On news years day I read that Russian scientist have gone under ground to try and invent something to use against an asteroid that they think will hit earth in the near future. I again saw it on the news and they had someone saying that they got their numbers wrong and the asteroid isn't going to hit earth but will be close enough that it will scrape our orbit which will deflect it.
I would like to hear everyone's thought on not whether we are going to be hit by an asteroid (we have heard these stories before) but should we be looking at creating a weapon or defense system to use against this or should we just keep believing that we are going to be safe and leave it to another generation which by then could be to late.
We have all seen the movies, what sort of weapons do you believe we should create to protect ourselves?
I like the idea of building a force field with gates in them. It will stop anything getting in unless we allow it.
The idea of using any form of weapon always leads to it just breaking up and keeps coming and in some way places still get hit.
Careful, this may turn into one of those "its not an astroid, its a planet known as Nibiru" type of threads.
If an astroid were that large, I am sure Nasa would broadcast it on CNN or other stations, to alert the public of a near catastrophic, or Earth threatening scenerio.
I'm not one to sit back and hope for the best when it comes to this sort of incident but at the moment I don't think planet earth has anything sufficently advanced to stop a large meteor from stricking if that was it's course, but I would think some sort of a deflection system would be the best option as well.
Plus I the astroid were large enough, I'm sure more than enough members of the public would see it coming via private telescopes etc before the government were ready to send out a broadcast, which I'm fairly certain would cause mass panic in any case.
You see, thats what always gets me. If an astroid were to impact Earth, then why panic? We are dead anywho... It would be an utter waist of time to go looting when you are dead in a week. Then, when it does miss Earth, then you would feel the fool, now would you not? At least those looted items may come in handy.. Until the local authorities tag and bag you, serves you right.
LOL, absolutley. I've never seen the point of panicing myself, I try to control my own destiny but when push comes to shove whatever happens, happens. You just enjoy whatever moments you have and have a giggle at the idot's running around nicking the old t.v. set, never seen much point in that myself...maybe they want to watch CNN?? Now, grabbing water, food etc I can understand, some practicality.
It is a frightening thought. We are so advanced that the probability is pretty unlikely. But if it were to happen it is hard to say what the Government would do. They may warn people, but they may not say anything for "fear" of causing panic. If it were inevitable, I'd pop a few xanax and ejnoy my final high.
Hmmm.. Something like a bomb or something to break it up into pieces? Like in that movie, Armaggeddon? If it were inevitable, then I think this would be their last resort.
I think breaking up an asteroid is actually worse; you'll end up with lots of pieces raining down on Earth, turning one catastrophe into many.
Here's an interesting idea:
Add a tether to the asteroid to change its mass. This will alter its course. It only has to change its orbit slightly to turn a potential impact into a miss.
(fast forward to 3:00 min)
Keep in mind that Russian researchers are constantly fabricating complex schemes to procure Grant funding, psuedo-science is rampant in that area.
yes...a bit like global warming in the west LOL
my suggestion would be that we send and soft land a number of thrusters on the asteroid, then as was suggested give it enough vector thrust to alter its course...if it were done far enough out, even a fraction of a degree would be enough.
i will say that its a practical reason to continue funding the space program.
~W~
Any significant Boulder would be captured by the same gravitity vortex that Jupiter makes a sizable astroid Belt.
I'm sure one day in the future, Earth will be struck again by a giant astroid that will cause mass destruction. In the mean time there is not much technology known... unless the government has something the public doesn't know about yet, that can really help us besides using a nuclear weapon. A deflection shield sounds key if we only had the technology for it.
This was broadcast on the news. A friend told me about it a few days ago. She told me it was larger than a football field but I forgot how many times. It is suppose to 'hit' in 2029. Russia and America are working on it together. Nukes in space anyone? But since the world will end in 2012 ... or is it the aliens landing in 2020 ... or Hell freezing over in ___. I wouldn't worry about it. But your tax money is being spend now because of it. O.o
still, its better than about 95% of the crap govt usually uses our the money they have stolen from us for.
