There is something I've noticed over the past few days that has me wondering and more then a little concerned. I read Camedia's post (sorry if I spelled your name wrong hon) About the problems in China. One of the VR members who responded in the post used the racist term *Chink* Does this represent the Rave in a positive way? I think not. I've also seen the the *N* word recently. And yes I've gone to the admin about it. I think racism like the real world is brutal and here at the Rave, SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED. Members of the Rave, to me this is very serious and I think all of us can teach one another, let's start by stopping this as soon as possible.

I think racist humor is exceptionally funny and can actually disarm racial tensions. The bad part is that everyone is going to have to use their best judgment. That being what it is, it's best to keep these things to a minimum.

Yes Marius It is wrong, But the Lady above me has a good point. I use Mexican slurs many times in my humor, Hell I welcome them so long as in a humorous mood. But I have a feeling the way they were mentioned as you saw them were not meant to be that way. Unfortunately We cannot subdue racism yet, if at all. People that use them as derogatory terms on VR should be suspended for a short time after One warning if they use it again. If they repeat well deletion.

I whole heartedly agree with you, darling. I do not believe that this is the place for racial slurs or any kind of predjudices. We all come here for comfort, solidarity, hominess, and likemindedness. Its rediculous to think that this type of behaviour would even be remotely tolerated here by any of the Raves members, let alone administrators.

Think about it this way...some ppl were raised by parents that use the racial slurs...or hang with ppl that use them...some ppl say the things they say to look *cool* in front of their friends or don't even think about what they say...because of TV ...music...movies...I don't use or condone the use of this terms...and you can't always get others to stop what they are used to saying or doing

Excellent thread Marius. I had hoped that this place would be free from such ugliness... apparently not. With so many people who find this place because they feel "different" and are looking for understanding and acceptence you would think there would be more tolerance and less ingnorance. Wolfie, I agree with you to a point. My parents didn't use racial slurs, but my grandparents and the rest of my family did and the large majority of the ppl I hung out with did, unfortunately. I don't include those words in my vocabulary, and I never have. Its just something I taught mysel not to do. Even those who have been brought up around those words and beliefs can be mature enough to control their mouths and, inthis case, their fingers...

Lusious, how can you say that everyone is a racist in one way or another? That is such a generalized statement, and I completely oppose it. I am in no way a racist...I hate everyone equally. I approach everyone in the same way, no matter their race, creed, culture, religion, etc.

Yeah, I've noticed this too, it really needs to stop before it gets out of hand, this is one of the only communities I feel like I can fit into and with some of us being racist assholes, I don't feel like I can fit in much longer, also in some ways when I first joined this site, I felt like it gave me some more like insight on other people races so I really dont think that should be taken from new comers, the long dwellers and also me.

Racism is bad, but when done right, it can be downright funny. I am not a racist (hell, my first love was a black man), but, then again, I do have a twisted sense of humor.

I think Marius speaks for most of us here... This is a place where most, if not all of us, have come to be accepted for what they are and not judged for silly differences... There are differences between everyone, so how can anyone say that it is right to pick apart one thing about a person?... The racial comments really do need to stop, for the good of the offended party and the perpetrator... Maybe there should be an admin thing that if they see anyone using such language, they could kick them off for a while... It's just a though... Penalties always seem to work against people...

I dont very many said white....i bet some said black, some blue, some pink and some yellow, purple, green and whatever else. How can you have a favorite color that is not white yet you decrisate agaisnt those that wear a certain color. I for one have a favorite color of black and i like pink.....i have to say if i met someone who was pink i would think they were the coolest person but how many people would make fun of them i can granitee it would be a lot of people and its just because they are different

I have not had the chance to run into the few who choose to be racist, but I have had a few friends not want to be a part of vr anymore because of the slurs. I think the people whom choose to use slurs are just frusterated with themselves and are acting out to get the attention they want.

I personallu find it fusterating, and confusing. I mean many people I have run into that choose to use slur words, Actually have the mixed bloodlines in them. i find this odd because if they are making fun of someone else because of something, arent they technically making fun of themselves?

Racism is ignorance and stupidity. There is a comedic value to it, but its pretty hard to make it funny online.

A stand up comedy bit I saw a few months ago comes to mind at this thread.

