge drug use of donors into a story.
Thanks Melakh that was a very helpful link.
For the oppisite side coverage direct ingestion is not likely to effect a vampire at all or is it and what would support the reason?
Couldn't it be possible that a Vampire could take a drug for some sort of medicinal purpose? I would say the effects would be similar to that of any other ordinary Joe.
Then a reader of the story would be lead to ask what physical funtions exist after vampirism infects a person.
Because drugs do indeed change how a persons blood pressure is utilized to extract hormones and other blood material in there body if some vampires have a varied taste for the content of blood or the state of the blood then they may become addicted to the users of that drug. How ever if a vampires nerves are effected by vampirism then the accual drug would not be effective.unless vampirism leaves the nerve centwer intact psi vampes maybe come addicted to people in a drug induced state.
lets pretend there is such thing as immortality. immortality must be pretty boring, what else to do but waste some time and forget some problems in the meanwhile. junkie vampires makes perfect sense to me.
Tons and tons of stoners love the whole vampire scene. There are several scenes in various films where junkies are depicted as easy victims as well.
I know a little about such things, I used to DJ and run a night club in England for a bit..
MDMA brings on a feeling of euphoria so strong you see people as angles and feel gods presence …. It is not un common for vampire clans in the area to use this on there victims/ donors and help with the fantasy of being dark god like beings … ah the good old days of the early raves in late 80’s early 90’s acid house free party’s and underground events most reading this couldn’t even dream of on a huge scales.
Dabbler, you're the author, you can make the effects, if any, any way you wish! Would be interesting if certain drugs did have a certain effect on a vampire.
Also, in Jim Butcher's "The Dresden Files" there is an addictive party drug called "third eye." You might want to read them for some inspiration.
Getting the feel and exceptance that a vimpire would get the effect from the user seems a constant theme and that is easier to work with in writing.Along with other points made through out the story.it keeps the story intresting because the main character has to cultivate the users. He can't just take the drug by its self and get the same effect.
although a victim that takes kumadine would be a real bad experience.
Kitsuna You said it swell that is why I added the through the blood angle if the drugs go through a persons system and traces are in the blood occur that that could change the contents of the blood,Thank you for the reference ,does it state if he ingested the drugs or if he feed off a user.Would the blood from a junkie be potent but thin or would the texture be more syrup ?
i think thee drug should be used for the vampire easy victims but the blood might be at risk....
No, I don't believe it mentioned anything like that. Forgive me if I am wrong, I haven't read the books in I don't know how long. I only remember Lestat drinking wine, which, depending on your own views and morals, could be a narcotic. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if blood could be considered one.
I will have to research the effects of various drugs on the blood content and changes to fill a chapter.I think a vampire on LSD laced psi vibes would be a real tripper right along with the donor perhaps even charmed to the donor.....
Not so sure what effect a drug would have on a vampire really.
An interesting angle for a vampire story.
A new drug that hits the streets that happens to give humans a mental ride, but if a vamp feeds off of someone taking this new drug, it has double or triple the effect.
Could be caused by some chemical property or by some mystical herbal quality of the drug's source.
as a mythical vampire becoming a dealer would be quite wise -- he has a customer base who range from shady drifter to mafia which means if he gets ripped off then he can justify his next meal. if you know what i mean.
....Oh Molly you just caused me to blow a mental gasket...
The new Drug????interesting...an average drug for humans spices up the blood for a vampire...
I have looked into what effects drugs have on the characteristics of blood but everything is long winded
and technical at the source I went to does anybody have a link to a good summary?
well giving the victim some poppers would instantly draw blood up to the head and give the victim a state of temporary euphoria and/or horniness.
So thin blood to a vampire could be like Everclear
to a vampire ...poppers? thats amilnitrate an inhalant correct?
I agree Tring to poison a vampire with poison wouldn't kill it but I do subscibe to tainted blood effecting vampires or skillfully craft potions that could include trace amonts of bane substance like colloidal silver and garlic(a blood thinning agent)
You might want to check out a movie called crash if you haven't already seen it. They aren't really vampires, however their mannerisms make me wonder what the director wanted you to think sometimes. They likes pain and adrenaline, which could be retrofitted into speed or any type of upper.
yes I have seen that movie and adrenaline is very addictive ask extreme atletes who have been a week without pushing the edge and they will tell you what withdraw is like.Vampires i read consistantly either excite their pray or relax their donors before feeding kind of like the beer at room tempurature or chilled
flat soda or fizzing soda ....I know bad analogy
In one of my authors that I read Kerrelyn Sparks she incorporates a drug "night shade" (I think) that paralyzes the vampire. It's like a cryptonite (*sp) to them which they can hear and see but can't move anything for hours.
