Twilight, Well, can be appealing to people that follow a romantic point of view of Vampires. The movie is the opposite as the other movies about Vampire. IE 30 Days of night, which portray vampire as sanguinary creatures. also, young people love those young and good looking Vampire. I saw the movie, was ok....not great.

Sparking "Vampires" who dont kill humans because there "friendly" yet the main character says "what if i'm the bad guy?" to which my reply is "hahaha, yeah right"

It breaks mosts of the "rules" to which alot of us like to see in vampire movies and books. And the counter argument to that? "Its just a different take on the subject" - It crosses the line by miles.

The next "breed" of vampire's will be non-blooding, impotent, day-walking mortals who read and write poetry and hang around on vampire sites claiming to be bats.

Haha wait, we already have those XD

Twilight sucks.

I guess Twilight glamorizes vampiric life and makes it to look like it's the it's the novel thing to do. Which then lowers the standard and makes a mockery of more historical figures also lowering the standard for future folklore.

Twilight is not Romantic.
lol
I didn`t read the book yet!

The main theme:

On my opinion Twilight movie is just using the vampire theme, just like many other hollywood movies of today.
It`s a Romance movie (not a Romantic one), not a vampire movie. The problems of vampirism are just decorating the image. The same story could happen if he was an alien and she didn`t know.
There are action movies that seem vampire movies too but they are not, just like this one.

Another thing that makes twilight seem false is the quantity of "unlikely" contained.
All movies are dreams of artists but the good ones have the quality of being plausible.
Verisimilitude of a movie is an important thing.Mainly when we deal with a fantastic theme.

The lack of expressiveness of the main actors!

Ridicule metaphors like: "You are like heroine to me"(or something like that).
Hello: heroine is highly addictive but also highly toxic, not simply dangerous. Maybe you could say that o your wife after 30 years of marriage, but even then it`s not a very romantic way of saying she is needed in your life.

If you want a Romantic vampire movie see Blood and Roses or Coppola`s Dracula.Even the hunger has a good amount of Romanticism, despite (or maybe because of) the ending.

The good things about the movie:

a great quality of the photography and sometime(only sometimes) a good image editing;

good music (the music is a very important part of a movie!)

Another bad thing:

Is made after the commercial recipe of Hollywood movies: introduction, conflict, musical moment, peak, and:

happy ending
with a possibility of continuation!

Twilight was unappealing for reasons including but not limited to the poor acting, the lack of plot, the sparkly vampires, the excessive use of makeup, and the fact that nothing actually happened in it, thusly making it one of the biggest stupidest heaps of cinematic pish I've ever wasted my time watching.

twilight can also become unappealing just because so many people are talking about it. I happen to like it, but I know some people who don't even want to hear about it because it's talked about so much on the forums and whatnot.

Twilight brings the reader into a world where vampires can be good or evil. But goes to show that they do follow a code and live a decent way of life.

Vampires are suposed to be monsters, when you take the monsterous away from a fairy tale... it devalues culture. Art must challenge you, test you, if it does not, it is a simple opiate. This arguement can also been made for religion.

Some people are too stupid to be inthralled by anything but opiates.

Twilight gives a new twist to the Vampire style. The movie was appealing in the sense that Edward was so handsome, all the girls thought he was a hunk, and he could hear them all, except for Bella. The story is refreshing and new. The book (s) were much better than the first movie. The whole Twilight thing has taken the nation by surprise. It seems like now, everyone loves Vampires!

You could ask this question about EVERYTHING under the sun.

Haggis is very appealing to some, while most are DISGUSTED by the thought of eating sheep entrails.

Reading is a great pastime for some, while others prefer to watch films or videos.

Some like baths, some like showers.

The list goes on and on. Not everyone is going to like the movie...any movie. Not everyone appreciates romantic vampire tales, not everyone appreciates the scary, bloodsucking creatures with glowing eyes....

It's all a matter of personal preference...just like nearly every other thing on the planet lol.

Likes and dislikes...we all have em!

I read the books and found them interesting for the romance side of things. But as a vampire styled book it missed the mark by miles... give me a juicy Stephen king's Salem's lot instead, I rather enjoy the horror vampire. The one that stalks its prey and is a killer.

Sparkly vampires just don't cut it for me.

I haven't seen it so I'll judge from what I read/heard, many want to have an endless love, especially teens, so that's what I guess it is liked.