~W~
i remember the hale bop comet and scientist said it will hit the earth next time round.the more humans there are the better their chances of surviving.alot of goverments are building deep underground towns and have been since ww2.
re: Hale Bopp....
from wikipedia:
The estimated probability of impacting Earth in future passages through the inner solar system is remote, about 2.5 x 10^-9 per orbit. Which is to say, not very likely.
It will next return to the inner solar system around the year 4385.
I say, "Let someone else worry about it"
It will be a direct hit so I recommend long term borrowing.
I have reason to believe this started in 1999, at the turn of the Millenia.
No conventional science can stop it.
If Hale Bopp is not due to hit until 4385 then I believe either technology will have developed enough to prevent the planet being struck at all, after all look at the progress mankind has made in the last 250 years since the industrial revolution.
Isnt that so typical of our culture, let someone else worry about it. Bet if that was said yr's ago and we are the culture that had to worry about it we would say why didnt they fix it when they had the chance and not leave it to us. I believe the same thing was said about fixing the pollution, etc....not our problem....seems to me it is our problem in one way or another.
I wosh those scientists the best of luck trying to stop a force of nature.
The stmosphere does burn up most asteriods before they hit, anyways.
It may be a force of nature, but the scientists and political figures love to throw everything completely out of proportion. A plausable scenerio in their view could be the movie "Armageddon".
Even though most meteors do burn up before actually entering stratosphere, this does not mean that an astroid smaller then the moon could not cause significant impact on the magnetic polorization of the gravitational pole of the planets and the Earth. A brief disruption could be seen as a cataclysmatic event.
well it goes to say we as a humans dont have much interest in the future generations the apocalypse is upon us always whether meteors,Mayan calander's ending, or nuclear cataclysm via a world war or those pesky terrorist. But remeber the worst is still out there........The Chain Email......oh the humanity of it alllllllllllll
Well, I heard all of this back in the 80's and it was from CNN and FOX and heard it on every station on TV for a whole week, then it was all silenced, and yes I believe it is real, and according to the 80's info, it will hit earth in 2015- 2018, so enjoy what time we have left, because i think it is all real, 100%. The USA is up to something too, but they are just keeping it secret....
Doc
yes I have heard that also on one of the history channel or something yet, they were discussing how many different sizes of astriods and just things in general in the universe that are always coming close yet most burn up in the planets atmosphere. The one that you are speaking of is as you said not for a long time and it could very well break apart and burn up as well they are not really worried about it.
Yet, when the time comes as was said won't matter we would be dead .
There is a site here in Australia where an Astriod had hit. There is a large crator there yet Australia and the world is still here. I think at times the reports are over rated and just throw a scare into us.
Yes our techknowledge isnt to a degree where it can affect something so hugh however we can make a start and as our techno increases the easier things can be. We already have stuff in space that with some tinkering could defend us from space junk and astriods I am sure.
There always have to be a starting point somewhere
Another theory could suggest that the object in question could have been mistaken for spaceships with extra-terrestrial presence on board.
Hey, could happen. The two often time get confused with the other.
very true, if they looking at things lit yrs away then yeah it could be a spaceship.
We should deff' send our superheroes. I give the points to ~SS~ if it hits it hits why go running for it, pray your deity that you are not left alive when it all ends cause thats when you will experience hell as fabricated by fundamentalist.
It would be hardest those first few yrs. Trying to cope not having all the luxuries we currently have. Like fresh water, shopping centers to buy food etc, power, roads, cars, planes etc.
Very true Doctor, but look at the bright side. If there any humans left which there should be considering how many of us there are, it would be a great opportunity to start over and hopefully learn from our past mistakes such as combustion engines, renewable energy sources instead of oil, gas etc
your right ofcoarse...if we can get internal combustion engines up and running relatively soon, we could pull ourselves out of whatever dark age we ended up in. the internal combustion engine powered our change from steam in the late 1800s to the modern world.
