Shadow people are supernatural shadow-like humanoid figures that, according to believers, are seen flickering on walls and ceilings in the viewer's peripheral vision.[1] They are often reported moving with quick, jerky movements, and quickly disintegrate into walls or mirrors. They are believed to be evil and aggressive in nature, although a few people consider them to be a form of guardian angel.[2]

In 2010, the apparitions were described as one of the most regularly reported paranormal phenomena in the United States. This is attributed to occasional reports on the Coast to Coast AM show, where paranormal researcher Heidi Hollis has been interviewed several times on the subject of shadow people. Hollis believes that shadow people have always existed, that they feed upon emotions of fear, and that they can be repelled by thinking positively.[2] Others believe that shadow people may be the extra-dimensional inhabitants of another universe.[3]

The stories of shadow people have been compared to those of the Raven Mocker, a witch from Cherokee Indian mythology who sometimes appears as a shadowy phantom, and the Islamic Jinn.[2]

Several scientific principles can be used to explain reports of apparitional experiences such as shadow people. These include sleep paralysis, [4] illusions,[5] or hallucinations brought on by physiological or psychological circumstances, drug use or side effects of medication, and the interaction of external agents on the human body. Another reason that could be behind the illusion is sleep deprivation, which may lead to hallucinations.[6]

Don't shoot me for my comment. If you was my patient, I will give a diagnostic of: Paranoia Schizophrenia. The hallucinations and delusions are the main characteristic of this mental decease.

I too have seen these shadow people, though it was more in my minds eye, not physically seeing them. As a child I was plagued by these shadows. I was afraid of them. Over a time they became more frequent..and I would see them in visions and sometimes dreams. Sometimes I still see them, but not as often.

In my experience these beings are dark, but not in a negative sense. They are sometimes tricky, they sometimes like to watch people be scared because they think it's funny. Over a long time, I befriended one which was extremely strange and..well..not human. This one seeming to have more of an intelligence than others. It also looked different. He now protects me, at least that's what I feel personally.

Some of these shadow people aren't shadow people though, sometimes they are nature spirits in which appear to be shadows. Some of them are encountered in places where nature isn't restricted by human structures. Or near places which are close to a woods.


I have always approached them with caution. Most of them seem to guide me in places in visions which lead me to knowledge. Clarity is a better word though, understanding a situation more after seeing them in visions or through hard times.

If anything..my experiences started off as negative but evolved into positive, only because I accepted the darkness and negativity as a good thing in the end. I accepted that the night time was necessary for life and balance. In my religion, we would call these beings wights. Spirits in which are intelligent is the definition in simple terms. It's quite interesting.

I constantly live with Shadow People, whether I'm at home, the grocery store or just outside away from home, it is like they are connected to me somehow.

I don't get any bad feelings from them, I kinda consider them my watchers, I wouldn't necessarily call them guardian angels, they are just there, watching me.

I never try to approach any of them, or try to interact with them, I leave them be to do what they want to do. I figure if they want to interact they will on their own.

I also saw some shadow beings in visions although it's possible that there might be different kinds of them or even many reasons for why they take this form.

The ones I saw seemed to look upon me from a distant place, observing and guarding some entrance.

Regardless of what we know to be true because we have experienced it there is always things we dont know. I remember growing up as a kid watching my grandmother give readings for people by mearly touching something they had touched. when I asked her how she did that her reply was there are many things you can see and many you cannot, are the ones you can see any more real than the ones you can't. Although I did not see what she did it still did not change the fact that she did.
Shadow people, reflections of a life force that once was , residual energy produced by the fold who knows what these things are for sure we can only assume a possition based on the information we have at hand. The sad thing is most of the time the information we have is insufficient to say the least.

I wrote an article for an e-zine back in 2006, on the shadow people and there are many theories as to what they could be but no definitive explanation other than people claim to see them. There are more than two theories. I asked one of my daughters to write about her experience and I will post that here. I don't know what they are, no one does and anything I would say would only be opinion. I had three anecdotal stories in my article. Draw your own conclusions because some people are seeing the same type of shadow people right down to this one...the hat man.

