Ok. I was going to post this in Sacred's thread on Curses, but then I thought that it might do just fine on its own. :D
The other day I went to the store and made a few purchases. When I checked out my total came to $6.66. The cashier, without me saying a word, promptly changed the amount. I couldn't help but laugh.
THEN, the other day at work (I'm a waitress) I had a customer ask me to add to his ticket because his total was $6.66. He said that just the day before he'd lost his motorcycle to a fire and that while helping to extinguish the flames, his father had a heart attack. He said that he really didn't need any more bad luck. I laughed and asked, "Are you really that superstitious?" He said, "Aren't you?" No, I'm not. I think that in order for it to have power then we have to give it that power. Which is what I said...kinda. I took off a nickel though 'cause I'm just that nice. :D
So, my question is about stuff like that. If you get $6.66 as a total do you want it changed? Or do you think that 13 is an unlucky number? Like would you refuse to live on the 13th floor? What if your address was 666 Harper Ln--would you feel as though your house was cursed?
If you have any other numbers that you tend to avoid, please share! In the movie (and book) Where the Heart Is, the girl stayed away from the number 5. She bought shoes at Wal-Mart and her total was $5.55...she ran outside to find that her loser boyfriend had left her there--pregnant too. Then on her daughter's 5 month birthday, she was kidnapped by religious fanatics (the baby). So on and so forth.

I personally stay away from friday 13.alway seems to be a bad day for me.
Wow what a post in a forum. Ive always figured that 13 was my LUCKY number because thats the only time anything seems to go right for me.(LOL JOKING) However i try not to be superstitious. For example im the type of person that will walk under a scaffold or under the ladder or open the umbrella up inside of my house to just prove a point to the overly superstitious ones in my family. Ive seen the movie Where The Heart Is, that was a bit odd that 5 was a number for her that never seemed to work. I agree that we make our own good or bad luck. When i was younger growing up in a house of a bunch of older adults salt was thrown over the shoulder, they always knocked on wood to make sure things would go right,13 was the unluckiest number ever & they always drew a cross over the windshield of the car when a black cat crossed their paths....It was just cray in the house all the time, but now that im grown i just dont really see the point behind it all, but maybe thats only me & because i grew up around it. Ive seen people act very strange when they got change back or their bill was 6.66. Actually i find it funny because my husky akela when we picked her up in salem arkansas we clocked the mileage & it was 666 miles from columbus ohio to their to pick her up. Havent had any "bad luck" with my little devil other than shes still a pup & loves to chew...LOL Al im saying is that i just think you make your own luck be it good or bad but thats only my opinion amongst hundreds of others...
People either are or aren't superstitious. Personally 13 is a lucky number for me (alwaze has been), as is 7 and 42.
The other day we were raising a ladder against a building and a pedestrian walked to the other side of the street instead of crossing near the ladder. When I mentioned it to a fellow ff, he said "yeah... the bad luck only happens if you walk UNDER the ladder... not BY the ladder.
What? Numbers are that just numbers, for your friend, sorry but her boyfriend seems like a total loser.
i have never really had any superstitions. I LOVE Friday the 13th. I always joked around that i want to get married on an October Friday the 13th (sort of a late birthday present for me due to my birthday being on the 11th of October)
when it comes to $6.66 i laugh my butt off. I find it funny and amusing and i have no problem with it.
I am not afraid of black cats. I love black cats and wouldn't mind owning one.
People are jus silly if they are superstitious
*walks under a ladder* eh i think its fun walking under ladders. haha!
its just a mind or mentality thing, superstition is over rated
I dont' walk under ladders simply because I dont' want to take the chance of someone falling on me >_>
The last time I bought things that came to $6.66 I shouted "OH NO! It's the receipt of the beast!"
People looked at me kinda strange, but meh.
=P
666 is not a problem for me.. kinda have to buy into the Satan myth for that to be a problem.
I went to help a friend move and she was all babbeling that she was so glad they got on the 14th floor cause the 13th would be bad etc. I was in the elevator with her and blinked watching the lights and started laffing my ass off. When I calmed down enough to talk I asked ehr to actually say the numbers as they lit up.. she did 10.. 11.. 12... 14... she almost demaned a new apt when it hit her she DID live on the 13th floor lol. I thought it was cool personally
I agree with wolfysnightmare and some others 13 is my lucky number as well...and I love Friday the 13, we usually throw a big party on those nights. I also have no problem walking past my huge black cat Jack (sometimes, I even feed him..lol). No, I'm no superstitious at all.
