This is about the new movie Cirque Du Freak a vampires assistant. I have read all 12 books in this series and just from the previews I can tell that they really screwed up. I mean casting jogn C. Riley for Mr. Crepsley was so messed up,
This post is for people who have read the books or any comments about the movie. I just want your opinion about this.
I have read almost all the books also. I haven't seen many of the previews but if they fucked it up that bad i wont go see it. I heard about it comin out somewhere (can't remember where at the moment) but when i see a preview of it i'll make a decision of whether or not i will go. I may go anyway to see the full movie and judge then.
Im going to see the movie but just by the previews it looks like a SiFi Movie with bad graphics
i just saw a preview on it and it does look interesting from this preview. Like all movies there are different variation of commercials so it may be a variation commerical of it that I saw.
That is very true. I just hope they dont mess it up. i love those books.
I hope so as well. The books are awesome. Messin em up would be the worst thing.
This is the link i found for the movie. The guy that plays Mr. Creepsley shouldn't be playing him. A tall thin guy should be playing him instead.
http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/1809995368/details
look up the host of estate of panic. He should be playing the part
yea definitely. Sometimes some can play the part even though they may not look it. So he may be very capable of the part even though he doesnt look it. Thats the only explanation i can think of as to why he was cast.
Or that he has been in alot of movies recently so that would get people to go and see it
I always thought that Mr. Crepsley was a tall skinny man with long red hiar. Not a man a little over weight with an afro
Same here. He is described in the books as tall, elderly, skinny and going bald if not already bald.
I hope he can and does otherwise i'm going to be pissed off and givin the movie a bad review. I am going to go see it on october 23rd.
ok. If i dont go see it in theaters i'll get it when it comes out on DVD or rent it.
I just started reading book 1 so I will have to get back to you on this.
Good that will keep me busy for about 2 weeks!
I have gone through 4 different vampire series besides the famous/infamous Twilight.
There are a lot of good vampire serious books out there.
I just hate that one of them I am still waiting for book number 4 to come out!
I didn't even know there were any books, but I'm going to see the movie. It looks interesting.
It does look interesting from the commerical i've seen and the link that i looked at. Just going to have to wait and see after i see the movie to make my final decision on the movie.
I finished all the books last year so I am very curious to see how they do with the movie. I hope they stay true to the books, but then movies rarely ever do that.
I've never read the books, which is probably best if I'm going to see the movie. The movie looks odd, which is why I think it looks interesting. I am going to see it... maybe I'll read the books after, so I can enjoy the movie without critisizing it, at least while there lol.
I was a junior/Senior in high school when i saw them on the shelve and read almost all of them by the time i graduated. There were only a few books that i havent read and i plan on somehow getting all of them to reread them at some point or whenever i have time like on holidays and such. I am also interested in how accurate the movie is.
Uh, yeah... This movie may be just the same as the other unmentionable movie (dont wish to mention it, as it will be just another thread with another advert) that is geared toward the teenage population.
Don't think I will read the book(s) or see the movie personally. I tend to sway more toward the classics myself.
See ive read all of them 4 times each so ill know if they screw up
Hollywood is running out of original ideas...hence the remakes of classic movies...TV to movie and books to movie.
The biggest issue I have with this is...casting for the most part.WE as readers of books turned to movies is this...we have a vision of what the characters look like...then some actor or actress is cast and we don't see their face as that character.
John C.Riley is about as funny or good an actor as Will Farrel and I can't stand him...Take Land of the Lost movie...he screwed that up so bad...I wouldn't watch it if you held a gun to my head.
I will skip any "Vampire" movie where Hollywood forces it down your throat.Just because the book form was popular doesn't mean it will translate well on film.
I've read till book 4 so far but haven't checked the reviews yet.
I read almost all the books (1 or 2 i missed) and have a good memory and i will know if the messed any of it up or not.
It is true that it may turn out like another book where the books are good (havent read them but my younger sister has and has said they are awesome) but from what she said the movie sucked. However The Vampire Assistant maybe great like the books but we will have to wait and see until after the movie comes out on october 23rd to see.
