I've done a lot of research on this matter before and I can only do this on assuptions of myself. That probably Lilith was the first vampire. Only on myths and such, though.

According to Kindred myth, the first of their kind was Caine, the first murderer. For his crime, Caine was cursed by God and thereby transformed into a vampire. Caine was forced to stalk the fringes of civilization, fearful of the sun and ravenous for blood. Caine found a witch named Lilith, who had been Adam's first wife. Lilith taught Caine how to use his blood for magic ( few heretics claim that Lilith, not Caine, was the First Vampire). Lilith taught Caine many things, including how to use his blood to evoke mystic powers - and how to create others of his kind.

I do think Lilith was the first vampire just from research and personal opinion. Many people say it was Caine and some say it was Lilith. And many others also.

My assumption was on lillith and cain aswell. there is a book. three letter word, cant think of the name but fragments of it are being searched through out the world. it is known to be the first vampire book, telling the story of Cain and lillith. i wish i could think of the name!! well theres also a copy of it on amazon.com but not as great as the true find. each fragment that has bene found was of a different language. its fascinating to research on it. the vampiric bible is a good read as well.

Yep, This is some more stuffs on Lilith that I found on wikipedia.

Lilith is a female Mesopotamian night demon associated with wind and thought to harm children. In the Book of Isaiah, Lilith (לִילִית, Standard Hebrew Lilith) is a kind of night-demon or animal, translated as onokentauros in the Septuagint, as lamia "witch" by Hieronymus of Cardia, and as screech owl in the King James Version of the Bible. Lilith also appears as a night demon in the Talmud and Midrash. She is often identified as the mother of all incubi and succubi. Late medieval Jewish legend portrays her as the first wife and equal of Adam. Considering Adam inferior, Lilith left the Garden of Eden of her own free will (Other stories claim Lilith refused to lie under Adam, as she considered that this was too submissive). Adam then bade three angels to find Lilith and bring her back. When Lilith refused, God punished her by commanding that she slay 100 of her children, called Lilin, each day. Lilith is also sometimes considered to be the paramour of Satan.

We have had many threads on this subject...Usually the same biblical referances come up as the common opinions...However, things started much sooner than any biblical stories...You must look back to the Lemurian time period to find the answer you seek...

If you must insist in utilising semi-mythical references, some of which have been adapted to fit the background history of a fantasy roleplay world, then you also have to integrate the surrounding associated legends.

In the case you are stating as 'true fact', this would mean subscribing to the concept of Nephilim and as a result, they would fulfill the role as the 'first vampire' within your hypothesis.

I am with Enigma on this.. Why is it every time anyone talks about this subject that they run to bible tales...THIS BOOK is not a true account of History. It was writen by men who wanted to control the masses...Not to dismiss the Christians and their holy book. But that another subjet all together.. For the answer to this question we must look much further back than a book that is only 2007 years old or so...Yes I know parts are older..but just drop it...

The answer is not simple, and there are no references to "vampire" found in religious texts. Lilith is as close as can be to a description of vampiric behaviors, first described in Sumerian myth "The descent of Inanna" 3000 bce. There is the reference in Isiah 34:14 in the Israelite tradition. The word "lilit" refers to an owl, or as a demon. The Talmud, She is a spirit of darkness, and uncontroled sexuality. Lilith is said to fertilize herself with male sperm (blood?) to give birth to demons (vampires?). a collection of legends, the "Alphabet of Ben Sira", of Hebrew origin, 9-10 ce, describes Lilith as a demon as well as the "Alphabet of Ben Sira" . In the 12th ce Lilith took on cosmic power as the chaotic feminine presence, and as the wife of Satan.

Those who wrote the script for VtM were not the originators of these myths, but used them as fodder for their imaginary world of vampires.
My personal belief is that the Goddess Lilith, and the God Set of predynastic Egypt, are the archetype of Vampyres. Set is associated with the Nephilim, due to His ancient and unknown origins. There is a mystery here, and only those who were present at that time know the answer.

The origins of the beings that following the Christian Era were called (vilified) "vampires" began with the arrival from the skies of the "Nephilim" ("Sons of God" or "Fallen Angels") whose sensual capacity had them "corrupting" Human females by awakening in them their true eroto-emotional potentials.

Their male offspring by these women possessed this same "Dark" sensual Gift, which made them fully compatible and equal to Human females. This gift was vilified as evil by the sex-negative religions of the day... except in those greater civilizations where such was revered rather than shunned. Thus, throughout the records of Judaism, Islam, and Christianity, they were viewed as evil and the females of such societies taught to fear them as blood drinkers, as the "Undead," as evil denizens of the night.