I wouldn't really think they would have an effect if your talking about the "hollywood" vampires they wouldn't because of how they are portrayed.
Looking through my other books trying to find the correct author for you I think it's Susan Squires back in old England they used a drug for pain and sleep "laudanum" in the first book of the series they decided to get the vampire addicted however they had to use quite alot of it versus the norm of a human.
I think it was laudanum that was used bby Louis and Claudia to immobilize lestat. they put it in his wine. I remember being surprised that it had an effect.
In Already Dead by Huston, the vampire is drugged to immobilize him.
Spike, adorable Spike, got soused on a regular basis.
If you set it up properly, your vamp can do a smorgasbord of drugs.
Nightshade is a deadly plant, I think.
Having Lestat drink DEAD blood, instead of someone alive... the children had been given the drug to keep their bodies warm and semblance of being alive to fool Lestat.
Speaking of that, vampires drinking tainted blood with AIDS, HIV, leukemia, hepatitis, etc......
again, all depends on the creator of that particular vampire world decides to do.
I don't remember it that way, Lumiya, but you're probably right. Lestat did say there was something wrong with the blood. The timing would have had to be to the second. If the children were dead then their blood wouldn't have flowed.
Also, I do remember clearly huge Lestat explanations on when to stop drinking, right before the heart stopped because of a fear of dire consequences to the vampire.
Louis and Claudia were such innocents searching for info, not sure they'd figured that out.
Just reread that section of Interview. The orphan boys weren't dead (one moans and raises an eyebrow). They'd been given a combo of absinthe and laudanum.
oh please, a vampire has a brain and a vampires cells have receptors, dont try to tell me a vampire couldnt experience highs.
and yes poppers are glorified leather cleaner, when the vapors are inhaled causes a burst of energy as well as a pleasent headrush, so i hear. *Wink*
I am smoking ecstacy sometimes, yes it is legal in here japan and it makes me feel good relaxed yes.
If we're talking about fictional beings - that in most authors' worlds - their lungs do not breathe and their hearts do not pump - so how could drugs do anything to a vampire??
LumiyaOfTheSith - yes we are talking about fiction ... you are right on the breathing part however when they are awake the heart does work to pump the blood through their system except when they go into their death sleep than everything shuts down.
However their lungs do work but not for the need of air they just breath sometimes out of habit from being human. Thats what I get out of some of my books.
Night Shade! How did I forget night shade? Now I remember I thought tree frog poison which is nightshade related My room mate figured a dose of night shade would effect the blood absorbed by the vampire already if a drug was to effect a vampire directly night shade would be the one.
Spike does tend to get drunk a lot.
it's just hitting you now that I mentioned it? ... are you sure your roomate didn't spike your coffee with it? LOL
Correct Polish, except in some of the shows/books, their heart would beat after feeding which helped to redden the skin and looked more alive, instead of white pale. So, basically whatever author or show is how it's done :P
going back to the other question of the drugs... with the authors they choose drugs that specifically affect the nervous system that immobilizes the vamp and has to be injested in very large amounts and doesn't last. So theoretically they don't become drug adicts per se except for that one book that I mentioned above with the drug from old england. Their brains still function so it would have to be a drug that affects the brain and central nervous system and most narcotics do.
Just to add my two cents worth.
First and foremost it is your story, so you get to decide whatever the heck you want. If you want drugs to make vampires grow mushrooms out of thier heads, more power to you. (Not that I'd actually suggest that). That having been said, these are the most common viewpoints I've run across.
As Normal: This idea states that vampires experience the effects of drugs just like any other person. It doesn't matter how dead the vamp is or how long they've been on this earth. They take a bottle of pills, they're going to be seriously screwed up. The only difference is that if the vampires are immortal in this mythos, then they become immune from overdose
In the Blood: This is pretty self explanitory. They can feel the effects of a drug by drinking from someone under the influence. The level of influence varies from story to story, but how intoxicated they become usually depends on how much blood they drink and how far gone their donor or victim is.
Mind over Matter: This one usually only applies to those vampire myths which state that a vampire's body is dead and only their mind is alive. In this case a vampire's existence is soley dependent on how they think their existence should be. Therefore, if a vampire thinks they'll get high by smoking a joint, then they will, conversely, if they think it won't effect them, then it won't.