I have since seen different variations of the commercial to The Vampire Assistant and all have been interesting and intriguing to me. I still want to see the movie though
From what i have seen it is similar to the book, but it is still pretty off, therefore i refuse to see it.
The only way to truly see how much off the movie is from the books is to actually see the movie. Then one would be able to judge both.
T he books were really good I hope they do justice to them in the movie
so like all the books are better?
I'll try them, thanks for the tip on the books.
i started one book i think it was book 11 but didnt have a chance to finish it. and i agree with the character slection. railey doesnt seem to fit for that hes done too many stupid movies like "step brohters" and other shit to be making this one. but you cant just judge a movie by a preview so i might go see it. you think maybe theyll do all of them?
I saw the preview for the movie, haven't read any of the books, but the movie itself looks kind of cool, as long as it doesn't turn into the twilight crap then i think it will be ok
If the movie turns out like crap then i will give it a bad review but God i hope not because in all honesty i have liked every preview i've seen so far. The books were great and the character selection for Creepsley could have definitely been better.
Well they are calling it "The Vampires Assistant" now and Cirque Du Freak is a secondary name. I have the poster, a photo and the trailer on my profile. I have never read the books nor heard of it prior. I stopped reading vampire novels a long time ago. It got boring to me after awhile. The thing one has to understand is there is an average amount of time that a person will sit and watch a movie. Therefore, a screenplay of a book is an adaptation. It will rarely follow the books except to a degree. Some characters may become a composite of several and some things just won't work in a film so they are changed. It is an entirely different medium. This is why some grumbled about Queen of the Damned but I knew when they said someone had filmed it, it wouldn't be exactly like the book. That book was very detailed and to make it understandable and able to stand alone they had to change a few things. This will probably go a little this way. Don't expect the actors to necessarily look like the book characters. They do want to make money on it. The book/s should be viewed as a separate thing because this movie will only be inspired by the books.
from the previews it seems that they are going to seriously screw up my vision of how I saw everything, so highly doubt i'll actually pay the money to see it in theaters, not even positive i'd even waste the money to rent it when it comes to dvd, guess i'll just have to see some more reviews on it
I've not read any of the books so the trailers for the movie look pretty cool to me. I'm going to see it figuring it for a light take on vampire movies anyway. Seems more of a movie about odd folks really.
But the movies are about vampires fighting a war not just about the freak show
exactly reaper. Its the books entirety not just one piece.
and the remember in the book darren had to become a vampire to save steve but in the movie he wants to become one. Now tell me how there going to go through the whole series without that fued between darren and steve. I just dont see how they can
I adore the books. I think the movie could be half way decent... I never really thought it would be a good film anyways though that didn't stop me from freaking out when I saw that they were making a movie out of it. But ehh... Oh well... I think the movie will be a decent one... the facts of the book will be a little out of wack of course but that always happens and you certainly CANNOT expect them to go by the book. *thinks* At all... Heh...
I'm so excited for the movie to come out..I've read all the books :)
i will check the movie out for something to do, not heard of the books before
Ya, movies usually ruin the books for me, because they're terrible, and short they try to condense everything from the book into 1.5-2 hours. I liked the Lord of the Rings, because it was very long (about 11 hours including the Return of the King longer edition), and almost as good as the book.
I have only read the first book of the series. I have not had time to finish the series, though when I can I plan on starting again. I was VERY surprised to see Riley cast in this movie because that is not how I imagined that character to begin with.
But, with every movie, things are distorted, taken out, changed around. I have very rarely found a movie that follows a book to the T.
Even though I tend to get disappointed I will still go see the movie (once I re-read the book to begin with)
It depends on the movie and if i've read the books. Having read almost all the books this one may match up good but may not. The only way to truly know and judge the movie and compare them to the books is go to see the movie.
I do find that sometimes reading the book then going and seeing the movie can be dissappointing. The book is always so much better than the movie. Some words cannot be brought to view...
With some books that does happen. Many love the book and the movie does an injustice to the book. There are things in all books that have movies along with them that have words that cannot be brought to view.
