I'm am curious to hear what people's own personal views of how vampirism or vampiric lore started. Do you believe that vampirism, in the aspect of full blood dependancy, really exists?
Now, I realise this subject may cause contraversy, so I'd like to place some ground rules:
~NO insulting
~No saying someone else is wrong; no one CAN be wrong since it is a speculation at this point and they are voicing their opinions
~Don't be afraid to say what you believe! I'm interested in knowing what you have come up with as far as your own beliefs on the subject go.
~Keep an open mind - maybe someone will say something you've never thought of.
Let the debate begin!
Come on everyone! I'm thirsty for some knowledge.
Most of what I know I've seen in movies or read in fictional stories. I want to hear what some of you know.
Great idea Darkling!
This will be interesting and helpful, seeing as i'm doing a report on this as well lol
I heard some stuff from people that told me they were vamps a couple years ago.
Sanguine Vampires need blood. Have to feed weekly. Can also feed psychically until they get blood.
Psychic Vampires primarily feed off energy, but can feed off blood well.
That's all I really know.
Yes as I look around me I do believe it really exists lol.
lol.
I beleive it does exsist, but both types of vampires can live off of either blood or energy.
Is there anyone out there who believes these are all just fairy tales and folklore? What do you believe? I'm sure you have formed some of your own beliefs based on the ideas you've read or seen - share away!!!
Here's food for thought:
What if all of these stories simply started with one father, over protective of his daughter, wanted to scare her into preserving herself? Perhaps he found a hickey or bitemark on her neck from a lover, and spun a tale to break them apart.
Any other ideas on where this could have started?
I agree with MisfitChick423... I'm not a psi vamp by classification, because of lack of energy feeding to a degree, but definitely sang.... While I may not "have to feed", or be totally dependent on blood, the cravings are very uncomfortable once they start so it would be wise to satisfy them. I do believe that total dependency is possible but will be very rare.
I was with a Vampire for a while, and he managed to go from being a sang vampire to a psi vampire. Do you think this is possible?
Darkling, that is a very good question. You never know. But then again, you have to look back in history and all that.
ahh, but then the question becomes who was history written by? can we count on what we read, or is some of it really just faith?
We are full of good questions to get the brain going.
Accounts had to have been written to have the history. I think that some of it has to do with faith.
THE ORIGINS OF VAMPIRES:
The belief in the survival of the soul or spirit beyond physical death has been a fundamental aspect of humanity for at least the last hundred thousand years. This evinced, I believe, the the treatment afforded to the dead since prehistory. Even the seemingly simple act of burying or cremating the dead is ritualistic. It is no mean feat to dig a pit large enough to accept a body; and burning a fully grown adult to anything resembling ash involves significant resources and effort and material. It is far easier to simply leave a body to decompose.
But if this is not enough to convince us that the soul’s journey into the afterlife has always been a paramount of importance, then consider the many diverse rites that accompany death.
Our Neanderthal ancestors went to the trouble of burying their dead, but also ensured that the bodies were tied with the knees against the chest. Was this to mirror the foetal position and thus herald reincarnation? Or was it to prevent the physical body from reanimatind after death.
Nowhere was the preperation and care of the dead taken more seriously than in Ancient Egypt. Inscriptions dating back four thousand years, found on the pyramid walls at Sakkara, detail the spells and rituals neccessary to transport the dead to the “other side”. It was believed thats the health of the departed soul depended on the well-being of the physical body. This led to the introduction of mummification to help protect the body from dissolution. Riches, food and furniture commensurate with the regal status of the Pharaoh were buried alongside the body, as was the Pert Em Hru (Book Of The Dead) - a guide book to aid the soul’s passage into the afterlife. Failure to abide by theses rules was believed to have terrible consequences for both the deceased and their surviving families: namely Vampirism, or the return of the body from the dead.
My opinion.
what i have learned in the medical field, from how our bodies work and the like, that it isnt possible to live off blood alone...our blood doesnt not carry the necessary nutrients we need to survive...if that was the case, we wouldnt need to eat or drink....
but some do need the small amounts to satisfy what they bosy is not able to produce..and its in small amounts..not heeping bucketfuls...because thats not possible ..
I've tried to switch from sang to psi but with no luck whatsoever!!! Even as far as hypnotism... But as far as the history of vamps psi and sang, I read somewhere that it started in the spirit realm... It gets deep.
