Sorry about the old Twilight Zone referance, but a question poped into My head the other day.

Can you eat a Zombie without turning into one yourself?

Now before I start getting posts about ...."Ewwww gross." Lets look at this a little logically. One of the major concerns I have seen in most Zombie Apocalypse movies, besides beng eaten by Zombies, is food supplies. And being the Carnivore I am, I figure why not eat the Zombies. So this actually brought up several other questions.

Could you eat a Zombie without being infected?

Could the Biological, Chemical, agent be destroyed by the cooking process?

How fresh would the Zombie have to be for the meat to still be good? 1, 2 days?

Could it be stored like normal Meat?

Could it be turned into Jerky?

Well, most zombie movies go by if a zombie bites you; therefore it would seem that in those movies, the zombie disease or whatever you want to call it is carried in the saliva [like rabies].

So, as long as you don't eat the head I'd figure you'd be fine.

Then again, why eat a zombie unless you're a Tasmanian Devil?

Why waste good Meat?

I agree partially with ~MBK~, the virus may be in the saliva, but if it is blood born then the body of said zombi is completely infected, and not just the head, and or brain.

I mean, its not like the head is the undead part still working off of the viral rotting brain...Since the legs and arms do move, even though they are rotting away as well.

But who in their right minds would turn into cannibals simply because the zombi apocolypse came? Sure, a short of food supply would be one thing, but there are other ways to go about nourishing the body. Mayhaps hunting for wildlife such as upland bird, or big game...such as deer, or elk? Or plant life? I would think resorting to cannibalistic actions would be the completely last resort.

Though if you think you can really kill the virus via fire, have at it. Extreme heats have done worse.

If you can consider it good meat. Zombies are most likely going through putrefaction. Rotting flesh and coagulated blood don't exactly scream, 'pièce de résistance'.

And with several different versions of "Zombies" out there in media, how long before the infection jumps species?

My Wife has become a sort of Zombie Movie fan, have seen movies with Zombie Birds, Cows, Deer and even Sheep. Which sort of brought up the question aswell. If the "Zombie Infection" were to affect other species besides human, what options would one have besides going Vegan?

Well, good meat is only if the zombie is freshly dead.... Or undead for that matter.

Like said, it would have to be younger than a day or so old. But I can't imagine them inventing a zombie cannibalism movie.

I would pay to see it.... having the humans hunt the zombies down (be sure to wear your goggles and gloves so the blood does't touch your skin, you may need a hazemat suit while hunting)

hope you don't get bit in the process and chop off its head and start field dressing that bad boy ....and only go for choice cuts rump roast, thigh, and breast. Not trying to be crude.

Maybe the virus could be cooked out but I would say definitely make it well done ...even though I like my meat dripping with blood, like I scared it with a branding iron and it fell on my plate.

I say i wouldnt take that risk if it was me... I would say it would be good fresh or if you freeze the meat.. But isnt a zombie walking dead flesh anyway, so why eat rotted meat.

Good meat? A zombie is dead so the meat itself would be rotting or rotted. The infection if in the saliva would also be transparent in the dead blood of the zombie itself. so the meat, blood tainted in all ways and would in fact contaminate any that ate the zombie.

Zombies are not undead. They're ravening corpses. Let's assume some humans are resistant to the zombie virus. These people would make ideal hunters, and perhaps some of them believe that they maintain their invulnerability by consuming tasty, well-cooked zombies, kind of like people who develop a resistance to snake bite.

Zombies flesh continues to decay. "Throw some bearnaise sauce on that bad boy, and it's just like it was dead only a week."

The Iron Chef: "Cut thin slice from thigh with sushi knife. Roll in tempura, deep fry and dip in soy sauce."

Zombies will feed the fire pits to power my Zombie Earth barges, I would speculate zombies would require plenty of prep to eat, but perhaps for mulch.. Or as in the movie , labor, I could just as easy have zombies operate pulleys to pull my Earth Barge.

OK.....I would have to ask 1 question to ask here.
Now if it was a zombie that came from the grave wouldn't the "Blood" have already been removed and replaced with formaldehyde?.....hence the infection from a blood ingestion.

Dead, they are dead reanimated corpses that are decaying. And now a days the blood would be replaced slowing the process of decay. Yet the meat is tainted with death and rott, c'mon eat a azombie. go ahead, see who eats who first.

Cadre, I'm sure if you got to the thing early enough, the meat wouldn't be decomposed or starting to decay. ;P Say... under a day.

