A question I have been pondering for quite some time now.

The purpose of life....

Why are we all here? We have to be here for some reason, wether it be to keep the rest of the universe in balance, just to live our lives, and say on our deathbed, "I finally made it."

So the question I pose to you all is the same as the thread title: Why are we here?

I'm quite interested in everyone's opinions, but please, don't say something along the lines of, "I don't know, but I'm glad I'm here." or something like that, as it will get the thread RIA'd, and as I said earlier, I want to hear what everyone has to say. Thanks. :)

As for me, I'll post why I think I'm here when I don't feel so lazy. :P

I think that the meaning of life is to live
sounds kinda stupid but thats what i think about that.

Then what happens to those that don't truly live?

There are as many opinions to why we are on planet earth as there are stars in the sky. I like to think our existence is related to all other life forms and their existence. We are here to help each other and to serve a purpose whether it is great or small.

The universe has not been completely explored nor it it completely understood. The meaning of life has been pondered by far greater philosophers than me. Each had their own opinion and each gave their understanding of the subject as well as they could.

So say that one moment, a person/animal/whatevers soul is there there, and the next moment, poof, it might as well not have even previously existed. What do you think would happen then?

i think we all just should hope we are here for some sort of reason, because if not, why the hell would anyone want to put up with all the miserable things life brings,

Trech has a point. Whether you believe in a higher power or not, lets all hope we are here for some reason. If not, the bad things that we put up with were all for nothing.

I could write a almost endless list of all the different reasons on all the different levels and layers of why we are here...But each must look deep into their own mind to find their own answers to this question...Or for the simplest of all answers...We are all here to do, what we are all here to do...Everyone has a purpose and their purpose...Clear your mind and look deep, you will eventually find the Truth, within yourself...

i think were all here for reasons why did god make the earth so he can make better changes for others and so if we sin we what go to hell if were good we go to heaven life is based on good and evil all kinds of things happen in reality we dont want to happen i think life is based on one big puzzle you have to figure it out yourself and follow around like a cat playing with a ball of yarn eh... but thats my opinon. is like a balance of good and evil which side would you choose?

I dont know myself but i think very logically sometimes to much into deep thoughts about why we are here, i also believe in reincarntation life after death.

Personally, I feel we can't exist if this universe is missing even the tiniest, most insignifigant part.

Kind of like movies where each character plays off onto another persons life, and so on. I think we're all here because we impact everything else in this universe, no matter how small or large it may be, and without that one tiny iota of being there, everything else will eventually, if not immediatly, crumble into nothingness.

We are here to learn and grow in knowledge, to become more bound as a race,(humain)to somehow undertand each other. Since we all have the same in us, blood flesh. we all eat in the same hole and we let out the same way, so we live to be filled wiht memories, to care for tohers and to be cared about. We were not meant ot die because when we do alot fight to live without even knowing why its in our gene to want to live. We are made for that, many live for the fullest others just look at life goes by, but no one can denie the fact that living itself is a wonder.

Life and death have always been a huge confusion and amazment to me. I think maybe we're all here to prove ourselves strong...Life throws shit at us...And if we can stand it we get rewarded, the reward is death. Who knows, maybe something so amazing our minds can't comprehend it lies after death to those who made great happen....

So it is a possibility then, that if we 'fail' at life, then we do not receive death?

I'm not sure why we are here. But we all have a purpose in life and the hardest thing in life is finding out what your purpose is.

Wow, what a great thread to make people search their brains....personally I think that we are just here by luck and what you do with your life is what you do with your life, you don't get another shot at it. If our parents hadn't decided to conceive then we would never have existed to be pissed off that we don't exist. I don't really believe that we go to "a better place" when we die. I think some of us just die, and others of us just stick around in the paranormal world. Not much of a theory I know, but it works for me.

I believe we all have our certain purpose here on earth. whether it be to reprocreate or to learn our life's mistakes and correct them with each passing year. either as one human to our next life till we have perfected it all.

