i was at the store that other night and descovered her new book about christ and then i was told that shes given up lestat
i didnt belive it but i just watched an interview her saying shes found god
but yet i didnt find anything saying she was giving up the vampries
do u think we will ever see our beloved vampire hearos again?
i am starting this post because i want to know what others have seen on tv read online and think because i dont have cable pran intana so i haveno clue whats going on

Indeed, this started around 04. She is done writing about vampires and witches, she has become very religious, almost overtly so. Happens to the best of them, they get older and start to think they better repent before it's too late. I dont have a problem with it, I just don't like hearing about it.

Yes, sadly so, no more tales of Louis, Lestat, the Mayfairs...all gone and done.

What is it about finding God that makes people believe they can't write fiction any longer?

she is still writing fiction but about a kid being god now some people i know who are very religious would think her book blashphemus

This is not news- it happened a few years ago. She has not abandoned her novels of vampires and witches, just not writing anymore of them.

There are projects she's done since returning to the Catholic Church- like the Lestat Broadway play and the work on the Mayfair Witches series for TV.

Oh yes I heard about that quite a long time ago. Nothing wrong with a writer wanting to try out something new. She is talented after all. I am sure she could put out a decent story no metter what subject she chose, I doubt she will ever consider those characters as completely devilish really. After all over time your characters do grow on you. I do not see her ever abandoning them completely.

As much as I enjoy her books, all this means is that the door is open for a new writer to produce magnificient literary constructs.

There's nothing wrong with following a new path and as posted above I don't believe she's completely abandoned her vampire and witch novels, she's just going in a new direction. Thinking about "Memnoch the Devil" and many of her other novels have a bit of theological undertone anyway.

That is the most horrible thing I've ever heard......I've always been in love with the famous characters known from Anne Rice, but I guess now we'll just have to wait for another uncorrupted genius to inspire our fantasies of them. Either way, no one will ever forget the work she has done.

I myself wonder how Christopher her son feels about all this as he is gay and open and she moved in with him after Stan died of cancer...
Chris Rice is also a fabulous author in his own right, but I tend to agree this opens the door for all other authors in this genre

I doubt she has a problem with him being gay or he has a problem with her in church. I go to church a few times a week- and gay doesn't bother me either way, it's neither here nor there- it simply 'is'.

Yea, her religious beliefs DO have an impact.

I've read her vampire novels and I read "Christ the Lord." It was a wonderful read and she continues to excel in setting, making you feel you are in the time and place. When Jesus looks up as his family's ship sailed past the lighthouse of Alexandria, I got chills.

I read all of the author's notes in the book and she still speaks fondly of her other books and endeavors. I saw no indication that she'll pigeonhole herself away from her imagination.

I'm no Anne Rice-o-phile, but I respect her ability to write and to search for a path that works for her. Why are we so accepting here of Wiccan beliefs, atheism, the occult, (hell, I've seen claims here that people ARE demons) but so condemning of people who choose Christianity?

I suggest it is because you see so much of it that it's easy to reject. Easy to take a bad Christian and apply that person to the faith in general and condemn it. But as a New Orleanean, post-Katrina, I have to tell you, it wasn't the government or any of the above mentioned paths that came en masse to rebuild and make a difference here. It was Christians who didn't ask questions other than, "where can I help?" Some had no real skills, but they picked up debris, paintbrushes, and just plain HELPED.

well, this site is finding god, if you haven't noticed lately. I myself have found a separate peace with a higher understanding, and as an agnostic it still fits within my philosophy, if we cannot learn from all the philosophies, sciences, religions, then we cannot be judges.

Ultimately by the time we leave life we can sit in judgEment, and this is the oath that Rice was on. Writers however have some hidden agenda when they first set out. A writer like Rice is going to have her whole career plotted from the beginning as fiction writers totally understand life, and I think she gained the audience of the decadent, and the attention of the good to corrupt them with evil, only to bend the whole planet towards what her original goal as a writer was, to find the "concept" of god and good and evil in the middle of our lives instead of at the end.

I had heard that too, and almost couldn't believe it myself. Unfortunately, it seems we won't be seeing anymore of Lestat, or anyone else that made their vampiric mark on the literary world.

Well I for one I truly enjoyed her vampire novels and will miss them. I wish her the very best in her new found style. I may pick up a book from her still if it looks like a good read. I appreciate everyones oppinions and posts and leave here with a very open mind.