I dont know if this helps people but I have come across a link and it is for to see this movie for free at an advance screening sometime next week. maybe if you saw the movie before it came out in theatres it would be a better judgement of what you truly think of the movie.
http://tickets.universalpictures.com/vampire/?partner=MYSPACE
Seeing an advanced screening, does not nessessarily mean the movie will be up to par. if the individual were to see said advanced screening, this would may not entice the individual into shelling out a small bit of change to actually pay for a regular screening of the movie.
As usual, it is a marketing ploy in order to see personal views on the movie after the screening takes place, which is why when certain movies are advertised, you see interviews outside the auditorium proclaiming how "scary", "romantic", "what a thrill ride", or even "funny" the movie was.
Hell, the movie could bomb so the advanced screening could be a waste of marketing money in the long run. In perspective, if the movie needs that much of a hype, then it really could bomb, which is why it needed the hype in the first place... To get the audiences attention if the actors/actress's were little known to unknown.
did anyone get a chance to see it in theaters? It didnt come out in theaters near me yet. The nearest it is to me that i know is 30 min away. During the week i have no way to get there due to school and not being able to drive.
The script for the movie was well-written, better than the books imo. Doesn't usually happen that way, but the writers managed to raise the level on most of Shan's characters and plot twists. The spider was a disappointment, though. It's very pg and preteens will love the movie, especially boys. Selma Hayek's beard grows when she's turned on. Need I say more.
Personally I didn't like it at all. It had the feeling of a poorly made foreign film, even though most I know was filmed in New Orleans. What I have read is that it is a compilation of the first three books. Just not my cup of tea but maybe if I wait awhile and watch it again...one never knows. It was just too campy for me. It is more fantasy oriented than horror I think. I didn't think the special effects were very good. Most liked this movie from reviews I read but I am not one of them, but not so on other sites. I like fantasy and all but I don't know what it was, I just didn't like this movie, but I wouldn't put it on the worst movie list.
Here is what wiki said about the reviews:
The film has received mostly negative reviews. It currently holds a 36% on Rotten Tomatoes. According to Metacritic, the film holds a score of 43 out of 100, indicating "mixed or average reviews", based on 25 reviews. The film opened in 2,754 theaters and made $2.2 million dollars on its opening day in the US.

Well let me say I havent read the books wich is probably better since when I do I am always let down when they make it to the big screen..
Riely as a Vampire?!?! I didn't think he could pull it off as all I could picture him before was as a 40 year old step brother but amazinly I enjoyed the movie.
I dont think it made it very far into the stoyline from the book though as it ended a bit abruptly for me left me wanting the story to go a bit deeper. Hope this helps without spoiling anything
it's set up for a sequel, presumably focusing more on the war between the vampires and the vampaneze, and probably more burgeoning romance. I like reading books and seeing how they're adapted to the screen, often go in the opposite direction and read the book after seeing the movie. No problemo. Riley captured the more paternal, righteous aspect of Crepsley w/o losing his vampire edge, I thought. After all, the vampires don't kill their prey which is a main worldview the author instituted from the beginning. Very different, and so not gritty. It's a kid's movie, but not sappy.
I liked the movie.. I went to the bookstore afterwards and bought the series... i will buy the movie when it comes out on DVD. It's a teenagers movie... It isn't supposed to be scientific journal.. its a fun movie!
if you read the books before watching the movie you would know what were all talking about
The books have intrigued me and i'm waiting to go to the movie theater to go see it.
it wasn't hard to figure out what they were talking about... *shrugs* to me anyway...
I dont really like how they made it seem as if Darren wanted to be a vampire and Mr C was nice and witty. I rather liked his regal self
I thoroughly enjoyed this series of novels. I hope the filmmakers do it justice.
I watched the movie and I was disappointed with it. I am sure it was well written but think they could have used different actors for it was more kiddy then cool. There was not enough info to let you know what was going on or who the characters were and ended badly but was set up for another movie. I think there just could have been so much more done with it to make it a very good movie, as is though is just ok.
I liked watching the movie, that was before I even knew there were books about it.
Just like I enjoyed reading the True blood HBO show, before i read Dead before Dawn, and Living dead in Dallas.
The way they played on the vampires and the vampeneeze* was cool. with casting as William Dafoe, he was a great vampire but as far as the Crepsley Character, he was....comical to say the least. Far be it from me to give a good description of what I saw. It should be interesting to see the sequal, just to see how the story ends.
