There was a night a few months ago, I was having a horrible time falling to sleep. The next thing I know, I swear that I am awake in the dark and I feel as if something or someone is standing over me and I am paralyzed; whether from fear or not I still do not know. I honestly believe that I saw a figure (as a shadow-nothing defined)
Anyhow just as I feel as though I am as scared as I can get; I wake up (again) and I am okay. I can move (which I do) very quickly out of my room and throughout my entire home to make sure that there is no one lurking. Of course, I did not find anything..

That night was the first time that had happened to me but it was not the last time. My reactions are not quite the same as they were the first night it happened. Nevertheless, it's still a little nerve-wracking when I don't know what it is..

Anyhow, my question is this: Has anyone else ever experienced something such as that? And if so, what is it? Or better yet, what causes that type of thing?

That happens to me all the time. I just accept what is happening,if its someting you have no control over, there's no point in trying to fix it. I don't think it is there to hurt you, cause if it wanted to, it would. Or maybe it could just be our minds fucking with us to the point we actually see what we think.

I am actually still confused as to whether or not I actually woke up the first time; I mean I felt as though I had woken up..
But it could have possibly been a dream, right?

I have had the same experience, as well. It can either be discribed as just one of the stange parts of the sleep cycle. Or, it can be explained as either a curse that is sent to you or a visit from a psychic vampire. I have seen both of those as answers.

That sounds to me like you were the victim of a psychic attack. I do know there are ways to protect or shield this, but I do not know how, as I am still a beginner on matters like this. I am sure there are others on this site that can help you though.

This phenomenon is called sleep paralysis.

I recommend reading up on some of the studies, and doing a google search on sleep apralysis for more information, especially regarding some of the mythos around this phenomenon.

Thank you every so kindly, Requiem, for the informative link. I had never heard of such a thing until you posted it.
I am indeed going to research it further..
Who would have thought?

Interesting information I found of some use however:
There are two major types of sleep paralysis. One is called Common Sleep Paralysis and the other is Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis.

The part of the article that intrigued me the most is where they discuss the fact that the Hallucinatory Sleep Paralysis(HSP) seems to be geographically related. Where a region would have no reports of anyone suffering from HSP and then all of sudden there are all types of reports of people suffering from such and the area would be 'effected much as if an epidemic' for a few months and would then stop the same way it started. According to the article, there is no explanation for why that may be the case as of yet..

I have had times where I wake up not paralyzed but just with a feeling that someone is in the house. I will get up and check the whole house and there will be no one there and all the doors will be lock as when I went to bed. It is very strange feeling.

Well according to the pages I have been reading it happens like this:

The body shuts down(paralyzed state, if you will) during REM sleep. They explain the reasoning behind this being that if your body did NOT shut down, you could be very dangerous to yourself as well as others if you body moved along to what is happening in your dreams(which does happen to some. Sleep-walking is one example)
Anyway, sometimes a person wakes up too quickly and the body has not had the time to start functioning properly which is why sometimes you get the sleep paralysis effect. Some believe it is directly related to those who suffer from narcolepsy although, I am not among one of those seeings I have had many cases of sleep paralysis and don't suffer from narcolepsy. If you want more information, check out the link that Requiem posted or feel free to message me and I can direct you to the page that I was reading

A similar thing happens to me, except that it is when I'm being visited by a certain spirit. She is quite frightening, though harmless so far as i can tell. It is still unnerving to not be able to move, and see a figure with no face though.

i felt something very similar recently. i awoke to feel a cold hand clasping mine. i could not move - except i could move my thumb and fingers very slightly - and when i tried to speak, i couldnt. eventually, i was able to move, and the feeling of a hand holding mine gradually faded - but it felt so real, so solid - i could feel the cold clammy texture of skin - it was horrible.

I've had these feelings many times, and most of them tried to strangle me. Usually I repelled them, and I've seen a shadow person as well, but it was in the shape of a minatour (bull head human body) before it stepped back into a dark shadow and vanished. For some reason though when ever this happens I get angry and send all the hate in me at it, or else I spaek out in a matra in my mind that I'm more powerful then it.

I've had many experiences of that nature in many different ways, the worst was when the entity lifted my boyfriend and threw him back about three feet. Some are stronger than others so u need to know your limitations. If it persist try and find someone that can help because it may become worst.

I had something happen on the same lines of the paralysis and fully knowing it was happening.

About five years ago I was in bed. I had a bad experience that I thought I wouldn't wake up from. I knew there was something laying on top of me, pressing its weight down and suffocating me. I couldn't do anything but lay there and and look at/through a shadowy entity. The only reason I believe that I can write about it today is because the guy I was seeing at the time woke up to the sound of me weezing.

He asked me if I was ok cause he said I was white as ghost and my eyes were very wide and had a frightened look in them.

I haven't had an experience like that since then, but I really wouldn't want to either.

