It seems to me that Hollywood is just
putting a stake through the heart of the
true vampire.
I mean these days, young people that
are getting into vampires are getting a
image of a Vampire that to me, isn't a true
Vampire.
I mean the vampire is now this karate
kicking rambo. Like what is up with that??
I think the best way for vampires to be
portrayed by Hollywood should be in the
form of great movies such as " Lost boys,
Interview with the Vampire or the classic
Nosferatu. " (If its not broke - don't fix it)
A Vampire is a wonderful creature.
Cunning, charming, seductive and so on.
Not a undead rambo that shoots other
Vampires with his automatic stake -
shooting crossbow.
Hollywood misrepresented the vampires a very long time ago. They are only objective is to make money.
Note that the film industry has also slowed quite a bit in making Vampire films for mass viewing in theaters since Gary Oldmans portrayal of the man.
No one attempts a serious play at Vampires since that film came out.
He did such an amazing, convincing job that in the opening scenes of the movie he actually frightened several members of the crew.
I agree with you Empress, but wondering if they keep putting that stuff out, if we are not going to have another witch burning in america. Can you see the next generation trying to shoot automated stake shooters at us?lol sorry made myself laugh. They have so many movies about vampires out, that it seems if someone were trying to "turn" themselves into one, than they would be very confused. Keep em guessing, thats what I say.
Hollywood ruins everything, by trying to recreate things that should be left as it was in the past. Anything Hollywood has redone is rubbish! In my opinion of course...
Well all views of vampires have changed over the years, even books. In Dracula the Count has a huge mustache, dresses in black from head to toe and has hair growing in the middle of his hands. He is also only slightly faster then the men when he fights with them and he scars when wounded. Also the stake they use in the book is 3 feet long.
Compare that view to any book written about vampires today and there is a huge difference. Characters change as their audience changes and as one character evolves another higher evolved character is created to replace the one that came before in the popular eye.
its all to do with keepin the viewers happy, getting the ratings and all that.
they find whatever comes along and exploit it till nothing more can be done with it.
You are right about one thing. Vampires should be portraid like the original folklores. The movie you are refering to was based on a comic book. Blade originally came from the comic book Spiderman. A character named Morbeous came about. This is when Blade made his first appearance. Don't judge on one. Blade's reason for his acts is that he was made without choice and searches for his mother. The movie shows that he murdered his mother but the real story in the comic book is that she stills lives and tries to murder him for what he is doing to the Vampires !!
well in a way Hollywood has killed the vampires.. but then think again.. were would you be without Dracula, Interview.. and Nosferatu? This site probably wouldn't even exist and the way you look on life, things almost everything would be different.. cause the books wouldn't be famous (let's face it.. how many of you first read a vampire novel and then saw any vamp. movie? You probably first saw a movie (doesn't mater which one) and told yourself "wow what a interesting creature" and the started digging for the books and the rest) thus you wouldn't even wonder about them.. and without any wonder you wouldn't read about them and so you wouldn’t know about them..
As long as there are people who look into the hearts of vampires and the history of them, who don't rely on movies for facts, The Vampires haven't been ruined by Hollywood. As as far as I can see from this website, it's still doing fine.
This is what I love about " some" of you
people. Some of you are so well thought
out with your thoughts on threads.
Cheers to you all.
lol well the whole ass kicking vamp thing came from our buddy stan lee with the blade commics etc... ALL HAIL MARVEL. for they help a bit in making this new image.
People want action, and cool effects, blood, death and violence. Hollywood gives them what they want. No one seems to care about the actual facts anymore...
So Hollywood has turned the things into fiction fantasies, and throw as little truth and fact in as they possibly can, so it appeals to the people.
-i hope that made sense this medication makes me a little absent minded. So sorry if it doesn't.
Ok look at it like this....
Sure they make movies for what the
people of this generation want..fine.
But if Cancer was making a movie
and i mean someone like him that has
the knowledge or passion of vampirism.