There was a time I thought I knew, being religious, and also times I tried very hard to come to a realization. I finally did, and it was this. I realized I will never know why we are here, or for what purpose - so instead I just choose to *try* to live my life in the manner that best suits my ideas on a life I'll be proud of with the least regrets before I die. In other words I'm just trying to be happy, and make others around me happier for having known me.

I guess I'm really taking the easy way out - refusing to think to much about it. But in a way it's a much less stressful existence not trying to figure out something that isn't possible to figure out, and not letting it eat at me.

Perhaps the purpose of our existence, is whatever we decide it to be, each person here for their own reason, living day by day, choosing who and what to believe in, how they choose to go about their lives, and who they decide to place impact on.

if i have ten difrent colors of paint and i wonted to put all the veriuose difrent combernations of the mixes on a wall

i could not stop painting till all the combinations of the colors was done.

so it is with the clouds(hint hint) until every posible combination has been achieved the the work is not finnished but ever an ongoing task,

now those clouds as they mix they become a new color now since no two humans or plants or rocks are exactualy at the same size in mass or matter decompersition at any one time

then there are never the same two colors pass through the cosmos (see the picture now)

If that is the case, then cracking the codes of these clouds is relativly easy.

So we have these ten colors right? Right. Now since each of these ten colors mix to make new colors, we now have 110 (if my math is correct...Keep in mind I've been up for the past 24 hours) different colors after the first mixing. So now we have a much larger pallette to work with. These colors get mixed to create even more colors, and the process repeats, so if this is the case, all we would have to do is go in reverse order to find out the original colors.

see rember the clouds have diferent sizes so if you mixed green blue and red together two difrent times you will not get the shame color both times

as there may have been a small potion of say green in the second mix (so now you have greater more colors to put on the wall, they are shades of those colors)

i think that's one of the only questions that nobody knows the answer to. i'm not even sure there's an answer at all.

I have always believed that we are here to determine our eternity: Not only where we will end up (Heaven or Hell) but the specifics also: We meet people who we shall spend forever with should we make it to Heaven. We also develop fears and terrors in this life which we will experience to the highest degree should we go to Hell.

In short, my answer as to why we're here is to determine our eternities.

The meaning of life, is simply to live.

Let me see now the meaning of life in the end is to succumb to the darkness of a grave. But while we are here I think we are meant to learn something and failing that we should just be merry.

If you look at life logicly, you can come to one conclustion very fast. We are here to procreate and die. I wish I would have thought of the idea, DNA is fun to play with.

A concept I like playing with is the possibility of an over sized pea tree dish. An experiment that continues on and we are apart of it.

Sometimes I think that we are here for no reason at all, in the way that we die. I suppose that depending on one's belief's about how we got here, be it god, evolution or what ever, it's a personal thing. There, with as many views as there are, have to be as many reasons to be here, no right or wrong asnwers, and what ever the answers might be are different things. I think Curly said it best, it's about One thing, you just have to figure out what that one thing is.

clouds are not infinite. Eventually all the color go back to white. White contains the spectrum of all the colors. So all our lives we paint and then receive the light, and all that is done is undone, and we see we have lived half our lives and not accomplished a darn thing. We feel in death the urgency of meaning in life. That everytime we flush the toilet or cut down another tree for toilet paper, it must add up to something, there must be purpose, there must be meaning. But it is all in god's hands, we cannot think for oursleves, so we have no meaning, only just to live. Life adds up to nothing, god thinks for us, we don't have to think. It is good there is a god to give us meaning for all the things we are not able to understand, like the meaning in life, how the universe was created... anything really, why are we here. We will never know why god gave us life, even when we flsuh the toilet, we don't even examine our selves if it was all worth it. God has a plan, we will never see it, maybe some day we will be ontop of a cloud with god and then we can understand, Until then we will play our music loud, treat others like they are know nothings, and feel good about keeping others down, for that is what makes us feel good. That is ultimately the lesson from god, to make the perfect being only to be crucified. Yeah, that is what life must be about, giving all the pain to others to see if they can take it. We can't be happy if they are happy. I am going to make sure I am happy by keeping people down. It is gods way. I succomb to the teaching of god, the almighty lesson that we are here to crucify the ones who know the way. I can wait to get to my cloud. I wonder what color it is.