STORY ONE

A few years ago, I was sitting at my computer in the middle of the night, trying to think of something interesting I could do online; something different from the same old routine. I started racking my brain for anything interesting, unique, or obscure to look up. Then I thought of something from my childhood, when I was about four or five years old. But how to look it up…I didn’t quite know what “it” was. Especially since it was just a dark figure with no real features, just pretty much a tall black shadow that (at 4 or 5 yrs old) too closely resembled a witch!!! That’s when I decided, just for kicks, to see what would come up if I entered a search for “Shadow People”!!!

The first shock was discovering that I was not the only one to encounter shadow people. Apparently they are everywhere, because there was an almost endless supply of websites devoted to encounters with them. The second shock was realizing that my perception as a child, in thinking the shadowy figure was a witch, was all wrong. And while browsing through the different sites, I found one that had drawings/pictures that were submitted by people that have seen these creatures. At first, the pictures ranged anywhere from far-fetched to downright absurd…pretty funny even. At least until I got to the picture that had me staring directly at “my” shadow person again for the first time in over 24 years…..

As a little girl, I stayed at my Grandparents’ house a lot, even living there off and on at different times. The majority of my childhood memories are connected with that house. It has always been the one stable constant thing in my life…since that is where my Grandparents have lived my whole life and are still there to this day. The most confusing memory I have always had was during a particularly hard part of my life. It started when I was about four or five years old. During this time, I can remember visiting with my Dad a lot and in between visits…at my Grandparents house (I should mention now that they are my Grandparents on my Mother’s side). My Dad and Mom were divorced and my Dad remarried to a particularly cruel woman. Funny thing though, she was only cruel to me for some reason. She never had a problem with my sister…never really figured out why.

But I don’t want to stray from my purpose here, so moving on…My Grandmother has always told me that during my visits to their house, after being at my Dad’s, I would have constant nightmares and would scream in the middle of the night. She would describe them as blood curdling screams. I don’t remember any of this and can’t recall a single nightmare. What I do remember though, was waking up every morning…it scared the hell out of me. I remember it being the same every morning…my sister would already be awake and out of bed. I’ve never been a morning person, so I was usually always last to wake up. I would open my eyes, look up, and standing on the side of my bed down toward my feet…there was this person standing there looking down at me.

I don’t really know if “person” would be an accurate description as there were no discernable features…the figure of a person, but it was all black…like a solid shadow. The only details I could make out were what appeared to be a cape and what looked like a wide brimmed hat. I never kept my eyes open long enough to try to figure it out. It always happened the same way…I opened my eyes, saw the figure, quickly pulled my covers up over my head, counted to three, then jumped from my bed to the door and ran down the hall. What I remember thinking was that it looked like a witch and I figured she was there to get me. This memory has never left me and I can see it in my head today as clear as if it happened yesterday.

Sitting in my room staring at this shadow person, “my shadow person,” on the computer was scary, exciting, freaky, unbelievable, and a whole list of other emotions that just flooded through me. It didn’t look sort of like it…it was immediate recognition, almost like seeing a long lost friend after years of separation. Only thing was, this was not a witch. In fact, it is more often described as masculine and the wide brimmed hat almost a bolero style. It made sense to me at that moment why I, at four or five years old, would look up and see the wide brim hat and cape and of course…I mistook it for being the brim of the classic witch’s Halloween hat.

The website I found the picture on was the old Art Bell website. The picture is no longer there. In fact, his website was completely redone or moved shortly after that and I could no longer find the picture to show people as an example of my experience. So, I forgot about it for quite some time. Until….I started getting involved in an internet ezine publication that my Mom is involved in. The Graveyard Press impressed me and I thought it was pretty cool that my Mom was such an instrumental part of it. What was even more exciting was that my Mom had taken an interest in an article…or more like me ranting on about something that irritates me (I’m good at that!!) and wanted to put in the publication. So, that started my involvement and I decided to check it out further.

That’s when I saw the article coming out…Shadow People!!! Once again that scary, excited, tingling feeling came over me and I started searching the net again. And once again, I stumbled on a website that had me staring right at my shadow person. This website calls him the hat man and when the picture came on my screen, I jumped so quickly, I think I may have literally come out of my skin…at least that’s what it felt like for that split second. The website I found this on was:

I told my Mother about my experience and the strange way that the Shadow People keep appearing in my life and her suggestion…write about it. My conclusion: I don’t know what they are, I don’t know why they are here, I do know that at least one of them had an interest in me…but as for the reason why, I may never know.

