Stereotyping in Vampirism
From what I have noticed a lot of stereotyping is attached to living vampires.
Many believe real vampires should live and act a certain way. Most of this stereotyping is based on fictitious vampires -like characters from an Anne rice novel. What I am wondering is if you believe some vampires have been conditioned to live a lifestyle simply based on Hollywood propaganda ?
well my sister I can only speak for my self, I am a Vampyric Thug many that I speak with on the phone know this, I do however live by a code, the code I live by is on my profile.
Yes I do feel many in the Vampyric community live some what of there lives after a Hollywood type Vampire but that is the way they wish to live, and in my eyes what ever makes you happy, or what ever works for you to be happy!
there are many who live by the hollywood stereotype. i call them lifestylers.
many more of us are vampires because we simply are. it doesn't change who we are personality wise. it doesn't keep us in our basements during the day and force us into night jobs.
it just is a part of us, and the stereotype to me is ridiculous.
It's an interesting idea. A lot of people have no past knowledge of vampires when they realize that there is something different from them than everyone else. In this case as they realize what they are they may do research on the problem. In this case I fully belive they could end up doing as hollywood says in order to fit in to their new lifestyle.
However, I feel that most people find thier own ways to express it, without hollywoods help.
I would not be shocked, that some modern vampires have taken how there life stile should be from fictional books and movies. But many might still fall into that with out ever reading or watching such things. Some people aee just drawn to a certain life style, no matter how close or not close it is to fiction.
Given that many of the things that such thing give vampires in abilities do not work in the real world. They just cannot live that way anyway.
But given that I still no very little about modern vampire (even with having a friend thats one) I cannot say much more.
I also believe it is everyones own choice as to how they choose to live but for those vampires that do not live the hollywood vampiric lifestyle these stereotypes can get annoying. I found many vampires belittle those who do not fit the mold of the stereotypical vampire.
I agree. Everyone is allowed to believe how they feel. I am just not sure I like it thrown in my face when it comes to the hollywood style of vampires.
well I think hollywood vampires are the only kind that exsist
As a Psy vamp I tend to live as I have always lived no coffin LOL no creepy castle in the middle of no where I live down the street from the police dept. Not that this stops ppl from stealing from our house mind you.
I like being up at night because I like being up at night, I have no super human powers I cant turn into a wisp of smoke or fog nor a bat or black cat.
I am like all other humans out there excpet one thing I have a need for energy I cant get any other way.
I live by a code I never take without asking but this is an ehtical question not a stereotypical Hollywood thing just being me..:)
Around here when you say Vampire everyone looks for the old moddern day dracula. Fangs looks very pale and wears the old cloths and a cape. They also think he would turn into a bat. It's pretty stupid. Yeah that could have been dracula back then but now everyone is evolving so they wouldn't look like that anyway. The old accents are stupid everyone thinks a vampire would have one. That isn't true.
Many do live the Hollywood Stereotype Vampire life. But there are just as many of us that do not. I myself am not Vampire or Lycan though many still think I am. I live a different path that many mistake for being a Vampire. My personal opinion is to each his own. I care not what others think of my life. And those that live the stereotype is because it is what is right for them. People even Vampires will always do what it is thier nature to do. Stereotype or not.
This brings up the same old question: Very few share the same definition or even the same spelling of this word/term...Everyone is different in their beliefs and lifestyles...What ever works for each...Don't let human words define you or control you...Clear your mind and find what is Truely deep within...
At times our conditioning can repress our awareness of who we are.
"To be aware of why we act and react in the manner that we do..."
"I am not saying we need to change who we are but that we need to comprehend who we are."
Quotes from one of my journal entries...
Most behave the way they think others want them to. Hollywood vamps are cool to most so our vamps will try to live the same lifestyle just for the sake of looking cool themselves. I, however, prefer to live the way I want to. It's what makes me happy and I'm perfectly fine with that. :)
I think it is like everything that does not fit the way fo the people that then we get stereotype, the same as punk, or gothic, or even lesbian or guay its not because you choose a way of living that you have to be a way. Like for BDSM it does nto mean you walk outside with a collar and a leash to go do grocery because you like that. Almost everything is stereotype one way or another sadlyé
I don't know, but if I were a vampire then I would live the way that only I would want to live.
I think many do live the life of the Hollywood Vamps....I mean why not?
In Hollywood Vampires, they take without regard for consequences or responibility for actions. "I am Vampire" is the reason for a lot of things that they do. And to a certain extent, the hype, the clothes, the sensuality of the Hollywood vamp is attractive. Those who want to play, are a bit over the edge mentally, and those who like the hype are going to go with the Hollywood type vamp.
Just my thoughts on it.
I was hoping the posts would would focus more on the conitioning aspect then just the stereotyping.
