Christianity has been one of the worlds main religion for over 2000 years. Now, as with every religion, secrets are being revealed and an uprising of older religions seem to be arising. It seems like in these times it is more acceptable to voice your personal beliefs even if they are not mainstream religions. With all the new evidence that is arising with the Vatican and the bible. The lost texts and what not, does anyone feel that Christianity may be on it's way out or to the back burner of what is considered "mainstream religion" I have noticed that there are more and more pagans/wiccans lately coming out and professing their beliefs. Do you feel that there may be a new "Holy War" so to speak with all that is going on with mixed views and different religious sects interpreting religion there own way?

to say you aren't into religion is kind of two-sided. If you are Wiccan, then that is the religion you follow. Wicca isn't just a word. It's a way of life and a way of worship, if you are really into Wicca. But that's what I mean, more people are not following mainstream religion. They are chosing an older path to follow. And I'm speaking more of Pagans than Wiccan's. Wicca has been around a mere few decades

Christianity, as long as it's leaders try to maintain what power the do have, I highly doubt it will ever be anything but at the forefront of all religions. To say that a main religion like that is going to die out is just a little stupid. Wicca, and such pagan religions have been around longer then Christianity, but they have never had the popularity or the numbers to be considered a main religion.

And I've found that a lot of these "Wiccans" of today are just into it because it's the cool thing to do. It seems like it's the perfect teen religion, something to use to piss your parents off.

But there was a time when Rome believed they would rule forever. And it may be a little "stupid" immortalkiss, but there was a time when they said Woman voting was stupid and would never happen. I'm in no way saying it will happen any time soon. But I feel that with every religion that seems to be popping up, there is ALWAYS a chance and time for change. And the reason Christianity took such a big lead was because they had the fear of death if they didn't convert...so it was more of a long term brainwash. Pretty much I see it as "If you don't follow Christianity, you will die and burn in hell" or "they'll kill you if you aren't christian"

Yes and I always heard that there are lots of books hidden in the Vatican when there is written the ''truth.''

Whatever it can happen it won't affect me.

I chose not to believe and follow any religion and very happy this way.

Who is right and who is wrong I wouldn't care less as far as I'm let to live the way I want to live.

I don’t think there is a holy war so to speak going on, I think its as you say it is more acceptable to voice your beliefs nowadays without fear of being burned or drowned. With today’s multicultural societies it would be foolish for any government to try and limit or control how the public wish to follow there beliefs and as countries grow and become mixed, knowledge of other religions is brought with it making it easier for people to make informed choices on how they live.

I know that some people consider the war we are in now a holy war. If you can hear it in the US president's re-election speech, you hear it many other ways.

Has it been said by the US that the war about religion - NO. But the politicians behind it use their beliefs/morals in the offices they hold. Certainly some of the radicals in the war against terror, view this as a religious calling and potentially a religious war. Personally it is all distasteful to me.

As for a change in the winds of religion, that is always occurring. Look at the changes in Christianity just in the past 30 years. There have been some BIG ones. Mary Magdalene is no longer a prostitute (as accepted by the church), use of contraceptives (not in all sects) is not a big no-no, and on and on.

Religion is not a set thing. People tend to look at it as one, but it does "ebb and flow" if you would. You have to step back from being in a religion sometimes to see it, but it is not static. The ones that become static are the ones that don't survive.

Will Wicca or Paganism take over if Christianity fell, doubtful. The more likely aspect is the Christianity would take on other traditions/aspects of whatever religion started to gain more power. Very similar to how it came into power in Rome. To this day it is hard for some people not trained in the different religions to see what is Christian, and what is Pagan. The line has already blurred- look for that to happen again.

I'm not saying governments, but you are right. They wouldn'y SAY they are starting a war for religion, they would claim weapons of mass destruction. I believe that it will be more of a slow pushing out of the whol;e Christianity faith. Kind of like the way Christianity push Paganism out of the way and assimilated many pagan beliefs. Today there stands 13 obelisk's in the Vatican that are inscribed with pagan runes and symbols. I feel all this will come out further and the Catholic church might be seen for the hypocrites they seem to be.