New option if this were possible in a movie [meaning if it did ever happen] - Would a barbecue be an easier and more suitable means to, well ... destroy whatever infection was in the zombie?

Of course the earth barge has livestock, and foul reservers.. All sealed from airborne viral contamination.. Any meat substance is liable for contamination. Beast, and Humans alike. Fueling large barges not only allows safe ( all though slow movement) but a means to salvage. Any materials decintsunminated. Keep in mind that Small city dooms ( powered by zombie incinorator) are established along the traveled trail.

I would think that eating the putrefied and decaying flesh of the Zombie wouldn't be the best idea.

Some steaks are "aged." Supposed to make them more tender with an extra sharp tang, like aged cheese. Zombie flesh could put a whole new zing in the meat trade. Then, P.E.T.A. would get involved and there'd be a debate over whether zombies were animal or human. ACLU would chime in and the debate would center on whether a corpse still has civil liberties. Meanwhile, the zombie meat would age more.

The only thing I can see to counter the decomposition of traditional Zombies is found within the Anita Blake series - the Voodoo priestess is able to keep the soul in the body of the Zombie which drastically slows the decomposition process. Of course, not only are these Zombies not out killing people, the ones with souls have feelings (emotional and otherwise) so it leads to the question of: Is it cannibalism or a life saving measure?

The toxins in human flesh are dangerous... which is why no one eats human flesh anymore (the same reason that most religeons forbid the eating of pork and scavenging shellfish... etc.) but...

I think that I would definately experiment on my dog.

The Idea behind most zombie movies is that the flesh doesn't decay or all you would have to do is wait a little while and the Zombies would no longer exist.

In this case If the experiment proved successful, I would zombie some cows so they don't need refrigeration (or make cow pies in your living room, or eat.) Cut off what you need for dinner.

I'd much rather have a pit full of zombie cows than zombie humans... the toxins in human flesh are dangerous... which is why no one eats human flesh anymore

Dabblers Earth Barge Furnace, When Zombies Overcome You Come To The Bardge. Every individual applying for residency to Barge City must declare an occupation, and submit to decontamination.

*Laughs* I don't know. Them Zombie Cows were down right mean. *Laughs* And the Crows became Zombies in Resident Evil because they ate Uncooked Zombie flesh. And most flesh does not become completely decade within mintues after death. Even human. Decay takes time. The danger becomes if the Zombie strain is a bacterial. Not so easy to cook out of the meat.

But the Resident Evil comment brought up an interesting point. It would be only a matter of time before the Zombie Infection would spread to other species. Then it is only a matter of time before someone would have to consider tha possiblity of tring to eat atleast one form of Zombie. Either Dog, Cow, Deer or otherwise.

As for the P.E.T.A. protection. There was a B Movie called "Zombies Anonymus" that kind of explored that.

And If We are going to BBQ. Would We want to go Charcole or Propane?

Look at Alice. She was "immune" to the virus. What if it already jumped to other species and you didn't know. Zombie cattle might not show any obvious signs if they are resistant to the strain of virus or bacterium.

If you get right down to it, even plant matter could be contaminated.....decomposing flesh becomes good compost.

I guess we will have to survive on twinkies.....since they can withstand anything. LMAO.

Plant matter is a worry. Zombie mulch could be the super new bat guano of garden miracles . . . or not. I want to bury the cat in my garden when she dies, but my family is already objecting. Imagine if I put a zombie in there?

Ive seen enough of the zombie movies that are out like the Resident Evil movies..

Thing is you shoot the zombie in the head which kills said zombie..you have a body..
now going stictly by th RE movies we learn that any animal that then eats the now dead zombie is therefor infected..i.e the Crows in the third instalment.

However maybe its just because the body was raw?

I wouldn't 'serve' zombie meat at all, due to it being totally disgusting.

But, there are cases when people eat 'disgusting' things - what's gross to one is a delicacy to another. There is a tribe in the Amazon who delight in eating dead monkeys who are wrapped in leaves and set out in the sun to rot for a few day before eating.

As far as eating zombie meat - particularily the brain - I'd be afraid that I'd contract a disease akin to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Dsease, aka 'Kuru' - The Cannibal Disease...nothing like loosing the ability to control your muscles and loosing your mind - in a painful way.

we let beef rot for 10-14 days before serving it... it's called aging.

The human body is a resiliant thing... it was designed to eat rotting meat or we would have never made it past teh stone age. Most of the people that are squeemish about eating stuff that has fallen on the floor are proen to sickness because they hae never exposed their bodies to it.