Some compromise themselves to be something they are not because it is what is expected of them and they themselves are not ever aware of it.
You have to live true to yourself. I think you are who you are and you do not have to please anyone but yourself. People judge people everyday for things as meanial as the color of their hair. Should that matter when you live your life. No, I don't think so. I think if you live to please others then you are not really living at all.
I believe that the holly wood vampire stereo type is that a stereo type but it also gives some sort of a stepping stone to those who don't know
Only the arrogant and unknowing cannot see past the vampire illusion hollywood has set up. there are many types just as there are human
Many can be led astray. We all have grown up seeing vampirism on the big screen, it is misleading. For those coming into vampirism alot of the times this is all the know. Yes they are ignorant but a lot of the "standards" of livng vampires contribute to them feeling as though this is the way they must be. Being a vampire is not easy ( I know other vampires already know this) so when it comes to being accepted into the vampire community some my feel a need to be who they are not out of fear of rejection.
Is anyone even reading the replies to this thread?....
I'm not-so-sure that Anne Rice is purely fictional. I think that the possibility of anything is possible. I personally believe she could have interviewed a vampire or vampire consort.
of course, but I don't see why a vampire would even consider trying to be something there not, but then again, I'm not a vampire so I wouldn't really know.
I think it might be more of a conditioning matter. They have been conditioned to be this way not out of choice but ignorance.
I am huge on comprehending everything I do in hopes to understand aspects of my life and bring to light matters I did not realize. I think a lot of this has to do with a persons personal awareness.
Yeah this point was what I was hoping we could focus on I guess I should have made myself more clear. :)
I did try to sway the discussion in a few of my recent post but I do not believe to many people actually read the replies before posting themselves.
in every religion, society, or anyhting in thw world, there is stereotyping, so i find it no different to have stereotypes in out culture. WE need to be bigger than the stereotype.
When I was younger I tried to live the way movies and book see us. But now I don't. As I grew older I also became wiser and realized that Holly Wood is a buch of crap. Now I live the way I want to.
Well there are probably not just vampires living life like Hollywood would have them do it. There are lots of movies and shows out there that address all sorts of lifestyles, ethnic groups, etc., not just vampires.
It has become very apparent that not to many are ready the whole thread....
I don't doubt that some of what Hollywood has dished out has caused a few to seek to be like the movies portray. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of both old and new movies. I think that many of us here are seeking a deeper level of understanding.
Who isn't conditioned in some way or another to live a certain lifestyle? People... creatures with conscious, logical minds always have opinions (or at least I'd imagine so, or else what is the point) and if one has opinions then they have judgments and their 'way of life'. Once someone has judgments, they have expectations for others.
It is sad that many are not taking the time to answer your question about conditioning.
While I am not into vampirism except the lore and my fascination of how it is a metaphor in many areas of life, my take on your question is this:
The stereotypes occur because of the outsiders looking in. There is an allure to the lifestyle and aspect of living outside of the norm, and in doing so being more independent, free and beautiful if you would.
How this is done internally is conditioning. Whether the individual uses traditional means to train themselves to become a vampire (books) or uses outside sources to enhance the energy manipulation (chemicals) to create the state that they view is vampirism becomes a question for individuals.
But one thing that seems consistent is a training that accompanies the awakening. Several things I have seen used are: Energy manipulation, meditation and focus of the intent of will.
So even if someone naturally feels that they are a vampire, they must work at it or they would not be one. They would change into just an energy sensitive person. In short I believe it is a choice that one makes and then trains in.
Natural-The conditioning you are looking to discuss is like talking about Nature vs. Nurture. But in the sense that people feel the need to Nurture that which is outside thier Nature to keep from being alone. This is eveything that is against what being a Vampire is about. Modern Vampires are free people. They drawn to the Lifestyle because it speeks to something inside of them. You can't condition yourself into being soething you are not or it will eat you alive from the inside. That is why many people become Vampires to begin with. Because they were trying to live the Stereotype Life of a "Normal" person. Choosing the Vampire Life opens the freedom to enjoy the things that already make that person happy. Hollywood just puts it out there. It is our choice to take hold of it.
Nature vs. Nurture definately plays it part in all of this. I really enjoyed your comment. It is very thought provoking.
I in no way lead an average everyday day life. Maybe some are drawn to things such as vampires because they have been isolated by the community around them and they feel they can relate.
I don't think anyone who has free will can be condictioned to dress or act any specific way, unless that person is a sheep and is easily lead.I guess free will is the working words in this response.
I feel that the majority of stereotypes put upon Vampires is purly Hollywood/media (books etc) based. I have found that the majority of living Vampires live rather normal lives. The behaviour of them runs the gambit but Vampires are individuals as are regular people.