Do you people think it would be about
Kung-Fu Vamps???
Hollywood has always been after one thing and one thing only your money. They take works of fiction and history and blow them up to where people will watch them then sit back and rake in the money.
Wel all have our beliefs in how things are or where and are to be, but that will never stop Hollywood.
Before everyone starts attacking Hollywood, let me just point out that many people on Vampire Rave will have been first seduced by the vampyric 'idealism' when considering image through Hollywood movies, and its only when people start to lok deeper that they realise that its something different.
If it wasnt for the films and fantasy books, then vampires wouldn't be half as renowned among the Western world as they are. However, what they are known as in very much misinterpreted whencompared to those of Slovac myths for example.
I feel that films such as 'The Lost Boys' tend to show vampires as just like anyone else, but with this false sense of charisma, played by someone attractive who seduces all the women. This irratates me.
Empress, you can't really be saying that this film portrays the 'reality' of vampires, when a group of children manage to kill one while he is sleeping upside down like a bat!
Who really knows how a vampire, or a HLV, or someone who may be a member of a house or study Strigoi Vii, or perhaps follow the Black Veil, or one who simply optimises pranic energy and broadens their perception of what the world can give us, while remaining in harmony within it.... so many different things can be considered as 'vampire' that we can never really get it right. But from what you have described, if anything, I think its the vampires of fiction that you are saying you want to be represented in 'reality' and I think that really does bring your argument to full circle...
As for Lost Boys.
I thought it was a wonderful way to show
the vampire in today and not in the 1950's
But what you said is very thoughtful for
pondering.
I won't put down a good thought.
1950's? What, so you mean Dracula? Have you moved topic, as I never mentioned that.
I suppose I should summarise for most people who wont read my post, as its long... vampire is your interpretation, and when everyone else has a different one, how can it be portrayed correctly by an industry?
Hollywood has made Vampires Gun carrying Lycan killers and that is not what we are about I personally do not actually like violence I would prefere there was no violence but Hollywood is intent on making us look like Merciless Killers
I'm talking about the true Vampire.
Not about what Hollywood shows us
today.
If your into Ninja vampires then cool.
Rent the movie and enjoy.
yeah kinda but they only did it to make money and all that stuff that barely matters anyway i could probably be very happy living the rest of my life off one movie's income (sorry starting to ramble)
As said by many, Hollywood goes by what is consoidered ,"in", what will get people to come see the movie. What the generation is asking for. To me it does ruin the idea of a real vampire, but on the other hand it also opens up opportunitys to those who are new to the idea of vampirism. If they really want to know anything they will dig deep and find themselves.
Think about the first vampire movie you saw, now think about how your life is now? Are you the spitting image of what you saw on screen or did you find your own?
With Hollywood, it may ruin what we portray, but it will bring others, and they will look and find what they want.. And hopefully they will find the roots of our civilization.
yes just leave the vampire alone do not change a good thing
Empress, I am on your team 100%. The last couple of vampire movies I've seen have been all guns, kung-fu and computer-enhanced battles. Booooooring. I want the passion, the up close, sweaty danger of vampires.
Oh, I also wanted to say Khayman also makes an excellent point. Gary Oldman owns that role.
people are stupid.. it's not rocket science to understand that... maybe that's way vamps eat them for the beggining... they are useless..
I agree with you, to a certain extent. Yes I believe that Hollywood is getting carried away, and losing touch with the reality of real vampires. But at the same time I am glad to see that they are being portrayed more often as heroes, then villains.
After all, I'm tired of seeing a vampire movie, where all the vampires are killed by the end of the movie, by some lame group of teenagers and some sharp sticks.
its just like hollywood to take an already established icon and turn it into an unrecognizable cash cow. like Empress said: if its not broke, don't fix it.
i always thought of the Vampire as a romantic type, the Vampire didnt need guns or Kung-fu, he/she had mental powers an could control there victoms, the kung-fu vamps were sexy but, i prefer the strong silent type Vampire...like me
yes you're right empress. And am also sick of these kids who dress gothic and say they are vamps and say: oh look at my fake fangs, and my long nails etc....