I don't think there will be a "holy war". It's natural for new religions and beliefs to come into existance or come out of "the closet". Christianity is losing it's power over the masses so more people are revealing their beliefs. After all, the "moral majority" is becoming more of a "moral minority" as the years go by. Which I think shows that the churches power over how we believe is declining, therefore truly allowing us our "freedom of religion".

And you can have morals without or without Christianity. There are plenty of moral spiritualities.

At the same time that the Catholic church is being revealed for all its "mistakes", other Christian religions are also becoming stronger. I don't think that Christianity as a whole will ever completely die out, but it is very true that the times are changing. It seems like the harder certain factors try to discredit or suppress some religions, the stonger the believers fight for their beliefs.

Christians will always exist.

Gibbon, in the decline and fall of the Roman Empire, says the late antique world developed a fear of the supernatural, was full of meaningless rituals, and mystery religions. When you daren't question anything or change anything, that destroys religion. Exhaustion and the feeling of hopelessness.

Christianity and Islam supplanted ancient religion because they possess vigor, energy, vitality - the weight of energy behind it. Christianity still reinvents itself every generation. I would like Christianity include other books. My view is the Gospel of Thomas is historically as valid as the other gospels.

In most "developed" (I don't like that term, but meh) countries there is a wonderfull rule that states you can pick your own religon. I think that there are changes ahead for many "traditional" religons (acctually I'm part Catholic and the church I go to is one of the ones who are incredilbly liberal, we piss of the Archdiosis at least once or twice a year), but that doesn't mean they die out.

As for Wiccan and Paganism being older, I have to disagree. Many aspects of Wicca and Paganism are older, but the religon its self was not official untill 1950's when Alistor Crowly started its remergence.

Also, before they were were Christians, the first belivers were Jewish, a very old religon.

Ok, I'll get off the soap box.

Avtually, they instilled the fear of death to any and all who decided they would chose their own religious path. They would slaughter and kill the person(s) and families. As The Islamic STILL does to this day. To say you are going to convert is a capital offense and punishable by death. Only ONE man has beaten that, and ONLY because America took a notice. there is no such thing as seperation between state and religion, they are one in the same. Which gives them more power to intimidate to impose there religious beliefs.

I personaly do not belive or follow any religion.
But everyone is entitled to their own point of veiw and i respect that, i never have said that any religion is wrong because anything is possible. All religions have different ways of worshiping 'god' or 'satan' or whatever leader they might have.
If a 'religious war' did happen, it would be quite pathetic and wouldn't it be against some religions? To try and prove someones religion wrong seems pathetic to me, but not impossible.
It could happen, but then peoples freedom to express their religious belives would be gone, which would just be pathetic.
Why can't all religions just respect the fact that everyone is different, therefore have different belifes?
Religion has acctualy cause wars in countries, such as Ierland (catholics and prodastants (sp?)
Religion causes arguments this is wrong, but everyone should have their own opinion.

I an just glad that more and more people are discovering for themselves what they believe no matter what it is. Noone should let another spoonfed them on what is truth, whether it be religion or anything else. I say question all assumptions. I do not think we are in a holy war over this. I think the ideas that will stand the test of time will always be around and that new schools of thought will be added.

Look at the christmas tree, eggs for easter etc... Long list there the church did this to assimilate the locals into the church............I used to worry about a holy war when I was wiccan, but I also worried that some idiot in the white house would push the damn button..
Now I don't waste my energy on that I focus and use what talents I have been granted for use in a positive way not in worry which seems to deplete my reserves

as to if there is a holy war going on ????? your guess is as good as mine ....all i can add is the facts that 6 of every 10 graves in the war on terrorism is currently marked by a cross, 2 of every ten is marked by the cresent and 1 inevery 10 is marked by the star of david, and a further 1 in 10 marked by other means. this just one more thing the media does not go into... must of us are led to belive that if a middle eastern country has a bomb go of to-day then we auto maticaly assume that it is those under the cressent that have died, not so it seems by the grave figures that the targets are selected to purposly kill a certain type of persons.

fact above can be checked by any one willing to look into the figures.

cheers

You know I'm doubtful that any war previous or coming could ever be considered a real "holy war" when you look at the roots and causes of them, the real culprit has always been political power under the guise of religion. If Christianity were to pass away (which I highly doubt to happen any time soon) the current christian leaders (popes, ministers, reverends, etca) would simply find a new religion or stick to beat their followers into submission with. I believe the same would hold true for islam (or any relgion were they to have the sway that christianity or islam currently enjoys).