However, the first accounts of them in the Christian era speak only of their "physiologically impossible" hypersensuality... just as also were described their "Fallen Angel" forefathers before they, too were vilified as "evil" and as "Fallen."

In the Common Era, the first usage of the term "vampire" is found in the Slavic term Upir' first appearing in written form in the year 1047 CE and describing not a blood-drinking, anti-Christian, immortal walking corpse... but instead a very-alive, mortal, Eastern Orthodox Christian priest: "Father Upir' Likhyj"

For those interested in learning more, you are welcome to seek more info and hyperlinks to primary-source material on the subject as found in my November 2006 Journal entry on the subject of the first usage of the word "Vampire" in history.

Things I have found on the First

The creation of beings

In the beginning, the earth was dark and barren, except for a sea of blood. Then came the undead gods who achieved spiritual immortality through death and rebirth. They made life spring from the depths, but the bloods being impure made demons. These are called primordial demons.
They needed the blood to sustain them. The undead gods were unsatisfied with their creations, so they made them conceive and bare children unto them. These children they called vampyres.
Then the gods took some earth and mixed it with the blood and made humans. They were created to be servants to their masters the Vampyres. The mother of the vampyres is known to the humans as Lilith
And the humans who did the will of the vampyres were reborn as wolves, and they were called upon by magic and transformed into werewolves or Lycans. Then their soul would merge with their physical form and bring justice to those that opposed them. Also a dead human could be raised and controlled by magic to do their bidding.

