First let me say that I am in no way considered a scholarly person but I do like what most consider useless knowledge. ( Look at my library of books on my profile and you’ll see what I’m talking about.)
I look at things with a different point of view than most people, which sometimes make people laugh and sometimes offend. This is mainly to make people think of the possibilities don’t believe everyone else search for your own beliefs…these are my opinions.

My thought is “Why do people find vampires so hard to believe in a world that believes in “Immaculate Conception”?”

Just a thought: In church “wine” is considered the “blood” of Christ and is drank to be one with him and attain eternal life in his kingdom.
Jesus a vampire?

Vampire beliefs did not just pop up in the last couple hundred years and are not the imaginations of Bram Stohker or Lord Byron they were around much earlier. They did not just come to be from a couple good stories in the 1800’s.

I believe that if something is talked about and has stories across so many countries and from so many cultures there has to be some kind of truth behind it. Maybe we forgot. Maybe we were made to forget.

Revenant: attacked by a vampire, died and was buried and rose from the grave. The revenant is no longer alive and even though his blood was drained to the point of death by a vampire he has not turned to a vampire. ( They both share the same kind of feeding, bite and drain blood of the victims.)
There are people who claim the legends of the blood thirsty “revenants” originate in China of the sixth century B.C.

One of the first indications of the vampire myths was found in Persia (now Iran) and Morroco as early as the prehistoric period. A jar featured a picture of a man being chased by a monstrous creature that was trying to suck his blood.

The origin of the European vampire as we know it can be found in Ancient Greece. Drinking blood to gain vitality and strength appeared in the 11th book of Homer’s Odyssey, which was written in the 8th or 9th century B.C.,

Lilith---in one of the books of the Apocrypha (ancient texts that were not included in the old testament) was in fact the first woman created even before Eve. Lilith being disappointed with the sexual prowess of the first man, preferred to link up to the evil forces and become a demonic queen. The myth relates that she would drink the blood of infants and she would draw the virility out of young men while they were sleeping.

Striges---derived her name from the Latin word strix, a bird that drinks blood at night and is morphologically similar to ancient sirens. According to the myth Striges was a demonic woman with the body of a raven. She was in the habit of sucking the blood of infants and of drawing out the virility and vitality of sleeping men.

Lamiai---was the daughter of the ancient king Belus. She was the lover of Zeus and became the monster that devoured children or sucked their blood. Over the generations her name became synonymous with a witch or a demonic creature.

Empusai---was the daughter of the god Hecate and resembled a demonic creature with a bronze leg. Empusai would turn into a beautiful young woman in order to seduce men in their sleep. She is considered to be one of the most blood thirsty gods of Greek mythology.

To the point of what people believe... They would rather believe in anything or everything that is safe and rational to them. As long as it doesn't hurt them they won't believe in it. Let's see what else there is to add to the beliefs though.... The Italian Vampire or Stregoni Benefici.... Believed to be wealthy, they were against those that were evil.....

I beleive that vampires do exsist. And in the church when you "drink" the "blood" of christ, would that be considered vampirism?

Not everybody believes what the bible says, so not everyone would believe in vampires. As far as folklore is concerned, it's just that, it's not real. Vampirism in the context of drinking blood, is real. People have done it throughout history, whether for religious purposes, a mental disorder like Renfield's Disese, or as with many of those on this site (myself included) just a way to connect with someone.

So you could say that vampires do exsist, just don't expect to see any undead immortals with supernatural powers.

Well, believing in Christ is a religion, so it's somewhat different. Believing in vampires (the traditional sort, not psys or sanguines)is more akin to believing in dragons or unicorns. Personally, I think they all could exist, but it doesn't much matter, unless I actually meet one.

cannibalism is another proof, it lies in our psychy very deep within our primal instincts. is it so hard to believe that it is in every human? not awakened because of the curcumstances in their life? its the same reason why people hunt animals, some do it for the trophies, some for the meat. i believe the need to kill lies in us all, and in a civilized world its called manslaughter in the first if you do it to fellow man. the world advances and our genetic stew remains the same. and you all now how good that tastes!!!lol

Let them belive what they want.

