Last night my boyfriend and I were laying in bed and he noticed that my earrings and necklace were tangled together. He started to undo them and when I asked him why he was doing that he told me that it was a vampire tendency he has. When I questioned him about this, he told me that it was a superstition that most vampires have.

I was wondering, what is the actual story behind this particular superstition, and are there others?

I was really curious because I have studied up on common superstitions and the history behind them and I have never heard of it either. This is really peaking my interest and I figured with so many people on this site, someone should know about it besides my boyfriend.

I highly doubt it's a vampire tendency of his. I think it's more of a pet peeve than anything, a fetish if you will.

I can't stand tangled necklaces either and have, in the past, untangled my companion's necklaces if they were to get intertwined together.

The need for vampires to solve things before they can go on to something new, or something like that. Sounds more like OCD than anything else.

I guess that could be seen as a tendency, more than likely evolved from the actual superstition, of his own accord. In other words, he is just doing it because he believe he needs to.

Ok first off I dont say things to get brownie points or anything of that nature, Secondly she was simply asking a question so why are you bashing on me?

Thirdly, the person who mentioned the rice/puzzle game is roughly on the right track of what I was refering to.

so I dont think its cool to bash anyone on this site Ive been here for a while and ive yet to bash anyone, though Ive seen it alot

So please be mature and not redicule others without knowing the whole thing.

Sorry for any who feel that this part of the thread wasnt needed however when I am being bashed then I will defend myself where its needed.

I do know alot of myths and legends however I, may not know them by a specific name

In "Dracula 2: The Ascension" one of the ways they used to distract the "vampire" was to give him problems to solve such as untangling several thousand knots, counting matchsticks, etc. The theory being that vampires are obsessed with solving riddles, in that they may one day sove the riddle that is themselves.

Everyone has their own belief system, I would not say someone is ridiculus or silly simply because they believed something.
Just because one has not heard of it, does not mean it simply is made up.How many millions of people are there nowadays, and how many millions of beliefs or ideas.
It does not make anyone mental or silly just because they may know something or believe something the other person does not.
Asking a question..is not that why there is a forum for general discussion.
When I read the question and comments after, I take it as the people who making fun of the issue are the ones who are trying impress someone. Not the person who is asking ah honest question nor her b/f.

I have heard of this and I don't remember it from Dracula 2000. It is suppose to be a way to hone the mind to be able to figure out the intricacies of there own lives. I myself have, since I was very little, been driven nuts by knots in jewelery, rope, or even just pieces of string. I could never go anywhere without some sort of mind puzzle with me and to this day if I see a knot in anything I have to stop what I am doing and untie it. I can see where someone who said that if this were the case then you would not be able to do anything but puzzles but it is only the puzzles that are in your direct path. If I had to use the rope I could not use it until I have untied the knots. I am also working different things out in my head all the time as well which are puzzles of there own right.

The only time I heard of it was on a movie the sequel to Dracula 2000. They said about he couldn't do anything until he untied a bunch of knots and something else about counting so they threw a mess load of seeds I think they were. Well he untied them with a touch and made the seeds slow down so he counted them in a second. It was really funny. The movie itself wasent that great.

Like many before me have said, there is a part of Vampire Lore that states that Vampires feel the need to count things or solve puzzles. For instance, if you are being chased by a Vampire lay out a pile of rice. He will stop to count it and you're safe. lol I didn't say I came up with it!!! So, your boyfriend--if he knows anything about Vampires--probably knows this. However, that doesn't mean it has anything to do with his Vampire nature because this particular tid bit of folklore relates to real Vampires. Don't be insulted. I mean, the walking dead, can't go in the sun, can't die kinda Vampire. That's not to say that he doesn't have his own quirks. He might not be able to stand stuff tangled up. I can't either. I also like to do stuff in increments of five. lol I'm not a Vampire just because I'm anal. ;)

Other Vampire Superstitions??? OMG... There are tons. What about garlic? Or what about horses being able to sense where a Vampire is buried and shying away from the grave? Or...my favorite...what about redheaded, blue eyed people being vampiric? Or how about that a Vampire can't see his reflection or have his picture taken? I hear this started because people say that eyes are the windows to the soul, but if a Vampire has no soul then there is nothing in him that will reflect.

*shrugs* So many neat tid bits...so little time...

Cinnamon, I have never heard of the horse thing before. Is there a place I can do research on this. I have been always interested in superstitions and folklore of all types. The puzzle thing seems odd, but as history has shown odd things tend to pop up.

As for the garlic thing goes, I have always saw that more of a myth then anything. But it also peaks my curiosity. Does anyone know the origins and the stories behind the silver, garlic, and any other vampiric myths? If not information on them, possibly a link to a site that may help me answer my question?

There is a thread entitled Garlic where I address the garlic issue. lol You can do a Google search on Vampire Folklore and find all kinds of things. I've been fascinated with Vampires from an early age, so I'm like a walking Encyclopedia full of pointless Vampire Knowledge. :D I think I read about the horses in a book I had once. I've also heard that if someone that died was thought to be a Vampire they'd fill the coffin with sawdust so that when the Vampire awoke he would be forced to count the sawdust and die come dawn.

The myth in some cultures is that a vampire is obsessive compulsive and especially so towards puzzles or counting. In this way, it was said that you could delay or stop a vampire by throwing seeds on the ground or having a rope with a bunch of knots because the vampire would have to stop and count the seeds or undo the knots.

I was unfamiliar with modern living vampires who felt that they too were suffering from this weakness.

I might have heard something along those lines, but I'd have to agree with Cinnamon on this though. There are so many Vampire superstitions that I've heard of; for example the tendency to finish all things and perfectionism. I've also heard (though I don't believe it's a superstition) that Vampires excel at things like, Sudoku, and stuff like that...

But thats just me. There a probably much much more.

I also wonder if it has something to do with knot rituals. I mean, I walked into the room and she was wearing my antimagic talisman. Aside from her being alergic to the chain, I was miffed that she would put it on when she was in my bed. AS if being in my bed were not protection enough.

Ot that she was protecting herself from the spell I was casting...

something like that. A superstition to prevent him from dominance of some situation.

Damn, I think I just said something that should have stayed in my F'n head.

*laughs*

To speak to the original question, yes I have heard of the superstition that vampires feel compelled to untie knots. It was in an episode of the X Files that the vamp had to untie shoe laces that were knotted up before he could bite Mulder. *chuckle* That is not the only place I've heard fo that one, but it is what first came to mind.

There is also one that if you scatter mustard seeds (or marbles, or beads) that the vampire will have to pick them all up and count them. Before they can continue pursuit of their victem. There is somethign about nets catching vampires because of untieing the knots as well. And then there is the vamp I know who cannot leave his kitchen counter with a drop of anything on it, and another who has all the books on his shelves arranged in a particular order that only he understands.

Conclusion from these superstition and observations: Vampires tend toward bad OCD! Many are highly intelligent beings and thus get obsessive-compulsive. *hmmm* It is something to think about.

I have never heard of this particular superstition. It might have ancient roots which we have not heard of. There must be some symbolism with the twisting of jewelry. This does pose an interesting question.

I am bad about undoing knots too. Not sure of any superstition or belief founded on it, but it does drive me insane. It's interesting to see people with new or different beliefs about Vampiric life and culture. To each their own.
