Does anyone think that teen action shows, like Buffy, are destroying the genre of vampirism in popular media or is it the saviour of it.
these shows make the genre more popular and so allow people to view vampiric information and open their minds.
however these shows often dumb-down and trivialise the vampiric and magical genres and spread disinformation.
what are your opinions my frends?
Well, I think personally that it dumbs it down ,as you said, too much. These shows don't have much truth.
They're destroying it.
But movies, series etc...aren't there to give information, they are there to make money.
If they didn't make it that way, they wouldn't be liked by the poeple and therefore they wouldn't make money.
Cause that's the unique thing that interests the creator of them, the money, nothing more. They don't give a bleep about the real vampiric scene, most of them wouldn't even know it exists.
But this is in everything, wethear it's vampires, witchcraft etc....We shouldn't get upset for such thing, after all Television is a lier.
Television, movies, and other fictional media are only detrimental to those who are unable to seperate fiction from reality. Which I do not believe the media can be blamed for, but only the person.
i don't think all tv and movies are liars and only there for money and profit.
wot of Micheal Moore?
the producers do it for the money but he does it mainly for the truth.
even if he were in it for money the message he spreads does do a lot of good.
although i have yet to find an example like michael moore in the vampiric genre
i think they're destroying it. yes, more and more people are becoming interested in vampirism, but for the wrong reasons. TV shows romantisize vampires and make them seem evil and entrancing. So different from real people even though they're not.
I would like to destroy ALL THE MEDIA in general. It's really the principal cause for our actual social degeneration. Our brain is constantly manipulated by the media. A lot of the wrong information and our mental horror comes from what we see in the media. Overall, channels like FOX or E.
Surely not all.
But nayway like TD said it's all abpout the person.
The person gets brainwashed only if he or she decides to.
At the same moment we can't order people on what and not believe.
Darkthrone,
i think you mean popular mass media.
as you are on here i doubt you want to destroy the net to (it is a part of the media you know).

I think they are feeding my imaginative side which I know is NOT real. They never claimed to be real, they are out there as purely fictional entertainment. I write my own versions of fictional vampires. Writers will write rather they make money or not- its involuntary when that's what you do- write. And fantasical subjects are always big sellers.
Its never bothered me to enjoy something that is popular. Comforming or non-comforming never comes into play with me- I like what I like simply on personal appeal- I don't give a crap what others think.
Most people, people with any connection to reality know that the movies are all cool creations of a writer, and in their minds- they can be whatever they want them to be.

Exactly I watch a lot of movies and tv and used to read a lot of fiction but I decided to not to be brainwashed.
I just watch or read for fun,if I want knowledge I seek soemthing else.
However not everyone is able to make a distinction between reality and fiction.
I would say it is hard to say. You can't generalize such a matter. There is bound to be some good shows and movies along with the bad.... so yeah o-o I would think it would be like anything else.

That's where the problem comes in- when people assume these fictional movies and books are giving their reality a bad name- they were not meant to be real. You can't be wrong when your whole purpose was to be entertaining fakeness :)
the problem is that many people simply beleive the fiction to be true.
for example:
Charles Manson was convicted of conspiracy to commit murder.
he wasn't put in jail for murder and was never acused of murder.
but any1 who has never bothered to look into who he is simply believes him to be a murderer cos the media says he is.
well bring on the flaming but the micheal moore thing... he is not intrested in putting out the truth but his opinion.... I hate bush btw but some of the facts on the 911 thing were complete bullshit there for he is just putting out what he thinks notice it was not listed as a documentary but a documentary style cause if it actually was he would have to produce proof of his facts
it is a heated debate that ragages in many places.
michael moores influennce: is it enough truth to do gud or is it too much disinformation that does bad?
if you wish to discuss that i suggest the sandbox.
moore was only an example, not a topic unto itself.
please return to the topic of the thread.
To have such shows expands the minds of many people. Makes it a little easier to accept it when their friends come out of the coffin (or when they themselves do). But these shows are but a peek into another world. Obviously, a lot is missed, not seen, or altered (dumbed down). But to destroy them completely? Down with the media? Perhaps we should go back to the Dark Ages as well . . .
TV and Movies are make believe, anyone with a brain knows that,if you have intelligence and a sound mind, little things like that shouldn't bother you.
I didn't think of that, you guys are right. It's an entertainment thing.

Conspiracy theorists would say..
There is a little bit of truth in what they put out there (in the shows), to slowly prepare the humand mind for the day we take over.