It's not taht you're going to click your fingers and suddenly you'll open their mind.

Why you should care?

Just let them be.In a way it's an advantage that most people don't believe.

What if they would test you?So to bei n the closet is a BIG advantage since the world is still narrow minded.

On the other way in mass drinking the blood of Christ is a metaphor.Meaning that Christ shread is blood when he crucified to save people and give them life. That's it significance it has nothing to do with vampires!!!

As for the other things mentioned they're all legends no proof of them.

I beleive in the possibility of almost anything, vampires are one of them.

Firstly i loved the post.

Secound, i have to agree with some of the above posts.

People are not fully ready to accept vampirism in it's wholness. They have thier special little sanitized bubbles and thats how they want it to stay.

There may indeed come a time when people will realize that there are other beings besides the norm.

And by beings i mean Vampires, etc.
Also the jesus and wine thing is indeed very interesting and i think i'll do some more reseach on that topic.

Thanks for the great thread.

Vampirism still exists. Actual immortal, Dracula type vampires, I'm not so sure about. All legends have some truth to them. Tales of vampires have been around for thousands of years. It kind of makes you wish we had computers and digital cameras back then.

you have some very good points. the only problem is that vampires are so mediaised that people start to believe that they stories of the past are just stories. they don't think that any of it could have truly happened. they just believe what everyone else tells them to believe.

The following is an excerpt from a thesis on "The Myth of the Vampire".

"Does the vampire exist or not? He certainly cannot be viewed only as a mythological phenomenon. Logical explanations are in terms of scientific, social and psychological rather than mythological concepts. The lore of the vampire's ghoulish "habits" may be due to existence of parallel psychological phenomena having to do with actions of a living person toward the dead. These perversions include: necrophagism- eating the dead; necrosadism- receiving erotic satisfaction from mutilation of the dead; and necrophilia- achieving actual sexual intercourse with the dead. There are maniacs who possess the unnatural craving for blood. Due to the infancy of medical science, at the time when vampires were truly feared, people in coma or shock were often buried alive; those who managed to escape their premature graves were looked upon with awe because they had "returned."

Another type of vampire is the one who taps the psychic energy of another through fear perhaps, and thus drains them of the will to live. Another facet was the coincidence of plagues and the onset of vampire attacks. The vampire attacks were always considered an epidemic because anyone killed by a vampire became one, and the numbers increased in a rapid mathematical progression as did the victims of a plague. The vampire, then, is at least partially scientifically explainable."

Clearly, from the above conclusion, there remains a deep seated and misaligned concept of the vampyre in todays social mindset.

If a clearly capable student, in the midst of the learning process and having researched a range of material, can attribute necro-fetishism, murder and 'The Plague' as common traits of the vampyre, not to mention classifying those who drink blood as 'maniacs', it would seem that there is a long way to go in educating the mundane masses to more readily accept that this is merely a stereotype- though one which applies to a significant minority, by all accounts.

Whether vampyres exist or not is largely irrelevant at this stage, as the idea of the vampyre is still one which for the vast majority, is dark, dangerous and misrepresented in mass market media sources, leading to fear and revulsion.

Unless there are greater and more concerted efforts to counteract this image, which is being put forth by the 'educated' researchers who still base their opinions upon a narrowly defined range of legend, folklore and fiction, there can never truly be acceptance of the reality which some actually live.

yes, vampires do exist... i think that there is a lot of contreversy about vampires though.. and i do think that most ppl belive that vampires are somehitng other then they actualy are, because of what they see/read on televison/ movies from hollywood... i mean come on. hollywood makes vampires out to be these awful beasts/creatures of life... and u can kill them with light, holy water, garlic or steaks?! get real... then again this is just my opinion. but i am sticking to it.... they do exist. and ppl should do more reading and research on them before opening there mouths... *not meant to anyone on this site* mostly for hollywood.... thnx:)

yp my knowledge, the vampire myth did not originate from ancient greece. the first myths were reported to come from syria,or from the civilization of mesopotamia, which is said to be far older than ancient greece. i may be wrong about this, but i believe that as mythology goes, the ancient romans and greeks were fairly advanced in accepting myths such as this, but were by no means the first.