Disliked: its cliche', romance, it is not liked by everyone.

I have not seen the movie nor do I have the desire to. I do have an opinion about it based on veiwing short advertising clips. It is yet another one of Hollywoods money makeing ventures once again molding the vampire to meet the politically social correctness of todays mainstream society , not to mention the fact that it is geared mostly for the tweenies , it covers a broader canvas of people willing to spend the money.

"Twilight" is primarily intended as a series (both literary and cinematic) for young adults. It's crossover success into the mainstream seems primarily the result of its vampire subject matter, a very popular theme, together with its romanticism. Its plot (referring to the movie) is rather pedestrian and its characterization of vampires, while praiseworthy for not depicting them as one-sidedly "evil," is decidely intended to appeal to the overly dramatic romantic dreams of junior-high girls. And in this it succeeds remarkably well. However for the more sophisticated adults amongst us, it was an overall disappointment. And no, not for its lack of sexual content, either.

Frankly, I found the absence of sex acts in the movie quite praiseworthy as in today's pop-culture portrayals, the depiction of casual sex in and throughout everything seems to be considered pretty much a requirement and without ever addressing the deeper emotional and spiritual implications of such irresponsible immorality. However, as I understand it, the next "Twilight" movie has decided to bow to Hollywood pressures and throw in the near-obligatory sexual involvement of the main characters. A pity, in my view.

As far as the 'vampire' aspect goes, it missed by miles, especially from an adult point of view. Where's the sex? The violence? The intensity?

Twilight is 'cute' for the teeny boppers out there though.

The companys who are marketing the Twilight items that are on sale are making big bucks on this movie. Summit entertainment and NECA are cashing in, as is Stephanie Meyer. This movie has produced more revenue on the Twilight items such as buttons, jewelry, trading cards, perfume, figurines, key chains, bracelets, t-shirts, totes, and probably more. Now there's a reason to love Twilight!

What makes Twilight unappealing to most is that it is so appealing to others. It's funny but the most common form of conformity these days is rejection of conformity.

I have read the books and seen the movie. The movie has some breathtaking photography and I like the soundtrack. That's as far as the appeal for me.

But being a writer, I appreciate the books for the style of Stephenie Meyer. She has a beautiful way of expressing things without being explicit and verbose.

I think it's refreshing to have a movie about vampires where they're not tearing eachother apart alot and that she manages to convey the sexual desire without having to resort to huge gratuitous sex scenes.

I think it's different, sure it's not the kind of movie I usually enjoy when it comes to vampires, but I liked the movie and the books personally. Beign a bookworm, of course I will always enjoy a book over the resulting movie...

Blessed be.

First it's important to distinguish between the book and the movie.

I might be able to stand 90 minutes of escapist film, but to spend hours on a 500+ pages of a book which mainly describes adolescent longing and speculation on why someone did or didn't look at the heroine, is another matter.

Would I have been willing to do so when I was an adolescent? A qualified maybe.

The "good" vampire is not new. Anne Rice explored the same with Louis, only she should the philosophical twists and agony he suffered in achieving a moral equilibrium.

We don't see any of that in Twilight. It's post-Rice, bleached white, even the morals are sparkly.

Vampires being evil 100% of the time would be boring, so Technicolor, and not reflective enough of humanity, which is where Meyer hit's home, at least insofar as her version (Mormon) of a home goes: families who live by rules, abstinence, the usual high school outcasts only they're paranormals.

Take it from a twilight- obsessed fifteen- year- old.

My highschool is completely crazy for the series- and why? Because they think it's cool or popular. It is new- and exciting to them.
They all go to see the movie- just because they think that that is what makes them cool, that they are able to talk about what everyone else is talking about.

For me on the other hand, it is a place for me to really escape.
I am able to forget everything bad in the world for a while.
Just lock myself in my room and just keep reading and reading until I feel better.
It is addicting, yes.
Almost like I have my own little world that I can run to. Just imagine myself as Bella and know that everything will be better in the end.
Plus, I love the poetry of how Stephenie Meyer writes. Her style of writing is so vivid, you get buried in her words.
The problems will always still be there when I emerge from the book, but, this way I have time to think about a solution.
I mostly read when im upset, or mad. The book actually makes me feel alot better- as opposed to music, hurting myself, drugs, etc.
It is exactly the same thing- just my choice of how I deal with stress.