Religion is at best a personal thing (or with me a NOthing)...as soon as it becomes organized and takes on a popular status, it gets abused and warped to the point that it hardly resembles the religion of its origins.

I don't mean to sound like a know it all but this statement is untrue. Paganism is much older than the 1950's. Paganism was around before Christianity. Pagans were slaughtered for not converting to Christianity during medieval times. Wicca, on the other hand, was founded by Gerald Gardner in the early 1950's. Even though Wicca does follow a lot of the ancient teachings, the actual organization of Wicca is not ancient at all.

Your right Theban, not all Pagans are Witch's but not all Wiccan's are either Pagan or a Witch. Yes you can be all of them, but you can also only be Pagan, Wiccan or a Witch. There are things that differentiate each of them.

Witch - A witch is someone who practices witchcraft (either male or female), regardless of their religious standing. Not necessarily the same thing as a Wiccan (someone who follows the religion of Wicca)

Wiccan - Someone who follows the religion of Wicca. May or may not also be a witch.

Wicca - Wicca is a peaceful, Earth-honouring, polytheistic religion that has no connection whatsoever to Satanism. It was founded by Gerald Gardner in the 1950s and is a mixture of reconstructed Pagan beliefs and more modern ceremonial magick practices.

Pagan - Refers to any of the pre-Christian, (usually) polytheistic religions, or those who practice them. Wicca is one Pagan religion, as is Asatru, Santeria, Voodoo, or Shamanism. Pagan religions are often referred to as "nature-oriented" but that is a misconception. It is difficult to define Pagan religions because they are very diverse.

Some feel that Wicca and Witchcraft are the same thing, some do not. My own thoughts are that Wicca is a religion, whereas Witchcraft is simply the act of doing magick without the spiritual overtones. There are large overlaps between the two (namely that all Wiccans pratice witchcraft) which adds to the confusion.

This is true, the Witch hunts had nothing to do with religion. They had to do with power which resulted in money. If someone wanted your land, they accused you of being a witch. If a woman wanted a man, she accused his wife of being a witch and vice versa. Unfortunately it worked too well and many people died because of it.

The Wiccan religion as it is today started in the 50's nothing was said abut it not coming from a pagan base it does come from earlier pagan beliefs but those beliefs were taught mother to daughter father to son in an oral tradition like the native american's....BOS's werent passed out for the general public to obtain...I know of hereditary witches even to this day but they still pass what they know only within there families.........

I personally beleive that all religions will always flourish. I do see a big trend in others turning to paganism but christianity will never die off as well as the other religions. I am into the ancient craft and the religious traditions it comes about. As for a holy war, between all religious ways of different cultures, it will never die off and there will always be controversy regarding all religions.

one of my biggest thoughts on religion has always been.....how do we know that the old way wasn't the right way?

Christianity is all supposedly based on the bible which is translated from its original languages to one language...you ALWAYS lose something in doing this.

My ex father in law used to goto school to be a priest....he said he left it do to, too many contradictions (although he would not go in depth as to what)

I believe we should believe what we want and as long as we try to be decent to each other it is good....

Witch hunts and inquisitions were about power. Both in establishing the power of the church by removing 'pagan' competition and establishing the power of the patriarchal society (man over woman) by removing the midwives as respected and valued members of the community and making them witches to make way for the male (though at the time worthless) doctors.

Raven - I'd be hesitant to include Santeria and Voodoo in the pagan bundle since, if I'm not mistaken, both rely heavily on Christian/Catholic saints in their practice. I believe they were a combination of the 'shaman' practices of Africa and the christian practices of their European conquerers.

Mercury - Christianity seems to actually have a lot of the old religions in it. I'm not just talking about the catholic saints and practices being pagan but even the story of Jesus (one man discovering truth and then being persecuted and sacrificed for it) is frighteningly similar to other prophets (Zorastrianism for one) and even similar to the stories of many pagan god myths where one god is sacrificed to make way for mankind or life. I still think that Christianity (regardless of it's original intentions) became something of a tool for political power as with any large scale popular religion and because it has had to evolve to keep that power, you end up with contradictions as it changes.

