Today I completed my cross country flight with an instructor. A few things happened over the past week that prevented me from completing it before now.
When most people hear cross country they think, "across the country". That's not what this flight was. We flew from Phoenix to Tucson and back, stopping at various airports. The training is meant to teach the student pilot dead reckoning and navigation skills.
The roundtrip flight took just over 2 hours. I have to do the same trip by myself in a couple of weeks. It was my longest flight thus far.
I also moved up to the Cessna 172, from the Cessna 150. The 172 is a much better plane. I'm glad I moved up, as I was considering buying a 150. They can be found for $10,000 - $15,000. But after flying the 172, I won't even consider a Cessna 150.
I had my second solo flight today. The weather was much calmer so it was nicer. I got in 5 touch -n go's.
Tomorrow I plan/do my first cross country trip.

Wow. 'cross country trip'... That's big stuff.
Very nice
Going towards Idaho? lol, very cool.....
Bring some Red Bull ;)
Love to know what your stops are :D
oh do ask your instucter about charlie at cross city, fl.
Just ask about it, since sadly charlie is dead now. but its a story i think your love to hear.
Can't wait to hear about your first cross country trip.
Have fun on that trip and fly safely!

Congratulations on your Solo and Happy Birthday, great timing!
That is awesome. I've wondered how the controls are in the smaller planes, are they a little touchy or do you have a bit of room for small mistakes?
It's not like in the movie Airplane! where if you stop steering for one second the whole plane goes into a nosedive? heh
Wow that is great news
happy future with wings
and happy birthday wishes too
xXx
Great day for you and Happy Birthday. :)
The controls are similar, but the weight is obviously a lot less. My Cessna 150 maxes out at 1600 pounds. I was probably flying it around 1350 pounds today.. So you get knocked around a lot when there's turbulence.
That's pretty awesome that your first solo flight was on your birthday. Congratulations on that milestone. That's one of the coolest things any human can do... learn to fly :)
Congrats on the solo flight and Happy Birthday
Congratulations and Happy Birthday
A day you will never forget, congrats and best birthday wishes!
Way to go!
Woo, you're old(er)! :P
Hey - Congrats and Happy Birthday!!!
Congrats on your flight, and happy birthday.
Congrats and Happy Birthday!!! You deserve it.
Very cool.
AND
Happy b-day.
Congratulations on the solo and Happy Birthday.
Happy Birthday!!!!!!! Congrads on the solo.
Ditto on the birthday wishes & solo flight. Are the other solo flights going to be in the same plane or is a Piper in the future?
I'll be moving up to a Cessna 172 when I start doing my cross country trips. I do want to start flying Piper's, but not until after I get my private pilot license. The Piper Arrow III/IV in particular, looks like a very good plane.
It's good fun to be doing something you enjoy. Good luck when you move up. ... and many happy returns.
Congratulations and Happy Birthday.
You're far better off with the tougher conditions. Too many people get their ticket without any exposure to less than ideal conditions and auger in the first time they hit a crosswind landing, marginal visability or updraft / dowdraft.
Happy birthday, and congratulations on the milestone.
Congratulations on your solo flight, good luck with the rest of your flight training. It's an exhilarating experience, isn't it? ;)
Piper Arrow III/IV seems like a good plane design, more streemlined then a few others with a bit more wing span. Cool Beans and good luck!
Happy Birthday !
What a Great way to spend your birthday!
Congratulations! Lake Havasu will be just a short hop for you now.
That is awesome!! I'd love to learn to fly.
That is so great for you, and landing is harder than flying in my opinion LOl
may want to take a few skydiving lessons .. I loved that. I think being able to do your first solo on your B-day was a great present to yourself. :) I look forward to future updates.
turbulance is always a bite in the butt.. Yet, as you said makes you a better pilot in the long run.
Hope the rest of your B-day went just as great.

Sounds exciting but I'm wondering what "dead reckoning" is, sounds ominous :)

Quick question, do you do preflights of the plane before getting inside? I've seen some who did not and wondered why they would do that. Taking something that is mechanical up into the air against the will of gravity seems to me to be reason enough to want to make sure of its integrity prior to lift off.

Congratulations!
The Cessna 172 is suppose to be the better of the two from what I have heard. Good luck with all of this! :)

When I was going for my private pilot's license, I stuck with the 152 the whole way; it was a cheaper plane to use and I found most of the controls to be universal and easy to parallel against other more sophisticated aircraft.
The best plane I have ever flown was a Diamond Star, small carrying capacity though.

The diamond star looks neat, but they're expensive. They haven't been on the market that long and used ones still cost a lot.
I'm thinking a 1965 (or so) Mooney M20e or M20f is right for me. 200hp, manual retracting landing gear, 150+ knot crusing speed, and 10 GPH fuel burn.
Economical and fast.

Take into account the cost of a jet black paint job, red bat graph and the Vampire Rave logo. ;)

oh, nice.
Would you do a paint job with the site's logo on it?
I think that would be pretty neat.