Be sure to eat them before the aging process, grind the limbs, oil it, store it, after some days you have good beef and then cook it well done and should be good as any other food source...

I am not entirely sure I believe that story.

If you presume that at least 40-50 pounds of a body is edible that is a lot of freaking meat. Especially during a time when meat was rarely eaten... especialy in teh quantities that we eat it today. Even at my most ravenous... I don't believe I could eat a body in just over a week. Then you add that it is human flesh, which has a sickly sweet taste and is tasty in small amounts, but makes you sick in large quantities (I dated a polonesian cannibal for a while 20 years ago.)

The language in the text seams excessive, bragging, and deliberately misleading in certain ways. Although I have no doubt that there is some truth to the story, I think that the truth is probably minute.

If you have ever tried to eat 5 pounds of real pork in less than a week, you know how sick you can get... headaches, etc... then multiply that by the toxins a human is exposed to that a pig is not.

I know there were 2 movies, resident evil and the one with will smith that animals that ate the flesh of zombies did turn into zombies. In both movies dogs that ate the flesh turned into zombies and in resident evil the crows or ravens turned into zombies after feasting on the available flesh.

Personally I think if I ate the flesh of a zombie that it would guarantee myself becoming one. As I am eating diseased, toxic or tainted flesh. :D

Most game and meat can be hung for three or four days to improve the final taste so assumedly zombie flesh would follow suit.

Just as an aside if P.E.T.A. is involved and discussing what species a zombie is, is it strictly speaking cannibalism anymore?

Yet would not zombies after consuming whatever, would not the tainted blood or disease be in every ounce of the zombie. Much like chemicals within the human race.

So with this being said the zombie would not be edible for feeding off its flesh would in fact change you into a zombie.

Perhaps a lye bath would be an option, then nuetralize the lye, and cook what meat remains, maggots can also be used to eat away rotten flesh, leaving the " fresher flesh" for Lye Treatment and cooking.

i think the maggots will be zombies too, no flesh in a zombie that would be untainted. So lye or maggots would not help.

In my Sci-fi universe, that is the only possibly way.

But like I said earlier I would use Zombies to Stoke the Earth Barge Power Furnaces. I also have a patent pending on a zombie Nuetralizing" ray,"that can differntiate between Live people, and Zombies.

The Lye is spectulation.. As in imagining, so to say it is " wrong" is like debating the Marital Status of the Number 5.

although if given the terrible choice in a catch 22 where if you can't beat them -- join them situation i choose to eat raw zombie flesh over being bitten. otherwise i will avoid the eating of people alive, dead or undead alike until further refference.

Lye is used to cure the meat and since zombies are speculations of dead flesh curing them so they would not rot would be false hope.

But using them as kindling, great power source could be used from this. so i shall go along with that.

Mbk, not actually, maggots are formed at least after about 7 days of dying tissue, by or little friends the fly. Worked in a morge for several years and some of thes bodies that came in depending on heat and enviroment the larva stage could happen within a couple of days and thus the little wiggles would soon come.

A gross aspect to see, yet natures way of sending us back to mother earth. thats why we use preservitives to keep the body more after death. Why? who knows but we do.

so with this said zombies would have some sort of maggot or parisite apon it, so tainted meat would be everywhere.

But how would the maggots really get in there? I mean, sure, if a fly flew into a zombies mouth and down the throat... but it'd seem that'd make it die.


But still... depending on how early you got to the zombie in question, they meat may not have been so tainted.

Remeber dying skin would crack and leave sores or where the zombie had been hurt so thus it starts.

Would be probably to scary for real tv if depecting zombies would look or act depending on collective thoughts of everyones post here. But a movie written by all the responses of look and how they would die would be a real plus.

Remember, please: Zombies do not typically consume an entire human because they also have a short attention span. They bite and move on.

That's why you have a soccer mom toddling along with half her face gone, searching for a good bite instead of a good line.

So, many zombies are fresher than others and I see a new job description emerging for our menu: zombie wrangler.

Zombie wranglers would cull the herd, separate the somewhat fresh from the truly aged.

The telltale would be maggot growth.

Our skin teems with bacteria. Flies generate some of the worms, but they also seem to appear out of nowhere. If I cut a lemon in my kitchen, fruit flies will eventually appear. Where the feck have they been hiding?

