Many people have the ability to know they are dreaming and be able to make things happen in their dreams. I have always wanted to control my dreams seeing as i have a lot of nightmares.
I have only been able to do this one time and it was surreal. and amazing. I was able to levitate, make things appear and disappear. it was empowering.
does anyone know how to hone this skill or has anyone had any experiences controlling their dreams? i would love to hear about it.
I've never been able to control my dreams, sometimes I wish I could, but I just can't seem to
Dreams actually come from thoughts in your mind, so maybe if you were terrified as a child, the thoughts are still at the back of your mind and come to you in your dreams.
I'm not sure of being able to control them, but that's what I know.
I'm not sure I can tell you how to accomplish this. Some dreams can not be altered, they are the way they are for a reason. Other simple dreams like nightmares can be controlled by simply facing the fear, knowing that you are in your world where you make the rules. Once your mind has grasped this concept you can do anything. I suggest meditating before bed, focus on controlling your thoughts. Hope I was some help!
I was never able too, but I have been told that you can programm yourself to have certain dreams and events in it if you repeat to your mind from the time oyu go to bed till you fall asleep what you want in it.
Fo expemple: I want to ride a pony
i've heard about this ability, but usually i'm the "victim" of my dreams, not the controlling one...
ive tried that crying mist... but im not sure thats how my experience happened.
Im usually the victim too broomhilda, thats how come i wanted to control them. But even when my dreams arent bad, i think it would jus be nice to create my own lil movie in my head.
I aswell, am the victim of my dreams. I have no idea as how to control you´re dreams, but Inm sure its extremly hard. Since your conciousness is resting and you have no control of your subconciousness, i have no clue how thsi can be achieved.
I assume it is possible to learn to control your subconciousness and manipulate it in order to conrol your dreams, but I have never been able to do it.
Well,I was told that if you dream about being in a house..Try to turn the lights on or off.Once you are able to controll that..then you can do almost anything in a dream.Somthing about..If you dream about anything that on or doing somthing..and if you can shut it off..then its your dream to controll.
i too have had dreams like you have... I would keep a "dream Journal" but this is something that i have done since before i chose my path.. ( I am Pagan). I would read through my journals after one of these dreams after writing it down and compare them... I then would think of ways ( just before i goto sleep) of dealing with the situations.. How i could hae done this or that.. after that I was able to alter some things in my dreams/nightmares to my advantage.. It has worked for me many times.. I took it upon myself to try this and it worked.. hope this will work for you.
I've been able to control my dreams a few times and yes it is awsome, but I think you get lucky when you know your dreaming and are able to control them but sometimes you get unlucky and when you know your dreaming you wake up. So I guess when you know your dreaming try not wake up and control away.
ive never really controlled my dreams but i wish i could a lot of times
I've tried countless time to guide my dreams in a certain direction and found it kind of hard. Wish I could though.
Even if I could... I am not sure I would want to. Dreams have always been a way for me to process all the junk that seeps into my subconscious during the day. Sometimes dreams are a way to forsee the future as well... I'm not sure if you could still do those things if you exerted control over your subconscious and your dreams.
I can't control my dreams at all. Never been able to at all
the dream journal is an excellent idea. what you are describing (the ability to control dreams) is called lucid dreaming. it is a form of out of body experience. i am unskilled in this. when i realize i am dreaming i wake up. :(
mostly, it's learning to control your thoughts and learning to control your waking process to avoid 'waking up'. realization of dreaming is often times what causes one to wake up.
I agree with the dream journal idea. It is a good first step to help you bring the conscious mind closer to the unconscious one. Eventually you will be able to "wake up" the conscious mind enough to be dreaming and be "aware" that you are actually dreaming before you actually awaken. It is at this point when you can start actually controlling and changing your dreams. Although this does take practice, it can be achieved. Meditation also helps this process due to the deep states on consciouness achieved in proper TM.
it is very rare for me not to be able to alter or stop a dream. I do now and then have ones.. night mares of real memories as a rule that I can do nothing but force myself to wake.