Do I tell you that your music is disgusting? Do I tell you that it is wrong or annoying how crazed some people become over that tune, or whatever it is that you yourself does to relax and feel better?
NO, I haven't. Don't. And never will.

But all of you have no problem bashing against my escape, do you?
It is my relaxer- and it really hurts when you are talking about it like it is just some other annoying teen trend.
It very well may be to some people, but not me.

I AM NOT GOING TO TELL YOU TO STOP VOICING YOUR OPINION, but next time you're about to say something about Twilight, just remember me.
That's all I ask.

Okay... NOT counting the movie... Twilight (the book) Was an enthralling love story which ANY teenage girl loves. And the storyline... most teenage girls SAY they feel like that... They say that the feel like they relate to Bella but it's probably because they want to BE her... because they think Edward is this oh so romantic character with a dark past and a dark secret. And they want to be the one with Edward and I'm sure many have thought about it...

Now for ME personally... I liked the storyline... I thought it was a beautiful story. Romantic... But for me... I just couldn't see myself with Edward like some other girls would... Why? Because he was an idiot... He was arrogant. And jealous. He thought he'd protect her by LEAVING even though he should have known that would not be the case... And I believe it was utterly selfish of him to leave and BREAK her like he did... *coughs* Sorry... went off subject a little bit...

Anyways. As for the movie. It SUCKED. IT was the most HORRIBLE piece of crap disappointment that I have EVER had the displeasure of wasting $9 on. It CUT way more than HALF of the book out of it. That movie absolutely BUTCHERED the book. IT was disgusting. Robert Pattinson... He is ugly as all get out.... And his acting is even worse. Same with Kirsten Storm Whom I actually thought would be GOOD to play the part and MAN was I wrong. It was all completely over acted. And I don't even see how anyone could think it was even KIND OF okay. Because it SUCKED and anyone with half a mind could tell.

As for why people wouldn't like it... they're probably SICK of the fact that anyone who has read Twilight or seen the "movie" now somehow thinks that they are some kind of HUUUUUGE vampire fan when they don't even know what the true legend of the vampire IS. I love Twilight.... but I hate seeing all these girls at school just dying over it and Edward Cullen. It was cute at first but now it's just disgusting and if I have to see another shirt with Robert Pattinson on it, I think I'll puke. I have girls in my school who even just ACT like the like Twilight cause it's the popula trend now. BLEHHHHHH!!!!!!

*cough cough* I am done with my rant now...

Though I DID just finish a big rant. I DO agree with Vampchica4. There ARE true fans out there. And I was SOOOO obsessed with Twilight till I got sick of it... but I did read the first book at least ten times because it's relaxing... It's a good book to read when you're depressed or stressed out about something... It's a good way to lose yourself for a while. Everyone has that outlet. I've gotten to a point where I have trouble reading nowadays because I am too sensitive to what the characters in the book are going through... So it usually has to be a book I've already read a bunch of times... like Twilight...

Even though I did enjoy the movie. I found it a little unplesent to think that a 17 year old girl and a 17 year old boy (which has been 17 years old for a 'long time') He is clearly older than her mentally and seen things from before she was probably born!

Please don’t think I am trying to step on any toes here gentlemen that read this, but this is one mothers view of Twilight and Edward. I have told my 14 year old daughter time and time again to not to expect to find an Edward, he does not exist in the real world.
The movie Edward had morals of Mother Teresa the real world Edward would have banged her in the first few chapters of the first book.
I think the books and the movies should come with a warning label on them. “Caution you will not find a real Edward”.

I think that GalFriday made an excellent point. I confess that when Twilight was first published, I poored over it's pages and frantically consumed every word. Sure there's the fact that the vampires don't resort to killing humans to remain...alive? And the fact that it's basically just a love story with sparkling, "vegetarian", vampires, but I was absolutely enthralled in the story anyway. But once it got popular, and it seemed as if everyone had read the book I immediately began to confess my dislike for it. I guess it just got to a point where every time I tried to talk to one of my friends, the same stuff about the same book [twilight] seemed to poor from their mouths. It just got to a point where I couldn't take it. I even had one friend that would obsessively write fan fiction based on the books. In fact she still does.
But I think what had innitially attracted me to the twilight books, was the fact that it revolved around vampires and other "creatures" of fantasy.

omg, fallenangel51, I just had a revelation from your post! I remembered myself as an adolescent and my mom shooting down all my romantic fantasies.