So basically what we are saying here is this:

It would have to be a turned zombie that wasn't "raised from the ground'.
It would have to be a recent infection, possibly not even turned yet, but on the verge of it.
Chop off its head (I would suggest hanging upside down like cattle to drain out all of the blood).
Cut up the meat for cooking (I would suggest thinly sliced as it cooks more evenly).

I would also suggest nearly burning the first piece black before eating to prove if the infection could be killed and cut back on heat later if proved accurate.

But still the really big question of the day is this:

WHO WANTS THE FIRST PIECE?

I mean, if it didn't work...you are dead, right?

Animal Testing

Boo Boo... yeah I know... but there are uncruel forms of animal testing...
In the carribean we have 3 ways to test if Barracuda is poisonous.

1.) You put a piece on the ground, if the ants avoid it, it is poison
2.) Put your cat in a travel cage, adn if your cat pukes it up, it is poison
3.) Feed a small portion to someone who has been poisoned by barra alot and has tolerance to it about half an hour before you serve others, if they get sick it is not as bad or dangerous (usually) as teh first case.

So you feed a cat zombie meat and see if it pukes it up
and if it doesn't see if it turns into a zombie.

Then you will want to test it on someone who isn't affected normally by the Zombie Plague.

Hmm interesting topic... may I suggest the use of vinegar.. it is has many good qualities that could clean the meat, and of course add flavour as well... Pickled zombie, I can see it on the supermarket shelves now.

Well, considering that every story we know about zombies says that being scratched or bitten will turn you into one, I don't think so.. If it's bodily fluids is what carries the agent, don't you think you might not want to ingest it?

Then again, since burning zombies seems to keep animals from getting the infection, it just may...

But then there's the thing about how "fresh" the meat is... Normally, reanimated zombies are dead and decaying and continue to decay at an accelerated rate. I don't think you'd want to eat it...

That being said, the next two questions don't even need an answer as both are just a flat "no".

I have perfected a tech solution on Earth Barge 2s Science Lab.. A flash dry freeze process. Using The afor mentioned Brine to prepare the meat.

I'd have to agree that the meat would be rotted...it would be about as healthy as eating week old (raccoon or possum) road kill! So, even if you didn't become "diseased"...you'd be looking at bochilism (I know I spelled it wrong!!), at the least! lol.

And Kglitterous that is an interesting point. Even though many would believe animal testing to be cruel, it is generally how We have originally found what was safe to eat. We would watch what the animals would eat and would not die from. But the question is how do you judge when an animal is "Zombie Plague" infected? Especailly if it is one that is already a Carnivore or Omnivore to begin with. (Aside from putting a couple of rounds in it and watching it get back up.)

I have seen most discuss how the flesh would be rotten on the "Zombies" and whle this is true with most "Burial Risen Zombies" a recently "Turned Zombie" however should still have enough "Nonrotting Flesh" on it to be concidered fair game. Especially if it is withn hours if not a day or two.

I think it depends on the climate. If you're in a hot, moist climate a day's effect on the zombie would be different than in a dry, cold climate.

I think this would make an interesting plot in a zombie movie, survivors eating zombies before zombies eat them or herding zombie cattle.
I wouldn't risk eating zombie, I don't think the infection could be destroyed at a normal cooking temperature.
"The Zombie Survival Guide" says never to eat zombie. It's a great book, answers almost any zombie questions.

Zombie meat being used in tacos - plausible - ye or nay?

Completely doable... don't forget to reuse the pepper spray to make red sauce; or you can simply saute' the eyeballs with tumeric and you don't need additional seasoning.

I have a recipe for "Killer Zombie Guacamole." The chiles are from New Mexico and will sterilize your innards reducing the zombie virus to minor butt-searing, yet oddly satisfying, diarrhea.

I would have to wonder about jacob crutchfield disease. You may not want to eat humans, dead, alive or inbetween.

Also, depending on your philosphy of Zombies, if the flesh itself is animated, it may be hard to cook and eat. That nice rump roast may well jump out of the oven. You might have to try other methods such as nailing the meat down to a board and grilling it over an open fire. You better be pretty quick with that fork too.

Someone mentioned pickling the meat. Sort of like picked pigs feet. One could have pickled Zombie feet. A little smelly for sure, but might be tastely. Just don't leave and shoes around the foot may try it on.

How about Buffalo wings. Just take the arm and and barbeue sauce.

White meat or dark, proably only have dark meat I suppose.

You could make sausage out of the intestines. Zombie Brats, on the grill.

