What is the big difference really I argue that one is dead while the other lives but that must not be so as said in another post.

So what is the true difference???

Well, I'm gonna go with the main-stream versions of both.

The vampire is considered undead. It needs blood to survive, usually can't survive in the sunlight, usually has enhanced sense as well as supernatural abilities, and in sometimes portrayed as being able to 'transform' insofar as Dracula.

Zombies are undead, but have no higher brain function. They eat flesh, yet have no enhanced senses or supernatural abilities. They're usually slow and weak and easily killed.

Or something.

Yeah, kinda. It is believed that black witches and wizards are able to make a dead body a zombie and use it as a slave for their purposes. It's only an option though.

zombies in my opinion are like lobotomized vampires. where as vampires are highly sophistacted and refined, loving the pleasure in life.

Vampires are made up not real...movie zombies eat brains or flesh....actual zombies are real people that are under a hoo doo spell placed on them with a powder...mostly used in Haiti.

Well, Zombies are dead people that was brought back to live by unseen forces. they eat brains and flesh and what ever living thing they can grab their hands onto. They walk slow and have no supernatural powers. They will just keep caming after you no matter what. best way to kill one it cut off the head or by destorying the brain.

Vampires are nocturnal creatures that feed on the blood of the living. Same they are undead that preys on the innocent and weak. he/she may have many different abilitys depending on what that might be weather its flying, seeing into the hearts and minds of those they wish to feed on, shapeshift into say, a bat, wolf, mist. Likje that of Dracula can. or have enlightened sences and dislikes the sun or very bright lights for that matter. Very many are romantic and in sexual nature and have that charm within them all. They are the true masters of disguise and can hide themselfs to blend in with the crowd.

They both might sound or seem the same but there is a differance. Zombies are slimey dead corpses and Vampires are mostly nice on the eyes and has its own flair of beauty and class.

I am thinking zombies have no brain or ability to think.Where vampires are undead as well, but have full capiblities to think and reason,etc.

its all about how long they were dead. Vampires turn quickly and zombies sometimes are dead for along time and there brain function almost stops.

yeah, i've always thought of the difference as being intelligence. i don't know too much though, only whats in Ravenloft.

You guys are forgetting that most of the oldest stories regarding vampires had them much like zombies - the revanants ( Not sure of spelling). They were bungling idiot vampires...Only when vampires became romanticized did they gain intellect and refinement.

Zombies are the reanimated dead with little to no memory, basic motor functions, basically no thought patterns. Zombies like to eat brains and fleash of their victems.
Vampires are the reanimated dead, they remember their previous lives, they think act and in some cases "feel" as if they were alive they just have no "soul". Vampires feed on living blood.

In Night Of The Living Dead (I think) we find out that when zombies consume brains, it stops the pain of being dead.

But anyway, all of the above especially the mention of a poison used in Haiti.

Vampirism is generally considered to be passed on from a master vampire to its children.

Zombies are usually made by a necromancer. Popular movies have both as infections, as is lycanthropy, and a host of other things... but I think that that is mearly playing on modern fears of aids.

Biting transmition is surely linked to rabies... but is not as common in the West Indies tradition where zombies are mindless minions of the necromancer.

Zombies of course are near mindless and generally clomsy, they fall apart and, seam to have an appatte for flesh (brains) as opposed o vampires that are generally graceful, require blood to not age, and are considered more intelligent if still subservient to their maker.

Master vampires are considered a race unbto themselves and "children" can be freeed from their curse by killing the master.

Zomies are generally no considered to proreate altjhough in modern movies this does seam to be the csse.

I have always had a like of Vampires and know much more of that lore than the Zombie lore....however, I do know from what little I read on Zombies that they are the walking dead with out the ability to think for themselves. From what I read on vampires they are able to "live" usually unloticed amongst the masses as they can "blend" in....at least at night.

Vampires suck blood and zombies eat brains.

Both vampires and zombies are undead creatures with one major difference. That difference being that vampires have many strengths and zombies don't .

By definition a zombie is a corpse raised and controlled by a living being, thus it can not act on its own, if the controlling person is not there to guide it the zombie can only function as a robot, do the task it was assigned to do, in a fight or when confronted with an obstacle its only reaction is to try to complete the task. A vampire can think, move faster, it really is not a contest.

Zombies tend to be non-sentient beings, meaning, no brain to speak of, while vampires are as clever as a human.

zombies = rise from grave and dead....
vamps = drink blood, alive and not rising from any gave in the ground....