I am also fed up of people thinking that vampires are some satanic creatures.
Anyway movies are to impress people so it to make more for profit.
Hollywood has always killed everything!
Harry Potter for instance, compare it with the book and whoa, big big BIG difference.
have you seen Twins Effect? (Jackie Chan) yes, it's a stupid movie (dunno for you) vampires applying sun block, LITERALLY!
If you understand what I said in my post Empress, then you would see that that is exaclty what I am saying.
I have to agree with hollywood has corupted vampires. They forget that vampires are beautiful and daring, usally beyond human understanding. Not these things that kill other members of their species. that is just bull shit. if they truly hate themselves, they kill themselves.
~Curtsies with a smirk~
My most sincerest apologies Miss Echo.
You asked for a discussion. If that is how you treat those who try to give you one, then thats a shame.
I think many people have many different views on vampires....
my vampire is in my image as echo says... can he have a sombrero (sp) and walk around with a spear and a kimono on? i reckon empress speaks of the "old school" vamp as the elegant rich and chraming vampire who will do his "dirty work hunts at night" and show his politeness during company... BUT then again i think you mean "those who THINK they are real vamps" of today and can envision them selves as any vamp they want... this is intresting indeed....
its more of a lifestlye woiuldn't u say? thats what Hollywood does..it kills images..we can only hope that they don't get the wrong idea
I don't really know how to respond... I am a fan of vampire movies ( even though the characters are not realistic ) but I understand where you all are coming from... I hate the way that movies portray only one thing as being right... they need to get back to the good old days of showing things for what they are... OR they should figure out new movie plots... Movies are just repeating eachother now adays... Lets look at darkness falls and boogieman! they are the same movie with different monsters!... oh well I am done with my rant for now...
*~Gylanah~*
hollywood has portrayed vampies as a killing machine...we are not and we do kill for fun but we don't shot and kill each other for the hell of it~~
Hollywood is here to take anything and commercialize it, either negatively or positively.
Take the BDSM lifestyle, it has not been portrayed in Hollywood as anything more than controlling and beating someone. The true life of the lifestyle is nothing like that.
When watching a movie it always good to go into it with an open mind. While ninja vampires might not be the perferred image of vamps, it is a story. Nothing more, nothing less.
Doesnt mean you have to like it, doesnt mean you have to watch it. Knowing Blade is going to be a ninja vamp movie would keep those who do not like that away. Those who do, go for it and enjoy.
I personally like the vampire image in Interview.. I was shown the beauty of vampires from Anne Rice. I truely adore her versions the best.
-Athena
yes it has
like the old saying
how do u say fuck u in hollywood?
trust me
thats hollywood just like its been said since lking4trouble ,its all about money
hollywood has refurbished the image of the vampire. brought it to the modern era. given time everthing changes! why would a vampire not?
Ok.. so if Hollywood killed the Vampire, what exactly did they kill?
What differences are you disputing between Real Life and Hollywood Vampires??
Hollywood is going a different direction
with the Vampire. The romantic, cunning,
charming Vampire is being replaced with a
more "today" kinda vampire. Today it's all
about action action and more action. So in
this, i see the vampire changing into this
"action hero" .
Now the vampire i love doesn't throw any
karate kicks or put sun block on.
I know money talks and bullshit walks...
And todays generation needs lots and lots
of this "action".
The Vampire i love doesn't gargle with a
glass of holy water or hang at the beach
hunting other vampires with his automanic
stake shooting crossbow.
this true i also think hollywood is giving a false image of a vampire....vampires are suductive and cunning,,they arent monsters they are beautiful
Now I think Emaerald is trying to put accross the same point as me.