She is a great writer I have loved her work forever but I found her sons work as well. I do relize not all ppl who have faith and belief in God are anti gay..I know others will follow in her foot steps but she will be greatly missed..Hell I miss her erotic works and I read those long before she started writing about vampires...
Stan died and she needed something that she got thru. Her church which is great it is much better then seeing her pine for the man she loved so long even when they had personal problems.
We have her body of work to read and reread yes we wont know what happens next to Lestat or Armond or any of the others but well those days are over..
We find new champions for our lore and explore the other sutors out there sprining up daily sorry I think there is an sp in there but I cant tell right now I am in the middle of one of my headaches and most likely shouldnt even be here tonight but its this or sit and cry due to pain and vr has helped me not focus on the headache at times...

It's common that writers move about with different genres. As you stated, she once wrote erotica and abandoned that. I once wrote erotica- and abandoned it. George Lucas wrote the Star Was stories and finished with them. Chronicles don't last forever.

No they dont but we still maintain our friends in those books I know I feel a great sense of loss each time I finish re-reading the LOTR series..These charators have become my friends I want more about them but also know I wont ever receive more at least not by that Author..Yes Anne is a wonderful and compassionate writer the tales she spins are both fantastic and utterly believeable..
We want more from our friends who wouldnt want to hear more about them..I read tons of fan fiction due to this very reason the charators although in some ways changed do continue you get to know more about them and I have even taken to writing things about charactors I like or adore..Not mind you this should be the only source or take over your life...
There are other authors with new and exciting rich charactors all the time..
Heck She might write about them again you never know although Stephen King is supposed to be retired he still writes..
They cant stop and the new books of hers are excellent from what I have so far read...

She wrote plenty of vampire books anyway. lol maybe she realised she needed to find a new shtick in order to sell books.

id say its very unfortunate and sad to have lost such a beloved writer, at first i never believed it either, i watched a online clipping of how she just converted.

Anne had moved from New Orleans to La Jolla, CA - in my home town of San Diego for a few years. Don't remember where she has moved now. She had not really gotten over the death of her beloved husband and due to that, she turned back to the Catholic Church and began her new series of novels about Christ from a young lad through his life.

She had lost what was inside to continue writing the Vampire Chronicles and such. I have been wanting a sequel to Ramses the Damned, it was left wide open for one but now, who knows. She'll continue wit the Christ series until done and then we'll see how she feels then.

As was said before, this isn't new, she "converted" a long time ago. Frankly I wonder if it even deserves this much attention. So she became aware of her own mortality, and reacted dramatically.

-shrugs- honestly dont really matter much to me, the books shes written are books that are on my to read list.

ann rice is a wonderful writer .... on everything she does her books she wrote under her outher name were wonderful to.... she found god well alot of people do and we shouldnt condem someone for just wanting a change in writing......this is why alot of writers takeon diffrent names when they decide to write a diffrent styl book so the regular readers dont get upset when they change ......i think she was brave to keep her name with her new book...... and it just proves shes a better person for it........it wont stop me from reading her books........i watched a documetery on her life on cable on night .... she had a ruff life she was an achoholic and struggled through alot........maybe thes new books will give her some peace.....

the first book is called "the claiming of sleeping beauty" and is prolly the best story i have read of hers eva... have fun if ya interested

I really thought that she should have finished the vampire chronicles after Queen of the Damned and maybe before then. Once Lestat became so powerful that he had to go to hell ...literally, I thought that her work was getting away from her. Characters require conflict and obstacles and a vampire that is all powerful really doesn't have any.

In Body Thief, they had to make him human again in order to get that conflict back.

More and more I felt that the tension and style of the first two books were overdone and lost in her following works...it became the "TV series based on the movie"

She has opened many doors with her books, she gave me deep thought on many things that she wrote. There are always new paths opened to us, I guess this is just the one she chosed for herself.

There's a great many different paths that new book could take since there's a couple decades missing in the story of Jesus' life. There's legends that he studied with druids in Britain, there's the possibility that he learned some of his philosophies from Hindu Masters. I'd be interested to see her take on this story and how much influence the Catholic beliefs has on natural tendency to play dramatic.

ImagesInWords - It does depend pretty heavily on what faith you subscribe to and how you interpret your religion. There are some pretty heavy fire and brimstone Christians out there who think Harry Potter is blasphemous enough without adding vampires to the mix.

Some Catholics are really trying to push the envelope of morality. Just look at Tom Monaghan who's building an all Catholic town that would keep out immoral citizens and businesses. Catholics are supposed to be the new right wing evangelical. Jeb Bush is Roman Catholic.

I agree that faith doesn't necessarily imply that one must put behind all of one's fiction and fantasy...but that interview above made mention that she would "only write for the lord now". So unless that interview was false or her statement in the interview was false, she may have decided for a complete turnabout.