i would also like to add the the comparison to communion and vampirism is a very widely used, and very commonly misconstrued, theory. it truth,it could very well be true. but does ingesting wine, imagined to be the blod of christ, mean you're actually drinking his blood? if said wine is supposed to be impued with properties that christ wished us to bring into ourselves, are we physically or symbolically pulling it into ourselves? does it matter if there is a difference? i think so. it is a common practice,in magical traditions,to imbue substances with certain properties. empow rose oil,and pour it into your bath is said to attract love, empowering certain herbs and leaving them by the door is said to bring money into a household.laurel is said to have certain properties that ward away evil.even teas, made from certain infusions, with charged herbs, are said to bring awareness, clarity, even psychic dreams.

every ritual in every religion has ties to something else. easter, has links to ostara, which is a pagan holiday. the cross is not even a christian invention. the act of concecrating wine is not new,in the sense of being a christian practice. in drinking the wine, we are not drinking his actual blood, but wine, concecrated in his name. by drinking the blood,we are symbolically accepting christ to enter our very bodies,so we can become more christlike. i do not believe this makes us vampiric in nature, for to be vampiric, that wine would have to be imbued with christ's very life force. since christ has been dead 2000 years, that would be impossible. in my mind, christianity has nothing to do with vampirism, except for the fact that certain bible verses seem to hint at it at time. but a practice of drinking of wine, and as drinking the wine, drinking of his blood, seems to be a fairly foolish assumption. if christ believes in vampires, would we be so foolish to presume he would actually allow us to be taking into ourselves,a part of him? i believe,in the act of taking communion, the word is not taken in the literal sense. we are not communing with the holy spirit,we are not being imbued with a sacred power,or with properties to be taken into our bodies. i believe that the whole point of communion is not to draw into our bodies that which we aspire to be,but to bring us hope. what gesture, what imagined feeling could be better, than drinking sacred wine, and after words, the cleansing feeling, the feeling of hope,of renwed faith,as you can feel the divine seeping through our veins? we simply wish to feel, and hope to feel, and in hoping,we do feel it.

so as to answer the comment about holy communion, i don't believe it makes anyone vampiric, for vampirism is the practice of taking life force, not wishing to be imbued with the divine. in taking communion,we simply are hoping with that sip, with that bite, that we may ocme into contact with the divine. but nothing can substitue for true life force. the life force of a human,of a fragile, living being, filled with energy, filled with life and zest. taking into ourselves christ's blood symbolically is not the same.

Interesting point.

Scientifically a form of 'vampires' does exist. It has been proven that those who have a low blood count or are anaemic DO NEED a donor every day or so for them to drink blood. I read about a case where there was a lady and she needed a blood donor , and since her boyfriends blood matched with hers then he could 'feed' her blood!

Nice summary

All legends have some basis in fact at least according to Mr. Spock. Overtime legends become embellished. Supersitions arise around legends and on it goes.

Can anyone prove that a Vampire, a sun turn to dust vampire, doesn't exist. No. On the otherhand can one prove that they exist.

People will believe what they want to believe. Personally it doesn't matter to me, I have an open mind and will listen to others points of views, even if I don't believe in it. Unfortunately not everybody on this earth is like that. Hopefully oneday there will be more openmindedness over not.

Do people drink blood of others, absolutely, do fangs come from their mouth to do so, not necessarily. I have my convictions and opinions, I have my own thoughts. What ever idea that people believe is really up to them. I know, it is a vague answer, but it depends on if you are talking about someone who explodes from sunlight exposure, or someone that partakes in the drinking of blood for sustainment, pleasure, religious ceremony, or any other reason.

first off i dont believe in the "Immaculate Conception"...........the arch angel Gabriel was the true father of Jesus. this was how he gained his heavenly powers.