OMG Feline that cracks me up. I also think its silly that contractors and builders would 'skip' the 13th floor its silly.
LOL, I should remember that too next time I am on a building site..maybe I would get the day off!
Only if the packaging says "New and Improved"... Oh wait... you meant superstitious. No... I'm not.
most hotals do not have a 13 floor and road 666 was changed to 667 were i live.i dont stay away from any number but when my dad was in the Air force he was working on a fighter 666 and some creepy stuff started to happen so they added another number its now 6662.
I just laugh at that stuff. Allowing a number that you give power to to control your actions and thoughts is a little...off to me. It's funny that people make patterns and connections where initially there are none.
Reminds me of the movie "Number 23" with Jim Carrey. It was an interesting movie but I kept thinking "what is wrong with you?? you're making this up!!" lol
If my bill came to 6.66, while I have no problem with that number, I would be happy if their own superstition lead them to charge me 6.65 :)
Superstitions don't have any power unless you give it to them. I've had $6.66 as a total and nothing bad happened. Granted, I don't walk under ladders but that's just me being smart.
yep i am supertitious about that . i donno maybe thats what plays in my mind and maybe thats psychological.
Yeah I can be superstitious..
...If you have a bloody nose, tilt and pinch. If that doesn't work, try rubbing your eyes with a pickle
numbers don't scare me because that's all they are. actually i don't really have any superstitions, i will knock on wood occasionally if i say something that could jynx something else, but other than that i don't have any beliefs in them what so ever.
superstitions only have the power that you subconciously give them
How about a more proactive approach on getting a bill in an amount that is undesireable...order something else...
i tend to stay away from the numbers 666 but other than that my favorite number is 13.lol
I'll admit if I see superstitious numbers like 666, 13, 9:11 (cause of the terrorist attacks), or 11:11 (don't know why about that one though) I tend to feel a little uneasy. But I agree with you, these superstitions probably have some power because we give it to them.
I'm superstitious to some degree. I personally believe that the number 13 is lucky- and that 666 and all the hype behind it is just fiction.
And when a black cat crosses my path- I just smile. I don't find these things unlucky at all
I've become horrible with numbers...it's still comical, thank goodness..
I am not all that superstitious, My favorite day is friday the 13th because it is a good day for me. Except, when I was younger I got mad one day while the full moon was out and beat up my younger sister and a couple ex-friends who were friends with my sister to find out my secrets. And after that Every Full Moon I got sick and it stopped after a Year went by, and I havent gotten sick for five years still today Knock on wood, I also told someone I havent gotten a cold in 2 Years and didnt say knock on wood and I got a cold 2 days b4 the full moon and The day after the full moon I got better.
I'm really not superstitious. I believe in it, but it never bothered me. Like there's a friday the 13th this month...but for me it's just another day. Now if it's the 13th and a full moon...then that might be something. But other than that, I don't really think about it.
And I've seen that movie, hehe. So good.
Well I didn't used to think I was superstitious UNTIL I was in a rickety plane flying over the Great Lakes with 12 other people...there were 13 people on the plane...you bet that was on my mind while I tried to accept that I was going to fall outta the sky and die....
great post. I only do the salt thing. But I dont rate people if they do believe it. Nice topic!
I have never been superstitious. Society for the most part has dictated to us. We heard tales growing up, we were put in a mind frame at a young age of things we should fear.
Right now, as of the time I'm looking at her post, SatinMist has 666 posts. lol
I must say I do not believe in superstitions. I've had several black cats, I've broken mirrors with no ill effects, I had a phone number that ended in 666....No worries.
I won't walk under a ladder however. I don't want someone dropping a wrench, hammer or pail of paint on my head. That's common sense, not superstition!
I think that this kind of stuff is humorus. I am not particularly superstitious, but just the other day when I was looking for some big thick pieces of steak to purchase, I came across one that had the price of $6.66. I showed it to my husband and we both chuckled saying that that steak wouldn't be bought in our town and they might as well just give it to us before they throw it away.
But honestly. . . . . we didn't buy that one. I don't know why either. When I used to work in retail as asst. manager, everytime that I would ring up purchases and they would come out to $6.66 I would laugh and show my boss. She would always freak out. I didn't, however, have to change the price a single time in the 5 years that I have worked in retail. And the customers never grabbed a piece of candy or something like that to change the price either. I believe that people do it, no doubt about it. I just think it's kind of funny.
