Current medical research into the extending of human life, indicates that by altering the chromosomal chain by 'capping' the ends of some of the genes so that the gene does not continue to degenerate, as it normally would, with each succeeding cell division; could possibly result in a vastly increased lifespan for the normal human -- if not a form of human immortality.

what d you think of this and if you had the chance to be tested on would you do it?

To live this life for any longer than I absolutely have to would be a torment above and beyond anything done to me in the past. Life needs death; death defines life, gives it value. In living many hundreds of years, each day would mean less. Would I take it? No. Not for love, not for power, not for money.

i have heard of scientists trying to prolong life, i have even heard they are close...but i'm not sure if thats like 30 yrs or what. i'm not really into the subject, but i know merely little details for my close friend is scaried of dying and will do anthing to not die. even though he is only 18. but i believe that even with any genes being altered wouldnt we die after 3 hundred or 4 hundred because our brain cells competely die after that long? i'm not sure, thats all i was told.

I wouldn't be interested to be tested on because in some way my soul is not necessarily immortal, but has lived previous lives. I don't need my genes altered. It sounds like I'd be stuck in this time/body for a long time aned I definitely wouldn't want that.

Scientists aim to add a DNA sequence into a normal somatic cell which is otherwise only expressed in germ cells (egg and sperm) which produces the protein telomerase. Telomerase adds missing repeats to the caps of chromosomes – if too many repeats are lost the chromosome cannot replicate and therefore the cell can not divide.

Cancer cells are telomerase positive. The reason normal somatic cells do not contain this sequence is thought to be to reduce the risk of tumours.

Even if we could find another way to control the risk of tumours, telomorase positive somatic cells would not make a person immortal. Other factors such as disease would still effect said persons’ body.

I would not risk the chance of getting cancer by allowing myself to be tested on.

In responce to BrokenXDoll, up until a few years ago, it was held that brain cells were only created before birth, but studies in recent years suggest neurogenesis can occur in adults. However the pocess by which this happens is not well known - it seems to be different from normal mitosis.

I do not know very much on the subject, one would need to compare to the rate of creation to the rate of destruction.

But I have no interest in allowing science to play with my body. Goddess only knows what sort of mistakes they would make.

I have heard of those research over ten yrears ago and it was said that indeed the genes were regenerating for a time and allow us to stay young for a while then it gradually slow and stop, thisis when we start to get old and the genes who are in charge start to malfonction, then if the scientic were able to prevent that and make it possible for us to be immortal, well technicly live forever cause we still could be kill by another, but live forever then we could manage to make it so that we would end most of the toruble since the ones causing it would get tired of it and the ones trying to make life better will keep on working making it then a better place in the end, so in conclusion yes I would allow them to porceed on me and make me immortal.

I think LordVespertilio said it best. Death defines life, that's the cycle, everything needs to die eventually. I wouldn't be willing to be tested. Immortality is, in my opinion, inhuman. If we were meant to live longer, forever, we would. And to have someone messing with you on a genetic level could be diasterous.

I don't know how I feel about the idea of true immortality. But, given the chance to live longer, to learn more about everything and yet still to find true love, I might be swayed to give in to a little genetic tampering.

I don't know that I would try this. I am not so sure that I would really want to be immortal. Would my body stop aging? I'd hate to get stuck with this body forever. LOL I think the loss of everyone I hold dear is not worth the living forever. Now if they all did it too, I might just be interested. I make new friends easily enough, but I really like my family a lot.

I would wait a while after the first line of subjects to have an appropriate assessments to see if there are any negative side effects. If all turns out well for them I will have to see if me and my life partner are up for it, if one of us has any doubts then it would be a no, no :p

Still I think it would end up being used to keep the people at the top of the food chain in charge of the masses.

No I would not be tested, I do believe in genetic research for cures to diseases and such but to prolong the body does not address the quality of life lived. All things that live, die. That's natural order and it works for me.

I think that living longer would give me simply more time to learn. There would come a time where there would be no one to share it with because everyone had died.

But to live to learn, that is something.

There are animals who have managed to live for long periods and it's believed that they would continue to live and grow were it not for death from starvation, disease, or predators. Species of rock fish and lobster as well as certain whales and tortoises and even a species of crocodile have managed to show that their cells still decay but are infinitely reproduced to continue regeneration from aging for ever.

The problem with this scientifically supported form of 'immortality' is that these animals all continue to grow while alive. This means that if a human were to regenerate and reproduce their cells and genes without this form of decay, that person would continue to grow and we'd either have bodies that our form couldn't keep holding up in normal gravity, or we'd have 50 foot tall people walking around after they've reached the ripe old age of 500.