I was taught long ago as part of my early childhood to early teens and even a bit after that.. training with my fathers people. to contorl my dream becuase it was a step to controling the area around me when I went spiritwalking. Its such an ingrained thng to me now tht I am not really able to say do this and then this then this.
the journal will help you as you may start to see paterns to avoid or that you wish to repeat.. relizeing them and being aware they are there is the first steo to being able to repeat or leave them. Its a great deal of simply relizeing you CAN do it. and getting your mind to truely accept this idea
I used to suffer from night terrors as a child usually relating to my legs but the dreams used to cause mild paralysis until i was fully conscious.
over the years i have been able to control the dreams, i can phase them out so they become background murmurs. but this does mean that when i am under stress i have difficulty doing this. though they arnt as bad as hey were
there were several times that i had controlled my dreams but i didn't know that i was doing it till lately.
before sleeping, im thinking of things and people and when i dream, its them is see. sometimes, when i fell asleep worrying about my problems and it turned out that i worry it again on my dreams, its either i found solution in my dreams or it only worsens.
well, there's nothing wrong trying it..
i have controlled my dreams and still surf though others too but its a curse of sorts for me
I'm not sure, I've heard people say you can use hypnosis to do it but I'm skeptical, plus one of the greatest things are the unpredictability of your dreams
shoot, and here I thought I would be the first to suggest writing things down.....
I used to suffer from nightmares a lot, and one thing that helped me was to write my dreams down and look for common threads.
Many more open psychotherapists also suggest it.
The tough part is proper interpretation. Most people I trust abhor the 'interpret your dreams!" books.
Hope the thread helps you.
wow so many great ideas. i havent written in a dream journal in a long time. its def something i should get back into the habit of doing. like i was saying, i was only able to controll my dream once... and i did not wake up feeling refreshed at all , in fact, i felt drained, like i hadnt slept at all.
Someone (sorry after reading through everyones response, i forget who said this) mentioned controlling their dreams and surfing others... does that mean it is possible to enter into someone else's dream? that must take some sort of mental power that i might not have.
Don’t think I can help you with how to do it but I know I have been able to control my dreams on a few occasions. Usually though when I realize I’m dreaming and try to control it, I wake up.
ok i have never been able to have a dream for some reasone i mean its like im not in anything anywere but darkness in my mind its like this or this is wat happens to me
im falling into a skulls mouth and nothing else happens
that is wat happens for the most of my drams
Dreams can be powerful interpretations of the subconscious mind. At times I feel I can control my dreams but other times I just want to see what's going to happen next. There could be a message hidden in the madness.
I think that the dream journal is an excellent idea. I keep a journal for my time awake, so why not for my time asleep. As far as controlling your dreams, I have no problem being in control of my good dreams. Unfortunately, my night mares have total control of me. I never really thought about how to control dreams. I think it is something that you have to do by trial and error. While you are dreaming, and are aware that you are, try doing things in your dreams. Start with simple things and when you master that, gradually start trying more complex things.
Just as an afterthought, consider this: the times where I remember dreams/ realize that I'm dreaming all are in the morning hours when I'm trying to sleep in. It's a good idea to note when you are actually realizing that you're dreaming and see if there is a pattern to the hours in which this happens. That can be a good place to target learning to control your dreams.
i once had this night mare ..where these me broke in my house when and starteattacking my family downstairs and i could hear them and i ws so scared i tried to wake up but couldnt .. it was like i was awake and could think normal and do that i do normal so i ran down stairs with my wicca book and cast this powerful protection spell .. my eyes were crying blood .. werid thing was that when idid wake up ..i knocked my wicca book of my bedside tale and it opened at the spell i had used in dream .....
werid isnt it .. i dream this dream alot and it reminds me spells should only be used in emerencies
Undoubtedly, you can. You ave tolearn to givein to you rsubcinscou furst. Thats the had part Thendibelieve e laws of graitvy snd gorce-fed imsginstion
well, dreams are pictures and that are all mixed together as a video....controlling it would be difficult and the way to help is to think of what you will do in ur dream and have an idea of what youn want to dream about before sleeping...
I was able to control only one of my dreams. It was very neat.
i can control 80% of mine and get into my old dreams too
Well,
just relax.
Please always keep in mind, that some dreams are really ment to be as they are and to tell you something important. Thus a journal as already mentioned is a first step. Try to interprete your dreams and compare them to the things wich happened the last day(s). All dreams perfectly matching events a few days ago might be just 'work ups' of your subconciousness, non the less they already tell you important things:
- what you did note processed while awake completely
- what your soul really tooked close
- how to interprete your subconciousness.
Another first step to get to the lucid dreaming as Jenova yet explained, is to ask yourself at least a few times a day, mostly in strange situations, wether you are dreaming or awake. Try to focus and get control (mind) of your conciousness.
This will help you to determine your actual state (sleeping/awake) more easy in your dreams.
Don't haste, it may take a few days or a few weeks, until your first in dream realizations may appear.