As far as other #'s . . . . . um, when Friday the 13th comes around every year, I love to pick on customers that make remarks about it. Damn rude customers are so snobbish when they do crap like that.
Uhhh, I'm getting of the subject. My bad, I'm done.
Well, when it comes to totals coming up to $6.66, it makes me laugh. Some of the customers where I used to work(Walgreens) just wouldn't care. But I had one lady add something to her bill. I guess the previous day she had the same amount for her total, and her car wouldn't start. I say it's just a bad coincidence.
I had that total come up for me one time at McDonald's a few years ago and it really didn't bother me then. The number 13? That number is lucky for me. Good things usually happen to me when Friday the 13th comes around.
I know the #11 is the most spiritual number. I always think of 1 as an unlucky number from an old phrase I learned back in elementary school: "First is the worst, second is the best". That's just me though. :)
I really
If people didnt think it was bad luck... then it wouldnt be bad luck. The psychology behind it almost predicts it or forces the unfortunate one to string unrelated things together and thus deem it unlucky.
Well said.
Have a look at the movie 23 with Jim Carey in it. He MAKES the number have meaning. That's what people do. If I all of a sudden decided 5 was bad I'm sure I could string together tons of events that would make it so.
At my job I work at a restaurant and the same thing happens people r always asking for another item to make the $6.66 not there total it is funny. But as for myself i don't really pay much attention to it
This is interesting to read because today in class someone mentioned they would be doing their thesis defense on Friday the 13th. All of us seemed to groan and wish her good luck. I don't think it was so much we were superstitious, rather it was more of a respond in a way that's expected.. I'm not sure.
I always loved Friday the 13th because people would get so caught up over it. I had the most fun just catching people off guard and spooking them.
I take the same view as KC: Being superstitious in my mind serves no other purpose in my mind than being paranoid, and that is one thing I am not.
I hate when you heading out for the day ,and a black crosses in front of you...
I` ve spilled salt then tossed some over my shoulder...
Sacred is right.. And personally, numbers are just numbers.. Not numbers do not harm you.,.
I'm not really a very superstitious person...i have broken a few mirrors and things in my time but havent seemed to have had bad luck because of it.....
I would say that 13 is more of a lucky number than an unlucky one to me as everytime it seems to be involved with something i do i always seem to come out on top...
Hum a hard one...I use to have alot of superstitions, like breaking a mirror or walking under a ladder, but now I am the oposite, I had a black cat, I am a clumzy girl so mirror are like thing I buy at cosco I dont care paying 6.66$ hey if the lunch is good perfect...As for room 13...never fouind one vut would not mind, I have lived in appartement 413 tho...funny we had one apt 13 in a block where I use to live as a kid, and it seems okay, actually now my next door neightboor are 13, I am at 12 lol and they are cool..think they do voodoo tho? Not sure (j/k) No really I see the door every day leaving for work and still was nto attack by it. Afterall the worst superstition is the one that you let controle you and get to you. Imagine if we say that seing fog on a bathroom mirror mean a demaonw ill come in? Will youcover it?
I was reading an article that said most builders just avoid the 13th floor alltogether because is it is considered an unlucky number (superstition) in other countries. It's sort of lapped over and they skip it here because they feel if it is a hotel that they will simply just lose out on money due to the lack of people wanting to do anything with that number.
I try not to be superstitious but grew up with alot of it in my family. I don't freak when I see $6.66 or a laddar or a black cat cross my path but it has allready the idea of it has been put in my head and I do honestly think about it.
my black cat regularly crosses my path... he is a lil pet and i couldnt imagine thinking that him walking near me would result in anything negative.
I am not superstitious at all. no i do not thing 666 or 13 is unlucky. 666 is a good number cuz i consider my self evil at times.
but
i am a cashier and i have had the same thing happen ppl will get a total of 666 and add a 30 cent pack of gum or something to get the total different or take something off and do it separately. i cant believe how some ppl are.
hah, i once got a reciept for 6.66 on friday the 13th at 7-11. I think I still have it... It is not a number that showed up all that regularily with 7% tax... but because of the deposit... it rang up that way. *smile*
i actually had purchased something for a gas station to get some smokes and the total was 6.66 i couldnt help but laugh, i didnt ask for a change, i think bad luck only happens if you think about it too much. like friday the 13 i absolute love that day cause i get to watch other people start counting their steps and careful of what they get. i think its all in the head.. i dunno. bad luck is my good luck
I personally do not follow all the superstitious ideas even though i know of them. To me they mean nothing but hey this thought may bite me in the butt one of these days.