I'd like to take a look at that if that's alright with you.
interesting debate. xtroublex has a very similar opinion to mine. i think that since humanity exist death was something that frightened and that made us think of. but the roots of vampirism are different from culture to culture. the interesting thing is that almost every culture believes in vampirism.
that is the point at analyzing it. why do all cultures believe in vampires. the dacan people believed in the strigoi who are still feared some parts of romania. the old babylonians believed in vampires, the indians and the chinese do to. the old azteke people believed in chupakabra who drank most times the blood of the cattle but from humans too. a lot of african tribes believe in vampires... and some people even say that eva was the second wife of adam and good had created one before her.. its written in an jewish book, but i dont know in which one.
why do all these people believe in vampires. why do they fear those who are awakened from death? there must be a reason. there must be something true about it. i am searching on it and i will found out.
just to tell my opinion about most ppl in here. i didnt see a vampire like most of you claim to be. no one in here will die if he or she doesnt drink blood. every one in here has a human metabolism and denying it is lying to yourself.
genuineblood has made some good points and I'm with him all the way on this one.
I think it dates back even further than early burial customs....back to the hunter gatherer days, before man figured out fire
simply put...if you cannot find meat....where do you get your substitutes...many hunter societies even today will use blood drinking as temporary sustenance, cutting ad drinking of themself or others in small amounts just to keep energy up while on the hunt
I think the fear of vampires comes from some peoples starting to like the blood too much....the cutting and pain...and so others started to shy away from them....leading to rumors and inuendos, which in turn lead to legends of blood drinking killers.
I know some make the claims that they cnnot go without feeding....I have met a few like this....and when forced to test this inability to survive without....well suffice it to say all of them are still alive....
proving their falseness...
I think that feeding may enhance things somewhat....but don't beieve in a necessity in it...till someone shows me otherwise
I totally agree with Genuinblood on this one. Many good points I would not have thought of myself.
I know that a lot of cultures beleive in vampires, and drink blood. This tribe in Africa bleeds cattle just enough and keep it alive and then drink the blood with milk added.
The first written references to what could be considered vampires was back in the ancient near east folklore, (along the Tigris/Euphraties -sp- Rivers) long before the Egyptians were building pyramids (when the ziggurat was the prevelent method of building), at least that was as early as I myself could find. It is amazing how many of their myths were rewritten by later cultures--including the Flood story, and how little credit these great, early civilizations were given. Ever so interesting!
i have attended some seminars about vamos at our local college...learned absolutely nothing useful....
i did learn that some people were called vampires in the midevil times due to the fact that during the wars some soldiers were seperated from the group with no food and very little water, and no way to get any of this since they were lost. soldiers would drink small amounts of blood from their horses till real sustanence could be found.
there was another story i read about some indian warriors that had gotten lost and one of their commrades had passed away from lack of drink and food, they drank his blood ate converted to cannibalism so as to survive.
so vampirism has worked its way trough history....Vlad The Impaler was one of the most well known in his time....and elizabeth bathory, the most well known from hers.....
Hmmm....this thread proved to be more thought provoking than I had originally anticipated. I hope everyone else feels the same way. Does anyone else know of any lesser known theories? Have you created any theories of your own?
the tribe in africa is called massai. and about that thing in the early ages. that is not been proved. the thought of drinking blood from others during hunt is very paradox and not proved yet. a lot of aspects have to be focused on.
making each other bleed means hurting them a spot of the body will be injured (only slightly though) so this spot will be a weak point and more likely to be the cause of more serious injuries during the hunt.
the other side is that the cut the loss of blood and the drinking will lead to a increased production of adrenalin. that means that pain will not be felt that much that the body is able to suffer more and to increase its powers as more resources of the body are set free.
the theory doesnt talk about individuals, but about tribes who started to enjoy the blooddrinking to much. the tribes that time consisted of mostly man and only a few women. the roots of cannibalism are explained in some theories like that.
but like i said things arent proved 100%
I know that psy vamps exist, but that's just someone that's learned enough about energy manipulation to mess around a bit and doesn't have moral qualms about doing so.
Sanguines, exist, but they are just humans who like a spoonful of blood now and then, whether their need is truly physical or psychosomatic, I don't know - I imagine it varies from person to person.
Now, if the vampires of legend truly exist, or ever did, I don't know. To be honest, I don't think it matters too much. If traditional vampires do not exist, I will go to school, get my degrees, my jobs, and live my life. If they do, I suspect that my life will go the exact same way. So, until I meet one who makes a point of interfering in my life, I'm can't be overly bothered on the subject.