Darkspirt13 - depending on your religion and your sect within that religion, hell will mean many different things...just within christianity, it can be anything from not waking up (simple death), to absence from Gods grace (banishment), to life on a destroyed earth (post armageddon), to a fiery pit of dispair and hellfire, to your own vision made real. The bible (a generally vague book filled with symbolism), whether it is looked at metaphorically, literally or superliterally, would be the main reason for all the difference of opinion.

Right what next...oh yes...money and power of course this was done...in the name of christianty..religion...the humble man who was orderd to kill the pagens wouldnt of been able to read or write...he would of been killing in the NAME of his god...he would of been a christian..he would of been doing what Pope Innocent VIII had orderd all his followers to do!!
To hunt down and destroy all Pagens, and the pagen tradition...They even destroyed whole villages in the NAME of christianity!!
Then came Pope Gregory who ordered that all the temples and any place of worship be destroyed...many churches have been built on these sites.
But it all started much much earlier than this...as if you will all know,if you have heard of the Pharaoh Akienhotep...who started christianity..as me and many others believe....oh and funny enough..if you didnt change to his new religion..then you met a nasty death.

I agree with Images` that it isn't on the Back burner In fact In my state WICCA~~ has been declared as a Religion and recognise as such and can have churches and groups, ETC.... So, I think people are just accepting that there are other "RELIGIONS" out there and as a free nation they can not stop you from worshipping how you choose ~~UNLESS~~ yo break the law, like human sacrifices, ETC.. Just some food for thought~~~

Biten- funny enough though, the military still hasn't recognized the pentacle as a legitimate symbol for graves in a military cemetary...and the president here in the US has been quoted as saying that he didn't think 'witchcraft' should be a recognized religion when asked about Wicca...so there's still plenty of ignorant powerful people who don't want to recognize pagan or wiccan religions.

I had a whole bunch to say, but my twin sister Rayvn said it all very well. The only thing I have to say is that I have never heard Pagans called Christians before. I have heard Satanist called Christians and that is because you need God to have Satan. Satan is a Christian precept.

However Pagan is a religion with out Christ the lord. It was around before the birth of Christ ergo. not Christian.

I've never heard of Catholics referred to as pagans...not by Catholics anyway. Admittedly, the majority of saints in Catholicism are based on 'adopted' (though more like covered up) pagan gods and goddesses. It was their way of shutting down druid teachings in the what was called the Dark Age of Britain and it's believed that even the sacrement and the adoration of the cross were originally pagan principles (just not related to Jesus)...

That all being said, I don't believe that the Catholics themselves have really stepped up and accepted this.

No Catholics have not and probably will never admit or accept that they too fall under the definition of pagan. Or that the ones that they worship all started out as pagan Gods or Goddesses. Look at Brigit/Brighid/Brigid. One of the most revered Celtic Goddesses but also a Saint.

As are:
St. Anne = the Celtic water goddess Anu
St. Brenden = Celtic god Bran the blessed
St. Corneille = the forest god Kernunnos

Interestingly enough that last one St. Corneille is a double whammy. Because Kernunnos is the cloven hoofed and antlered god that visually became the "devil" so the Catholic saint and their Lucifer were one in the same (originally speaking).

D'oh!
I've no idea what wicca is . I've not seen it mentioned in movies , newspapers and such , before 1970 or so . Although it may be new as a main religion , of course there may be witches who have followed that 'path' over the ages . Or it could be that wicca was simply inspired by those witches , and is not millenia old . I , personally , hope christianity burns down to the ground merely so I can be in the heat of battle . Lieterally . The churches would have to be destroyed in order to make other temples to [me ;)] the top religion in that area .
Now don't forget : Worship ME

Please refrain from making fun. We are trying to have a serious conversation here.

FelixFelix:

I'm sure we could go on all day with listing Gods or Goddesses that have been sainted. It was just another way for the Christians to "ease the transition from Paganism to Christianity". Much like keeping the holidays on similar dates.