Life must add up to something, for each piece of garabge that ends up in landfill, make up for it by filling the world with beauty. There is no meaning finer.

I'll answer this in three stages:

ONE

The foundational reason is cause and effect, and began with the big bang, which was the forming point of this Universe in linear time.

TWO

The reason life is here, is because the universe it self is alive. It's self awareness and singular identity exists out side of linear time. We are the individual components of that living system that is the Universe. Through linear existance, we are blocked from experiencing the unbelievable connectedness of all things, with out alot of work. We are to gain self awarness, and assist in others gaining self awareness.

THREE

Lastly, in this universe, every possible outcome exists in one dimension of reality or another. So, we aslo exist here and now to explore the possibilites before us, so that the universe gains self understanding.

lifetime, that is all that counts. time is a construct of man, there is no such thing as time, it is relative, it is meant to reflect the heart beat which in a normal healthy human beats 60 times per second. Things in life like war and love they make our heart beat faster so our perception of time changes. It doesn't matter, tomorrow, if we are killed to day in war, and in love there is no monotony to have to mark the time, only to glance at a watch to see why she is late.

Love is why we are here. All kinds of love. Even the love of god for some, that gives them purpose. Love is what quickens the heart, stills the heart and makes it throb, and ache with time lost not spent together.

The meaning of life is different for everyone. Trying to figure out what life means to u is the true search for ur own spiritual quest. Only you can figure out what the meaning for life is as no one could tell u how to live.

I think we're here to learn. simple as that

Many people believe that we are here to learn certain lessons. They say we are reincarnated until all lessons are learned and mistakes are corrected. Considering this, I feel we're all one big science project left by the wayside. Life is a mean trick for those who feel "stuck " in it and an even meaner trick for those who are grasping for just one more day.

I believe it is to learn. Everything in life can be considered a learning experience, be it in our control or not. It's just a rollercoaster!

I agree with Tangible. Everyone here is for a purpose. Believe me i tried to take my life many yrs ago and failed so I figured either accept my life as it is, or it could be worse and be a quad for the rest of my life. We i say we are in judgement, then from Judgement hell knows, But tanglibe is correct its for all of us to learn :)

I agree, but take it a step further, we learn then we die we are then re born,. and we take what we have learned fro our previous lives ,until we have learned all there is to know then the gates will open . Its just a theory

I believe we are in this life, to learn, grow and make a difference. Generally I don't believe our path is known to us. We are put here for a reason, to complete certain aspects, lessons in this life. Even if it's for a short while there is a purpose for us all to be here.
We are all linked to each other, we may not know each other physically, but somewhere down the line, I know someone,they know someone and eventually we all have passed our energies one to another. It is like a huge circle. I think even if we touch one persons life, we have accomplished so much. Our lives, destinies are not known to us. Because of the lessons we need to learn. So live everyday of your life to the fullest.

Secondly, I'm noticing a few posts saying we're here to learn. Now if this is true, then why learn everything in our lives if we are all going to die?

Vlad it is the wheel or circle concept. Life is like a wheel. Soemtimes you are at the top of the wheel, and sometimes you are at the bottom under water, waiting for fortunes to change. When we come up for air, we must teach what we know to the ones coming down from the inevitable drop into the water. Success is temporary, you can only say I love you in a special way and mean it once, there is no joy in repitition. Because love and life are transitroy and the world conspires against castle walls, if the sand castle at the beach we have built crumbles then we teach the next generation how to mix ash and gravel into the sand and make concrete castles. That is why I am here, unfortunately, people don't know they are all living in castles made of sand that when their trip down from the top of the wheel into the water, their castles melts away, they remember they'd been warned, but they don't understand the forces why they didn't listen. I don't understand that force either that prevents the passing of the baton from one generation to the next.