If you can find an un-edeited version of the bible you can find Lilith's name in it (ive seen it). Eve was Adams 3rd wife, his 2nd wife was never givin a name because adam saw how God created her and was scared to death and wouldnt go near her so like Lilith was kicked out of eden.

Lilith was kicked out of eden because she wanted to be adams equal and he couldnt deal with it so God kicked her out. she went into the world of man and mated with one of the fallen angles and thus created the nightwalkers or monsters if you will.

carlton999,

I don't ever recall seeing anything mentioned previously in any text or discussion of the subject, about Adam having a second wife turned out of Eden.

Perhaps you might provide some additional information on this please?

My personal opinion for why this occurs is the discussion which often occurs here at VR; The Dark and The Light.

The ancient element of Christianity gives a lot of consequential preconceptions, such as God being "good." This is in equilibrium with the old Slavic myths of vampires being the undead, which as a result creates the opinions of the ever dramatising and influential entertainment industry.

You have a very valid point, and one that deserves a lot of consideration into the systems and the attitudes of the world we live in. However, I feel that what you are doing here is letting the iconic status of belief systems cloud your judgement. I'm sure that there are a lot of Christians who read the Bible, but using their own beliefs and perspectives, don't believe in "immaculate conception." Likewise, I'm sure there are many people out there with vampiric practices and tendancies that don't believe they are a different species or anything of that nature.

I believe in vampires. I don't believe they are anything like the vampires depicted in movies and books. but of course I believe in most "mythological creatures." like chupacabras people tend to think Im an idiot but if there is no proof either way then I dont really think thats grounds to be an idiot. Kinda like with "god" can anyone actually prove he/she exists? Can anyone disprove it? not really and people believe no less. Im not trying to compare believing in vampires to faith in god but I guess its coming out that way. all over the world through out history there have been stories about vampires and such. It all had to stem from some sort of truth

When I mention "Vampires" in this post I"m referring to the mythological sense.

I don't think people don't believe in vampires because they are dumb, they must believe only in safe things, or they are told too ect ect as people are inferring. We live in a world where a vast majority of people never see anything "supernatural", and science rules. There is no reason for them to believe vampires are anything more then myth, along with dragons, werewolves, unicorns, orcs and other mythological creatures. I also think insulting these people for not believing it, and calling them narrowminded in essense, is well - narrow minded. Each of you that does believe it has a personal reason for that - you've seen something, you really want it to exist, you've been privaleged with information others don't have, and most here obviously have a general affinity for the entire topic.

I do not personally believe in them (the myth type). Also - I seriously doubt that all myth is based even loosely on fact - many myths came about as a way of explaining something that people couldn't explain thousands of years ago - and then as it got passed down it evolved into the complex myths that eventually became religions and bedside stories.

Vampires aren't real. People who drink blood are not vampires. Vampirism is not a religion. People who have iron deficiency are not vampires. People with blood disorders, diseases, etc are not vampires.

People say "don't believe the myth portrayed by stories or hollywood", that's JUST IT. It's myth, it's folklore.

We have realized that there were lots of things in the past that we were wrong about. Hell, anyone ever hear of spontaneous generation? This is along the origins of folklore, fairytales, etc.

I bet most people don't even know what stakes were used for. "vampires" wouldn't burst into flames or turn into ashes, it was a way of pinning them to the ground. this way they couldn't rise from their grave and feed again. Of course we found out we were morons for believing in such stuff.

One last thing, it makes me laugh so hard when vampire enthusiasts use the wrong spelling of the word "stake".

"no, a steak can't kill him, unless he's a faithful vegetarian".

Forgot two things: vampires were symbolized as anti-christian. Offering eternal life in ANOTHER way besides the christian way would be something to expect.

Psy vampires are only referred to as "psy vampires" because of how they work.

They aren't immortal, they aren't able to fly or have any connection with the real 'vampires'. It's only because they 'drain energy' which is like 'draining blood'.