No idea how it all started, but I am loving reading the debate as it unfolds. Am bumping this up in the forum listings as well to see what other people can come up with on this subject.
thx silverbow
as to dependency....we know there are a few different diseases which cause vampire like sympoms....but heres a thought...are they all diseases.....or were some of them failed strains of evolution perhaps?...different branches that are still close enough to be human...but different enough to have different advantages and vulnerabilities....say for example...
a light sensitivity causing better night vision, faster healing, enhanced strength.....they know now what protein it is that slows muscle growth.....there is one family in germany with a 12 yr old boy who has a full grown adult athletes muscle mass....in tests this protein is only partially functional...they rate that the top end of his strength could be well past current record holders....but strength like this would be likely to cause the person more injuries as well.....hence the body healing faster in response.......just a theory
hmm my own theory is a bit vague as there are no real prove about it in early ages, but i am sure that this type of actions were common during war.
once i thought that warriors drank the blood of their enemies after they killed them. they might have eaten their hearts too as its said that the heart and the blood contain the strenght of a man. it might become a tradition in some warrior tribes and whenever they attacted some other weaker tribes they drank their blood. this migh have caused the fear of the blood drinkers. that would be a good start for a myth for the believ in vampires.
if some of you want to know the roots of the belief of vampires in some certain regions of the world i can tell you. i can tell you about the old roman, the eastern europian (where dracula comes from), and the south american roots of the belief in vampirism, but it would be too long to write it down here. so if you are interested just write me a message.
About the romanian origin of the vampires, I already posted some threads and posts, so you can find more information there or you can simply ask me.
Blood dependancy...sure! It exists! No later than last week I had a pacient who was suffering from narrow supression and who needed blood substitution periodically for him to maintain a satisfactory life...The sunny part was that he developped an obsession about how much blood he needed and that he needed a minimum amount of blood which he calculated, and no matter what the blood results were, if he counted one blood pack less than he wanted, he said he wasn`t well!
So...there is blood dependancy...not only physical but mental also!
I think the vampire lore, or the history of vampires started the same as most of the rest of history. From stories told generation by generation.
As for the dependency on the blood/energy, I completely believe in it.
If you wish to go to origins, you might have to look at the origin of man alongside it. After all, one is dependant upon the other.
If this is the case, you would have to assume that they evolved in the same places that man did, which would be the Equatorial regions, South East Asia, Central America or Central Africa.
Some anthropologists are now saying that civilisation may have begun in the Congo, during the last great Ice Age (more 12,000 years ago). Not only that, but they had pottery crafts which were finer than that of iron and bronze age periods which came later.
This means that there ought to be evidence of arable subsistence and settlement activity in the Jungles, undisturbed for millenia and this lends evidence towards the theories of cycles in civilisation.
Vampyres, by their assumed nature, would have to be subject to the same ebb and flow of history as is man.
My personal view of how vampirism or vampiric lore started is there was a mutation long before human (homo erectus) was on earth. it might have been like flies placing their eggs onto a cow. Those Maggots live from the cows BLOOD.
etc...
There might have been an ape or whatever Darvin said about evoluiton who was living from the foes blood keeping them alive.
or there was CAIN everyone knows. or Lillith the mother of all.
I believe that vampirism, in the aspect of full blood dependancy, really exists.
Im not really sure but its all really cool to here and find out what others know.
In terms of full-blood dependency I do not believe anyone has that inherent need based on human anatomy and physiology 101...
you can go a month without food, but only 3 days without water...
someone who PERCEIVES themselves to be blood dependent would most likely exhibit symptoms similar to dehydration such as dry mouth, lethargy and malaise...
from what i think all things are based in fact so the stories of vampires where did they originate anyone have a clue. besides what is in the movies.
As far as where they orginated, that could be a whole nother debate. Everyone has their theories.
You could spend your whole life in a library researching the history of vampires. They have been around since demons first crawled on this earth. You would have to ask where a lot of the other mythological monsters came from. I do like this debate. It's very da Vinci code like.
First and foremost, I am a vampire (psy/sang). Secondly, my theories are just that- theories and intelligible ponderings.
Now, our origins are very hard to decipher exactly where we originated from. Below are some of my ideas
A) We are some how related to Cain (I know I know, how V:TM, but Cain was cast out by God in similiar manner that Lucifer was) In the epic folk poem, Beowulf, when it speaks of Grendel's origins, it makes a reference of how he (Grendel) was related to Cain and his family of monsters (or something like that). Now, if that was true, we as vampires derive our nature from Cain (or similiar being), because he was cast out (more like forsaken) by God.
B) Genetic mutation- Our condition may very well be just a rare genetic hiccup ( a disease even) that affects an individual either at birth or when and if they are turned. Perhaps vampirism is an alternate codon (in protein synthesis, codons are parts of DNA that are coded by letters to differenciate between different kinds of protein types. These will soon become proteins, with the help of anti-codons, which are the opposite in letter coding) and due to it s rarity, it is poorly documented upon.