Mr. Nigthman- I don't think it was even the tiniest thought in their head, making fiction to disprove human vampires. If you only knew how much society doesn't give a care either way, you'd know that.
They make the movies because they are cool shows to watch. People enjoy them. People like fiction.
No writer or producer sets out to show the world human vampires are fake- they don't care.
I find it so interesting how so many people on this website put down movies and TV shows- then I look at the majority of those profile and find the fictional vampire gifs/jpgs images. why have those on your profile if that kind of thing only promotes the fictional vampire beliefs you hate?
usally, movies or shows starring ''vampires'' are just in it for the money...
Im sure there is somthing out there that tells the truth though
As to the question I would answer neither. I watch and like media presentations on the subjects for entertainment and hot people in leather doing cool things like leaping off buildings and blowing things up, all the while managing to stay hot looking. As to serious subject matter, I think for myself.
Seems a double-edged sword to me.
While it is all fine and dandy to dumb-down a concept for the general public, it also creates a bad image for true vampiric culturalists.
But just so long as people can discern between the low-substance stuff and the true meaningful stuff, I think it's fine to have shows like that.
i dont believe shows and movies give any correct info..if any, it gives out the wrong impression about vampyres and their way of life.
its a downfall to be sure because too many people are using it as a fad when in reality its a way of life some do not want
i think its a half and half, i wouldnt say the shows them selfs are breaking down the genre, but it's more of the populaty these shows produce that is doing the said damage. but aslast this is what occurs when ever you bring any genre to the mainstream media.
People have a thirst for entertainment, the 'unknown' has always held a fascination, be it spiritual, magikal or plain horror.
The onus is on the one who watches to decide to believe what they are being fed is the whole truth or to take on the interest to explore the factual side of what they are watching.
One only has to read some of the threads here to see how some believe whole heartedly that 1000 year old vamps sleep in their coffins and wander the streets at night taking virgins from every corner ~ some even claim proof of this but have yet to post such proof, but such is life.
There are those who have a thirst for knowledge and will seek as much as they can, then others who are content to have their thoughts filled for them.

'There are those who have a thirst for knowledge and will seek as much as they can, then others who are content to have their thoughts filled for them.'
Well, my life is based on learning as much as I can and not wasting a single day. But there is nothing wrong with loving fiction- its not that I can't fill my own brain, not at all.
I like vampire fiction just like I like Marvel and DC comics. This kind of thread goes on here all the time, and I always give the same answers. The day my fiction is taken away from me I want a bullet to my brain~ I would never want to live in a world where my imagination was not fed. I am fed in different ways- I like books, I like movies. There is nothing wrong with liking Batman and Superman, there is nothing wrong with liking Anne Rice ;)
And I use my brain every single day seeking true knowledge- things that may not appeal to anyone else. If I am not personally interested in being a vampire- that won't be my knowledge seeking purpose in life, although I know more about it than some of these proclaimed vampires here.
I am offended by that comment, but I would hope it was not intended to do so- this member's posts have always been enlightening in the past. Re-reading it, I believe that comment may be meant for those who actually believe in the movies as their truth- which is not me. I always seperate fact from fiction.
well it looks like its about a 50 /50 thing when it comes to this question
yes it dumbs it
yes it uplifts it
yes yes t could be the down fall
yes it could be the saviour
basicaly ther is no one answer to your question
well maybe there is its
Yes

"There are those who have a thirst for knowledge and will seek as much as they can, then others who are content to have their thoughts filled for them. "
In no way was this intended to insult those who use their imagination or love the fiction aspect of anything... I adore some of the Vamp films and books, love sci fi and have a more than satisfactory imagination.
What I meant and obviously put very badly is that there are some who will view something and take is as gospel, whether it be one film one newspaper article one piece of fictional writing. If they are content with that they are entitled to that perogative, but by some of the comments we get in the threads here it obviously also dumbs down, which is what the question in the thread relates to.
If someone truly believes something they have either researched or had personal experience of fair enough, but I do not wish someone to have a view on me as a vampyric based solely on Buffy
It does. I mean it doesnt give a correct view of the Vampiric world. It shows mainly what people already believe happens which is more than likely because the creators are afraid of what an audience would think if they showed the real thing. Plus they must write for an audience and in order to gain that audience, the material of the show must have an appeal that is not too risque and not too dull...
sorry if i didnt explain anything but its my odd way of sayin i have no freekin clue
First of all, I think that Buffy the Vampire Slayer is the dumbest show around. It was obviously created as a joke that took off. I mean come on a "blonde cheerleader" who slays vampire?!
Second I don't think it will be a saviour to vampires. I think it makes vampires look like a joke. Ooooh vampires are so powerful that a silly blonde cheerleader can kick their ass! If you analyse that show the whole thing is one big laugh! What I do think it will do and has done is now created a group of "slayers" who are out to get people like us. The whole thing is rather silly.
Well though it does open the door to the possiblility of the lifestyle it is based purly on the myths of vampirism. Buffy, Angel...dramatized shows nothing more. Those who take the charaters and idolize them using them as a reference base are being misled totally and completely. Then, they get out here were people live the REAL lifestyle and are confused and dissmayed. The movies and show have inklings of truths in them. But, are mostly romaticised versions of the writers interpretation of vampirism.

