Has anyone here on VR ever read any good Vampire Books? I just started reading the Saga that Stephanie Myers put out on bookshelves. The twilight was awesome and she has 3 more books that follows called the Moon, the Eclipse, and the breaking Dawn. If anyone has read any other romancenovel/ sci fi books let me know thanks!!!

I do not read to many books for enjoyment, but I did read one a couple years back, it was about Jesus being a vampire. It was strange, but interesting. I believe it was called last Supper, but not positive and I cant remember the writers name.

Lost Souls by Poppy Z Brite is a very unique story in which she takes an entirely different approach to the Vampire lore. It's easily one of my favorites in that genre. Poppy Z Brite is an author that I am surprised more people don't list in discussions like this as she's been around for some time. She has an almost lyrical way of writing which captures you right away into the story. I highly recommend her and her books.

I read Twilight. Liked Jacob and his crew, but Edward and the other vampires seemed cheesy. Like overdone Superman. (And that's saying something.) I mean, they don't die or weaken in sunlight, they run at the speed of light, can be run over with automobiles, etc. Bet that in the movie, they'll fly too.

Like a couple Anne Rice (Vittorio, Interview, etc), and Amelia Atwater-Rhodes. My friend's going to lend me Dracula after she's done.

Peeps and The Last Days were pretty good. Parasitic slugs. Who would have thought? Very good plots too.

I am reading Bram Stoker's Dracula which is part of a set of three novels titled Three Vampire Tales. The other two are Sheridan Le Fanu's Carmilla and John Polidori's The Vampyre. The collection is edited by Anne Williams. I recommend it as a good foundation because much vampire folklore is based on these novels.

I guess their sexual since some people think of drinking blood as a sexual pleasure. Hell, apparently taking a crap and pissing can be considered orgasmic pleasure (I'm never taking psychology again).

Anywho, people are also wrapped up in the "vamps are beautiful and graceful and god-like" propaganda--I think they somehow mixed succubi and incubi with vamp legends. Whatever happened to the legends of vamps that were flaming heads flying around?

Most times I would prefer to first read a book, and then visualize what the characters look like, then to be able to see what they look like through the eyes of a director.

My favorite was seeing how the Harry Potter books translated to the movie.

Anne Rice is also an author I have grown quite fond of, the book Interview with a vampire was very well written.

I have read many other vampirebooks, one of them about the bloody countress. The author slipped my mind, but what I liked about it was the it was facts mixed with fiction.

People have pretty much covered the prolific Anne Rice and Anita Blake series, with so many more covered in the vampire database right here on VR.

I love finding the obscure books about vampires sometimes I enjoy them more than the main stream authors.

"Vampires, Burial, and Death: Folklore and Reality" by Paul Barber was offered to me by my best friend. Its an excellent read. I would highly recommend it.

"Barber has written a stimulating, authoritative discourse on the relationship between the historical concepts of vampires in folklore and fiction across the ages and throughout the world. To explain the underlying myraid interment and mourning practices designed to keep the dead at bay, he postulates a universal fear of the"vampire/revenant." .... taken from Amazon.

She's been writing vampire novels as long as Anne Rice has.

Kind of a paralell universe... If you go to the Vampire Database they have a review of at least one of them the first one in the seirese is Marked.

Then there is a woman named Christine Feehan...she writes Paranormal romance novels and the Dark Series is her Vampire collection.

Of Course there are the Ann Rice but there are soo many new writers coming out with Vampire novels. mostly romance and some mystery..

Now for sci fi novels I would suggest Marion Zimmer Bradley's Darkover Series...

The premise behind the Series is that a "lost ship" of "Terran" origin...Earth being Terra Firma for the purpose of this Series..lands on a planet with a dim red sun which is later called Darkover...the societal structure is medieval/feudal and the nobility possess "laran"...meaning various psychic abilities dependent on their geanology i.e. family line...:)

Because it's feudal there's alot of warring with the use of these abilities...and there's romance too...check it out...:)

There are two series that I am totally in love with.

The first is the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton. There are at least 16 books in this series. I love Laurell's sytle of writing in the first person. She is so great a descriptions that sometimes I feel as if I am reading my own journal or something. In the later books she does get quite a bit steamy...LoL

The other series is the Lover series by JR Ward. I just started reading these books and there are 4 or 5 so far in the series with a new one due to be released in the early summer this year.

Another sci fi trilogy that I liked was C.S Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy...