~W~
Not so sure I would want to start all over yet, if anyone that is young enough maybe they will learn from our past mistakes, yet, I do not see that happening either I mean the planet has been around for ever, and well we still have not protected it as we should, just my opinion
Yes, the combustion engine did wonders for making extremely hard jobs easy and it fuelled the industrial revelution which propelled us towards our modern society but it didn't do any good for the planet as a whole from the ecologists point of view.
Hopefully enough people including some enginneers/techinicians and people would know enough to get a basic society going and create technology that would work for us but not mess up the planet....again.
Well considering N.A.S.A only has the funding to observe and detect about 10% of the viewable space its pretty easy to miss a possible threat. I believe the one in question for the near miss in the thread is the one due to miss in 2024 and become a possible direct by 2036. If one happens to hit it does.. Its happened before and will continue even after we are gone.
I happened to see a program on the History Channel the other day on an Asteroid named Apophis. Being an Stargate fan, the name stood out and I decided to watch it.
Although there are reports that the likelihood of an asteroid hitting the Earth is slim, the Russians are have decided to err on the side of caution as they consider Apophis a significant threat to life on Earth despite the low odds of an impact. They are wanting to put together a science-technical council of Russian, European, US and Chinese space experts to try and come up with ways to deal with the situation.
It would be great if they could handle the situation like they did on Stargate SG1 by creating a hyperspace window large enough for the asteroid to pass through.
well I know we have had some hit us yet no damage that really needed reporting. As for the rest I feel NASA has already been aware of them and may be tking action and no one even knows till the time comes.
Alot of them burn up or get knocked off course also, anything is possible and if one that is as big as Texas and cali. then it would react almost like being hit with a Nuke Bomb, but that could happen anytime in my opinion . I mean it is the Universe/Outerspace and well plenty of room to grow or to die out.
As for starting over for the world I also would hope they would not make the same mistakes yet, we do not always do what is best for the planet now do we, sad to say.
Another doomsday thread, yet many speculate this would be the truth behind the destruction of this planet.
One if there was an astriod it would be televised to us, i do not think so, mass hysteria would be rampet and the gov't would not want that to come around. So don't tell scenerio would or possibly come to play.
And if this was fact would we be able to divert such a cosmic destruction, no i do not see how we could. Some would claim some science fiction way to do it, yet if we blast it would shower us with smaller pieces with almost the same force as the big astiod.
Yeah I have to agree, it wouldn't be reported to the general population...It would cause mass hysteria. People wouldn't give a dam because they would have nothing to loose.
The time scale would interest me between the Government knowing and the general population.
Very interesting footage Thoth
Not sure about the shield theory though, I read in a book a long time ago that the ancients were able to harness the power of the moon and use this as a shield...I am unable to remember the title of the book or who wrote it
I totally agree with you cadrewolf, we wouldnt be told for just that reason. Looked what happened with in the pass with just radio station shows like Orson Wells, War of the Worlds. Yes that was yrs and yrs ago, but have we really moved on and can tolerate this sort of situation.
It is believed that it was because of a meteor hitting earth that the dinosaurs died off and bought the ice age. Look wat happened, the earth still lived on I figure the same would happen depending of cause the size of the astroid. Earth has been hit many a time after the ice age and not much damage has been done.
Apart from 65 million years ago though Doctor...there was alot of damage then! lol
Yes true, but the earth is still here. Which is my point. Things can get wiped out but in the end plant earth goes on.
Yes the earth may still live on...us though, I am not so sure...unless we have moved to another planet.

Jan.02, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The news of a giant asteroid hitting the earth has created a sensation among the astronomers and scientists. The discovery has been made by the astronomers working in the biggest observatory of Russia. According to them, the asteroid that may collide with Earth is revolving round the sun in an orbit. However, they feel that the real threat level is difficult to gauge now. They will be able to estimate its power around 2028, when it moves closer to Earth. The scientists feel that when the asteroid will come closer to our planet, its orbit can be changed and this may lead to a collision. If it does happen in 2035, the future of mankind and other forms of life will be at dire risk.