Now, whether or not a vampire can soley sustain themselves on blood or energy is entirely debatable. I believe that the more the vampire takes (and often) the more they will desire it like someone who is addicted to nicotine needs a cigarette, cigar or chewing tobacco (or any drug really; anything that creates dependancy).
Just my thoughts.
After being on this site and talking to people about there medical conditions I believe there is truth to the vampire!
You raise a good point, Macabre, but according to lore, Cain wasn't exactly cast out of the race. He was still around, just cursed. Although, if you want something like that, the myths of Lilith do correspond.
this is interesting...
i know for sure blood dependency exists, but no one in the world can survive on blood alone, its not possible.
r they real? i couldn't tell u. the possibility that they r drive some of us, even into hope. i think it started with a kack of knowledge and fear. people needed to blame something for all the bad things. minions of the devil taking human flesh to drink human blood.
very intresting debate. vampires need blood for energy, without energy a vampire would die. But that dosent mean that they need blood 24/7, maybe the energy from the blood that the consume last a few days even a week. but they can't survive just on blood, because they need the nutrients and minarals from other food sorces to survive.
This is just my opinion so please correct me if i am wrong.
I think vamps are real. In fact they are so real that the ancient Catholic church had a rite (and instructions) for killing vamps.
and there is too much ancient lore for there not to be some truth in it all.
This theory might seem a bit far fetched, but is still discussed by medical science.
There is said to be a rare deciese name Vampirc diceiese.
Basiclly the person does not produce the substance known as serotohin.. it is that substance produced by the brain as one of the man sources of energy.
furthermore, the person blood does not contain the right amount of Heamoglobin leaving their skin, the caractaristic pale shade, and often dry and cracked skin..
Now the debate goes, that if a person who carried this deciese was supplyed small amounts of blood, for example by eating bloodrich organs like liver, they could "restore" the substance they are missing.
It is also commonly known that if the body cannot produce enough energy, it will look for other sources. tis could be other people, sunlight, heat etc. hence psy vamps.
My own guess is that the blooddrinking part is another thread that links us to the animalistic world. I mean the vampire bat and the female mosquito are known blood drinkers, the live of blood by extracting the energy and trnsfering it to their own system.
Not to be argumentative, Mina Murrey, but the church also had a manual for finding witches. If you recall, it comprised of "Take a woman who catches your eye and torture her until she confesses. Should you lack torture ideas, here are a few."
The Catholic Church has been wrong about a lot of things.
"History" -- that is, the records that we have today -- are almost all written by rich white men. Most of the time, they were also the heads of the church. Any historical document should be read critically and taken with a very large contextual grain of salt.
frankthebutcher,
I have to disagree with you in the strongest terms.
Herodotus, for one, was Persian (Turkish). I expect that he was most probably not white.
Simon Schama is a Lithuanian descent Jew, certainly not 'white' in the way which you expressed it.
All through the ages, most written historical records came from the Middle East and Mediterranean regions.
So I don't quite see the point which you trying to make. Are you suggesting that the national curriculums of 'western' schools are dictated by these 'Rich White Men'?
Or that the teachers themselves are Rich and White?
At what point does your racial stereotyping fit in?
if it didn't if we didn't believe it existed would we be here?
sorry for all these posts...but i kept clicking and thinking of other things so ya...or maybe even if you do believe what is it that you believe in...cuz many believe in most aspects but not all..you know?
Mieta - Yes, people would still be here if they didn't believe vampires existed. I don't believe they exist (in the hollywood sense) I just believe that some people are more inclined to enjoy blood or are more sensitive to energy changes. I don't think this means you're a vampire. I would venture to say that some people are just looking for anything that challenges the norm of society so they can rebel in their own little way. I'm on this site because I enjoy the gothic subculture, and I knew I would find some like-minded people here. I also very much enjoy vampiric folklore, and love hearing how people think the stories started.
I'm gonna keep an eye on this thread, it is most interesting whit all the information it is gattering gradualy.
As for my belef, mostly it is a mental state mre then a physical one.
I think it was the old country Budapest people ,would die from pleg or natural causes . They did not embalm back then so the corpses would decay , later they would go back to the grave of there lost ones seeing it the tombstones moved disheavled, they would dig up the grave . Now when your dead the frist thing blood rises to the top of the skin . So the villigers seen if the corpse still looking life like ,with blood coming from the mouth eyes ect .They would take wood stake and hammer it in the corpses heart right to the ground so it would not arise.