The Identity of Lilith
Early theologians had a real problem with the status of women in regard to Genesis. Here is this supposedly weak creature twisting Man around her finger and bringing death on the entire race. A "logical" answer presented itself in splitting woman into the Madonna/whore dichotomy. There was even a Biblical basis for Lilith. Genesis 1:27 reads, "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." Set opposite Genesis 2, in which Adam is created first and Eve is an afterthought to appease his loneliness, many see this as evidence that Adam had two wives.
Lilith is this first wife. Since she was made of the earth, like Adam, she became proud and refused to lie beneath him during intercourse. This violated the command to be fruitful and multiply, since she was not being impregnated. Some traditions hold that she was impregnated and bore demons from him. The evidence for this is the statement in Genesis 5:3 "Adam begat a son in his image," implying there had been sons not in his image. He pushed the issue of her submission, and she uttered the Holy Name of God and flew away.
Adam complained to God and he sent three angels to reason with her. They found her coupling with fallen angels near the Red Sea and bearing more demonic children. She refused to return but promised to spare Adam's children if the names of the angels: Sanvi, Sansanvi and Semangelaf were written near them. Even today, some parents will charcoal a magic circle with the words "Adam and Eve barring Lilith" on the wall near their baby, and write the names of the angels on the door.
Eve was created out of Adam as her replacement. Some say God let Adam try making the next one, but the creation was so horrible God destroyed it before even giving it life. An amusing Victorian story claims a dog ran off with Adam's rib and devoured it before God found him, so Eve was made using one of the dog's ribs.
Lilith did not eat of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, and hence is immortal. She was rewarded for service by Asmodeus, the demon of lechery, luxuriousness and evil revenge. She now rules one of the levels of Hell in the company of Namah, Machlath, and Hurmizah. Her power is over newborn children and women in childbirth. She may take boys up to the eighth day and girls up to the twentieth. She is also the mother of the Lilim or Lilot, the Djinn, and the succubui and incubi.
Other Biblical references: Isaiah 34:14 "night hag" (NIV translates it as "Desert creatures" and "night creatures." and Psalm 91 "terror by night"
Connection with Vampires
Lilith is the prototype of the succubus. She comes to men as they dream and drains their blood. This aspect features as prominently in the legends as her taking of children. It is her revenge on Adam that she drains his sons as they sleep, always taking the top.
Current Nonconformist Views of Lilith
From _The Chatto Book of Dissent_, edited by Michael Rosen and David Widgery.
It's published by Chatto & Windus Ltd, London, 1991.
Lilith
God formed Lilith the first woman just as He had formed Adam except that He used filth and impure sediment instead of dust or earth. Adam and Lilith never found peace together. She disagreed with him in many matters, and refused to lie beneath him in sexual intercourse, basing her claim for equality on the fact that each had been created from earth. When Lilith saw that Adam would overpower her, she uttered the ineffable name of God and flew up into the air of the world. Eventually she dwelt in a cave in the desert on the shores of the Red Sea. There she engaged in unbridled promiscuity, consorted with lascivious demons, and gave birth to hundreds of *Lilim* or demonic babies, daily...
It is said that soon after Lilith left Adam he stood in prayer before his creator and said: "God of the World, the woman that you gave me has run away from me." Immediately God, the Holy One, dispatched the three angels, Sanvai, Sansanvai, and Semangelof to bring her back. They caught up with her in the desert near the Red Sea. "Return to Adam without delay," the angels said, "or we will drown you!" Lilith asked: "How can I return to Adam and be his woman, after my stay beside the Red Sea?" "It would be death to refuse!"; they answered. "How can I die," Lilith asked again, "when God has ordered me to take charge of all newborn children: boys up to the eighth day of life, that of circumcision; girls up to the twentieth day? Nevertheless," she said, "I swear to you in the name of God, El, who is living and exists, that if ever I see your three names on likenesses displayed in an amulet above a newborn child, I promise to spare it." To this day they agreed; however, God punished Lilith by making one hundred of her demon children perish daily, and if Lilith could not destroy a human infant, because of the angelic amulet, she would spitefully turn against her own.
From The Alpha Bet Sira, 9th Century
This passage is excerpted from the essay "The Coming of Lilith: Toward a Feminist Theology" by Judith Plaskow. I found it in _Womanspirit_Rising_-_A_ _Feminist_Reader_in Religion_ ed. by Carol Christ and Judith Plaskow
In the beginning, the Lord God formed Adam and Lilith from the dust of the ground and breathed into their nostrils the breath of life. Created from the same source, both having been formed from the ground, they were equal in all ways. Adam, being a man, didn't like this situation, and he looked for ways to change it. He said, "I'll have my figs now, Lilith," ordering her to wait on him, and he tried to leave to her the daily tasks of life in the garden. But Lilith wasn't one to take any nonsense; she picked herself up, uttered God's holy name, and flew away. "Well now, Lord," complained Adam, "that uppity woman you sent me has gone and deserted me." The Lord, inclined to be sympathetic, sent his messengers after Lilith, telling her to shape up and return to Adam or face dire punishment. She, however, preferring anything to living with Adam, decided to stay where she was. And so God, after more careful consideration this time, caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam and out of one of his ribs created for him a second companion, Eve. For a time, Eve and Adam had a good thing going. Adam was happy now, and Eve, though she occasionally sensed capacities within herself that remained undeveloped, was basically satisfied with the role of Adam's wife and helper. The only thing that really disturbed her was the excluding closeness of the relationship between Adam and God. Adam and God just seemed to have more in common, both being men, and Adam came to identify with God more and more. After a while, that made God a bit uncomfortable too, and he started going over in his mind whether he may not have made a mistake letting Adam talk him into banishing Lilith and creating Eve, seeing the power that gave Adam. Meanwhile Lilith, all alone, attempted from time to time to rejoin the human community in the garden. After her first fruitless attempt to breach its walls, Adam worked hard to build them stronger, even getting Eve to help him. He told her fearsome stories of the demon Lilith who threatens women in childbirth and steals children from their cradles in the middle of the night. The second time Lilith came, she stormed the garden's main gate and a great battle ensued between her and Adam in which she was finally defeated. This time, however, before Lilith got away, Eve got a glimpse of her and saw she was a woman like herself. After this encounter, seeds of curiosity and doubt began to grow in Eve's mind. Was Lilith indeed just another woman? Adam had said she was a demon. Another woman! The very idea attracted Eve. She had never seen another creature like herself before. And how beautiful and strong Lilith looked! How bravely she had fought! Slowly, slowly, Eve began to think about the limits of her own life within the garden. One day, after many months of strange and disturbing thoughts, Eve, wandering around the edge of the garden, noticed a young apple tree she and Adam had planted, and saw that one of its branches stretched over the top of the garden wall. Spontaneously, she tried to climb it, and struggling to the top, swung herself over the wall. She did not wander long on the other side before she met the one she had come to find, for Lilith was waiting. At first sight of her, Eve remembered the tales of Adam and was frightened, but Lilith understood and greeted her kindly. "Who are you?" they asked each other, "What is your story?" And they sat and spoke together, of the past and then of the future. They talked for many hours, not once, but many times. They taught each other many things, and told each other stories, and laughed together, and cried, over and over, till the bond of sisterhood grew between them. Meanwhile, back in the garden, Adam was puzzled by Eve's comings and goings and disturbed by what he sensed to be her new attitude toward him. He talked to God about it, and God, having his own problems with Adam and a somewhat broader perspective, was able to help out a little - but He was confused, too. Something had failed to go according to plan. As in the days of Abraham, He needed counsel from His children. "I am who I am," thought God, "but I must become who I will become." And God and Adam were expectant and afraid the day Eve and Lilith returned to the garden bursting with possibilies, ready to build it together.