The asteroid, which is said to have the diameter of 1 km, can spell disaster and trigger massive natural calamities like tsunamis and earthquakes. It can also spur significant changes in the climate. In case it hits the Oceans, the consequence will be terrible. The Russian space agency is busy chalking out a plan to save the planet from an impending disaster. The asteroid was spotted for the first time in 2004. Nuclear explosion does not seem to be a viable choice. However, the chances of its colliding with the Earth are deemed to be slim, by some others including NASA.
Taking up such a project means getting approval from other countries and a massive cost. It will take some more years to calculate its chances of collision but an effective asteroid deflection system will go a long way in securing the future of our planet.

Nov 6th of 2009 we were close enough to be hit as is.
Although the asteroid passed within 14,484 kilometres (9,000 miles) of Earth, it measured just (7 metres) 23 ft across and wouldn’t have dented the surface.

if the earth gets hit it gets hit, has in the pass and will in the future. i feel that it just another story that reporters got hold of and making a big deal out of it as they always do.
Bravo my Dr friend the Earth will continue ...
minus this dreadful plague, whatever that maybe...LOL
i do hope am asteroid will hit earth and destroy this hellhole of a society.to me it would be a good thing.not a bad thing.
so your saying that you want to die, and have every man woman and child die with you?
such a wonderful terrorist you would make! i hear al-qaeda is recruiting.
~W~
yeah, why would someone wish a Disaster that would wipe out the civilizations that inhabit it, wow, I have no problem dying myself yet, I do not wish it on any others.
"Yeah I have to agree, it wouldn't be reported to the general population...It would cause mass hysteria. People wouldn't give a dam because they would have nothing to loose."
Theoretically speaking, if something were traveling toward Earth, and was indeed a threat to our planet... It wouldn't be reported without the population first seeing it as a star, then closer as a moon, then closer still as something about to impact. Therefore, the mass hysteria would not be helped.
What would you do if you saw something traveling toward you from space that kept getting closer and closer?
*Chuckles*
Theoretically speaking then.......it would cause mass hysteria from certain peoples
I hardly think that it would 'matter' what my morals or ethics would be if It was proved that all life was to end in a few years, months, days.
the questions are as follows...
when would it come...if it is soon, we may have some real probs...in the future tho, we will be able to stop it.
what is its size? again, small, and we can destroy it
big and we have to redirect it...
very different technologies needed there.
i do wonder how large a hit we could survive...if we tunnel deep into the earth, could we survive a dinosaur killer?
hopefully those that claim that they want to die and have everyone else go as well would volunteer to stay topside for others to live...
but i suspect that they would be first in line whining and begging to be let in.
~W~
We agree that the darkside exists, well most of us...
Some of us are absolutley certain...for reasons I will not go into.
Ergo; If the darkside exists so must the lightside.
Should this Asteroid and the Apocalypse be upon us then it stands to reason then only those who truly deserve to survive will do so.
Unfortunatley I honestly believe not many, if any, do!
well first we gotta survive 2012, remember the world is suppose to end then...
I find it insane that if NASA says it not gonna happen then thats taken for granted. Wouldnt it be great that they wear egg on their face, not ssaying that I want the earth to be hit, it just annoys me that everyone else is wrong and they are right. At least Russia have thought there could be a problem and are taking steps.
NASA would be better suited in spending their funds in a better way the space race is over, the cold war is over now we have to work together to better or save the plant.
Another BIG FAT ZERO for NASA
I have to agree with thedoctor, in all the movies about astriods hitting earth it isnt just NASA coming to the rescue it is the world. No country can really afford to go it alone.
And isnt it funny how 2012 was the main news about earth being destroyed and now it is about an astroid way in the future.
to the media 2012 is old news now everybody has come to terms about it in their own way so now they need something else.
Karmageddon (n): its like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
From the Washington Post contest where you take a word and substitute a letter to give it like a new definition.
My guess is that 2012 is when the Apocaylpse will happen.