I have had countless experience with shadow people. I will only post the evidence I have that is unrefutable.
Most people see these shadow people from their peripheal vision.. I got to see it head on.

It was about 8pm and dark already outside, and the only light I had was behind me(the street lamp) which is far from my driveway and blocked alot by the vehicles in my driveway.. especially my dad's huge army truck.
Anyway, I was sitting by the side of my house facing the trailer parked in the back yard in front of me; of course I was looking at the woods in my yard as well.
For some reason.. I looked at a certain bush several feet from the trailer and someone jumped up from it and sprinted across the trailer.. It stopped in the middle for a moment, then completely vanished. This was a dark shadow of a human form, called sprinters.. they are fickle and would rather be unknown than seen by us. That's why they run and vanish if you happen to know them.

Being a natural skeptic, I thought of any way it couldn't possibly be a spirit. But, the only way that a shadow could've down that was if someone was running behind me and that's not possible since I didn't hear their footsteps on the crunch of my gravel driveway.
Think of it what you will. There are a ton of things out there you wouldn't believe. ;)

I forgot to mention that I was completely sober at that point in time.. I tend to see things easier that way.

I believe I saw shadow people but only in reflections like a mirror and the tv's screen when switched off.

I don't know maybe in my case it was rather a poltergeist then a shadow person. On that year in particular I experienced lots of paranormal phenomenals, two of them were experienced by my brother too.

Good thing the internet is making this open but there is still the idea that people who have these experiences have to have something wrong with them. Why it can't be possible to think all these things are possible?

I don't do drugs, I wasn't on meds, I don't drink alcohol and didn't have sleep issues. The same about my brother.
I also dont feel happy or special. Quite the opposite. I wish I never went through these things.

It's real simple. Shadow People have been around forever, and no it's not a mind trick thing either. Even our "ghost hunters" have captured evidence of them being around as well so we can rule out them being tricks of the mind, esp when hundreds can account for witnessing or seeing them personally. I'm sure if you were to gather a world-wide testimony, the numbers would be surprising esp. the different experiences others have had with said "shadow people".

Secondly, they are beings that you see in THEIR dimension, not our own. So that is why they move quickly, move through doors, walls etc because they aren't really ghosts, but rather individuals outside of body. Some consider them watchers, and sometimes they have traits of psychic vampires. Their energy feels heavy to us because they are simply, PURE energy.

Reason i know these things is because they have been a part of life too from childhood to adulthood. However if they become bothersome, simply tell them to go away. At least that worked for me.

I don't know who or what they are, but I can personally attest to the reality of these so-called "Shadow People". I have seen them for years and years and in very different locales, too. For me, I can almost always sense their presence before I can see them. It's just a feeling of not being alone or that I am being watched. I will then start to look in the general direction of where the presence seems to be and I'll suddenly see extremely rapid movement in the shape of a person dart from one shadow to another, until I lose track of where it went. The behavior of running from one shadow to another makes me think that they don't like light.

The shadow people that I have seen appear to literally be made out of shadows while being very clearly in a humanoid form. They can move very fast and very quietly as, even when they appear to be moving at a full run, there is almost no noise associated with the movement. I have never seen one of them in the daylight. I have never seen one of them indoors and when I have seen them outside, they appear to be trying to hide inside of bushes or near trees, but always where shadows are the darkest.

It's actually a bit of a relief to find that I am not alone in having seen these things! I don't know what the shadow people actually are, so I won't even venture a guess. One thing I do know is that, for me at least, they are very, very creepy and I don't like them at all.

I have seen shadow people and ghosts my whole life. It's become such second nature, that it doesn't even phase me anymore.

During my researches (I am the same person that put up the anecdotal story), many that are interested in this phenomenon state that in the early days when people started to talk about what has been labeled Shadow People, people glimpsed them. The peripheral vision sighting that was mentioned. Nowadays they are seeing them more straight on. Not everyone of course but it has been reported more often now and for some they are getting more solid in nature. Who knows what they are but I think some are more sensitive to them because possibly they are more sensitive to higher frequencies than others. I equate that with one person having bad eyesight and others better than 20/20. Some people are more sensitive to things than others and because of it you get the lines drawn between those who believe and those who do not merely because they have never seen them. That isn't exactly definitive evidence against the existence of these things. What they are...no one knows.