It was a black comedian, who at one point pulled a white guy from the audience onto the stage. The vast majority of the crowd were black.

The comedian asked the guy to do him a favor. Something he did all the time, nothing major. It was even part of what he got paid to do.

He pointed to the exit at the far end of the audience and told the guy... "I just want to say nigger three times and try to walk out that door."

The guy proceeded to blush, became nervous and embarrased, and started stammering.

Marius, I am afraid that you are most likely speaking to the choir as it were.

But, in Psychological studies, it has been shown that racism in and of itself is very difficult to circumvent. That is not an excuse, it just shows you how hard you have to work in order to change someone's perceptions--education does work, but it is only a component of the re-education process as it were. In addition, there are social ramifications in which people, knowing that it is not socially acceptable, will not utter a racist word or phrase in public, but will where they they believe they are safe and with like-minded individuals. By bringing this to their attention that it not acceptable here, the people will only, most likely, not utter the phrases in public and only do so when they speak via personal message or whatnot. In this manner, their attitudes are not changed, just their behavior--and only for certain environmental-dependent circumstances. I understand that many would like to see racism fade away into oblivion, but it isn't so simple as education and watching your wording. The best way to get rid of racism to start the education process while they are young so that racist tendencies are not ingrained in the child so thoroughly as when it is when they become adults. Once they reach puberty, most of those things are already set and personality is very difficult to change.

The only thing I'm racist against is ignorance. We are all guilty of this, some more than others. I don't agree with the use of such words, even if you have "permission" in the real world to use it. That permission may have been given by one or two people and not all may be okay with it. I don't like it when people call me a cracka' or a whore or the like. They don't know me and I dont' know them. I think people should keep their permissions to themselves and the people who gave them the right.

And yes, I think this should be frowned upon majorly by the administration of VR. It is low and disrespectful. Those who have such terms in their profiles should have to remove them. In the forums it may be harder to control it.

I understand that this would require more work for the admins and Cancer but if something could be agreed on, we can all participate in the finding and deleting of such words.

Just want to add something,racism happens even with people of the same country.

For example even though I live in a very small island,I still get a sort of racism cause am from the south and get called villager.

And once I've noticed this too,that there were people from the same country but one of them offended the other cause lived in another part.

the N* word, as it is so politly said here, is yes, an insult, but it has now also become a term of endeerment amoung blacks. on a regular basis, i hear in the streets conversations where that word is said at least 50 times. and now since we (black people as a whole) use that word that has enslaved us, lynched us, held us in chains for generations so freely, other races use that same word as a term of endeerment as well. last week, i refused to serve a group of rich non-black private high school boys for using that word in my presence as a term of endeerment. the exact phrase was: "yeah, y'all my niggas fo' sho!" they were uspet and threateded to call my manager. when i called their bluff by grabbing the telephone and start dialing numbers, they walked out of my store. yes, i have been called the N* word and it hurt. but amoung my own race, i am called an "oreo"- someone that is black on the outside, but white on the inside; as in "acting white". that hurts more than anything. it's bad enough that blacks are opressed by other races, but why must we bash our own? does anyone see how scary that is, or is it just me?

I just watched Chris Rocks stand up comedy.

He said nigger about 100 times to a mixed audience. I didnt see anyone get offended, and i barely noticed the word.

The N word...it depends...I have some good black friends and well white as I am I get called niggah and I call them niggah back.
It's just in the way that you use it.
They're R&B'ers/Rappers and well They're great fun and we use it in a way to indicate that we're friends.

I was raised in a slightly racist family, as my granparents on one side had slaves, however grandparents on the other side lived and played with black children. I have been told racist jokes since I can remember, and they werent excluding of whites. Many redneck or hillbilly jokes can be hurtful too. I had been tought as Maruis' last definition for nigger said. I was taught that a nigger can be of any race or color, not just black, rather itsa a lazy ass person who does nothing for themselves, trashy, perfectly able to work but get welfare instead. (and just so nobody misunderstands me... I know plenty of people who deserve the welfare that they are getting, because they need it badly and barely survive off of it. I know others who recieve welfare, when they should be out there getting a job, but they arent even getting out to look for one. that pisses me off.)

So anyway. I came to this site to escape from the not just racist but predjudices of the world. I guess some came here just to bring it.