Most people (also yet mentioned) wake up as soon as they realize they are dreaming.
Often the half a sleep moments bear the greatest potential to stay in your dream. This again might take weeks, so no worry here, no pressing.
Just continue relaxed as ever to ask yourself every day a few times, wether you are awake or dreaming.
Before but starting to change your dreams again please make sure to complete the journal and learning about how yourself speaks subconciously about you. It will help a lot to be prepared...like the resolve of what to dream and the easing of the resolve by having things related to this right before slumber.
I beg your pardon for my bad grammer/style, but I am a native German. Hope you can read and understand it anyways.
Some times I can change my dream. I'm not sure how I do it. And some times I can't do it.
It is called "Lucid Dreaming", and I usually know when I'm dreaming, and can take control.
I really enjoy my dreamworld and am usually pissed off when I wake up.
Jenova - I can say the same actually. Most of the times that occured was in the morning just before I'd have normally woke.
Hello,
Yes, actually, this is known sometimes to be a lucid dream.... You usually have to know you are in a dream but thinking of something before falling asleep and knowing you are in control, If you can do this you can wake up in the middle of your dream or even control it to your liking...
I know how you feel... I have had the same nightmare over and over for the past month and i can not get rid of it... i have tried everything but i always end up died and looking down at my mangeled body
A few people mentioned that once you realize you are dreaming you wake up. Yes this does happen, but I find that if I don't allow myself to move or stretch I can fall back into my dream state. Unless someone disturbs me, which is usually the case.
im pretty sure ive done that a couple of times.
but if you know you are in a dream you wake up so you have to know you are in a dream without thinking it
what about those dreams where you think you wake up, but you are really still asleep? Those are creepy.
scorpnoire and jenova u both raise awesome points.
i also realize im dreaming right when im waking up. the one lucid dream i did have i did actually sleep walk. and i turned on the air conditioner. some of it actually happened. i was highly confused and exhausted when i woke up. but that only happend one time my whole life.
Pheonix, i always dream that i wake up, wash my face, get dressed get into the car... then bam. i open my eyes and im awake but i feel even more tired and its even harder to get up. it screws with my day when that happens.
i always find that when im not exacly asleep but not awake that i can controll my dreams i dont know how but i always wake up in the middle n sometimes i can even lay back down n control it...wierd lol
I have found that a really great way to control my dreams is to go to bed thinking about what I would like to dream about and only that. I know that that sounds really corny but it works for me!
I can control most of my dreams except for my nightmares and have been found sleeping on the ceiling......
sleeping on the ceiling. that's a long way to fall upon awakening.
I used to control my dreams all the time. I had so much control over them That I could reenter my dreams and change them.
when you know your dreaming start by trying to manipulate little things like what colour things appear. Before you know it you'll control your nightmares.
I have fallen in many of my dreams and landed ( which experts say if you land you die in real life) and was able to get up and walk away.
Oddly enough think of your dream like the movie the Matrix.
Then one day I woke up and it seemed that i wasn't even having dreams anymore.
its somethign that gets easier and more......intricate with experience and practice. its fun. And it helps u leanr a lot about urself (if u concentrate on the dreams and their plot) there are loads of books and sites about it. but its just oen fo thsoe things that u get better at wth practice.
if i were to look it up i would search for lucid dreaming?
It is only recently that when I am dreaming, that I know I am dreaming..if that makes sense. In those instances, however, I do awake, reason with myself and then go back into the dream to control the outcome. However, this cannot work every time as it depends how deep my REM sleep is.
It does take a while, and practise. As I said I can't control the outcome of all of my dreams. Sometimes it is impossible to re-enter it.
ive done that a couple of times..though i dont really know how i did it..i just think of what i want to dream and it just happens and i can manipulate my dream, its like im the director of a movie..its was fun but there was an incident that makes me scared when im dreaming..
IGhost: That is the whole thing, being scared in a dream indicates a time in your sub-conscious where if possible you need to wake up, and tell yourself that you are not, before going back into the dream again.
well first i learned how to wake myself up from my nightmares. Then i learned how to take control and change it.
to wake up i would imagine me in my dream closing my eyes and picturing me in my head and forcing myself to wake up. But you have to have a strong desire and will to do it. fear is usually a good motivator :) for those nightmares.