But the Fat man in the Limosine called Mr Tiny, was an odd character that didnt get much backstory, with the little dust urchins that were created with some pretty good cg stuff. There needed to be more build up with the whole thing. But i best go read the books before any further comment is made.
My eleven year old son just asked me today to get this on DVD. I'll keep an eye out for it. Until today I never heard of the books. He says he has read ten so far and loves them.
More nonsense to hide the facts, full stop...
or are we talking about artistic licence?
vampirerave for real vampires...well sometimes...grinz.
p,s Dab don't go there I DO respect you!
I did read a lot of the books (though I can't really remember them) But I did enjoy the movie, just as a movie, though it did seem like they rushed through a lot of things.
I got all 12 books, and reading about the movie it is based off the second book hence, "Vampire Assistant". Even though they will also be adding material that is not yet to happen until later in the series. Like you I think they messed up the movie in general.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, of course, that was before I got my hands on the books. Honestly, it's the same with any book that gets turned into a film, so much of the book is lost in the adaptation. You see it a lot with Lord of the Rings, the second installment, Eragon, Harry Potter. The thing is, taking everything from the book word for word would not play out all the well on screen, or otherwise make the film far too long.
I think they did a fantastic job on the film. I found it both entertaining and intriguing. And, I found that John C. Riley made a fantastic Mr. Crepsley. He was dark and sarcastic. And, while probably not the first person I'd picture for the part, he did a wonderful job.
All in all, I found the film to be what it was meant to be, an entertaining adaptation of the book. The acting was well done, the story was great, and overall, it was just fun to watch.
I thought the movie was great, even if it did feel a little too short.
I LOVED the series, I read all 12 books in s short days, even if I didn't like how it ended, it was sad.
Books are always such a let down for me compared to the movies. So, I'll probably see the movie but, I won't read the books.
Books always put in more useless crap than I care to know (i.e. Twilight, does anyone really need Edward's eyes mentioned 3,000 times to get the point?). A movie cuts all that crap out.
I haven't read the books though i do have them downloaded. I probably should have read them before I went to the movie but oh well. I wasn't over disappointed by the movie so I guess that means the books will be good.
I have yet to see the movie, but the books are next on my list...
These books are so amazingly awesome! I've almost finnished them.
I also really loved the film. I think the dude who played Crepsly was really good, and got the charicter spot on. However they did screw up the story in a major way. and Darren is really irritating. I think it would have been better as a tv series with the books being told on at a time, rather then three in one go which ment that it was compleatly mixed up.
still i really enjoyed it any way because mr crepsly is awesome. lol
ok i just finished the movie and i have to say it reallly sucked. If you have read the books you shouldnt watch the movie. It doesnt fallow the story at all and the only thing they got right was the names. The main part of the book was leading up to the freak show and the show in the movie was over in less then 5 min. I mean did they evev have Darren Shan there to over see his books being made into a crap film
I have actually read all the books and edited or made most of the submissions of the books in the database. I personally think the movie is horrible. The acting is terrible. The movie doesn't do the books any justice.
My question is who looked at the cast when they were auditioning and said, "We need them and their fantastic acting in this movie"... In my personal opinion Mr. Crepsley by far had the worst acting, but the movie over all was bad acting and corny lines.
I have recently watched the movie it was a different take on vampires.Im not sure if I liked it or not.
I was wondering about this movie, i haven't read the books and i wasn't going to see the movie because it reminded me of a bad harry potter/twilight deal and too kiddy... i guess if the reveiws arent too bad, it may be worth renting...
I haven't read the books and quite frankly they don't interest me. The movie was aweful in my viewpoint. It was too campy for me. It was the way they told the story that I didn't like. As for acting, I never make the judgments of poor acting because I don't have the credentials to do so and most other people don't either. It is just opinion really. I didn't find any fault with that and especially since the actors are being directed by someone.
I thought the movie was silly.
I've only read the first Cirque du freak. When I first heard they were going to make a movie I was kind of excited... but when I saw the preview I was disappointed... not what I pictured when I read the book... Like the second post said I believe, the casting was not good...
Taking into account the age of the post, movie release, I am closing this thread.
Thank You.