In Ancient Hebrew it just means "revealing the truth"...
probably about other planes of existance and that the normal religions are a load of pooh and of course that some lil deamonic vamps do exist....coughs politely.
I,m guessing that will lead to social break-up and all the stuff in "Kali Yuga" and then the big one in 2029.
Can,t wait...yippee! LOL.
NASA is already and has been studying information about impacts with comets. Look up Mission Deep Impact.
This is where they are talking about it initially and you can look for results from this page.
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/deepimpact/mission/index.html
As far as asteroids, they are watching them but from what I have read in the past is that they cannot watch them all, they are too numerous. I read an article and I think it was about NASA and asteroids and it said that trying to blow them up as in movies wouldn't work. They were working with some sort of way to impel them to move in a different direction. I don't remember the details.
You are right NASA and Co are looking at rockets with space Nets, lasers, probes with explosives etc.
The sensible way forward is to try and deflect the object- if one has enough time.
Unfortunately our technology is not advanced enough.
Fortunately this Earth is also home to entities from the otherside who are not bound by the normal laws of physics... so we had better be nice to them !
Like err...pretty please.
LOL.
I recall hearing of this incident, the dooms day rock that will be coming threw our solar system and yes coming very close to the Earth. They say the asteroid is approximately the size of Texas and if it did hit the earth it would hit with such devastation the sky would be blackened and the oceans boiled. Basically a massive nuclear explosion, a dooms day. They tracked this asteroid for many years, and yes it will miss the earth, but it was a wake up call that we do need to focus more on the ideal of stopping such a thing. The new NASA shuttle that has been in testing recently is capable of incredible speeds. Basically if you remember the movie Armageddon, this is the ideal they were thinking about, but also the ideal of mining asteroids for the precious resources within them. The ideal of blasting an asteroid yes may cause smaller rocks to continue towards the earth. However if it was targeted far enough out, it would give plenty of time for each projectile to be blasted until it was no longer capable of piercing the atmosphere. In order to change an asteroids course in space you would not want to directly target it, rather place the blast within its path that the impact would simply push it off course. A small change in course at a distance would add huge change to trajectory of distance. I would be more worried that with current technology we are able to watch about 10% of the surrounding space at this time. That means the other 90% may contain some items needing our attention. The world would do what it needed to try and survive, but there are no guaranties of the outcome.
what new nasa shuttle is that? and amazing speeds? its limited to the same forces that any chemical propellant are limited by, and its speed is dependent on how much fuel it can carry....
oh...the shuttles are made for low earth orbit. the movie armageddon was fun, but science fantasy none the less.
they dont orbit the moon, and it takes about 3 days to get to the moon in the first place (thats at 25,000 mph, which is escape velocity). it took a 360 ft tall rocket loaded down with fuel to send the apollo spacecraft to the moon and back. no way in our current tech that a shuttle can get there.
if you care to send me a url to correct me, i will be thrilled to read it!
~W~
I heard that NASA's funding has been cut back so can they really afford to be doing all this. I totally agree that there are way to many astriods out there to be detected there are bound to be a lot that gets missed.
I believe it is a high possibilty, as the polar cap shifts slowly and the alignment beings to head towards the great rift which is proclaimed to happen in 2012, asteriod belts could be forced be the earths gravitational pull and we could face a serious astriod and meteor storm, not shower, but actual storm.
Scientist do believe it is why we are seeing an increase of super storms and earthquakes.
You only have to watch TV to see this. They are always on TV trying to explain why we are getting wild and wilder weather.
I think a world united defence against asteriods would be good, but then there is the potential to use it against each other as well. Which is why I don't think one has been created.
I do recall watching a program when Haley's comet was seen in our skies that at some point in the future it will collide with earth so maybe future generations will need to work something out for that, I won't be here.
As for the governments I think they won't tell anyone until the last possible moment because alas most human beings are sheep they will panic there will be chaos, looting, mass suicides (although that isn't a bad thing I guess), mayhem and destruction all round.