Couldn't one argue that most living vampires discovered their nature after following their interest in the Hollywood vampire? I would think that someone drawing energy from another wouldn't necessarily think "vampire" as the conclusion unless they were first interested and introduced to the vampire legends and fiction. The level of folkloric vampire interest would have to be at least marginally higher than average for someone to begin in blood sharing or blood drinking one would think.
So as gently as I can tread amongst this subject, one would think that interest in the legendary or Hollywood vampire would nearly always accompany an awakening of a similar nature or else they wouldn't arrive at the conclusion that this is a case of living vampirism. People don't just 'happen' upon the Strigoi, or VR or other info about this particular subject, you have to be looking for it and the folklore or fiction would likely be a compass to that info.
With me, I am more into history than fiction. Vampires in movies are neat and all but they have never truly keened my interests...
I did stumble arcoss VR while looking for information on the symptoms I was having. I wasn't looking into vampire this or that but an idea of what was going on with me...
The only dabbling I have ever had in vampirism was with true historic facts, which my interest in cannibalism led me to.
And I learned about psychic vampirism from reading the Satanic Bible when I was very young.
Hence the hollywood theory doesn't apply to me...
Exceptions to the rule I'd imagine but I know that I'll surely get responses from everyone who'll say they were "never interested in vampire fiction or movies."
True, true.
I really have enjoyed what you have had to say thus far. Though most of it does not apply to me. You have helped lead this thread in an interesting direction.
Many (if not most) are allured by the image and what it suggests.
And gothic style and music is a cool genre so why shouldn't people be drawn to that and thereby to the fiction and movies that often influence the style and lyrics of gothic culture. Exposure on sites like this would also be responsible for bringing many living vampires into a dark or gothic style.
As Lord Aeternus said, whatever makes a person happy and increases their own sense of self.
well, all that "we're gonna die at day time" shit is stupid. we can go out in day time, it just makes us feel all sick and stuff. besides, how humans are by day, vampires are by night
you are going to have stereotyping in anything that involves humans because its human nature to want to catigorise things to help make it easier to understand things. As with all generalizations they never always hold up. Some may be drawn to the lifestyle proposed in hollywood vampires because they think its cool but some vampires may be drawn to hollywood vampires because of thier nature it can work both ways. My lifestyle may fit some of the stereotypes but I was born with it before I was even interested in it from hollywood. I have always been someone that sleeps better in the day and stays up most of the night. my eyes have always been very sensitive to any light not just the sun, and I can get a 2nd degree sunburn in as little as 15min in the summertime. So my intrest in vampires came from similarities I found in myself
i get anoyed with people who play into the stero type, makes people think we are weird which we are not
Make no mistake...it's weird...and it's been argued that it may or may not be parasitic. However, weird in and of itself isn't necessarily a bad thing. So as long as you can own the weirdness and make it yours, then I don't see the complaint.
I like that idea, owning your weirdness :)
I have never been "average" and am totally more comfortable around "weird" people as I am not seen as a novelty in their eyes.
I think I am more concerned for those who haven't got a clue, running aroung claiming to be something their not, getting into trouble, harrassing others and what not...giving the majority of real living vampires a bad reputation not like we don't have a hard enough time with people understanding us...
I think the ones that haven't researched vampyrs properly are the ones that are obviously the ones that take up the silly supersticians, but the ones well educated on this subject have their own way of living
I do not believe in Hollywoods version of vampires.... for me that just does not exist. I do believe in a modern vampire lifestyle, and that not every one has the "need - thirst" for blood but rather energy.
Could this be an evolution of the species?
I'm not a vampire (merely a 'scholar of metaphysics') so I won't get too involved in the internal affairs of who is what or isn't but I'd like to merely point out the sheer volume of different definitions for what one considers to be a living vampire in addition to the more accepted differences of blood vs energy and of course the limited arguments of whether the folklore that led to the fiction is founded in any way on reality. It's apparently all still open to discussion. It would even seem that there's still a great deal of debate left AMONG the living vampires as to what is and isn't real. That being said, no one has proven anything to me yet as far as the true paths or who's faking or who's kidding themselves. Fortunately it doesn't truly affect me, so I'll respect all opinions and claims as best I can until such a time as I feel the need to have things proven to me.
Know who you are and what you are and be happy with that. Don't worry about what others think of you. Don't worry about who's ruining the reputation of vampires as a whole because to be honest, popular opinion isn't with the overall idea yet much less any group within that idea. It's still just considered very weird among the general public. But, as I said earlier...who cares...own your weirdness and be yourself.
i am a individualist in my real life so i dont really give a shit what other people think about what i am so if they dont like me for being a vampire they can all go choke on a big fuzzy one lol
I think very much that people are stereotypic of what a vampire "should be" or what anybody "should be". Theres too much of that in the world as there is...hence why people like us are here to enjoy individualism. I do what I want how I want when I want, and theres nobody thats going to tell me otherwise...except the government. But yes, back on subject, vampires are made out to be evil, bats, vamp teeth, pale skin, etc etc etc etc...but I dont think any of that actually MAKES you a vampire.