Lilith was a Demoness, not a Vampire, Caine, was a betrayer who died in, Enoch, I believe, when a house collapsed on him, Vlade, was real, but is also a supersition.

Judas, is like cain, a betrayer, but in the recent light of all things, he may not have betrayed Jesus at all.

In all Actual sense, if you go into mythical vampirism, one cannot say who was the real first. All legends are different and focus on someone or something else.

In the real sense, as in the condition, it may not have had a pregenitor, but was just an affliction, or in some cases, it was through the use of cutting one self off from an eternal silver imbellical cord to some great collective in the other world, in order to achieve immortality through remembering at our next life, we gave cut off the function to produce natural energy.

There is not set, who was the first. Not to mention, who was the first thread, has showen up about a million times.

Also anyone who believes Cain was the founder of all Vampires and from him he created three children and then they created thirteen children who then killed them, is a lying sack of dirt. That story, right there, came directly from the White Wolf Game Studios.

They are the creators of the popular game series known as Vampire the Masquerade and as of now, Vampire the Requiem.

Its funny.. Whitewolfs who entire VTM game was based on Caine being the first vampire. Of course.. his dark gifts were bestowed by Lilith.

I personaly believe there is no way to know who was the actual first vampire. (I mean real vampire old world stuff).

Does anyone know the very first vampire story, and when it was told?

It boils down to your definition of vampire again.

IMHO If you're talking about something that was first called 'vampire' (those letters in that order) you're pretty much stuck with the 1725 report of the Austrian government where villagers of Kisilovo in the Vojvodina region of Serbia reported that Peter Plogojowitz had returned from the grave.

The spelling 'vampyre' was introduced into the language seven years later (1732) when Arnold Paole was blamed for dozens of deaths of people and cattle around the town of Medvegia, Serbia. His body was staked.

If you're talking about blood drinking supernatural beings, I've always fancied the Brahmaparusha of Nortern India - they were the souls of people who had died untimely deaths, appeared as shadows, flickering lights or mists - they lived in cemetaries - when they appeared in wall paintings they were drawn with their head surrounded by intestines and drinking from skulls filled with blood. The wall paintings have been dated back to 3000BC

but as always it depends on what the mythological creature has to do to be called a vampire

Well according to the book of Nod. Lilith bestowed Cain's Vampiric gifts to him. So that would lead one to believe that she was the first Vampire.
Now according to some bibles Lilith was adams first wife before Eve. But when she refused to be submissive to Adam she was thrown out of Eden. And then some time later she was the birth mother to demons so it's is hard to say which is actually accuret

Lilith was not a vampire by any definition thereof.

She was quite arguably the first succubus, as she supposedly was rumored to extract men's semen while they slept so as to impregnate herself. You are welcome to read more about her here.

What they both do have in common is that both are examples of the inherent misogyny in Judeo-Islamic-Christian religion toward any woman who will not obey the male, will not submit to the male, and will not repress her naturally superior sexuality to the male.

Thus, Lilith was scapegoated (as were the Fallen Angels, from whence the term "scapegoat" is directly related) for her non-conformist sexuality... just as, later, those called "vampires" also were.

And in that and that alone, Lilith and "vampires" have much in common.

this is all academic - the bible is no more a reflection of true history than VtM or the novels of Ann Rice. you only have to read a few chapters to realise it is just a collection of fables penned by several different people. the first vampires probably walked this Earth long before writing was developed - or even language. many people today believe the Nephilim of legend were in actual fact half human hybrid offspring of aliens from another planet - and that conjecture is just as vaild as any claim that Lilith, Caine, Judas, or Longinious (supposedly cursed with imortality for piercing Christ with a spear).

i think that this is a rhetorical question (doesn't necessarily have an answer), due to the fact that there is too much myth surrounding this topic area, so therefore we can't truly be sure who the first was.

While certainly in agreement that the Bible cannot be taken at face value as an historical text, yet neither should it be discounted as entirely fictitious, either. Recent archeaology in the Middle-East has provided much key evidence that corroborates Old Testament accounts previously thought fictitious, such as the existence and destruction of Jericho. Thus, in recent years, many historians have had to begrudgingly reconsider their earlier appraisals of the Bible's veracity in certain areas.