Who do you think gave the impression that vampires where charming, charismatic, and all these things you speak of? Books and film.
In Slovac myths, the vampire is much more like a zombie, existing purely to kill, and cant even cross a river by itself.
Its books, films, the internet and human imagination itself which has made the image of the vmapire that you are calling 'real.'
If you believe that a character like Lestat or Dracula is what Vampires are really like, then who is to say that another, more matrix-esque character isnt just as accurate?
As I was saying before, even though I enjoy the films and books, I do not confuse that with what vampire actually means to me, and that isnt fiction. I think you need to define what your reality fo vampire is to get some more detailed answers.
I don't dispute what you are saying.
I kinda liked what you said because that's
another form of a "true" Vampire.
Many cultures have different types of
Vampires and i'm right into that 100%
Any movie regaurding any cultures form
of a Vampire would be wonderful to me.
Just not how Hollywood is killing these
"true" Vampires off by shoving their tripe
in our faces.
That being the Karate fighting sun block
wearing action Vampire of todays movies.
will somebody point me to the evidence that states
"VAMPIRES ARE REAL"
As I said Gorey dear, its the interpretation, and whether that exists.
In that regards Empress, I think its a phase. Everything has gone very technical and Matrix-esque (How many times have I said that today!?!) in films, but it will pass.
my point was echo darling... that if someone shows me direct proof that they exist... then someone will also show me EXACTLY what a vampire is...
nobody can show me proof that they do. because all we have is old texts from thousands of years ago, myths, rumours, legends and a stupid ammount of fictional material and media...
It isn't necessarily that Hollywood has "killed" the Vampire. However I will agree that they are starting to push things way out of proportion. One example that you all have mentioned in here. The Daywalker BLADE.... Has all the vampire strengths and his only weakness is the thrist. Now I am not exactly sure how much his stregnth and speed are multiplied compared to that of say a normal human. However I do tend to wonder... How could only one take on so many? It honestly doesn't seem possible to me. Regardless how strong or fast he was he would eventually wear himself out right?
I agree hollywood has turned the true vampire into a luagh of the generation. is there anthing that we can do about it? I mean could we do something to stop Hollywood from makin vampires look like karate idiots that only love to kill and fight , yes vampire need to kill and probably might like to fight but there is moe to a vampire that what Hollywood is showing. I agree with Empress.
well not really a laugh but i mean they are saying that vampires are things that kill and kill for fun.. i mean they do but it's not like they do it every minute of the night....and vampires are REAL!!!
of course, hoolywoods killed the rep. of vampires. noone is afraid of them anymore because they dramitize everything. they basically LIE to the public theat they're these murdering, ANIMALS!!! hooly wood sucks iass. i totally agree... read the books: fuck the movies.
wow i totally belive you the guy who just wrote above me!!!
Im not really sure i think Hollywood or the film industry world wide actually helped to create what we consider a vampire is, there are many versions of course just as there are many folk lore stories. I think our obsession with the undead helped or even fueled the demand for vampire movies and the varity of vamp styles we see today......
to be honest, i think anne rice did a lot of damage in the 70s, but hollywood has made it even worse.
but on the up note, there's a lot of indie films that have come out in the past 10 years or so that have gone back to the more raw image of the vampire.
Yes hollywood has killed the Vampire what hasn't it killed is my question
lol....yeah wat she said it has killed alot of thoughts and ideas and well alot of things ....
Hollywood has completely ruined the vampire. It is really unfortunate for all of us really. Damned hollywood.
i know right...i agree with the girl who wrote above me....lol
Will you plz quit unless you have a real
idea floating around in that fishbowl.
Thanks.
I do think they are more about the money than the quality of the film, but there are still decent vamp movies every so often.
People
Real vampires are not what you think they are.......
If you ever have the chance to meet one then you'll know.