My personal beliefs is that there is not so much a holy war, as their is a monitary one. In the times of Christ (whom I fully beleive in, as there is historical references to, though he was jsut a man) church was not a building where you went and prayed and payed, but a gathering of people, who were outdoors or in a home or wherever and gathered with the soul purpose to revere the lord. I beleive that there are teachings and writings decepting this that various organizations are hiding, in order to continue to profit off of. think about it, if the churches started to loose money made by offering and donation, in favor of 'old time' religion, do yuo think that the preachers would be able to afford 40k cars? Yeah.

Holy wars are always about money and power. Those that have the power have the money. Those that have the money have the power. What I know of other religions, they would fall without power and money. I think they have completely lost site of the actual religion. There are those few small churches that keep the religion their top priority but there are so many others that don't. I don't know about you but I haven't figured out why a church needs to be the size of a football stadium with a mall and food court in it. That would seem to distract from the worship IMHO.

Raven- I don't think the christians (early catholics) were trying to 'ease into' anything. The Dark Age of Britain was a bloody time period that showed a deliberate attempt to wipe druids off the face of the earth. The Battle of the Trees was by no means a subtle nor solitary point in the history of christianity's war on the pagan religions. I understand you might not have meant it so literally as an easy situation but it should be remembered that from the earliest times, christianity has sought to impose it's belief system on the world's people and that subterfuge like the sainting process was usually used only when bloody battle and outright genocide failed.

Understood...Thanks
Interesting side note though is that some of the transferrance of gods and goddesses may have been done by the pagans themselves as a means of continuing to practice their beliefs under the cover of 'monastic work'. I point to the ironic history of a 'celtic monastary' erected on the Isle of Iona (563AD) where many of the druids had gone into hiding. It's almost too convenient neh? So I believe that some of the conversion was a way to create learning centers (abbeses and monestaries) where druids would be safe to continue their studies.

I agree 100%. They did the same with the churches and monasteries that the Christians forced them to build for worship. There is tons of evidence of Gods and Goddesses within the architecture of those buildings. The Pagans were able to incorporate Pagan symbols and deities into the buildings and continued to worship as they always had right under the Christians noses.

Being more of a spiritualist rather than into religion i wont knock anyone for their belief as it is up to each individual to find their own ways and beliefs. Religion is suppose to be about finding god in ur heart or whatever god u believe in and not in words. So why listen and follow like sheep, instead of finding ur own ways? Hope this sheds some light on my feelings.

Nowadays religion is nothing more then a fad to people, much like the clothes they wear. That’s why I try to stay out of it all though I must say that I lean more to Christianity then anything else and that is only cause I grew up with it. Yet I am very open minded to all of them, more or less I pick and chouse what to believe and what not to believe in every religion that I learn about. But back to what I was saying…like everything else in this world, it has it’s time to shine brighter then everything else and then it will start to dim though I doubt any religion will truly fad away all together.

I think it's specifically because people pick and choose parts of religion that it has become like fashion...a fad. I don't see how someone can choose to believe in some parts of the bible but not the whole thing.

Personally, I'm not inclined to believe the written word of religions any further than I can throw their heavy ill used books. That doesn't however mean that I understand a 'believer' who only believes in half the book. That sense of religion a la carte is what gives these leaders the ability to still appeal to a 'flock' when much of standard religion involves prejudice and hatred and yes violence on behalf of one god or another. People can choose to ignore one part of a religion (responsibility or social progressiveness) but jump to their 'good book' when they need support for their hatred.

first of alll the world you live is growing in population, and so are alll religeon but the note i want to speak about is that, what you seek is what you find, if you seek wicans and witches you will find, if you see the christians you willl find, if you seek boudism you willl find, and alll that you willl find in great quantity, according to your search. search welll and you willl see.

and about the war, i do not think something like that would happen, cause the world can not hold a war, especially religeous war, come to my country and see it alll happen here we are in a religeous war, i come from a country that has alll type of religeon, from christians, to muslems to buda, to devil worshipers....and christians in allll it's sects, muslem in alll it's sects.....need i speak more.... come and see how they are trying to turn it off....the war is hard....

You should also keep in mind all the 'lost' books of the bible, the ones that the Catholic church origionally deemed unworthy of the Bible. most of them were destroyed, sadly.