If psychic vampirism is real, I would more classify it with something spiritual or chi instead of something with fangs.

If they exist or not is a mystery and finding an answer to such a question would be pretty much impossible I think as its all based on belief, and if vampires do exist I highly doubt they would be drawing attention to themselves.

As for the jesus and the blood, I made the same argument to my parents when I was younger when I was forced to attend church. However, now that I think about it.. its not necessarily connected with vampirism. Chrisitanity wanted to emphasis the sacrifice Jesus made for us, and by using wine to symbolise blood it is reminding people that he sacrificed his life. Its a powerful symbol as people see blood as a lifeforce and I think it was merely a clever choice in symbols rather than hinting at anything darker. Nevertheless, thats only my interpretation.

Vampires have always been a symbol of anti-christian ways. Holy water and crucifixes are weapons against them in folklore.

Blood also has been a powerful symbol in life. It's "life essence" basically.

For vampires to fit their anti-christian characteristics to the fullest, it would make sense to involve blood and everlasting unlife.

Hellsphreak,

Hemophiliacs don't need a fresh intake of blood to survive. Hemophilia is a disorder of the blood with three major variations, all of which amount to the same thing. Their blood won't coagulate, so much like sufferers of sickle cell anemia they have to be very careful to avoid injury because they can't stop bleeding on their own. One of the three forms of hemophilia also leads to weakening of blood vessels and internal bleeding if not properly treated and kept in check. So hemophiliacs only need a transfusion if they've had internal bleeding or been injured. I hope that clarifies things a bit.

I personally don't believe in vampires. Are there people that drink blood? Yes...it's called Blood Fetishism. Are there people that drain energy from others? I believe so...but I believe that every person has the capability to do so if open minded to the possibility. I laugh at people who say, "Canabalists exsist, so why not vampires too?" Canabalists are NOT mythical "creatures", they are humans who eat other humans(or with any species...such as cats who eat cats, etc.). Vampires are things of myth...created and embellished over centuries upon centuries of story telling. And until I see a real "life" undead vampire who drinks blood to survive(etc.)...I will continue on with my beliefs as they now are pertaining to vampires.

and again i may recieve ridicule for this. but for christ's sake seeing the bloody facts can't it be obvious that vampires do physically exist??
any other scientific case on earth is proven as correct theory and fact , with only half so much evidence presenting itself, it is merely more obvious that vampire kind has become far more stealthy in society due to human advances in science and genetics, for if an actual specimen or blood sample was obtained then there could be no doubt any more and no resigning this otherly obvious race to mere fictions

I wonder, why it is so hard for people to believe in vampires and things that go bump in the night yet the thought of angels and and faeries are in everyones mind. If such things as angels and faeries and all creatures that are good exist why not creatures of the night? Too many people are close minded and only want to believe in good and hollywood has made vampires to be evil creatures of the night that no one wants to believe in as it doesnt fit into their perfect "programmed" world.

Before this thread expires, and I get tossed off this site like so many others which do not understand the points i attempt to make, please allow a small disertation on my part to add to the wealth of information provided herein.

Being that nature itself is sustained upon the shifting energies, rot, decay, seeds, etc...humans eating food, digesting it, and the waste that is generated. Being a vampire, in classical terms, is a state that i believe is possible to attain, but if one wants to look at the nature of vampirism as "the consuming of one thing to sustain another". Everything but the primal source (to which i will say is darkness, as darkness needs not to sustain itself, whereas light does). It is such, that vampirism, should be more specified in its field, because anything that sustains itself by consuming something, would it seems fall into this catagory. But then again, it goes back to how much would you be willing to shift yourself, to suspend death? I know some that would go to any extent they could find....

But, people do beleive in vampires because of all the stories, books, films that have been made, and basically there own thoughts. I do beleive that vampires do/did exist because if they didnt then why would people keep making films, books, carttons, programmes that are based on vampires?