Cold Turkey: This one is also pretty self-explanitory. It states simply that because an immortal vampire can shrug off any wound, illness, disease, or poison, they cannot be effected by drugs. Period.
Once again it's your story so do what you want, but those are the most common ones I've come across in my reading. Message me if you want more.
I have seen where vampires have no effect from drugs or alchol in fiction but I am sure that real vampires would be able to become addicted like anyone else.
As far as "real" vampires are concerned, I think it really depends on the type of vampire. I don't pretend to be an expert, but what would prevent a psy vampire from being able to consume and become addicted to drugs? I'm not trying to be ignorant, just trying to gain knowledge. Send me a private message if you'd like.
so lets say the blood doesn't pump and what have you, does this mean that the vampire can never experience the joys serotonins provide?
how does the energy from foreign blood get through his system -- if I may be frank -- if his system has flooded to his feet if you get my gyst. when blood doesnt flow it pools, am i right? am i right.
Well, I'm not sure about other stories or resources, but I know that in Vampire: The Masquerade, blood doesn't pump through your body, but rather spreads in a quasi-mystical diffusion.
It probably depends on the vampire, though enough of anything would eventually affect them (most likely).
Really, there isn't much I can add to this that has not already been mentioned.
If a fictional vampire swallowed a drug, it may not be able to digest and absorb it. The fictional vampire may have to receive the drug only through feeding on drugged victims.
What if a fictional vampire had a disease or infection and needed antibiotics, that fictional vampire have to feed on victims that were taking antibiotics.
That might be an interesting plot device. Fictional vampires that are infected by some disease, possibly an epidemic amongst vampires, where the remedy is readily available, but the vampire can't ingest the medication.
The vampires must hunt victims taking the drug or farm them.
Well, I know that it VtM, for a crazy vampire to get medication they have to feed off someone taking that drug for it to effect them. Again, it depends on genre or mythos
Extacy laced blood in VTES when placed on a vampire they must hunt they can do nothing else.
well i hope no ones said this b4...but in merrick (by anne rice) before david and louis attempt to conjure claudias spirit with the help of merrick mayfair louis walks into a bar and feeds on a drunk man. later on he thinks he should have chosen someone who was drinking something a little bit stronger than beer. if alcohol in a victims blood can affect a vampire then why not drugs?
cocaine addicts didnt seem to affect pandora tho, and she is signifigantly stronger than louis
*smacks head*
Now why didn't I remember that?
He's right, if a foreign substance such as alcohol, can effect the vampire, or even make him/her feel different, than I don't see why a narcotic couldn't do the same.
Indeed.
Also, I would think that vampires could also create their own narcotic substances. In VtM, the Seddites have a special potion they create called "Typhon's Brew" which is essentially blood beer for vampires. Why couldn't a vampire then make some sort of vampy narcotic?
Also keep in mind that if vampires can absorb drugs into their system through the blood of their victims, it would also be possible for a vampire to drug another for their own sadisitc purposes. Like getting making an enemy a crackhead, poisoning them, or essentially slipping another vampire a date rape drug. (I do not condone this in actual practice, just throwing out ideas for fiction).
True, but further, if someone were to be poisoned and then used by a vampire, how many of you would think that the vampire, (not Immortal) would die along with it's prey?
In that case, the drug may be effective if injected directly into the vampires blood vessels.
Do you mean it wouldn't kill the vampire unless it was directly injected?
I dont remember reading anything pertaining to vampires as junkies or perfering junkies over other non-junkies. I believe it would detract from the clasic vampire image..
No Kitsuna, I was thinking more in terms of contrasting feeding on humans that took certain drugs compared to vampires injecting the same drugs.
Not necessarily poisons, but perhaps antibiotics, narcotics, etc....
I suppose that would depend on whether or not you thought a vampire is an altered living being or a re-animated dead body. Both would have very different reactions to certain drugs and the like
If you are talking about the mythical vamp. then I would think that no narcotic could affect them since they are dead. They would be immune to such substances that affect living cells and blood.
Even if they are dead, their bodies must have some type of metabolism, because they still feed.
In my opinion the Vampire would enjoy perhaps the different taste of the blood from one who takes narcotics....perhaps it would even give the Vampire a different "rush" of excitement as he or she drank from the human.
So a fictional vampire wouldn't need to feed on blood, but just enjoys it.
lavisbre - Aaaahhh the memories! Which club did you run?