There is a way u can control your dreams I havent figured it out yet. I know in lucid dreams u can . There are also ways u can bring stuff out . Maybe Im wrong . I tend to believe that and u can control it better
MNL..that is something similiar to what I do myself, you have to get out first and then re-arrange your thought pattern and get back in again. Umm, if that makes sense..it is not all of the time that I actually succeed or not, and as I mentioned earliert for me it actually depends a) how deep the sleep is and b) what stage the sleep is at.
In a different thread, Sabre talked about Papworth Hospital in England, and how they look at sleep patterns. The studies they conducted revealed a lot in this subject :)
i know how you feel i have many times tried to controol me dreams but i have never gotten to the hate in my nightmares is to sstrong i cn not over come it
I once read that if you wanna be able to do any sort of dream controling that before you fall asleep...plan out the dream, whats going to happen, wheres the setting, stuff of that sort
I'm a very lucky person to be able to control my dreams
You have to think about what you want to dream that night
You have to say, "I won't dream about ____. I wanna dream about ____. I will dream about ____."
I love to dream about being characters in my favorite shows, so I think about dreaming it before I go to sleep.
Music might also help if you can sleep with music.
I tend to have better dreams with lighter, happier songs and darker dreams when I listen to heavier stuff.
Christian Gospel seems to have a HUGE effect on making your dreams better and free of demons. It totally works for me.
i think if we control them they loose there true meaning
well I manage to control my body if I am trap in a dream I cant control or that scares me or hurts me then I concnetrate on moving my head form left to right or shaking my leg, I concnetrate so hard I litterally wake myself up by shaking my head or my legg or sometimes my hand, t works.
the 1st trick to controling your dreams is knowing when you are dreamin. usually something will not be quite right in a dream if you can spot it then you will be aware youre dreaming. now the hard part not waking up when you spot it. if you do wake up dont move or you will have a hard time getting the dream back. lay stil and keep the last image in your mind but dont concentrate to hard on it or you'll have a difficult time going back to sleep. just relax and keep the image in mind like a memory of something. probably one of the easiest controlls to learn and most useful is a change of perspective from 1st person to 3rd person so that instead of being directly involved in the dream you can just watch it. dreams are easier to control in a 3rd person mode then you can work on controling them in 1st person mode. work on it 1st with daydreams helps too and if you really want to work hard on it keep yourself up as long as possible without stimulants making it less likely you'll wake up. hope that helps
SycoxPenguin: yea, I also have an idea what I am going to dream of before I go to sleep. It is usually about work, sad lol
for some reason it doesnt work out when i repeat things that i want to dream in my head. Or if i meditate and clear my head. maybe i shouldnt try so hard.
Nice thread BloodLust.. I have enjoyed listening to everyones view on this :)
I have to go with Nyte on this one. Basically, to gain "control" over your dream, just changed your thoughts. Often times when I want to "relive" a dream, or am having a bad dream that I can't handle, I either A. Wake myself up, or B. Think of something different.
once you reallize that you are dreaming you will be in control. Only problem is that usually when you reallize that you are dreaming you wake up, usually.
Like most it would be nice to control my dreams but I really dont know that one can... I am going to try what alot of you has sugested.. the dream journal and so on... there are some i have that i cant wake right up from and are so really even when i do wake up... there usally the bad dreams!
what if all you dream is about your past nightmares are just re living the memorys... thats my problem... my dreams become so real that I have re broken bones woken with bruises and everything.... I have gotten to the point that the only way to control them is to not sleep... if you don't sleep you don't dream
Wikipedia has quite a bit on "lucid Dreaming" including how to learn to promote lucid dreams.
I had to learn to control a dream when in college. It was a nightmare and the creature in my dream was sitting on my chest and suffocating me. I would wake gasping for breath and terrified. I read a few books..amd the biggest things I found was that right before sleep I should concentrate on BEING IN CONTROL. Then I would imagine getting rid of the creature and breathing easily. Eventually, I was able to do it for REAL in the dream and KNOW that I was the one in control and getting rid of the creature. It took time and practice tho.
I wish you luck.
Dark Kaos, you awake with broken bones after dreaming?? I find this difficult to digest, even without being in my usual blonde state! Pain is the first thing that will wake you out of a dream, and the first practise even in medical terms to awake new born babies into the world!
I've heard of this. the only thing is not all actually have the ability to do this while asleep. Sometimes you can dream and be awake while laying down. if your dreams are going your way then you may just b awake and thinking of how you want them. So shut down your brain at night and try to see how it goes
Quote me references to this Sorrow, and then I will eat my hat. In the meantime I will remain sceptical.
did someone alredy answer that. if so i apologize but i only put down what i believe. i only read the first one then i scrolled down here and put in my thots. so sry, i need to learn to read the other posts first
being imaginative can also help..thats what i know..coz i use my imaginations a LOT..ive experienced a lot about dreaming..ive tried dreaming being aware that im awake..ive tried dreaming and then i woke up feeling like im falling..then i tried dreaming and then a spirit or somthing tried to stop me from waking up..