Don't get me wrong, she was doing what she thought right based on her experience and to keep me from getting hurt, but her words hurt because I felt that my belief in true love was so pure and strong and filled with light that it cast a protective shield around me and made me different from her.

I don't believe in love as so pure and everlasting anymore, but I still have hope which Mom lost or buried.

I finally get the Twilight thing.

I read the book first (big mistake). After reading the book I was majorly disappointed in the movie. But I'll give New Moon a shot. I've read 3 out of the books. We'll see if the movies get better or not.

MBK -

"I think we should also include vampires can't:

A) Procreate.
B) Sparkle.
C) Have sex.

All three are included in Twilight. Ridiculous."

While the "sparkle" aspect of vampires in "Twilight" is most certainly just as ridiculous as you say, being the sole result of the author's own creative license, yet from the earliest Slavic accounts on, "vampires" have been depicted repeatedly over the centuries as more than capable of having sex and procreating. The offspring of "vampires" with Human females have been called Dhampirs for several centuries, in fact.

Should such still need to be reiterated, the vampire trait most characteristic in Eastern European lore, far pre-dating and overshadowing the later blood-drinking claim, is their "insatiable" and at times "obsessive" "sexual appetite" (e.g.; "The vampire of folklore is a sexual creature, and his sexuality is obsessive– indeed, in Yugoslavia... he is apt to wear out his widow with his intentions...." -- Vampires, Burial and Death: Folklore and Reality; P. Barber, 1988; p. 9).

That's only one small quote on the subject from only a single academic study on vampire lore by Slavic researchers at the doctorate level. There are numerous quotes attesting to the Slavic "vampire's" insatiable sexuality and well-evidenced reproductive virility found throughout almost all academia, including books written by such luminaries on the subject as Dr. Jan Perkowski, Dr. Bruce McClelland, and Dr. Alan Dundes... not to mention the writings of historians from the 17th through 19th Centuries, as well.

My point here is to simply illustrate how easy it is for modern views of "vampires" to be so strongly formed and cemented by Westernized fiction (Hollywood, Anne Rice, Stephanie Meyer, etc.) that all such admitted fictions end up ecllipsing and, ultimately, replacing entirely the facts as revealed by the actual accounts and studies from doctorate-level vampiriologists and Slavicists.

One wonders how long it will be before the "sparkle" trait introduced in "Twilight" ends up being accepted wholeheartedly by the general public as vampire "fact," as well. ;)

I disagree Upir,

There are 3 phases of vampire lore.

Scary, Rediculous, and Campy.

At one time in society I'm sure that the Slavic people though sex with a vampire very scary, so it became part of the predatory nature of the myth. When the sexual nature becomes acceptable, and even desirable (by both the vampire and the victim) it becomes Rediculous.
Elvira is campy, and thus becomes anjoyable again.

Twilight, if you want to keep it out of the realm of rediculous, must either make love a scary concept... and insatiable pure love a source of fear (which I'm sure it is for a teen) or it cannot stand as folklore.

I wonder how long it will be before "sparkling" vampires become a part of Campy Vampire Lore, just as Elvira (and others) have made the sexual vampire campy; and Buffy, has made teh-Vampire-with-a-soul campy &c.

what makes twilight appealing to me is that 1) I'm a book lover....and despite the story line, it's a great book. the way it's written, the words used, the metaphors and analogies, all wonderful, same goes for The Host, Stephinie Meyer's other book. 2) most people who don't like twilight say "oh, it's a cheesy vampire story" but it's not....it's not a vampire story, it's one of the greatest young love stories of all time.....it just happens to have vampires in it. 3) I can relate....and that is what I think the main thing is for every book anyone reads...how well they can relate to the character(s).

what makes it unappealing is the whole vampire bad wagon craze that followed the release of this book. now all of the sudden, it's cool to like vampire, and you see all these stupid girls who though vampires and goth people were stupid before, walking around trying to look like alice cullen......I wanted to be a vampire BEFORE it was cool to be a vampire....and it feels like that's being stolen from me by the pop trend crowd.....lame

but even still, I can't deny the fact the the twilight saga (eclipse especially) has helped me get through some shitty times and walk a very rough road....

commercialized Hollywood at its finest hour..
what better then a sappy teen angst movie that gives a very feminine "pretty boy" hope of being something other then what he really is..
yes.. you too can buy the magazine or watch the weekly show where they talk about the new movie coming out..