I have had the same kind of experience. One time when this happened i thought I had awaken from dream to only be in another dream state. By the third time i forced my self to wake up and felt a presence over me and I was talking to this presence in some language I am not use to speaking. I was also taken back by this and what ever i sais it made this person or thing leave and i was able to get up and go into the living room were i could share with my sister what happened. It was like 3 am and she was still on Vampire Rave. Im still myself unsure what happened.

The closest experience:

I do not remember the dream I was having, but do remember waking up in a completely fright.

I was sweating and could not move. I don't think there was anyone or anything there.

I just could not move. I eventually fell back to sleep.

This is actually quite common (as is also obvious by the amount of "me too" posts). It is even mentioned in history. There are a few things it could be. Sometimes various entities come to visit, sometimes magicians will come to visit. Sometimes they mean harm, but usually the people who have these experiences are left unharmed. I have had all sorts of odd things occur upon waking, but I practice magic so I sort of expect it :).

To have this sort of thing stop if it is happening too often, you can add salt to water (or use sea water) and sprinkle it around where you sleep. This method is more affective then one might imagine! It also helps with other sorts of visitations at night that are not welcome.

Night

i have read of sleep paralysis, and though my experience is similar, i did not feel any weight on my chest or dificulty in breathing. i just felt a cold clammy hand in mine. i swear i could feel skin. it is worth noting that it was in my left hand - the hand which is usually numb when i am at rest.

Well they are sort of attracted to (us) folks who can see them...Freaky at sometimes, but also fun at times. It is unfortunate though when people have these sorts of experiences but do not have all the good ones as well :(. I have had many people tell me about the unable to move upon awaking thing and it freaked them right out, and it has been there only expericne with spirits that is that strong.

Night

My brother has had that same experience. His actually progressed to the shadow pulling his bedspread off him night after night. We do not know why this ghost (for lack of a better word) did this every night until we moved out of that house. I wonder if your situation will progress to contact.

Every now and again I smell cigarette smoke even if there's no one around who smokes... My windows are all shut and cannot be opened, except the bathroom window. That window is on the driveway side of the house and it the only thing I smell from there is the car exhaust which lingers and permeated the entire apartment. Yet this cigarette smell is localized. It stays in a particular part of the room and only lasts at most about 5 minutes. It is always in a different place in the apartment when it accrues too, so I still can't figure it out.

Also when I've taken pictures with my digital camera, I've found in pictures taken just seconds apart, one will be fine and the other will have these orbs floating about. It's truly mindboggling.

Hello Jens,

I've had similar sorts of 'phantom' smells- a burning acrid stink. Sometimes feels like my nose is itching inside.

It does occur in very random places, but a lot more often when I'm in certain peoples company.

Wow!!! I thought I was the only person that this has happened to.I stopped telling people about it long ago because the responses I got from people were outbursts of laughter to people looking at me like I'd lost my mind!I have actually been awakened by the bad shaking(and I would be in bed alone at the time) and then feel myself being pulled by my arm or arms out of the bed. It's some wild s**t for sure!

I am glad Requiem posted the link for sleep paralysis. There are often easy answers in life as opposed to something 'odd'.

I have two entities that reside in my house. One appears to be gentle and caring but the other is terrifying. I had to put a protection spell on my children because they would wake up in the middle of the night screaming. I think the scary one got the hint and left or is hiding out in the basement. The nice one is still there and knew I was having a rough spell the last few days and it would just brush my hair out of my face and stroke my hair while I laid in bed until I calmed down. I was fully awake during this and can't quite explain it.

Well I have 2 experiences. When I was younger I felt something grab my foot while I was sleeping. At first I thought I’d dreamed it, except for the fact it still had ahold of me even after I woke up. I jerked my foot away and ran into my parent’s room. My dad checked my room and the house, found nothing, and told me to go back to bed. Just as I was starting to fall asleep I felt something grab my foot again. Instead of getting my parents again I decided to look for myself, found nothing, went back to bed and never experienced it again.

On another occasion I woke up suddenly from a deep sleep and saw a clawed hand at the edge of my bed about 2 feet from my face. I jumped up and felt my arm hit my side and hang there lifelessly. I’d fallen asleep on my arm and it had gone numb in a clawed position as a result. I laugh about it now, but it scared the shit out of me back then.

I have had it happen to me several times over the years, and I believe that it could be any number of things that could be bothering you. 1. Could be some unsettled spirit in your house, 2. Could be a supernatural boogie (they are created by left over psychic energy which is usually produced by you), 3. An alien. I don't know if I really believe in them or not, but the reports that I have read have said that victims feel that sort of suffocating paralysis and they watch their attacker as it observes them. Time may also be disjointed as part of the effect that they have on their victim. Can you tell I'm scared of aliens? haha 4. Could be a dream or some other easily explained things, but you already thought of that or you wouldn't be posting...5. Maybe vampires really do exist? :)