I agree with LordVespertilio. Hell, for a while I didn't want to live anyway and to live forever would have been torture, lol.

But seriously, tampering with genetics you cannot know what type of side effects or mutations you would have. Im not a big fan of science messing with natural order for what I see as superficial reasons. I think ppl need to be at peace with death not try deperatly to escape it even just for 30 yrs.

I would say that a long life span could be possible , but immortality??? In life there has to be death. Like many things can't exsist without the other. That is what makes the world go around. It is like the theroy of the ''Yin'' and the''Yang'' . Can't have one without the other.

I have always been a firm believer in the concept "when your time is up, too bad"

I would not try to give this string of research a try. Trying to change the laws of nature is wrong, and what is the fun in living forever, seeing everyone you love pass away from age or other, it would just loose it's fun in the long run.

I think if people had a firmer belief or grasp of what they knew would happen after death, there'd be a lot less clamoring for a physical immortality. Those that have spoken to this thread with confidence in the shortness of life, seem to be able to back that up with a certain amount of faith in something more.

Some of us have yet to find that luxury of faith.

Some people dont have the faith that there is something afterwards...also there is always those who arent ready to die....so it isnt like being immortal is a permanent thing. You could choose to die 500 years from now. Or live a normal life span.
And I didnt think that there were going to be so many no's and so few yes's. Ohh well....i stand by my answer. I would want to be imortal simply so i can continue to learn....about the past...present and future it matters not to me which.

Would I like to be /tested/? No. But if this research produced a reliable and sound result, then I would so it. However, I would prefer that it be an extended lifespan rather than an infinite one. Not only would the lack of death create a serious over-population problem, and put unimaginable strain on society and the earth, but it would seriously alter human behaviour. It would be easy to lose focus and impetus when there is no deadline. I think it would beget a mindset of apathy or carelessness. I'm sure it would be a procrastinators dream, though (although I don't think the proportion of wasted vs available time would change ^_^). A longer lifespan on the other-hand, would let us retain this prompting factor, while still allowing us the benefit of greater time for research and experience. I could see this having a positive effect on the sciences in particular, as the genius mind would not be lost before they could complete their work. I personally am an ever curious, ever learning person, and I feel like I don't have enough time to possibly take in enough information on the topics I am interested in. I think it would be importaint, wether it is infinite or extended life however, to restrict implementation of the alteration to after the recipient has finished making progeny. This would allow their offspring the option of choosing, rather than forcing this alteration upon them.

I disagree that everything NEEDS to die. Especially on the grounds that it makes room for newer things. I don't see why newer things need to happen so often. We hardly get the full opportunity to experience all the current things and I may be a bit selfish, but I fail to see why I should have to give up my place for something that has yet to occur and would therefor not know of it's 'missed place'.

Id take the chance if i could stay young longer too then staying older but more longer...

They say that with every death there is life so if there is no death will there be less life? And if there is too many people around i dont think there world would be a safer place to live, everything evil would be found around so it really depends on the consequences if u want to take the chance.

i wouldn't do it-everything has to dye to move on even if (in some cases)there is nothing to move on to....you live you die-that is the order of things why mess with it? when it's tyme to go just do it, there is no real reason to prolong is there?i already feel like i'm trapped in a fleshy tomb above ground, why would i want to feel like that foe-ever?

it sounds interesting and if it did work, i would want all my loved ones to have it to, that way we wont be unhappy seeing everyone we care about grow old and pass away

Holy crap!
Yeah. I'd do it.
After all, after I'd already done everything, I could just lay in bed and see shapes in the paint in the ceiling and be happy for....well...for forever.

The whole reason I serve is to one day move on to the spirital realm. So I would have to say no.

Yingth, tell me if you are who you say you are, with all the knowledge and experience you say you posesse, please tell me why do you speak like a 5 year old brat who has no diplomaty and cannot accept that others can be right at moment. For my part I allow myself to bow to others knowing there is people with higher knowledge and more maturity then me. So pelase do yourself a favor and stop being a poser. Cause this is not helping you make friends.

Thank you

As for immortality I would embrasse it in the instant it is offer to me and transmitted to the ones that are precious to me for that they would be with me forever too.

There is alot of people saying that they would not want to be immortal on the grounds of population. Well there is already this problem in the world today. People are already living longer, more children are born then ever before. So the population is already screwed up.

This shouldnt be a part of your decision on if you would like to me immortal or not. We are already facing these problems already. So what other reasons do you have?

I'd rather live and die, I love my life... sometimes... but I wouldn't want to live it forever, yes you'd be imortal, but your not invincible, you can't stop yourself from getting diseases, and the you'd have to deal with everyone you love dieing, or being in pain, it would suck.