And yes I read all 4 books before the movie came out. They were ok. But, I am by far not a teenager, and have no issues expressing my feelings.. (seems to be the theme, why she lost Edward in the first place and vice versa)

I felt sorry for everyone else who watched the movie without reading the book as I was sure too much would be "lost in translation"..

To me it was the fact that a woman who was so sheltered all her life, wrote these books.

She not once read, saw, or heard any vampire stories. She wasn't allowed to. Her reason for writing the books was because she had a dream about them. Chapter 13 of the first book was the dream she had.

The dream was of this 17 year old boy and 17 year old girl sitting in a meadow. A beautiful meadow at that. The boy Sparkled. The girl was more then attracted to him.

And from that, a 4 book series was writen.

I know I stated this in my above post but after reading more of others posts...

most of you don't look into the person who wrote it at all. She was new to the vampire scene. She wrote it for her. Her sister insisted that she send it in, so she did for fun. She left it more open for you imagination so you could relate better. She put in hidden messages. For example, It's better to wait till after your married to have sex.

The girl was 32 when she had the dream!

There is no way she had no reference for vampires.

Writers also do research for their books, so it is unlikely she did not know that she was diverging significantly from vampire tradition.

Just because it's TRADITION doesn't mean she has to copy EVERY other legend out there. She made up her OWN story for HERSELF... I get why people would be upset about how she didn't follow any of the other traditions... but... It was STILL a good book. Amateur and honestly it WAS badly written in a few parts but with every books she HAS improved SO much it's not even funny. I like the first book just because I know it so well... but the fourth one was VERY well written... I'm not saying it was a masterpiece. But it was good. I think...

You know what I think? I think I'm so sick of hearing the word Twilight that I want to puke. I'm sick of seeing it everywhere... I'm sick of seeing those tshirts. I LOVED the books when they came out... but all this crap about it has kinda ruined it for me.

Going back to the comment about how vamps can not have sex, sparkle, etc...

IT IS A FICTIONAL BOOK
need I remind all of you that Stephenie made the entire thing herself? Now to me, that is pretty damn impressive.

Honestly?
If you guys are going to start talking about it like that, then why don't we start bashing Dracula and Interview with a vampire, too?!
Or are you just talking like this because someone decided to bring a few new things forth that no one had thought of before?
All legends were new at one point, too- though I would never go as far as to say that Twilight is a new legend...

it is her book, and she has a right to add whatever she wants to it.
And about the whole sex topic- why not?

Technically, both Edward and Bella do have what is necessary to have kids.
So Edward's body has been frozen for 100+ years. Then he would have the exact same sperm count as he did when he was turned.
And Bella was still mortal when they first had sex, any way.

Yes, I do get very emotional over this.
I am not trying to talk anyone out, though. you all are entitled to your opinion.

Vampchica -

We do understand (or I do, at least) the dream that "Twilight" represents, especially for young women: the dream of finding a young man who, in addition to being attractive and mysterious, is also unique, powerful, an outsider, supernatural, and who... as unique as he is... has chosen to love, to protect, and to champion an ordinary Human girl, the girl-next-door that almost all young women can identify with. And just as importantly, he is also a young man who truly needs her care, her love, and her understanding in ways and to degrees far beyond that of all the immature, shallow, sex-crazed, preening and posturing normal young men constantly surrounding and hounding women like her.

In Edward, Bella finds her strength... and in Bella, Edward finds his... a vampire and a Human girl, together forever.

Women today are starved for true romance and appreciation from real men, men of substance and depth, instead of the self-serving, self-absorbed, arrogant males passing themselves off as men through constant pressuring and demands for sexual gratification that passes for "romance" today.

In this day and age when chivalry is dead, when young men so seldom understand, appreciate, or respect young women, when a mother (as stated previously here) feels she must teach her own daughter that men like Edward no longer exist, that men who act with maturity, self-respect and class are female ideals that must be compromised if they are to have some degree of love in their lives... then even more the thought of a young man like Edward (whether vampire or not) is extremely appealing and desirable.

And if "Twilight" helps keep such ideals alive and helps young women not compromise their standards and their dreams simply to have a "boyfriend" or, eventually, "husband" someday... then I hope an entire series of "Twilight" movies are made.

I have a question.

Why is it creepy and disgusting when a 50 year old hits on an 18 year old...

But when an immortal bloodsucking parasite, well in excess of 300 years does it, it's SEXY!?