Zombie burgers would have to be thoroughly cook though, don't want e coli or anything.

E coli comes from feces.

The only reason you find it in hamburgeer is because the modefn process of meat cutting is very sloppy. If the meatcutters slice open the digestive track somewhere along the process they will not clean the machine and throw out the contaminated meat. They do not clean the machines properly daily at most plants anyway and sometimes the corners have months old meat clinging in the corners.

I was going by the destroy the brain concept... in most of the movies once you have destroyed the brain... even the severed bits loose motor control... I suopse there is some telepathic link between severed body parts.

It would be interesting... if the zombie is telepathic with it's rotting zombie parts... if you could have a master zombie that could control other zombies because of the telekenetic power with dead meat... slowing down the rotting process in meat and thus not needing refrigeration.

I think we need to think about this way. We destroy the head of a zombie to stop the said zombie from killing us. This doesn't destroy the disease that is inside of their bodies. Therefore, logic says that if we eat the meat of an infected Zombie, we run the risk of getting the infection because of the blood. Blood runs through every part of the body meaning the whole zombie body would be infected and I am just not willing to eat a fingernail from an infected.

Think of it this way, (I know how Aids is transmitted just hear me out). If someone from AIDS dies, the aids doesn't die right away, it's still in the blood.

You+Eating+Zombie=New Zombie .
You would be infected as soon as you eat it.

the disease would not stop after killing the zombie, burn it.

I think I would have to say that if You were to eat a Zombie that You would get infected with whatever disease it may carry.

Let's say that a person has AIDS or HIV or some sort of STD. Then, that person dies and comes back *somehow* as a zombie. If You were to eat that zombie then You would *sadly* get infected with whatever diseases that zombie was carrying at the time of their death. So really, I don't think You would turn into a zombie, I just think that You would get whatever diseases the zombie was or is carrying at the time it died. Only, I believe that You would get the disease but only nine times worse. Because, You have to think logically about it.

A person who had a STD or some sort of other disease that killed them, dies and then comes back as a zombie and then You go and eat that zombie, You might have that disease plus all the other diseases carried along with death. Such as bugs or small animals that feed on the dead skin and/or organs. Those animals/bugs carry diseases as well.

So.. Really, I hope You don't go and eat a zombie. Otherwise You'll end up dead. And if You died or if anyone died of something like that, I think I'd cry. =*[

Well, eventually the AIDS/HIV dies in humans (about 16-20 days depending on the way the body is handled). The Blood needs to be active in order for Aids to live as does any disease with exemption of Cancer, Tumors or some sort of growth. When someone with Aids gets a cut, you won't really get the disease by touching it. Once it is exposed to air it dies, the problem is, you may have a cut on your fingers/hands/body that you don't know about and the contact is what would give you Aids which is why we in the heath care profession wear gloves. Just like kissing someone with Aids isn't going to transmit it. Just like touching a Zombie wouldn't make you a zombie, you have to have certain contact in order to get infected. This is why biting is the best way for a zombie to infect a human. But honestly, not knowing the genetic make-up of a zombifying disease is the real problem. If it's like a disease like AIDS for instance, that would be the meat could possibly be eaten after 16-20 days but who would want to risk it?

A good solution to this puzzle would be to make zombie the required ingredient in an episode of "Iron Chef" and see what they come up with.

LOL! A good idea! We could even go further and have a huge Food Network cookoff, in which the likes of Emeril, Martha Stewart, et al would have to wrangle in their own zombie, put it down, and get to cookin'...sweet!

I was pretty sure Julia Child was a Zombie... but she died 5 years ago... or so they say. (They, being a friend of my mother, that was a friend of Julia.)

Zombies are near dead, but have not died. Any human body fluid is dangerous to ingest. So I wouldn't recommend eating one, especially a Zombie.

Ha. Nice. So techinically, I am right about the STDs thing I posted earlier. If You were to 'eat' a zombie within ohhh.. Let's say 24 hours or 48 hours. I think, *correct me if I'm wrong* that the STD or AIDS in the bloodstream would still be alive, so to speak. I mean, not all of it would be alive but I'm sure there would be at least a good few hundred or so of the disease would still be in the blood stream. I am pretty sure I am wrong but I just think that I *might* be right. So really.. If You were to 'eat' a zombie, the fluids in the body would digest into Your stomach, be draw into the blood stream, carried to the heart where, more then likely, You would die. So please be smart people! Don't eat a zombie! It's bad for Your health. And, I bet it taste nasty. ;)