I don't think I'm really too superstitious, although I do believe in karma. Don't know if that is considered a superstition or not. Although I've seen it happen to many time not to think it doesn't happen.
I must say that if we put Karma in the mix that is one thing that keeps my nose clean. I do believe in that one and have seen it bite many in the ass.
Me superstitous, I dont realy think so. Dont give 666 much more then a laugh when I see it online, but I do not do anything else with that number.
Only time I worry about ladders is when someones on it or im the one on it. But those two times do have different reasons then superstition for me to worry about it. Like me or the person on them falling off.
I try not to be TOO superstitious because it would be too complicated.
There is more then 1 friday the 13th every year and nothing happened on 6/6/6 this time around so...
But then again I do wear a charm everyday so, I suppose I am a little Superstitous.
Funny this should be a topic cause in my run ins with superstiton I have more good luck then bad last week a black cat crossed my patch then about 3 blocks later I found ten dollars just laying on the ground. And on friday the 13th I seem to have a great and very productive day at work. I guess I am a bittbackwards.
i've had good luck on days like friday 13th. i'm not really superstitious though.
Superstitions...Hmm,I have had my change equal 6.66 a few times, alot of people are like omg,me personally I think that whatever happens will and nothing can enhance or stop it,But I do have this one thing, when I get in my car at night I always check my backseat.
I don't see the reason for superstition it is all in the mind if you believe things enough you can make it happen bad of good
I am very superstitious. But not about the number 13, that's actually always been my lucky number. I don't worry about broken mirrors, as long as my image isn't trapped in one. I do stress over the $6.66 thing. I've never had that total come up for me but if I did I would probably buy a coke or something to change it.
All being said and done, I would still walk around a ladder rather than under it! and avoid breaking mirrors big time!
We are taught to be superstitious and what a powerful effect it has on some.
I am not superstitious, however, I still feel the power of the idea. I think about it and then have to dismiss it.
Like being on the 6th floor of a hotel in the hall where there is room 665 then 667. You think about that missing number and why it is missing.
I find superstitions to be powerful because of the belief in them. I choose not to be a believer. Nothing bad has ever come from my choice.
LOL, Throth yea now that you mention it I never noticed before that room number 666 is not there in hotels! That is something really good to learn, thanks chickabee! :)
friday the 13th is normally a good day for me (and i am hoping it is this month)...as for 666 i remember when i was 14 being weird cause my best friend at the time, the last 4 digits of her phone number was 8666.....but none of it bugs me......the only superstion type thing i follow is not walking under ladders, and thats because i dont want to risk it falling and one of my kids getting hurt.......or something fo that nature.....most suprestitions are obsurd as it is.....
Well, Friday the 13th don't bother me too much since the insurance company I do some work for told me that statistics prove that Friday 13th is not the unluckiest day of the year. But, still I know if you are on a waiting list for a hospital operation on a Friday 13th, there is a better chance you will be called in for an operation as more people are superstitious about that date!
I am not superstitious, I have hadmany purchases come up to be $6.66...the cashiers always want to change it but I tell them that is my lucky number and they jus look at me, Friday the 13ths r always lucky for me...but what I do beleive in is Karma...cause whereas luck might miss u Karma never does...
Now karma, that is one of my favourite subjects.. I wish there was a thread going on that subject you would never shut me up! lol
it would be the ultimate to have exact change for a purchase of $6.66 -- no more, no less -- as though it were planned.
I honestly think that numbers arent something to be superstious about. In my opinion, if you are superstious about the number 13, then you have to be superstious about 14, 15, 16, etc. Because 13 comes before all of them, it is a part of them. Dont get me wrong, if things go bad for you in a certain month, say you always get a tax audit, then watch out for that month. But, as a whole, I am not superstious. I agree with many of the previous posts, in that it is a mental thing.
thats some freaky mojo jojo. I havent been supersitious, well I have been @ times.
fri the 13th was a bad day cause i used to have really bad days whenever it came up on the calendar now at days I treat it like it was just another day on the calendar
Well, for one summer a certain 32 oz beer and a pack of Marlboro's equaled $6.66. I must have made that purchase a dozen times and nothing bad ever happened.