He's an obsessed stalker who is LITERALLY torn between LUST AND MURDER.

HOW IS THIS APPEALING!?

It would be like dating a cannibal, not sure if he is eyeing you up for the sack, or the dinner plate!

AUGH!

They are equally obsessed with each other ;)

Let me just add... an author can do whateverthehell the want with a their own story. Writing is all about creativity, and making things your own. Since when do we tell writers to no longer take imaginative liberties? Sounds like the old days of burning books because they say things we may not like.

Twilight certainly was not the first series to introduce vampires procreating- Blade did it, and even Josh Whedon did it with the Angel series ;)

People of all ages like this series, people of all ages don't like it. I agree with GalFriday's statement that most of the people who hate it are hating it because a ton of people like it, they don't want to conform, and so they end up conforming anyway to just a different point of view.

As for its romance, well... most people rather romantic relationships as opposed to relationships with zero passion.

For those who hate the series, I can only buy into the reasons of not appreciating the writing style, and/or preferring more sophisticated, adult materials. Other than that, there's not a real valid reason to knock it. Just like Harry Potter, Twilight is also responsible for for literacy of a new generation. And although Twilight isn't as amazing as Harry (in my opinion), all deities know we sure has hell need more readers out there. *Kudos to the writers of the world that gather the flocks by the millions* And may the youth graduate to another book series after this one.

No offense ment, but you contradicted yourself in a way. I understand we all have our own opinions as you yourself said, but you just tried to push through your own opinion to try to override others.

Not everyone likes Twilight. And as I said, I find the fact she (Meyer) made sparkling fairies and vampire procreation, utterly asinine.

LOL... I never looked at it that way before. You make an excellent point!

Females from teenyboppers up find vampires so very romantic and mysterious when, as most often depicted, those same females are merely the old-fart vampire's next "meal," and little else. And, in Edward's case, even when romance is involved, he is old enough to be high-schooler Bella's great-great-(etc.) grandfather.

Well for me, it's hard to say. One of my friends was reading it and we pretty much read all the same types of books so I picked it up and read it and I loved it. I know part of it has to do with her writing though cus it reads fast and you just want to keep going. But the reason I like it is because it's just good a good story and is still possible. People start thinking there's only one or two types of vampires when there aren't. But also, it makes it more mainstream to the public. It's kind of a way to introduce them to it.

And those of you that make the "sparkle" comments, apparently don't care. In the book the skin is described as being almost translucent. They didn't do that in the movie though.

I liked the movie for the romance parts, as it made a great love story, but at the same time I disliked it cause it was too immature like it was made more for the younger generation than the older and the fact that it made the vampires seem so fake and normal.

I think the movie was made to try and portray that vampires can be a part of society to an extent, yet they made it to where they went to school during gloomy days but would skip out on school on nice days, until Edward got closer to Bella and then started going out in the daylight. I mean seriously...for one, vampires don't glitter and shine in the sun and not all vampires have to avoid sun. Two, how do they expect to make society accept vampires for who they are, when society can't even accept half the groups that have come about such as punk, goth, emo, skater, etc...

I mean, if you don't dress like most of society then they won't accept you or want anything to do with you, yet they think that a vampire can fit into society. If that were the case, then wouldn't more vampires show themselves to the public for what they really are?

Right, Blade was already conceived... but there is still Josh Whedon's series 'Angel' where Angel and Darla have a baby. This just isn't new. And it's not new to introduce a different spin on why fictional vampires cannot be in the light. Some burn, some get exhausted, some are not affected in any way if they've fed 'recently'. It's all up to the author when you're talking fiction.

No one can say what a vampire does or doesn't do when you are talking about someone elses creation. Hell, sponges don't wear square pants and live in pineapples under the sea (an example I used before). And we've had all kinds of different depictions of werewolves as well. I find them all equally appealing and enjoy a writer's imagination.

J.K. Rowling made up her own magic that had no history in what people have known as magic. What the hell is quidditch? That's not a real game, she can't write about that! What the heck is a time turner, that's not real, she can't write about that. What the heck is this invisible portal at platform 9 3/4s?? that's not real, she can't use that! Guys... this is fiction. That means NONE if it is supposed to be true. They can take all the liberties they want with a myth and customize it to their liking. She's not the first, second, third, fourth and so on to do it. In fact, that's their job as a writer --> Make something original. You might not like it, but that doesn't mean they broke some unwritten rule- it means they followed one.