And as is more relevant to this discussion, we must not forget that the accounts of the "Fallen" Angels mirror extremely similar accounts of beings from the sky (Anunnaki [Sumer}, Shemsu Hor [Egypt], Viracocha [Pre-Incas], to name only a few) who assisted in the founding of many of Earth's civilizations both in the Old World as well as here in the Americas.

The names can be found and information gotten from many great online sites. A google search will tell you much about them.

A great book that specifically discusses these legends of ancient visitors and technologies (no.... not the old "extraterrestrials" belief) is: "Fingerprints of the Gods" by Graham Hancock. Hope this helps!

Vlad Tepes was never recoded to be the slightest vampyric in any way. He merely happened to be the source of the name Bram Stoker used for his vampire chraracter in his book. So that rules out Dracula as being the first vampire, whichever way you want to look at it. Also as far as Lilith, etc go, the first culture to have recorded a ampire-like creature (damn near every culture in history has at least one of their own versions) was the chinese. I can't remember what they called it, but I know that they were the first, according to recorded history, and as far as my memory/knowlege serve me.

i accept that some of the stories in the bible are based on passed down recollections of real events - all fables have some element of truth in them; however, to accept the concept that a divine being created three people - two from clay, and one from the rib of another, and all the people in the world are descended from these three individuals flies in the face of science, and what it has taught us of evolution.

Oh, absolutely true; no doubt.

What I and some others were referring to were the Biblical accounts of the "Nephilim" ("Fallen" Angels) and their progeny, all founded on much older Sumerian myths... as also were the stories of Lilith.

Chinese isnt the only culture that has came up with vampires. Vlad Tepes was given the name of a viscious tyrant for what he had done which gave people a curious idea that he was a vampire for his behavior. People who live in romania today and other surrounding areas still run around and go "where is vlad?" its kind of odd when you think about it. Vlad was a hero and a tyrant both. ahero to some, a tyrant to others.

*according to history* May i ask where did you get this information that the chinese had the first vampire? If you got your information off the internet theres a fifty/fifty chance on that. the only true source would be through non fiction on true vampires but thats kind of hard to find because we wouldnt be so sure on where the author got his information. its like saying "i know what death is like." the only true way you know what death is like is if you were in deaths place and were reborn/ brought back to life.

I don't believe we'll ever really know. I don't believe anything that comes out of the Bible, so I don't put any stock into those references. I think that you have to look farther into the past to really find the answers...and thanks to the Roman Catholic church, any documentations that MAY have helped us more accurately determine the past have been destroyed.

Upir - When you discuss the early civilization influences of Egyptian 'gods' that were perhaps immortalized by the followers of Horus (or Shemsu Hor) or the great Viracocha (as spoken of in Graham Hancocks book for South and perhaps Mezo-America), how do you parallel that to the physiological hyper sexual vampire in your studies. I believe that the earliest Egyptian rituals were more astonomy oriented and sex was a later influence in the religions.

There is nothing in what I have read of these early 'gods' acting in such a fashion. They're usually depicted (in almost every early civilization) as an older white haired and bearded teacher who brings those ancient peoples out of savagery and into the civilized world. I haven't read of the sexual exploits of Viracocha or of the unquenchable lust of Osiris.

LovesEternalDeath & Karnstein - while the Bible isn't what I would construe as an accurate historical record throughout, Upir is right to suggest that there are some histories that have recently been proven accurately possible if not accurate in their entirety. Others are likely myths and legends that as some have suggested, were used to pass down larger truths (perhaps even mathematical and astronomical truths) in a way that would outlast the editing and re-writing of histories (which are often influenced by the political 'winners')

As for my belief in the first historical vampire...I'm fairly certain that as long as there have been folklore and myths, there have been tales of one's who feed on blood and while Upir and others may not always equate these variations as vampires, I think it speaks to a larger ingrained fear in our civilized people about the mysteries of life and the earlier as yet misunderstood values of things like blood and disease.

Regardless of her vampiric or succubus or human nature, I've always appreciated the independence and personality of Lilith as an archetype and character of literature.

I commented once before that I think she may represent powerful women of an earlier civilization wherein the genders were equal co-rulers. The myth would be a great metaphor for those women being cast out or removed from power in the creation of a more paternalistic society ...a move that likely helped cause the fall of that civilization (like Adam's fall from grace or banishment from Eden).

FelixFelix -

Great post with some great points and great questions. Given the forum focus, I shall respond generally to your points so's not to give the impression we are deviating too far from the topic. You are welcome tom message me should more details be desired.