However, If im going to play in a big poker game. I do follow a set routine. Ex, I wear the same hoodie, listen to a certain cd, go for a run, etc. However, I dont really consider it superstitious. I do it because it feels comfortable to do my routine and helps me settle into my card playing mind frame. I guess you could consider it a form of conditioning.
Besides; wasn't the number of the beast recalculated recently, using more accurate translations e&. e&.? It was last year, if I recall correctly... 676? Does that sound right?
If you believe in superstitions, they will happen. As we all know the mind is very powerful.
I would like to think that you are not controlled by a greater power. I believe in science and coincidence.
I personally believe that for anything to have any power over you, you have to be willing to give it some. The number 666 or Friday the 13th are no more cursed or unlucky than any other day. I was involved in a horrible auto accident on April the 12th, 1991...but I do not stay in my house for fear that death will come and try to finish the job. Anything that happens on those days is just a mere coincedence, and I refuse to give the powers any fuel by believing any other way.
Well I have a freind who always hits the top of the car roof whenever we go over railroad tracks, to stave off bad luck. i find it kind of odd but hey its their choice lol
I agree that a number is just a number...the only reason 666 and 13 have any negative connotaions to them is because humans decided to place the negativity on them. Someone panicking over a bill of $6.66 is no different than someone chuckling at a bill of $4.20 except that 4:20 doesn't have an evil connotation attached to it.
That being said, although I'm not into the whole 666 or 13 superstitions, I still catch my breath if a mirror I'm carrying slips and tighten my grasp on it immediately, for fear of the "7 years of bad luck"...yet, I never worry if someone opens an umbrella inside, or worry that stepping on a crack will put my mom in a body cast. I guess each person believes and disbelieves in superstitions however each feels to the individual. Thats just my two cents...
Well, I guess that I am legally marked since my SS# has 666 in it and I was born on Friday the 13th. 13 has always been my "lucky" number. It was on all my uniforms when I was younger & my class ring, etc. However, I am getting on a plane on Friday the 13 coming up with a bunch of cowards who have mentioned it to me more than once & their apprehension is funny to me. I am superstitious to a degree, though, I suppose in the fact that I "turn my hat around" whenever a black cat crosses my path.
I tend not to really be superstitious as a whole but I do find my self doing things every once in a while that I learded as a kid such as tossing a pintch of salt over my left shoulder is it is spilt. This comes from the Romans. Salt cost quite a bit one was thought to be as most a sin to spill it there for if you spilled it you were to toss a pinch of it over your sholder as a offering to the GOd as to not offend them with such an act. funny how we still do this today
I'm not supersticious at all. my co-worker yelled at me for opening an umbrella indoors. things like that makes me giggle
Well I am a little superstitous. I have to admit I am not scared of the number 13 because my birthday falls on the 13th. But I don't walk under ladders, don't walk over brooms, don't leave a rocking chair rocking when there is noone in it. I like black cats, but don't like it when they cross my path. And I got this from my dad, if someone hands you a knife opened, you must hand it back to them opened. And if a dollar total does come to $6.66 I will add something to it to make it different.
I think superstitions are just old wives tales, they hold no power you don't give them. Things that go bad in your life are mere coincidence and to belive it's bad luck is absurd. I personaly am going to live at 666 13th street.
i think it is the fear facture not really the superstition, ppl believe in wat they fear and let their fear rule their lives
Well, all i can say it that last night i played in a card game after going through my whole routine (see above), and i ended up doing fantastic. Just mind over matter, or self brain washing haha. Look at it however you like.

Beginning to become wary of superstitions, got wrong for putting new pair of shoes on the kitchen table the other day and got pulled away before i walked under a ladder....
I cant understand that superstition about not putting shoes on the table.. anyone know the origins of it?
xxEmaeraldxx I was always told it was bad manners, not that it was bad luck. Kind of like putting your elbows on the table. But thats all I have ever heard on that.
Yes, but I remember once I went out and bought a new pair of shoes and put them on the kitchen table to show them. My Granny went batty at me for doing so, saying that I would have nothng but bad luck now!
Somethings happen for a reason. Although I am not that superstitious I am carefull not to pass under a ladder for example you dnt know what might fall * a bucket of paint * and Friday the 13th isnt always bad luck. It is good luck if you be carefull
well i think its all in the mind of the person who thinks it bad luck yea they say 666 is the sign of the devil bt so many ppl had it before and never had bad luck coz of it i think if u believe in it alot 2 be bad luck it will end up bein bad luck bt if u dont then it will not i dont believe it 2 be bad luck like thas just me though lol