After reading through more of these posts I have to agree with Kikin and Vampchica. It is just a story. People can do whatever research they want. It's usually for location and area though depending on the writing. That's why it's called fantasy and reality.
The author has a lot more leeway with how they right. And for those that might not have paid much attention to the books, did you know that Forks, WA is a real place and the Quiluete tribe is also real up there? The only thing is that it wasn't filmed in Forks itself but that was because all the hype made that town impossible to film in with all the tourism and such.
And if any of you want a more adult novel (though it's pretty much the same writing style) the read The Host by her. It's considered sci-fi/fantasy.

And I also must agree with the one that said about getting more people to read. I think it's become lost in all the technology of the age now and that people throughout the world have gotten dumber for it. If it gets new generation of people to read then so much the better. And as far as the next series to carry on...House of Night and Vampire Academy are probably the 2 top ones for young adult...and the Vampire Diaries.

See, the whole poetic liscense thing is all fine and good. And sure, sure, you can't realy tell someone what to do because they creatures are fictional.

However, to take something like VAMPIRES ARE DEBILITATED IN SUNLIGHT to VAMPIRES SPARKLE LIKE FAERIES VOMITTED ON THEM in sunlight is somewhat crap.

And I'm sorry.

But we all remember highschool.

Who the fuck wants to spend their immortal existence re-living it?

And vampires with VENOM!? VENOM!!??!?

THEY AREN'T SNAKES!

Someone needs to revoke that bitches poetic liscense.

Because yes, they are ficitonal. But even fictional things have a number of consistent 'fact's about them, and Meyer ripped all of them out so she could make a vampire that would love her. Seriously, she ident's with Bella. BELLA! COME ON!

It's fan-fic with a publisher, people. Wake up and smell the maple nut crunch.

You don't need a license to make great stories.
That is the one thing that the government hasn't stolen from us yet.

I read all of the House Of Night books, too, and plan on reading The Host next year.
Why do you care if someone likes to relax with a book? Better than t.v.!!

Does anyone else feel like posting what books you like so that a huge wave of people can tell you that you're wrong for liking it, too?
All of you hate the craze- not the books.
Half of you have prolly never even read it, and you're bashing it!

If you HAVE read it but still hate it, well, I respect you greatly for giving it a shot!

*cough cough* CyberMonk? What the heck? You're basically trying to say that Meyer doesn't have a RIGHT to be creative! DUDE! Get over it. She wrote a book for herself. She never thought it'd be published and it was. Who cares if she didn't follow the tradition of the vampire. She was creative and THAT'S the point of fantasy books. To be CREATIVE. TO MAKE UP YOUR OWN STORY OR YOUR OWN WORLD. Some of you people seem to be forgetting that.

Everyone has a right to their opinion and so does people who write have the right to express themselves in whatever way they so choose. The books or the movie I don't think was based on any "facts" real or imagined but rather something that sprang from her imagination and she brought it to life through written word.

Yeah, and I hate onions but millions of others love them. It's really not that big of a deal. I don't understand the need for people to get bothered by other people's likes... that's the thing. I mean, when it's really not hurting any one.

I am a big fan of Stephenie's website, too.

http://stepheniemeyer.com/

and on the part where she talks about how Twilight was started, She tells us that the entire idea about it starting with a dream she had one night, where a man and woman were sitting IN A MEADOW
well, you can read more about it on the site..

the point is that she does have a right to be creative. And this is someone's dream that you are slamming.

Hah... onions are the most consumed food in the world (by weight), even more than rice, wheat or sugar; but I know what you mean because I won't/can't eat lima beans.

While it probably is rude to critique the Juvinile Genre, it should be remembered that even that class of fiction can be well written. The same can be said for fan-fic, vampire, and sacharine love.

The amazing thing is that twilight seams to combine all these elements, and it is acceptable entertainment to a generation more worldly and rebellious than the author.

And just as you have the right to defend it, I have the right to tear it to shreds.

And don't feed me that garbage, millions of people are Christian, too, that doesn't stop me from poking holes in all of their books. Or, rather, their constant variations on a theme. Heh.

I, as a singular entity, do not CARE that so many people are into it. I don't. -I-, personally, think it's crap! Useless teenybopper drivel designed to be exactly what it is. A teen romance novel, that just happens to tap into the current MASSIVE wave of love of all things supernatural.