Vampires exist. apeople are vampires but dont realise it. Some people like rare bloody steaks. Drink their own blood when they cut themsleves. The wine and bread in christian churches, although they wont admit to it. Bloody Marys, it looks like blood, a fascination of people, but they say it has nothing to do with that. Biting during sex, a form of canniblelism. There are many other example. Read this, message me, I'll come back.

"Just a thought: In church “wine” is considered the “blood” of Christ and is drank to be one with him and attain eternal life in his kingdom.
Jesus a vampire?"

I am not sure that I ever read that he drank of the covenant. Did he drink at the last supper or only offer it up. As a metaphor of course. Do you suppose that is where they got "The blood is the life" And what is with all those animal sacrifices in the Old Testament? What when washed in the sons blood we do not need the blood of animals any longer?

Very well done, and If one believes in the bible, then they would have to believe in vampires. Beings it talks about Judas becoming one.

i dont know if i would say everyone has a little bit of vampire in them
but i would say that i think a lot of the population has some sort of tendency that is related to it.

and in general
people just dont like to think outside the box.. which is stupid but its how things are.

They do exist... it is just really a question to want extent. I am sure there is not a single one out that is anything like most of the movie vampires we see today. But then again some people would "appear" to be more so then others.

As a Catholic *cough*lapsed*cough*, I can tell you that the whole cannibalizing Jesus thing is more symbolic than literal. There are lots of people, though, who do believe that it literally becomes the blood of Christ and the flesh of Him as well.
The question you pose is, to me, a question of idea versus belief. I can believe that the wine becomes blood, but on what grounds? I don't believe anyone's taken a blessed cup of wine to a lab and had it tested. It's faith. So, yes, for people who believe such things, I would raise an eyebrow at them for saying vampires don't exist. It's a much more out there thing (same concept, but wine to blood versus a completely different species of being...yeah...it's a little more difficult to believe), but like I said...to believe that vampires exist without proof would take faith, and...

Jack: Seriously, why waste faith on the blessing of the sacraments when you can use it on vampires?

Elroy: Uhhh...

Jack: Yeah man, people fling their faith around like it ain't no thang...

Susannah: *mumbling* white boy...

Jack: ...and waste it on nice safe Jesus stuff! Vampires are so much more exciting.

Elroy: You don't need vampires to spice up your imagination, Jack.

Jack: But seriously! If I believed in vampires, one could get me at any time! I'd have to be on the watch 24/7! Wear garlic around my neck!

Susannah: Or, wear a cross around your neck, and be on constant watch for the devil's influence?

Jack: Oh yeah...I guess that could be exciting. Kind of.

InsertFavoriteDiety: BACK IN YOUR BOX!!!!

....Uh....sorry about that....

Anyway...I was saying...what was I saying?

did you know that rhode island was known as little transivana (sp sorry) because of all the cases of "vampires". men of the church, and family men were digging and dismembering dozens of corpses as they guessed who the vampire might be.

however i do like to hope that vampires are real as much as anyone on this site.

there are a few places that have made some christans believe that drinking blood makes you more godly. that it was the "forbidden fruit" of adam and eve's garden of edan.

Well, In my opinion vampirism comes from legend. It was a human that started the whole vampire thing.

their existance i believe is unquestionable but to see them interact with the human race as it is today i think would lower their dominance in the flow of life

How do you come up with "unquestionable" when talking about traditiona mythological vampires? I can be ok with people believing in them, and offering reasons why, but I can't get behind 'unquestionable" like it's simply a fact.

I should probably rephrase so I don't sound so rude - that wasn't my intention.

I don't believe in immortal holywood style vampires. I believe there are people out there that practice vampirism, and that is about as far as my believe goes.

I don't mind someone else believing differently, or having different opinions as long as they aren't assanine, but the problem I do have is in the wording where you make it sound "without a doubt" when obviously there is doubt.

Haha...I would say you don't have to be so polite, Vulash, but then, I've offended people before...

Jack: What a nice, civilized world we live in. Let's all drink tea and eat some scones, and have polite debates where nobody is passionate.

Susannah: Well we are drinking tea.

Jack: Shut up.