As summarized aptly in Graham Hancock's "Footprints of the Gods", Viracocha was accompanied by a group of other "teachers," all of whom were male and all of whom were European/Caucasian in appearance. As you mentioned, they were white-haired, wore beards (a trait never before seen among the beardless races of the Americas) and blue-eyed. They taught the people arts, sciences, government, abhorred war and taught peace. This all mirrors the accounts of the Anunnaki and the Canaanite "Watchers" (bene ha elohim).

You are correct that no specific mention is made in those few ancient American accounts of their sexuality, however we must remember that when Pizarro and his Spanish Conquistadores conquered the Andes area, their Catholic zeal had them destroying anything and everything that the Church and its monks and missionaries found offensive. Even histories written down by the first explorers who attempted to minutely document the Incas' beliefs and histories as relayed to them orally were almost all burned. Understandably, any mention of overt sexuality or histories thereof would have been first on the list of items to be destroyed. Thus, who knows, frankly. Once again, Judeo-Christian ethics and twisted morality at work!

As re: Egypt, the Shemsu Hor (Followers and/or Family of Horus) were not related to Osiris (a later myth). Research the term "Demigods of Manes" (another term for the Shemsu Hor) for more info. As you will also find, this small group of "demigods" (half-human, half-god) fulfilled the same role in Egypt as the Sumerian Anunnaki.

Now, Egypt's pantheon of gods developed over the course of a few thousand years. However, there were two gods that predated all others. Horus was one. But even Horus was not as old as the first god of Egypt that existed far back into predynastic times. And that god's name was: Min (Mnu).

Min was the quintessential god of male sexual prowess and always depicted as ithyphallic (look up the term if you like). He was the "eternal firm one," known as the "owner of all females." He was... exactly as the Anunnaki and the Bene ha Elohim ("Fallen Angels") were depicted. And I'll let it go at that.

Now... was there a connection between Horus and Min? Yep... sure was. Both Horus and Min were later depicted as the son of both Isis and Osiris. (Remember, Isis and Osiris... although regarded as parents of Horus/Min... were "invented" and add to the pantheon centuries if not millennia after Horus/Min had already been worshipped from pre-dynastic times.) Thus, by this and other evidences I don't want to begin ennumerating here, Horus and Min were one and the same god.

Thus, the Shemsu Hor could also have meant Shemsu Mnu (Family of Min).

Hope all this helps. If there are further questions re: this, feel free to message me. And I apologize should this explanation be considered outside the parameters of this forum's topic. I answer only to help clarify my points re: the question of who/what was the "First Vampire."

Great points Upir...now to help me understand your meaning on the Egyptian pantheon as it relates to the Americas pantheon. Are you saying the Min should receive rightful credit for the 'civilizing' of Egypt as one of the first vampires or that Min was the vampire deity of the people of Egypt before being 'civilized' (ie during their tribal more "savage" period). If the argument is that Osiris was brought later to the pantheon but is still credited with teaching the agriculture, architecture and law, then perhaps your theory for the Americas should be one where the vampire archetype was in existence before the Viracocha came to the Inca (and similar figures to the Aztec and Mayans...and perhaps the Olmecs).

Again, it's obvious you have done some research outside my responses, for which I congratulate you. Too few bother with such things, preferring instead to rely on Hollywood and their "feelings."

As regards Min, my own research has me concluding that Min (Mnu) was the deified form of a mortal man, Egypt's first unifying ruler: King Menes (Mene). In her seminal publication "The God Min to the End of the Old Kingdom" Dr. Ann McFarlane states that only Min was ever depicted as being ithyphallic. In all of Egypt's long history, only Min (or later [post Dynasty XXII] gods depicted with Min's attributes, such as Amen) was shown with "erect phallus." And yet, in 2002 an amazing discovery was made by Dr. John Darnell. The first ever petroglyph drawing of the "Scorpion King" was found dating to 3250 BCE. Above this king figure was the motif for Horus, and the humanoid figure itself is clearly depicted as... ithyphallic. Now, as only one figure to have ever been represented as ithyphallic in Egyptian antiquity (Min) yet in this "Scorpion Tableau", both are so depicted, as the name Min (Menu) coincides so closely with Mene (Meni), and as the god Min is depicted in mummiform (legs close together and wrapped, indicated a post-mortem deification), it seems more than probable that King Menes was a living descendant of the demi-god Shemsu Hor (the Egyptian version of the Anunnaki, who likewise assisted in unifying Egypt and teaching the new nation that they helped to create the basic skills needed to begin what became the world's most prolific civilization in history.

And King Menes, following his death, was remembered and deified not for any of his amazing accomplishments as a great warrior and leader, but instead... he was deified for what the Egyptians considered a far more "prolific" skill: his unique sexual capacity.