I think it started out as a tale of something to scare villagers or people. But the human body can adapt so maybe a gorup of people somehow "made" themselves into vampires. I dunno really...
sleen - that's fascinating! I've never heard that story - where can I find out more about it?
I honestly believe it exists in both the energy and the blood forms... I know what the movies show and what people say that dont know anything about it when they criticize but I believe anything is possible...
Its my opinion that vampires require energy or life force. Taking this into consideration, fresh blood is the highest known source of "pranic energy". Now all throughout history there have been many cultures that have practiced drinking blood, but that does not make them vampires. Only a vampire can directly absorb "pranic energy" from fresh blood and that is where the attraction comes into play, but they do not live by blood alone.
It is rare that vampire cannot absorb energy in much more subtle ways, such as psychic vampires. There are problems here too, they can inflict harm to others and themselves if they fail to recognize what is happening and do conscious work on transforming their inner natures.
A "hungry" vampire whose energy level is imbalanced to the negative side, becomes an involuntary psychic vortex drawing all pranic energy in the area towards them. The demands of their own energy systems are so distracting to them that it is difficult for them to pay attention to the needs of others. This is why it is so important to be "aware" of what you are doing at all times!!
It all began when the first paleo-vampire wiggled it's way out of the primeval soup onto dry land.........
Let us also not forget the incan/ mayan tribes of past and there blood sacrifice/ drinking eating of the heart rituals
Vamprism has been passed through the ages from a very early time, mentioned in the bible and times before that, imo there is something to blood dependancy although i feel it not for i am psy
i belive my ex could feed off of my energy. she would do thi s thing cant describe it but i would feel every tired ad relaxed after but it felt good also
Who knows if it does exsist
maybe it can im not saying it cant
anythings possible
sleen is quite correct....the freshly dead have their internals begin to liquify first...and the open body orfices are the first places that leak this fluid....
not too sure how modern embalming affects this though
I think that you can live on mostly blood, but not full-blood, for where would we get the nutrients we needed the most?
Shadowgirl
All I know is that from the history i have read vlad the impailore was the first vampire (draculas story spunn off his conquests) then there wasa woman later on who bathed in the blood of a thousand inocents (not sure of her name) who was related to one of vlads generals (cawinkidink?) As for any other historica levents with vampireism i do not know, though im sure it started before the two that i mentioned.
I myself am a psy Vamp. Though I do love the taste of blood.
I do believe we're all vampires one and the same, I think we just feed in different manners. Some take this dividing line between psychic vampires and Sang quite literally and it leads to some misunderstandings.
hmmm i beleive that vampires do exist, i beleive psychic vampires do exist anyways, but who knows??
By the way, there is also a condition called Porphyria which was referenced in a recent CSI episode. In the episode there is a woman followed by the CSI and it turns up that she was in fact ingesting it's victim's blood. The scientific explanation in the episode is based on the affection called Porphyria which seems to generate a lack of chemicals in the body that can be quickly replenished through blood. You will find lots of sites about it (Porphyria) but I am not really sure if the explanation from CSI is really scientifically true...
well all are good points but here is my belief. Basicaly it all comes back to the psyvamps and here is why. Wether or not you are a sanguine a psy a sexual a drama or whatever basicaly it all comes back to energy. Now people ask well how can you say a sanguine comes back to energy. Blood is the richest sorce of energy as blood is the life force it is just taken directly and not phsycicly or however you spell that lol
Well withe the few posts I have read here well not few few might be the wrong word i read alot of these..The first issue I would liek to touch on is this blood dependecy issue. First off I think that if you are a vampire the undead the supernatural what ever you wanna call it I think all medical trecords and things such as that need to be completly thrown out the window how can something supernatural fall the natural laws of human beings? It is a contradiction to even say that...Second I guess I will address the psy and sang vampire issue now I am not goin off hollywood or books or anything from what I have sifted through and tried to research vampires are and do get energy from Blood and pys they would draw diffrent kind of energies from both but to say one or the other well thats kind of hard. And as far as I have discorver "real" vampires are very very blood dependent and sorry to say this but I dont think anyone on this site is or has met such a vampire a vampire of true nature a vampire that needs blood and psy as a life source I think that if they truely exist then they woudl be careful of who they told and who knows where they rest ...That being said I am sorry if I offended anyone of hurt feelings....Wait on second though No I am not sorry ...I think that if you choose to believe in a God or a Devil or a Heaven or a Hell Angels Demons Ghosts Spirits hell even Aliens you can not logically throw out the existence of vampires it just would no tbe a logical thing to do and I for one am searching and striving to find out the truth will I find it? Who knows ,will I give up probably not but it ell you this if i find the truth I will share it all