I won't panic I will just gather my family around me and just be with them one more time. Get drunk, get naked and make love :D Or maybe run down the main street stark naked just for the fun of it. Either way I will be enjoying my last moments not panicing and stealing tv's like you see in the dumb movies! I would be happy to go out on a high note like that lmao.
I agree,
Making love under the meteor storm is probably far more effective than shooting very slow little fireworks!
lets see...
first the space race isnt over...china is trying to put people on the moon. i still think its advantageous to have the tech lead, and the space program has brought us just about more tech than anything ever before achieved in peacetime.
the down side ofcoarse is that its a govt program, and the govt cant do anything really well, and will always have a great deal of waste and corruption.
as for crazy weather...i think you need to look at old news papers. i study alot of history and we have had alot of crazy weather.
i think the hottest year in the last hundred was in the early 30s, and there was a great deal of very cold weather around the early 40s. scientists seem somewhat split just now since many seem to think we are headed to a new iceage, while some insist on hanging on to the global warming idea (even tho that has been pretty much shot down).
personally id prefer warming to cooling, but one thing that studies of ice cores indicates is that the earth has always heated and cooled. heating causes extra growing seasons....cooling causes famine.
well...just something for your consideration.
~W~
I have seen asteroids hit the earth in so many dreams, that I feel it will happen, I hope what ever they are planning will work for us in the future.
There is no known asteroid that has a chance to hit the earth.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torino_scale
This doesn't mean that we won't discover others that have more of a chance of hitting us, however.
Is humorous how people think we are so behind on space exploration or how they all expect NASA to actually retrieve full analysis, findings and missions to the general public. We get amazing images from the Sun's: behavior, patterns and morphological intel which is a celestial body far far away from here; than we get from the moon right next to us, all blurry and in greyscale (I dare to say that we get better "scale" images of galaxies and nebulas than we even get from our neighboring cosmic bodies); And please don't pull the lack of interest wild card on me here, the moon is packed with H3 by the S%@Tload (thats like an Oasis in the middle of the Sahara desert) for this energy crisis and resource based world economy; It doesn't take much effort for few actual images of the moon in colors and yet people think is just what NASA says . And is impressive how we get people to outer space- more or less like we did "freaking" 50 years ago. I mean we didn't even had efficient outer communication lines back then and is incredible how we managed to evolve on phones that can even "whipe your @$$" with internet on it, yet we haven't upgraded that much our ways to travel in/outer space with the millions invested on "highest"exploration equipment. C'mon people step aside the idiot box for a while...They are giving you like 3 bad pictures of sterile alien landscape per mission and a videos that looks like one close-up picture zooming it by % degrees; like that last "bombing for water BS"mission on the moon, they are just letting you know now that there is water in the moon and possibilities of other things along the way, the next question goes for life, and they will absolutely tell you about micro-scale life-forms for a change.
I guess someone is "doing" a better job at pointing the interest points:
http://www.marsruins.com/MarsRiverCity/MarsRiverCity.htm
http://www.esa.int/esaMI/Mars_Express/
http://www.urania.be/sterrenkunde/images/mars-groot.jpg
As for a better correlation to the subject, they already know what is heading and what is not, Don't think we are primitive on that side-note. They have given all those channel that love doomsday program an array of possibilities to kill earth with outer space threats and it wasn't by just researching images and interpretations of visual data, they master the physics behind this scenarios by testing and experimenting with variables in order to scare you later with 1:~ possibility of occurrence of X event, they cannot tell you something untested, so in order to talk to you about antimatter, gamma rays/burst, Solar storms/flares, black-holes, impacts of asteroids/other bodies collision, etc.. They cannot speculate and release, thats not a scientist posture obviously they had to create mini lab models to corroborate the veracity of their studies/theories. At this heights you have to have supporting facts and tested observations for theories to take grounds in science or it will just be speculative data and not proper science. So in correlation with my last post it seams that this whole thread goes down the line where they think we don't know nothing about the universe but what is placed on those high school Earth science and Astronomy textbooks along with the limited things governmental programs/space agencies retrieve.