I see many things.what you are describing isn't shadow people it is something else. can't remember what they are called. they don't usually try to hurt you unless you do something to upset them though.

now I remember. it is called a shade.

Personally, I haven't seen shadow people, but I've heard about them from different sources and have researched them a little...from what I see, they are evil and deceptive. Not good people. Not trapped spirits. They may befriend you only to betray you.
Again though, I don't have firsthand experience, this is just from what I've read.

Yea "they" "appear" when a person is prone to suggestion, and predisposed, and biased by other reports of such things.

I searched for this and found a whole site where they investigate encounters, when I'll be on the pc I'll provide the link.

I remember seeing these when i was little. They gave me the creeps!

dang it.why are your shadow people friendly,when mine always tries to kill me.and no i am not being sarcastic,i really do have a shadow man that follows me around and tries to strangel me in my sleep.

I believe they exist. When entities not recognised by this plane of existence, they reveal themselves as "shades" or "shadow people". This is what I have come to know through experience. It would be selfish and ignorant to assume we're the only living beings of this world!
They seldom try to make contact, if you'd consider them appearing a method of trying to make contact. But when they do, I am not sure what happens. Has anyone actually spoken to one?
All I know is they just run around places and are pretty good at disappearing!

ive heard about shadow people on coast to coast am back when it was art bell. one suggestion regarding what they were was interesting to me...it was that they were actually extra dimensional and might just be a "glimpse across the veil" so to speak.

Mine happened to be all together with other experiences on a particular year only. Chances are mine were Poltergeist during a very difficult time. In effect that was the worst year of my life.

I know of there existence although i have never seen them I know people who have and sometimes they are not there for a good purpose

Thank you for the info. My sincere apology for getting involved. I'm not in pain or suffering in any way because of my rare gifts which were given to me. I guess I don't belong here.

I say this through my own personal experience. The shadow people and the shades are two different entities. Their characteristics are similar. But they are not the same. Since we are talking about shadow people I will concentrate on that. Shadow people look like the name. They look like a shadow and move in like a wave. As to what draws them, it is your energy. They feed off of it like a psi vampyre would. Once they have found you they don't give up they will stay around and usually others of their kind will come and join in so to speak. They do not usually work solo, usually as a group.

The Shadows that I see sometimes happen at least once a month, never the same day, same time or same way. They don't threaten me, no do I feel threatened when I see them. I used to try to tell my husband about them, and he would look at me like I had just suddenly gone nuts, so I quit telling him when I see them. I do know that they happen to show up when my depression gets really bad, its like they are trying to tell me that there is someone there for me, whether in a good way or a bad way, I don't know.

The question, "Do Shadow People Exist" was asked on a ghost hunter friends forum a few days ago and we all agreed that they are real. Ask yourself this: If you have a group of 10 people in a room, and everyone in that room sees the same thing at the same time, there are no lights, no flashlights, no camera flashes, and nothing that would create a shadow anywhere, what could it possibly be? A figment of your imagination? Of everyone's imagination at that specific time?

You bring up a good point, can the minds of people coordinate and produce the same exact illusion without them trying?

Actually it is called mass hysteria, and it spreads through group think, since the average person accepts with less effort anything which comes from multiple sources, especially when they have a predisposition of bias. So all you need to do is to target a small audience with a suggestion, in the case of shadow people the "socket" to the current was Art Bell, and all it took was for people to actually see naturally occurring shadows, and misinterpret what they saw... or to outright fabricate their "encounter". So since the description is so generic, and the testimonies are so scripted it doesn't take much for people to jump on board.