Now... getting back to the subject of "vampires." As I have tried repeatedly to make clear, if you are seeking "blood-drinking," evil, parasitic beings (as we, today, view them) in the Anunnaki or Shemsu Hor or even the Judaic "Fallen Angels," you won't. These evil characteristics were deliberate lies told by those who conquered Sumer and Egypt, those who slaughtered what descendants they could find, and later in the Christian (Common) Era, the Christian authorities likewise vilifying the descendants as evil so as to scare females and general populations and incite further violence against them.

They were never what we consider "Vampires," but they are most definitely the truth behind the "Vampire" lies and legends that have come down to us through the ages.

They were, indeed, the First "Vampires."

I keep seeing Cain come up. I know that in the White Wolf, Vampire the Masquerade Game, Cain is thought of to be the first Vampire..

Outside of White Wolf, have I missed something? Is there somewhere else where Cain is thought of to be the first Vampire?

you guys paint these images in your head of the first vampire but you listen to the altered storys about them. when really it could of been a man/woman who just drank blood to stay healthy. i dont know but no-one will ever know who the first was. it that matters is that we are hear now.

in my strict opinion...most people on this site clame to be non religion folowers yet when it comes to the first vampire its cain or lilith...
lets put the story here
lilith was adams first wife yet she got chucked out of eden then eve came and had children with adam...cain killed his brother n got cursed. out side of eden people grew old so by the time the whole killing able thing happened lilith must of grown old by 16-25 years. now later stories of cain tells he had children with lilith. by my books if all this is true lilith would of been too old to have children in them days. there was no-one to write it...and the story of adam and eve was to strick fear to all those that go against god

so in my opinion there was no cain or lilith...it was most likely a man/woman drinking animal blood to stay heathy since well back in them days (after christ) they tryed everything...so the word gets out and is giving a name most likely again as the man/womans name.

Well, it seems clear that there are some who are willing to simply ignore the developed conversation and instead, post a non-contributary 'vote' instead.

Very disappointing.

But, since the site itself is located in a pro-Christian democracy, with many of it's inhabitants being educated within that particular form of society, it is sure to mean a higher percentage of people coming to view the biblical/mythical as a frame of reference, which, with the popular media influence, provides an image, onto which to present the personal wished for aspects of the vampire.

As a result, personal preference to something exciting, emotive and powerful, leads the mind to believe in the fantastical.

Appreciating the seperation between the actualities of vampirism and the mythos, makes all the difference- between recognising signs of psychosis and submitting to them.

Lilke most of these threads it all hinges on your definition of a vampire.

If you think that a vampire is something that feeds on a human somehow, then a secubus is a vampire and Lillith is a fair reply.

If you follow the link that Upir supplied you'll see that not only is Lilith referred to as a 'demon or vampire' but she is also mentioned alongside the Greek Lamia which were mythological blood sucking creatures who ate children

If the thread keeps a wide definition of vampire, then Lilith is surely one of many answers

i don't think the first vampire had a name. the first vampire probably started to drink blood long before we had language and speech - let alone names.

Please read the rest of the posts before leaving responses like "cain", "lilith", etc. There have been plenty of posts that debunk these fallacies, and it's a waste of space for people to keep writing the same WRONG things.

If indeed the condition was an evolution, then there couldn't really be a "first" vampire. If the condition resulted from, as scionofrequiem said, the severing of the "silver umbilical cord" and disconnecting from the universal energy source or what have you, then the first could be any number of people, and it's already been discussed that the first predates fictional biblical references.

I can see where you're coming from but, with the very greatest of respect, I do not think that if someone can justify their opinion they can be called wrong - be it Lilith, Cain or whoever.

This whole thread is not going to reach a conclusion, just a lot of different opinions. In some case these opinions are based on other learned people's opinions - but it doesn't make them any more or less valid.

I do though wish people would add comment with their opinion and explain why they have that opinion.

To be frank, I seriously doubt a lot of the people who contunuously post one-word answers are getting their opinions from genuine sources. Again, as scion pointed out, some people are even referencing stories written by video game corporations! It just aggravates me.

How can we know? legends of vampires predate the Bible, and most forms of written histories. the Sumerians even had pics of vampire like creatures in their civilization.
It would be nearly impossible to know the exact beginning. the root. The greeks, Sumarians, mesopitamians, all had thier version. Even the Akkaidians. so the first one would most likely be nameless.