got ya nastya ;)
What I wish- is that there were 2 different names vampires, and something else~ because they are so different. One name for the fictional beings, another for the reality.
Personally I believe that it ruins the reputation. That shows dumbs-down vampires and magical entitys in general, makes us appear evil and sometimes even incredibly stupid.
*grins at Imagesinwords*
Glad you understood me lol I hate insulting anyone when it isn't intentional lol ;)
And yeh, different names or something to differentiate would help in some ways, but i think we will always have the problem of fiction being so much enticing than fact that the misconeptions will continue.
have to say though I wouldn't mind meeting Spike on a dark night lol
I have severe issue with the fact that so many people seem to think that movies like Blade are the truth about the vampire culture. Were vampires to actually exist, I'd like to think they wouldn't be stupid enough to be so public about it. And the people who treat Anne Rice books like the Bible of vampiric lifestyle just irritate me. Mind you, I don't think that these glorified images portray true vampirism at all, but that's because I don't believe that vampires are all-powerful immortal beings. But that's a whole other rant.

it all boils down to some folks not being able to separate fact from fiction.
*And yes, Spike in a dark alley sounds like something good to sleep on tonight ;)
I think that they a dumb shows and need to be based on facts instead of fiction. they only bring the vampire community down.
Ignorance destroys all..and television caters to the ignorant (at least newtorks..ABC, CBS, NBC et al)
It is dumbed down to be purely entertainment and to raise ratings. It is not so much a downfall as it is showing others that all magick, lore, etc. is simply fluff and nothing more-- or even satanic in some manner.
I feel it's more of a 'save them' situation, as many are christian that fabricate these shows-- but then again, I was for the most part raised around bigots of this nature.
I won't be saved. I'll rise as the individual.
In the end what sells, goes! I believe that Buffy, made a lot of jokes about the whole genre!
The History Channel rocks on Halloween. I have two kids that I take trick or treating and then we watch the history while sorting out the candy. Short language, I don't party on Halloween. Anyway, it has all sorts of cool stuff about how Vampires are thought to come about, and warewolves and muumys. I look forward to it. Maybe you can tivo or tape while your out and having all the fun.
It depends on the show, some do destroy and others makes it look appeling so I guess it all depends on witch on you see
Buffy was simply some good escapism. How could one not like Buffy?
They have little truth to them, I suppose the shows are alright, I'd like to bite Sarah Michelle Gellar!
To this I say, relax, people like to be entertained.
This show in particular was not meant to be taken seriously, only to be another way to entertain us on T.V.
If there were however a documentary that spent it's time running down the vampire etc, that to me would be more offensive than a show that is searching for ratings and $$$$$.
If they make money from the vampire, good on them, if their purpose is to destroy it, that is the time to get defensive, until then, realise that somewhere along the line someone thought vampires were pretty damm cool and thought, how can we get a vampire out into the public?
the show "charmed" kind of made me mad at first, thinking, that's so not how it happens. when i tell me that i'm a witch, some moron inevitably says "show me right now, make something appear out of thin air." but in the end, it's all fun, makes me wish it really worked that way *lol*
All the movies and TV shows I have come across are strictly for entertainment. When I want actual facts or opinions I go to books and the internet. I know that when I see a movie for the first time and they use some history or object in it I go searching for these things to see if they actually have any base. I think to some one from the outside it creates an interest to want to learn more. The people that can seperate reality and fiction quickly realise these things and usually become even more imersed in this world because it's actually something original not something thrown in the face day to day. The problem begins when you can't seperate reality and fiction.