But we till take in all this information, and die, the only reason we pass this information down is to make the next generations life better, but it's like you said about love, it means nothing if all it is, is repetition, so can only one generation of people, this generation being the last of the human race, be truly happy?

if life has only a limited amount of plots, then maybe there are limitations in what we are supposed to reel in at the end of the trip

#1 We're not actually here its all a figment of your imagination, when you go to sleep we cease to exist @.@!

#2 We're here because of luck, it was luck that life developed here on earth instead of another planet in our solar system, and that it was luck that we survived and adapted to our environment and survived through 5 mass extinctions.

#3 A higher power made a single man and woman and from that the entire human race was bore -.-

We've got no where else to be

That's a very good question, most people think were here just to live out our lives and then die...but personal i believe we live to experience the many things on this planet, some good, some bad...then when we die we go to a high level of living (as some people call, Heaven) if we're good but if we're bad we go to a lower level of living (some people call, Hell) Once we reach that other level of living...our path is spread out for all to see (as dumb as it may sound, if you think about it seriously it actually makes sense...to me it does anyway)

I'm here to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable :)

What's My Purpose in Life?

Consider a hammer. It's designed to hit nails. That's what it was created to do. Now imagine that the hammer never gets used. It just sits in the toolbox. The hammer doesn't care.

But now imagine that same hammer with a soul, a self-consciousness. Days and days go by with him remaining in the toolbox. He feels funny inside, but he's not sure exactly why. Something is missing, but he doesn't know what it is.

Then one day someone pulls him out of the toolbox and uses him to break some branches for the fireplace. The hammer is exhilarated. Being held, being wielded, hitting the branches--the hammer loves it. At the end of the day, though, he is still unfulfilled. Hitting the branches was fun, but it wasn't enough. Something is still missing.

In the days that follow, he's used often. He reshapes a hubcap, blasts through some sheet rock, knocks a table leg back into place. Still, he's left unfulfilled. So he longs for more action. He wants to be used as much as possible to knock things around, to break things, to blast things, to dent things. He figures that he just hasn't had enough of these events to satisfy him. More of the same, he believes, is the solution to his lack of fulfillment.

Then one day someone uses him on a nail. Suddenly, the lights come on in his hammer soul. He now understands what he was truly designed for. He was meant to hit nails. All the other things he hit pale in comparison. Now he knows what his hammer soul was searching for all along.

We are created in God's image for relationship with him. Being in that relationship is the only thing that will ultimately satisfy our souls. Until we come to know God, we've had many wonderful experiences, but we haven't hit a nail. We've been used for some noble purposes, but not the one we were ultimately designed for, not the one through which we will find the most fulfillment. Augustine summarized it this way: "You [God] have made us for yourself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee."

A relationship with God is the only thing that will quench our soul's longing. Jesus Christ said, "I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty." Until we come to know God, we are hungry and thirsty in life. We try to "eat" and "drink" all kinds of things to satisfy our hunger and thirst, but yet they remain.

We are like the hammer. We don't realize what will end the emptiness, the lack of fulfillment, in our lives. Even in the midst of a Nazi prison camp, Corri Ten Boom found God to be wholly satisfying: "The foundation of our happiness was that we knew ourselves hidden with Christ in God. We could have faith in God's love...our Rock who is stronger than the deepest darkness."

Usually when we keep God out, we try to find fulfillment in something other than God, but we can never get enough of that thing. We keep "eating" or "drinking" more and more, erroneously thinking that 'more' is the answer to the problem, yet we are never ultimately satisfied.

Our greatest desire is to know God, to have a relationship with God. Why? Because that's how we've been designed. Have you hit a nail yet?

This is not a slam on religion. I want the poster to indicate what god's plan is for him in particular. It is not enough to just love god. We must do. If we just are, then we take up space. What does God want you to DO? Loving god is fine, emulating it's concept in our actions is better. If we believe in a God, that only it is special, then we do not see our own powers, and DO something with our lives.