And if she didn't think it would be published, whhhhyyyy did she submit it? NO AUTHOR thinks thier work will be published! But they hope, just like she did. Wrote it just for herself...psh. Bullhocky.

Sorry. I think it's crap. Nothing about it ISN'T crap. It's fairytale dreamycrap. And sorry, but it IS poorly written. I DID read the first one. I don't attack ANYTHING without experiencing it first.

And if you cannot deal with someone having a dissenting opinion...well...er...get off the internet? *heh*

I truly accept the reasoning of disliking it because you feel it is 'crap'. I wouldn't like to be forced to read things I didn't care for. I just think some arguments against it are better than others. I don't think a writer's freedom should be messed with, for instance.

I like going to innocent worlds sometimes, other times I like to go hellbound without even a handbasket- depends on my mood. I like having the option.

If she had created a whole new critter? I wouldn't have word one to say beyond not liking the writing style.

But when you step into a creature with as much lore behind it as a vampire has, you gotta adhere to SOME rules. You can't just make shit up because you want it to be different, and call it the same thing!

I can't call a turd a cupcake because I want some frosting, now can I?

Make it new, and you do as you please.

But if you call a rose a rose, it better look and smell like a friggin' rose.

Well, there definitely is loyalty to the original myth of vampire if there was any in this crowd... that's for sure ;) It's such a strong creation, it unnerves people to have it messed with.

Maybe the whole sparkly thing was more kid-friendly than, say, burning to death. :P

I know people really hate it... but those people will have to deal with the facts that tons and tons of other people like it, and perhaps joined this website to meet other people with this in common. They are all valid members. And that being said, these Twilight threads will continue to appear in the main forum for years to come, no doubt.

I haven't met a vampire story I didn't like :P Call me crazy, it's been done before ;) I didn't come here because of Twilight, I came here following a 'Kindred: The Embraced' fansite and found a link to it. Twilight is neat to me, but it is at the bottom of my list in vampire literature. Today, I am all about 'True Blood'. And I getting into 'Being Human' on the BBC channel.

I use to love it.

but, now, im kinda sick of it.
It's all people talk about now.
it's books. Not life or death.

people need to get a grip back on to real life, and not the fake one. they also need to quit calling them selves Bella and Edward. it's so dang aggravating.

The first movie, like the firs book, was crap.

And I'm sorry, but if yer interest in vampires was sparked by that pile of refuse, then you need to go out and educate yerself first, before coming to a website such as this.

Because this website is about LORE.

Not friggin FANFIC by some retard who's vagina gets all tingley at the thought of a vampire, but is so scared by them she has to completely declaw them before feeling comfortable with it.

The site is about everything vampires, actually :) We cater to all members vampiric reasons for coming here- rather they are ours or not.

This site isn't just about Lore, it's also for people that believe in the modern human vampire, which is something different as well. All these things are valid and included in our Vampire Database.

Exactly.
And honestly, I do respect you for at least reading the entire first book. My own twin sister didnt even get that far before she decided that she disliked it.

But the truth is that alot of people like it, and alot of people hate it. That is how it is with ANYTHING- vampiryc or not.
I personally am counting down the days until New Moon will come out!

Everyone in my house has read the series, and my son will read Twilight this school year after he finishes the Harry Potter series (he's only 9). Twilight is all over the schools.

Books are awesome, reading is awesome, I recommend reading to everyone- and you will read what entertains you. My son's teacher has a requirement that they read at home every night for at least 20 minutes... it does not matter what they read, as long as they are reading.

Stories are always going to be subjective in regards to what's good or not. For me, insulting people for reading what they enjoy just doesn't resonate. Not everyone does that- some simply say they didn't like it or they are over the 'hype'. But hype has never bothered me either. If I like something, it's still a good product to me if TONS of other people like it, too. I'm true to myself if I don't let that get in the way. I don't conform to conformists or non-conformists, I just let my own tastes guide me. And I am okay with some of my friends finding those interests of mine sorely lacking. Because in the end, it's all about me. I refuse to like and dislike things based on other people's tastes.

I was shocked to know the "old" woman at my work were creating a big hoopla about the movie and never even mentioned the love of vampires that I have! They use to make fun of me and call me "vampire lizzie" and laugh at how I logged into vampire rave and then suddenly they were buzzing bout Twilight! They haven't called me vampire lizzie for a while now.