I think you mean predate the Birth of Christ not the bible (the book itself was a lot later and its contents cover creation of the planet)

You're right of course - the answer will not be found on here while we use such a wide definition of the word 'vampire'

I THINK IT'S CAIN BECAUSE IT IS HIM THAT GOD CURSED INTO DARKNESS AFTER HE KILLED HIS BROTHER. ON THE OTHER HAND, LILITH WHO WAS ADAM'S FIRST WIFE, ONLY TAUGHT HIM THE WAYS OF BECOMING A VAMPIRE. SHE TAUGHT CAIN ON HOW TO USE HIS POWERS AND OTHER THINGS ABOUT HIS NEW SELF...

I have read that Lilith was the first vampire per se. But I have also heard that vampires were around way before that.

Cynicism and more Cynicism. Add a mix of Religious Zealot, and a dash of VtM. Thats the mix for the day.

My two cents? Here it goes.

The first vampire? I doubt there was a single entity that started any of the belief systems out there. Unless the person was truly immortal, and had proven it by popping up throughout history for the past 6,000+ years. I read many people saying Lilith was a true demon, that she was the first. Or that Cain(e) was the first. Come'on. History stretches back much further than even the babysteps of todays Ruling Religions.

Second... All speculation aside, I would think the first vampire would be someone off the given radar blip. He/she would be cloaked in an obscurity of time we likely couldn't gap.

On a Romantic note, I kind of like the Lilith story in general. Liberation with a price.

could have been cain, it's hard to really say for sure on that though, only because to come to that conclusion you have to go from one source (aka the bible) to the texts that have already been brought up about the story of cain and lilith... which is hard to piece together in my mind only because i don't remember lilith being mentioned in the genesis account.

my belief is that it was either the first of the "earth-bound" angels, or even their children, the nephalim.
the nephalim were said to have feasted on humans... well whole, not just blood, but due to their size it would have been easier to get blood just by devouring them. at least that's what i remember... i'd have to go back and re-verify that.

when it comes down to it though... we'll never really know unless by some miracle a text can be found that says "...the first vampire, ________...". other than that we'll just have to decide for ourselves whom we choose to view as "first/god of vampires"

You look to see the name of the first vampire there ever was but that’s a really big can of worms to work with but cause as you can see every thought on it comes from the bible. The problem with that is that if it where really from the God based religion that fallows that book then there wouldn’t be any of us here, we wouldn’t be aloud to coexist on the plane as the ones he created. No the very first vampire was an entity that came here looking to take over this plane as his new realm. Now here is where it gets fuzzy you can take ether one of two paths looking at this and just go with it.

1). The being that came here looking to rule us, found love here and breed with on of the people that he looked to rule over and so in doing so created a half human half (what ever you want to call the other being) and in doing so created a new race of being known as Vampires.

2). This thing that here looked for a way to prolong his life by feeding off the life energy that is held in blood. This being has a name but please don’t ask me to spell it or say it for I would butcher it so badly that it wouldn’t matter.

Now it you want to go down to path that was laid out for us in the Bible then the very first vampire was created from the off shut of a fallen angle and human and there are about a hundred different reasons that this new breed needs to feed on blood in the beginning but you must remember that as a race human is the most adaptive thing on this planet.

Boy, has this topic hopped all OVER the place! From Sumerian and Judaic mythology on.

Before we can answer the question of who was first, it must first be determined what it is we are looking for (i.e., what the term "vampire" means). And therein lies the real issue.

If we define vampire as a blood-sucking or energy-draining creature, then Lilith is not a vampire as she was never reputed to suck blood nor drain energy. And Cain is no where to be found here as he was simply a murderer, committing the first case of fratricide according to the Bible.

In fact, to find blood suckers in actual vampire lore, you have to go all the way to the 17th-18th Century CE for blood sucking claims, which themselves were false assumptions made due to dug-up corpses being found with what appeared to be fresh blood in their bodies. As for energy-draining beliefs, this came far later than that, even.

The only truly indisputable place to begin seeking the "first vampire" is to seek the origins of the term "vampire," itself. And we know without a doubt that "vampire" directly derives from the 11th Century word "Upir'." Prior to the 11th Century, no such word existed. Thus, arguably, neither did whatever possible "first" such creature as was called a "vampire."

And if this logical train of thought is correct, then the only truly definitive first vampire by both etymology and characteristics of same as then existed must have been, yet again:

"Father Upir' Likhyj," the Novgorodian Eastern Orthodox Christian priest of 1047 CE.

And if so... then, as this priest was obvioiusly not immortal, did not fear crucifixes, was not demonic, and presumably could not have been a Christian priest while also drinking blood (which belief did not even exist re: vampires until over 500 years later), then whatever unique characteristics this priest might have had, it was not at all similar to what we today term "vampirisim."