It is not enough to just BE. In order to "be" actually we must DO, then we can be again. It is a cycle. We grow from our actions. Loving God and ignoring life on earth is stale if we do not share the air bewteen us, and only speak to god's ear.

Ok if you are a hammer, and you are meant to hit nails, make the mertaphor concrete, what is your purpose? The love of god you talk about seems more like the noun form. I know love is also a verb, but to give oneself entirely to god is to forgo your own powers, and the love becomes a noun for it is a fire that dosn't have to be tended, it just is.

Make the love of god a verb, act with the power of god as you have done in this thread, share the word of god and illuminate. You will find teaching others about morals, and extending love beyond your door, you are doing and not just being.

It was an excellent metaphor, you hit the nail right on the head, but if we are all just spinning our wheels waiting for life to pass fro life to begin in heaven, then we have ignored this earth and everyone around us. That ain't living. Life is not a rehearsal. What we DO here counts. If there is a heaven it is our actions that bring us to the heaven above, and not blind faith that makes us passive to all the goings ons around us.

Religion is fine, but Marx said it was the opiate of the people. Another opiate, in my opinion is the TV. Do we ever accomplish anything while watching TV? No, it is a drug. Computers are interactive TV. We are exchanging ideas on here, we are projection visions and absorbing ideas. Good post, it made me think, but DO it more often.

I think we are here for the amusement of some higher being that enjoys to watch people suffer and beg for good doings upon them. As for the meaning of life that is something that is different for every man and woman We all know that we have some kind of animal inside of us not matter what that animal is it is there and sometimes we need to let that animal out. That is what is called living and why we are here.

On the contrary. Life has its purpose. We simply fail to understand. And that's when faith comes in. No matter if someone believes we are here for a purpose or not, we are bound to evolve and with that we maybe able to understand one day what life is about. And even if it is just to figure ourselves out. Maybe that's why we are here.

Idealism is deepest knowledge. Remember when you were young, the thoughts of life we had then? No matter what you learn or what you turn into, if there is excalibur in the rock, go up to the rock and pull out the sword to see if you can be king.

A sense of purpose is essential, fortunately life is so screwed up, we could go in any direction and find Donqueotes windmills to fight against. So just try to set up a tent somewheres, and fight the forces that try to take down the stakes of your claim. You will see that anyone trying to stop you and your happiness is the problem. I think we are part of the design of the universe, as is with any other living thing we are here to pass our seeds on for future generations.

My beliefs are we are here to gather experience to our souls from this life then move to another but as we move towards the next life are experience and part of us rejoin the energy around the earth and we are reborn to gain new experiences and then rejoin the major engery once again

I think we're to make the best of the life we are given. What we do with that life is not decided by anyone other than ourselves. There are people who life life on the edge they make the best of their life and then there are some who stay on the sideline and never step foot on the field even when there is one left to play but themselves.

We are here simply to die!, Life is the most terminal thing in the world, you start to die the moment you are born!! second, less blunt well i was born so i am surposed to be here, and third the most simplistic is who cares! enjoy life and dont look to deep for meaningness in everything!!, as i said my thoughts

I dont know how we got her but I do beleive that ore lives are a learning test of some sort...

well me personally i think that we all should make do of what we got and live live to fullest as we can.. i know its pretty lame to say but thats what i think

Is it really so unbearable to find that we might not have a higher purpose? Could it really be so bad if we're not living to please some old bearded rube in a robe or some 4(6?) armed ducky who destroys the world anyway or some tart with elk horns that decides whether or not to make it rain?

I understand the needs we often feel to find a purpose to life...I may even struggle with them more so because I don't have faith in gods or goddesses but sometimes, I think that those notions of purpose can detour us from responsibility here and now to the world we're living in and on another level, yes even detour us from the pleasures of just being alive.

If I'm too worried about making sure I fulfill my spiritual requirements, I might miss out on the joys of learning my limits in alcohol or what my food looks like coming back up or how sometimes that beauty that gives you a ride home is gonna take you to a higher spiritual plane anyway. The earthly joys of hedonism. Maybe that's why I'm here.