I'm afraid I have experience of a variety of narcotics & if anyone would like any further information for research purposes then i'll gladly answer questions but not on this thread.
In answer to the original question then I would imagine a vampire would benefit greatly from drinking from a person on drugs & they would have the added benefit of not being able to OD!
That author I mentioned previously "sparks" the one that has a vamp which is a scientist, well he owns a chemical company which makes a whole line of synthetic blood for vamps in her series and a designer line such as chochalood, champaigne/blood, blisky, etc
it's funny to see the male vamps complain that their harem is getting fat because of the chocholate flavored blood and the drunk scottish one when he finally get the blisky made
Syntetic blood intresting I will be skimming those books here at the library.
The vampires in Whitley Strieber's works were immune to the fatal effects of cigarettes and/or drugs, and some of them took part in petty vices without the least concern of ill-effects.
Well, in Anne Rice's 'Blood Canticle', when Mona fed off a drug dealer who had cocaine in his system she seemed to have gotten a little trip from the blood.
I would guess that synthetic blood would do the job better than real blood. Sort of like synthetic oil for your car. Longer between feedings i guess.
I know for myself with my prescription medication it sometimes effects my ablity to function or concentrate and focus on things but it would depend on the drug and the amount taken I would assume, as to whether or not it effects a person and just how much it effects them.
On mythical vampires it would have no effect. The only way to restore a mythical vampire would be through feeding. On a modern vampire drugs would probably effect them just like any other person.
I would assume that narcotics would affect a vampire the same as a human. That is my personal opinion
Heres a good one for you. I was saving this for a story myself but I guess you can have it..
You could have an addict who was turned into a vampire. But now they find that they cant get high as they did once before, Smoking, Shooting up what ever it just does not work. Staving and in pain from withdrawal when he attacks a person in an ally Whom as an addict too and they figure out that they can get high and get their fix by drinking the blood of those who are high.
Just a thought.. Please give me credit if you use it. Thanks
The Tainted Blood kick is a flex fit for writing I want to appeal to those that have a structural Bio engineer notion of vampires. To just say that vampires can take drugs could cheapen the immortality edge.
The Element of hunting strictly Users is some how ethical....llal
I think it would probably give them a slight high as it were. Or maybe a buzz, like someone who has been drinking a bit.
I see no reason why narcotice would not effect Vampires as it does anyone else. It is a chemical reaction that causes mental warpping of preception. In fact. With the Vampire's mythical healing ability, I think that the addictive nature of the drugs would be multiplied because it would lead to crashing effect faster for a Vampire than it would for a normal human. Making them an even greater danger as a junkie.
so would you support the blood fix or straight use camp?
If they were dead I would say none ---
If you're talking about real people --- it wouldn't be any different then you or me getting high ..
dabbler
I would support both. Because I find it would be relative to the Vampire.
The narcotice may enhance the already intoxicating feelings that the Vampires get from feeding anyways. This would cause the Vampire to singularly feed from Junkies. Plus it is more economical for the Vampire, instead of having to shill out the money to out right buy the drugs. But this may dilute the full effects of the drugs on the Vampires system, making the high weeker or stronger depending on when the victim last shot up.
But if the Vampire were to take the narcotic out right. Their already heightend senses would be over shot thus adding to the effects of the drugs making them even more addictive. And possibly leading to uncontroled hunting and bloodshed.
Both ways the Vampire would still crash atleast twice as fast as a normal human, so the Vampire would become a greater threat and more dangerous because of its despiration to get its next fix.
Well, I say get creative as far as thinking "otuside" the box for a vamp. In essence, they do retain a semblance of basic "human" desire - whether it be thrill-seekers, cutting, drug abuse Something more "intense" may the best way to set the pace for the actual abuse. Consider the ways they would go about procuring these drugs -- let's say they were into Spitting King Cobra blood or be able to trip out on blood used in a blood rites ritual. Hell, have them enjoy a shot of gasoline and a flaming match. Point is, you'd have to take a standard addictions and have them chase addictions far and beyond something a normal person could even consider. Umm.. like base-jumping without the net -- hell, sjy-diving without the net. Deep sea diving (spelunking) in the oceans with no equipment (air isnt really a factor, right?) Chemicals are only going to yield . Put yourself in t that position and then up it a few hundred. It's going to than Red Bull and vodka.
It may even be a funny story about a looking for a valid vampire "high" and all the experimenting that goes into it. Take your kink addicts, to chemical experimenters and thrill seekers...Have fun with it!