Lucid dreaming is different from controling your dreams.
Both have their bennefits, and scorpnoire did a wonderful job of explaining one way to help train yourself to control your dreams.
I should add that it isn't total control, more of an ability to keep the tone of the dream where you would like it. That is my preferred way of dreaming. Still the big messages come through from my sub conscious- but the overall tone of the dream, I keep in a positive area. So I can have things occur that I would normally associate with nightmares, but because I maintain a positive emotion to my dreaming, rarely do my dreams disturb me. Actually, it's almost comical when I think on it.
As for LucidDreaming, I think that is far more intense in the few times I have had it happen, and like was said you maybe groggy after it so make sure you don't have something important to do the next day.
i realize, that when im really exhausted is when i have the more realistic dreams. the past 2 weeks i ve been working with only one day off and with friends and everything i was up late and i havent been dreaming at all this week. at least not anything i can remember.
as for waking up with broken bones, that is outrageous to me, tho i have heard of people hurting themselves in their sleep... it s called night terrors. but i never knew them to be that serious.
I wonder, do dreams follow any patterns in families?
My grandfather was prone to very vivid dreams, mainly nightmares...so vivid that anyone awake around him was very aware that he was dreaming. I also have very vivid dreams and have since I was adolescent. They are mainly nightmares and really affect my ability to feel well rested.
I know that I certainly have never experienced any ability to control them, and I even went to a specialist for a time with no practical solutions in the end.
I have a really good life and a dream job. I have never been able to sort out any reason for having nightmares, so I ask again...do you think we could be genetically coded to have bad dreams?
thats a good question. im not quite sure of the answer but i would guess that dreams are for reasons. and each dream for each person is individual. I dont necessarily think that nightmares could be passed on from generation to generation. ive had nightmares my whole life, no one else in my family has them like i do. so i personally think its on an individual basis rather than a genetic thing.
I think genetics could explain some of the initial setup in one's brain and that could lead to heightened REM state or perhaps more brain activity in sleep. I don't know that I can square with the idea of inherited nightmares.
One thing that I've found interesting about dream journals is that they can actually increase your memory of your dreams as well as lead to more lucid dreaming. The act of immediately recording your dreams puts us in the habit of concentrating on our dreams immediately upon waking up instead of being distracted by the usual things in waking (alarms, getting ready, thinking about the day ahead, etc). I have found that it's also helpful to repeat to yourself the night before, that you'll remember your dreams upon waking...and you will.
Dreams do have a way of slipping into your life even while awake. The trick, knowing when you are sleeping and awake.
I would also like to know how to control my dreams because I frequently have nightmares as well.
Some times i can bring myself out of a dream, sometimes i cant, depending on how deep an alpha state i,m in.its horrible when you have a nightmare and you cant bring yourself out of it.one time i put my fist through my bedroom window whilst still in dream state.
I wish I could control mine cause an incident back in november has made me have alot of bad dreams and I would prefer to not have them. :)
Sometimes you can control them, but it is very rare. Also if you want to know the answe to something, you can get that in your dream.... I first encountered this when a close friend died... He commited suicide... In my dream i saved him many different ways, the first time i ever intervened in any of my dreams... And if something is tugging at my soul i think , really soul search on it before i lay down, then i clear thoughts and fall asleep, and it comes to me in my dream....
The dreams I have are usually so wild and amusing that I would never want to control them..
I have never been able to control my dreams, but I was thinking about it and was wondering if that is even a good idea? I think it's best to leave it alone and let the dream come to me as it should and have a purpose, instead of me changing it.
I want to control my nightmares..I lose control..Any suggestions?
Much like any other talent that you want to refine you must practice. I love to control my dreams. I've done it for years and it can be a lot of fun. I've gotten to the point that if I'm having a really great dream I can kind of pause it and next time I'm asleep I can pick up the thread. It takes a lot of practice to guide a dream but it is very easy to do once you convince yourself that you ARE dreaming.
I have herd of this , but I`m not able to do it though..
i think that if you were to mediate before you went to bed and meditated exactly on the thing you want, then you may be able to hone in on it...
I've controlled my dreams before. what I do is picture a storyline on the way to sleep