Zombies don't have sex; never even occurs to them.

Zombies are driven by hunger, the urge to eat flesh & taste blood. They have no other thoughts, no skills, have trouble walking or fighting off an attack.

Vampires have a hunger for blood, but also have brains, and skills. They are not driven by hunger to the point of being senseless.

Zombies are reanimated corpses without a functioning brain. Vampires, while reanimated in a sense, have functioning brains. The way I see it, the vampires have a will to feed off blood and their brain is in control, they can think, much like humans can- where zombies are just slaves to whoever woke them. Or just the hunger for BRAAAIINS. =D

Technically, if they know they need to feed, know what their prey is, and know how to move, it all gives cause for a brain function.

well most zombie originated from the Haitians (sp) many years ago by using certain drugs to animate the dead to do their bidding , as it were. VooDoo has a strong control over Zombies which are the dead that has been risen, I do no consider them the liveing dead. just someones puppet for the most part. They have no free will or any intellegence to speak of.

Vampires depends on if your talking Hollywood or people whom live the Vampiric livestyle..
Vampires of historical stories and Hollywood... well,
They have a brain, frre will, and somewhat intellegence to them. They need the bllod to survive, reason being that theirs was drained from them and now need to keep blood in them to survive.

People who actually live the Vampiric Lifestyle and are REAL people they are not dead just choose to drink blood and are usually very intellegent people. They have become accustomed to the night life and veer away from the sunlight days ..

So to me there is a big difference between the two...

Probably nothing. Both being undead and technically not having blood flowing [vampire] or having their blood coagulated [zombie] wouldn't effect much.

similarities both are undead both in someway attack humanoids so far both seems to need to feed from blood or some nutrient from the human body to stay moving when both bite you they transform you into something else.both can theoretically live forever.

differences intelligence factor, vampire has actually super natural abilities zombies just have no pain receptors so and cant fatigue vampires die in the sun zombies keep coming.wood stake through the heart kills a vampire or incapacitates them a zombie will eat your face for trying to stake them in the heart.

a zombie is an animated corpse that is decaying, it has no real intelligence or will. a vampire is also an animated corpse but it is not decaying, not dumb, it is, let's say, a highly evolved human with above-human capabilities and limitations.

lol, very true. However, a vampire has the ability to think, for higher reason, whereas a zombie does not. It is (the zombie) considered subhuman, whereas the vampire, having all the perks of vampyric lifestyle, is above human in physical ability (not taking into account the whole spectrum of it's weaknesses).

I guess it depends on what the zombies and vampires come from.

e.g. Resident Evil Extinction . They were able to give a zombie back its ability to think, more or less.

great movie. And if I'm not mistaken the zombies were given the ability to reason somewhat due to the scientific experiments performed by, of course, a crazy but brilliant scientist who repressed their unshakeable hunger and honed their anger and physical abilities.

However, the zombies had no part in it, they were unwilling participants in scientific experiments and therefore, since the outcome did not come from their own doing or will, I don't think it really counts.

the zombies in the movie can't read. the most they could do was do that little kiddy toy thing where you put the square thingy in the square hole.

that's true, but illiteracy doesn't impact intelligence as a whole, on a general basis. Being unable to control basic primal urges such as hunger, anger, and agression fall under the category of lack of intelligence. And since the zombies in the movie didnt have those abilities they fall under that category too.

Btw, the brain is the bigges muscle a child has, which is why most of it's body mass is in its head. And when the muscles start to develop they child becomes intelligent....... sometimes.

Since zombies can come under someone's control (such as a necromancer) can a vampire be brough under someone's control? I have never heard a story about this, I mean I have heard a few stories of them being killed or captured, but have you ever heard of one being used to do someone else's bidding?

Well, in a Coven of vampires, all vampires in it are subordinate to the leader. So that is kind of the same thing.

However ..

I'll use the vampires of Anne Rice as an example.

As they gain age they gain new powers of sorts.

The Cloud Gift, the Fire Gift, et cetera ..

It's possible if one were to gain an age of more than say .. 10,000 years, they could develope a power of mind control.

I read a book (I can't remember the title), where regardless of the vampire's age, he or she could use mind control to attract it's prey or to keep it from running. But I think this is a little to off topic lol.

Of course there could always be a vampire in the Twilight series with that ability.. ;]