Example of suppressed knowledge of Astro/physics:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nP4zQ4R8vJg&feature=related
I believe an asteroid is very capable of hitting earth.
i don't know what to think about an asteroid hitting the earth that will be big enough for the earths destruction but i'm usually wrong about these things who knows
Well alot and anything can and may happen it is the old *what if* theory, I myself do not think that we in Our Lifetime will see any collision with another planet or Asteroids that will destroy us yet, on the other hand as I sayid anything can and may happen. we willnot ever know for sure until it is actually on an approach with direct hit.
We have many many ones that are always headed toward us yet they tend to burn up in the atmosphere or break apart into smaller ones which do not cause a drastic action upon impact. at least as far as I know from what I have read.
Doomsday, astriods hitting the Earth, a Black hole taking earth and crushing it. scare tatics of fire side stories to amuse and scare the kids. Who is sto say what will be Earths demise.
I have read and watched so many articles and shows in regards to the end of the world and yes one day the world will end on day in our distant future. I hold NASA as the soul authority on this subject and I frequent their website daily. the astroid your referring to was believed to be planet x but in fact was discovered to have been a planet many thousnads of light years away that appeared at first to be an astroid and no its not on a collision course with earth. If an astroid of this type were spotted NASA would verify it and they claim there is no such impending threat. Mankind has often entertained the thought of such scenerios and tried to come up with solutions for the preservation of the human race, nothing wrong with planning ahead just incase right? My advice is go to NASA if you really wanna know.
I have to say this. It's snowing here. There are people cold and hungry and in shelters. There are people living in cars or sleeping in shacks.
I have to say..one day at a time people. Do some good today.
I'm less concerned about asteroids today than I am the couple down the street who has to decide between having heat and feeding their children.
There is a tragedy.
Create a type of high-intensity laser that can either destroy the asteroid or deflect it off its path with earth. If both fail, then go to Mars!
Wish it was that easy, science in all its wisdom could not even produce that of right now. then the concern would be bits that broke off still coming to earth.
true no human scientist will be able to build something like that yet
plan b-colonize other planets
logical plan yet we would have to substain life aat the other world or find a planet like earth, to survive,
actually there is a nasa plan (that is not being carried out) which would allow mars to be habitable to humans without space suits in about a century.
we already have the tech, we just dont have the resolve, the money, or the vision just now.
ill end that line as it starts to encroach on politics, and there are those in both political parties that have zero vision.
~W~
Yet if it has no been promoted than if the senerio says plays out in a couple of years the planets will not be able to sustane life, yet on the grand scale of all humanity on ships to these planets NASA could not engineer enough supplies to take care of all.
humans wouldnt go first actually.
we first seed mars with bluegreen algae. then we send several probes to the martian ice caps with graphite dust...darkening the coldest parts of the planet. (this was the plan back in the 70s when we were concerned about global cooling btw). this raises the temp of the planet a bit, and the blue green algae start to eat CO2 and exhale oxygen. the airpressure would increase over time, and the oxygen level would also go up.
we could also plant devices around the planet that produce CO2 in order to slowly raise the temp.
as i said before, the process takes about a century. at that point, we take seeds. we make hydo gardens, put all the waste into the dirt there, slowly creating fertile soil. in time we could even plant crops there.
its a dream, but doable...and perhaps even profitable in time.

thats if we have the time, many ideas of these nature growths to change planets yet, takes more than algaae to become life for a planet. good post
thank you...
i didnt say we would have time if we discovered a rock headed this way, but it would be a good insurance policy for the survival of the human race were such an event occur. also there might be huge profits in it for any corporation that was willing to make such a long term investment.

I am sure that soon that we will venture out to establish life on other planets. Some say that Earth has been hit before by an astriod which probaly destroyed most of the life here , yet life always finds a way to survive and re-establish itself in history.

Well there is always some sort of threat some where in the world with all the natural disasters and smaller countries being flooded by tsunomies (sp) I mean seriously if an asteroid is going to crash into us, its not like we are going to do much about it. so live for today and enjoy what you have life is to short.