Regarding hollywood well what can I say? the film industry really sucks this days
as i immediatly wanted to respond, it was shortly put to rest, for (mainly) Echo has posted my sentiments exactly -sometimes i just love that girl but so raw (blunt) she can be-
[throws popcorn at the 'flying Lost Boy']
possessing V5 is much different than hollywood portrays ofcourse but they keep a spot light on a quite mystical community. Hence your presious VR attendence lol
vampires are cunning, charming, and suductive...hollywood has gotten that part right...but yeah they have gotten the fighting part way wrong....vampires just don't jump out at there enimes and shoot them...we hide in the shadows untill the time is right and still we don't shoot them with a stake gun..if there even is one!!!.....they have let there imagination get to the extreme...
They make it where no one really knows any thing about vampires.
they want to make the people who know nothing bout vampires think they are monsters...so yeah they try to mold other peoples mind to think wat they want......
8 times to say the same thing over and over and over and over???
Thanks Flux.... i feel my blunted repeticism here is done :-)
No doubt. They sucked (hahahah) the life from dracula and made him a sissy.
But a great deal of the vampire movies are being set in the modern day with fledglings as the main characters. In order to survive this world, would it not be needed for one to adapt to the changing world around you? To do otherwise would be facing extinction. The ways of the past no longer cut it in this modern world. If you were to go about like Dracula in the streets of London stalking Mina, instead of having a frightened woman, you may find yourself maced. With the advent of women's self defense classes, macing may be the least of your worries. The world changes and the vampire needs to sometimes change with it.
I think its going both ways but leaning more toward the hollywood side of it agreeing with how they make the fight seens look like rambo and sorts.
So hollywood has grabbed another concept and made a trillion dollars and hell we buy the tickets and buy the movies. I believe that we all carry a concept of what a vampire is or is not in our minds at VR. Hollywood is simply cashing in on what the public in general is going to see. Gotta admit there have been some very cool movies out there, but alas they are just movies.
Just my 5 cents ;-)
it seems to mee that hollywood have come up with there own idea of what vampires are like and thay suck they put a bad name to us real vampires
No , I don't think so may be change the concept but not kill them.
I like under world
hollywoods views on alot of things are totally wrong, they just do whatever will make them the most famous and the most money.
i know that is so true i mean i am young and i am a new comer but i really do not like the cheesey movies like all of the blade movies like really suck the vampires in the interview with a vampire were like so real i mean i could see that but all of the other shit is so wrong... when you say vampire to me i would know that they do not die unless they get a steak to the heart and i woul know that they do not get the whole exstream super strength and all of that
But who knows the true nature of a vampire? The movies were the first appearence in our true life time. How can we say that they ruined it? It really depends on how the movie maker wants to make money by adding special effects, and thats what changes everything.
Shouldn't you take into consideration that becoming a vampire does not change who you truly are. Therefore, trying to place all of us into one hollywood stereotype, which ever it maybe will always be not only difficult, but as Echo has already pointed out wrong.
I fully agree with you 100% Empress. I think that they are depicting vampyres totally wrong. And It is very agrivating.
Empress you said it. Hollywood has completely screwed the real vampires over. I back you fully.
its true...some movies out there dont portray the true vampire, hollywood is killing the magnificent legend
i hope soon theyll make a real vampire movie
in my opinion hollywood has killed the vampire and tried to mold it into what evr is the most populor at the time.the dont care if there misrepresisnting(sorry cant spell) they just care about making money.
Hollywood and many of medias have a wrong impression, but that's how they are. No one can really change it. It has also become a fad to some. It's sad, really. Especially since my parents think I'm fucking nuts that I do know Vampires exist,.. But I fully agree with Echo.
There hasn't been a single book or movie made that has shown a portrayal of vampires with regards to their true origins since Nosferatu. Ever since they became popular, we've been fed this romantic notion of beautiful, powerful beings. It's all entertainment now, so if you enjoy it, great. Besides, a little brainless action is fun every now and then.
hollywood has really killed the meaning of a vampire and made it so wrong.