Everyone has the capability of seeing things real or imagined. If we are in tune with things we are going to see more than the average person. And when we are depressed things show up to try to help us. Sometimes, we won't actually see them but, hear them talking to us.

i have seen shadow people. i have been seeing them since i was a very small child. some are benign - some are malignant. some appear as shadows on a wall, but there is nothing solid to cast the shadow. on occasion i have seen three dimensional shadows - that is, not cast upon a wall, but shadowy shapes that hang in the air as if they were real objects - but are insubstantial. on at least one occasion a three dimensional shadow being was seen by someone else in my presence, which would seem to rule out the suggestion that they are entirely subjective - unless you accept the existence of consensual hallucinations.

of course, sometimes they are just simulacra. for instance, one night a friend and i were sitting in the candle lit ruins of an old priory that was reputed to be haunted by a grey lady. then my friend noticed a flickering shadow on a wall, which he pointed out to me - the shadow of what looked like a nun bent in prayer. after a few minutes of staring at this it suddenly occurred to me that if there was an invisible figure between the candle and the wall, the shadow should be bigger than it was. then i noticed a gnarled branch just in front of the candle. by a staggering coincidence if the branch lay at a particular angle, the light from a candle would cast a shadow that looked exactly like a maiden praying.

Yes, I see Shadow People to. I see them everywhere, especially if I'm at my dad's and I'm outside in the backyard going out for a late night cigarette break. I've never talked to any of them before because they scare me. They watch me and I watch them as well. We never speak to each other, we just stare at each other, I also believe that one of them lives in my bedroom. Watching me sleep at night. It's wired.

I have not seen the shadow people but I heard them a lot in paranormal podcast shows. The guy that did Nightmare on Elm street encountered those two when he was a kid.

The thing about "supernatural" or "paranormal" encounters and events, is how do you get at any tangible source you can really test? What are valid test criteria?

Otherwise, how do you know it's not a product of your own brain chemicals acting up? The imagination and psychology of the human brain is capable of some pretty far out stuff apparently.

Well, it's the old solipsistic problem: how do you know you're not a "brain in a vat" that is imagining it all in some alien lab experiment or something? (e.g., The Matrix)

The answer is, you don't. Solipsism has no solution until there is some practical was to break through the alleged illusion, and until the veil is lifted, we have to take what experiences we are given to work with and treat them as real as they come. When predictions break down, we are into theoretical science at best, or perhaps some 'transcendental' unknown.

In some sense, whatever a person experiences is 'real' to that person in some way or another, but how do we define the real and establish what falls into that category?

Again, the solipsistic dilemma....

We don't really know what existence is, and while science does a fair job at "ordinary reality," it is muted in the face of "non-ordinary" reality, if such a thing 'really' exists. ( a pun to the point, which is that we don't have a good definition of reality)

I was reading a post about this over on Vampirefreaks, I know im such a traitor to VR lol, and there was a discussion on the subject of shadow people, relating to one persons experience. The person in question posted a photo of the phenomenom, which she/he managed to take. Now although to me, I considered it to be a very nicely put together piece of photoshop work, that is my opinion and not fact.

There does seem to be alot of people having witnessed and experienced this phenomenom, so I will keep an open mind for the time being.

To go only on anecdotes, and testimony makes one subject to people who are either outright fabricating their experience, elaborating (with bias) , or saw something anomalous enough (yet non-phenomenal) to lead them to a supernatural conclusion.

Dabbler, there are times I would like to beat you with a stick you are so predictable with your responses but you'd probably like it. :)

There is no evidence that people are nuts when they talk about these things. Even Monroe talked of similar entities in his OOBE studies (that is what they use to write but now OBE). We simply do not understand the nature of reality. So we can only go on anecdotes. I don't believe in demons and many things associated to organized religion but that doesn't mean I am right. It is a belief just like what others are stating. Saying someone is delusional is a belief and there is no more definitive information for that rationalization than for the belief. If one sees something the majority does not believe in people will make fun of them. If they talk to a religious person somehow it always ends up as something evil. There is no proof of that. People see shadow people when wide awake. In dreams, I would personally think that is something else. This is one of those topics that no one will agree upon like UFOs.

There is a simple way to test the sincerity of those who make such claims, and that is a polygraph test, I would think anyone who seriously witnessed such a thing would welcome a chance to substantiate their claim. In the majority of cases those who make such claims cringe at even the hint on scrutiny relating to their claims, and lets not be naive a percentage of any claims about the supernatural are fabricated.

i experience this frequently and usually when there is alot of stress in my life, its almost like unwanted spirit guides