It's all up to what your denomination's interpretation of the Bible is- and when I say Christianity~ it's true I am speaking of my own 'brand'.

First let me just say this. After Anne's husband Stan died, her whole life and reason died. For she based her character Lestat after her husband, the child Claudia was based on her dead daughter Michelle. So I do believe she's moved on w/her life and closed the chronicles for good. I would hope not, but from what I understand she's found her path again and shes content. It helps her cope w/the loss of her husband.
I read the book, and all though I am not Christian...I am an Anne Rice fan..I am faithful to her and her work. The work is not that of Vampires or Witches, but the story was done well in it's own right.

This is the first I'd heard of this. I feel as bad as I did when Buffy the Vampire Slayer was taken off the air *grin*. Seriously, as a writer, she will come full circle and when ready may very well write her masterpiece. Writers take all their hell and glory and build from it. Hopefully, she is still in a chrysallis state and will WOW us with a hybrid of all the aspects of her writings; the erotica, the vampirism and her constant brushing with religion -- she's always touched on religion in one way or another. I'm curious to read where her mind is taking her now.

I know I was extremely disappointed to hear about Anne Rice. I thourghly enjoy her vampires series.

She hasn't gone anywhere, she's just not writing what you want her to. That's your problem, not hers. Who exactly do you think she writes for? She's writing what she wants to write about. Frankly, I'd be more disappointed if she wasn't doing that. Her writing would suffer as a result, I'm willing to bet.

If you haven't read Out of Egypt, you have no right to complain about the turn she's taken in her writing. I actually enjoyed it more then several of the books from the Vampire Chronicles. It does require a bit of an open mind, which Images and Joli have already pointed out seems to be lacking from many people on this site.

I saw that book in the bookstore and for some reason I was not tempted to buy it. Maybe because for me anything involving christ just really bothers me. But I will be sad if she just gives up on her vampire characters

When she wrote of vampires it hepled her to overcome the grief from the death of her child. She has now turned to god. This follows the death of her husband. Perhaps she feels that her own death maybe sooner rather than later.

I think it's funny. She went from writing about Vampires, witches and all that. Then she wrote erotica and now she's writing about god. If you like her, You should check out some of the books her son christopher Rice has written. He's pretty good.

i think its funyn every one here has stated that her change happed because the death ofher husband when i have posted her very words that says that it didnt and that she was feeling like this and thinking of god a while before he died.

Great writers are great writers. She may have moved in a different direction, but so did I from my Catholic upbring in Spain.

Yes. Anne FREAKIN' Rice has decided not to continue with her vampire and witch books. AND?

I'm as big a lover of Rice as anyone, truly finding my love of the genre in her works. But does the fact that she has changed the "direction" of her writing endeavors change my opinion of her talent? PFFFTTTTT. Not in the least.

Not being a religious person myself, I still give Ms. Rice props for finding something in her life that gives her a sense of peace. Hell, I'm happy for her. I will miss her characters as much as the next fan, but I think her personal and spiritual fulfillment are far more important than providing entertainment to the "darker" side and any resulting financial gain.

My first introduction to Anne was the book interview with a vampire. Since then I have read all of the Chronicles, and Mayfair novels, but then I did some research and began reading her earlier works that had nothing to do with either "witches or vampires".

These few selections I also enjoyed, and was not in anyway "offended" or "put-out" by these earlier works (even though they had nothing to do with our beloved Lestat )

From what I have been reading it is not that she has changed her topic that has everyone so upset, but the "subject" topic itself.

I find this truly unsetteling, and very narrow minded.

Would this even be an issue if she had introduced us to some other form of character other than The Christ?

I must say that when I first heard about this I was saddened. I have enjoyed Lestat, Louis, Armand and the Mayfair Witches. Anne Rice has always been a very inspired writer. I will miss these beloved characters. But, I am sure there will soon be someone who will bestow open us an even more captivating vampire.

It is sad in some ways, however life is all about evolving and changing. Her personal circumstances changed when she lost her husband, and I cannot fault her for her new found faith.

people change & decide to go on to do other things in life. yes it stinks that she stopped writing the vampire novels but that doesnt mean she cant come back & start again with the saem novels but with a new twist. just b/c she "found religion" as some put it doesnt mean nothing at all other than she found another avenue in life to make her happy....
has anyone ever read books by l.a. banks? shes a christian but also writes books about vamps neterus & also throws in a few demons from hell along with a few words of profanity that noone would expect a christian to utter....so who knows what the future brings for anne rice. good luck in her endeavors for now i say

i have read all of her books so far, and i will continue reading the ones to come. she writes stories that make you feel like you are there. i love that feeling! she is one of the greats........