No happy endings here folks...lots of darkness...the main character feeds off the fear of young, nubile maidens as he tortures them in order to extend his life...he just happens to also be the hero too...to save the humans from a soul devouring darkness...muahahaha

Oops, here it is:

They've been around since Tolstoy and Poe were sharpening their quills - why do vampire novels have such lasting appeal?
May 21, 2008 3:30 PM

Books don't have to cast mere mortals to play the vamp

From Dracula to Lestat to Mona the Vampire, the thirst for vampire novels is unquenchable. They've been examined from every conceivable angle, done to death as it were, and yet literature about them proliferates at greater speed than vampires themselves could ever hope to. So what is it about books featuring the undead that holds us so much in thrall?
Vampires were around long before they became popular reading material: superstitions about demonic blood-drinkers can be found in numerous cultures throughout history. However, it was not until vampires entered the realm of fiction in the 19th century that they became associated with sexuality and mystique. The big daddy of the vampire novel is, of course, Dracula. Initially not very successful, Bram Stoker's novel has come to embody the archetype. But vampires had already enjoyed literary outings in Tolstoy, Poe and most notably in Le Fanu's lesbian vampire novel Carmilla and John William Polidori's seminal 1819 short story The Vampyre.

By today's standards Dracula is outmoded. Modern fiction ups the glamour factor of vampires and reduces the gothic flavour that typifies earlier novels. It also tends to humanise the vampire, presenting it as having emotional capabilities. Though Dracula contains plenty of sadistic sexual imagery, its eponymous villain is portrayed as evil without much further psychological complexity. Coppola's adaptation pays wonderful homage to Hammer, but despite being called Bram Stoker's Dracula, it is in fact anything but. It seeks to explain him as a man, making him traumatised by the suicide of his wife. Coppola's film ties in with the evolution of the vampire novel: we no longer simply want to watch these creatures and be frightened - we want to get inside their heads and imagine what it is like to be them.

Interview with the Vampire is surely 'sire' - as Buffy would put it - to the contemporary breed of vampire novel. Anne Rice's many follow-ups to her 1973 classic range from the trashy but addictive Queen of the Damned trilogy to the elegiac Tale of the Body Snatcher, but to my mind Interview stands as the most significant and original in her series. Set in 18th-century France, it focuses on a young man named Louis who, overcome with grief following the deaths of his family, accepts an offer to become a vampire. This is followed by terrible guilt and unhappiness at the crimes his new condition makes him commit - as well as some profound questions about existence. Rice's protagonist is both human and non-human: crucially, he has a conscience. The novel was made into a film with Tom Cruise, and although Rice herself admitted it wasn't bad, like most adaptations it pales in comparison to the book. There is something about vampires which films, for all their special effects, are just not able to capture. No matter how well made it is, sooner or later we will forget to suspend disbelief and be forced to contend with the fact that we are watching the guy from Top Gun in a wig and lots of white make-up. Books, which do not have to cast mere mortals as vampires, are not so easily undone.

The appeal of vampires for teenagers deserves special consideration, since sagas written for this readership may well be the ultimate resting place of the vampire novel. Not only are vamps portrayed as sophisticated loners, reviled by their peers and tormented by their bloodlust, but for some reason they like to hang about in schools. As with Rice's books and Christopher Pike's The Last Vampire chronicles, vampires are represented as super-powered, virtually immortal and probably capable of ruling the world if they chose - a seductive concept, especially for the alienated teen.

One thing is certain about vampires - no matter in which medium they are fed to us, we're not going to lose our appetite for them any time soon. Yet I suspect the reason the vampire novel will continue to endure is because words have the power to capture and sustain the allure and mystique that surrounds them in a way that films, despite their more visceral properties of sound and image, do not.

I like the Sonja Blue series by Nancy A Collins myself. Her prose is lean & mean and keeps the momentum constantly going forward. It's definitely not for the faint of heart.

Paint It Black
(These first three books have also been published in one large edition together titled Midnight Blue: The Sonja Blue Collection)

I agree, Dracula and then Carmilla. The so-called lesbianism in Carmilla is a misinterpretation, though. It would be natural for one adolescent to seek out another, and the exchange of affection appropriate for their time.

I read Bram Stoker's 'Dracula' at age 11, 'Salem's Lot' at 14, Ann Rice's 'Interview With The Vampire' & Ian Mathesson's 'I Am Legend' at 15, books I have since returned to, but would actually cite 'The Vampire Lestat' as the finest of them. The best test of all are the books which transfer over to film very well, and 'Interview With the Vampire' is the most wonderful example. We are not talking film, here, we know, but a point worth making...;)

I have read all of Anne Rice's Vampire Chronicles. I started reading Christine Feehan's Dark Series which I find to be very romantic, erotic, and I really enjoy her fantasy vampires atm. They are beings that can control nature, mind-control, very protective and usually on the edge of turning into vampires if they do not find their lifemates in time. So before they "change" , they are considered Carpathian protectors of their Prince and live to hopefully keep their race going with their special lifemates. ^^