I think yes and the reason why is cause that's the lifestyle I would put them in. but because of this I have been given an interest in the world of vampires!
Hmm... stereotyping definitely exists for vampires, and from what I've seen it comes in three main forms:
1) The legend of vampires. I like to call this the Dracula stereotype. This is probably what most people think of when they think "vampire."
2) Hollywood vampires. You know, those hot goth twentysomethings who kick serious butt. Yeah, them.
3) "New age" vampires. Those who practice Wicca and maybe aren't real vampires but just want to seem cool. Mainly pictured as teenagers.
I can't be sure, but that's what I think of as common vampire stereotypes.
I think the only stereotypes that exist are 1 & 2, because alot of people don't really know about 3
stereotyping is everywere in life it is something that will be there as long as people refuse the see each other as equals.
I think alot has to do with how Hollywood and the movies .
I believe alot of people try to be somethig they are not like the though of vampires from movies and try to play the role I also believe there are alot of young vampires out there and when trying to figure thenmselves out this that acting like they do in the movies is the right way for them to act.... though as they grow up and meet others of their kind they learn other wise...
darkkaos - you make an excellent point that 'acting out' and following stereotypes is a big part of growing up and learning about who we are as individuals (later realizing how silly it can be).
I believe it is up to the vampire if they are goint to let hollywood run the way they live.
I believe that stereotyping happens no matter what type of lifestyle you choose to live.. Someone out there is gonna believe you do this or live this way just from they portray that lifesyle to be.. As far as Vamps living a hollywood lifestyle potrayed in the movies.. I wouldnt know .. the ones I have met seem to keep to themselves and just let the ones closest to them know how they live..
seems the "count" and i have a lot in common. i burn withn in 10 min or so of being in the sun. I have always worn sunglasses because my eyes r sensitive.
as a child i used to drink the blood from the roast pkg which was to be for dinner. raw hamburger didnt stand a chance around me..
Well it’s hard to pin down what a vampire is as it does change with time and paradigm
Shifts on the bloodsucker. Why in 1931 with dear dead bela lugosi( yes bela lugosis dead ) changed the image into an aristocrat with charming Hungarian accent heard even on sesame street … my girls love it when I do that accent and count there toes and try to bit them … one HA ha ha Two Ha ha haaaaarr. I see nothing wrong in being Hollywood type life based on Dracula … very erotic. I say be what you are or be what you dream … personal I drain energy drink blood and my dark soul would give valad the impaler Goosebumps … but im not a vamp and wear a suit all day long and sit on the train next to you …..
There are some vampires out there that are called *lifestylers*, where they dress and act just like the fictional vampires in the books and there are some that are like me and a few friends of mine that look and act like a normal person and no one would no the wiser if we were vampires or not unless they saw us drink blood or take energy from another living being....
This is a very complicated subject when I started to think about it.
As others have said, people don't stumble across the 'deeper' textbooks, you have to go look them out.
Perhaps the Hollywood fiction has made them curious and that has made them a scholar.
Some people may then find that their interest was 'always there' and they seek out a word to describe what they feel - for whatever reason they find 'vampire' seems to fit.
The word vampire has many definitions and 'symptoms', these good people pick out the bits that fit their 'condition' (wrong word but can't think of a better one) and ignore or rubbish the bits that they have left behind.
Some parts of the definition don't fit their outlook but can be achieved (wearing cloaks and false fangs) as they attempt to make themselves fit more closely to the definition. In this way they are forcing themselves into the definition that they are using
As many have pointed out no-one can now agree a precise definition of the word vampire - it is lost to the point where it is instantly dismissed as nonsense - even in this thread someone states 'Hollywood vampires are the only kind that exist' .... well, that's wrong - here is one

Unfortunately people are so ignorant to everything that they create stereotypes to help them think that they better understand stuff whether vampires people or objects...its ignorance
I think that people are afraid of vampires that is why they sterotype
i think if iot dosnet go into the definiton on normal its weird
People invented stereo types to be able to place others in boxes. It's a comfortable way to look at the world for many people if everything falls nicely into catagories.
I think that some have taken to the hollywood steriotype of a vampire but that is why it is called a steriotype because of the way they show it is the way people percieve vampires to be which is not always true
The same point keeps reappearing. That the stereotype exsists to make others comfortable with what they do not understand. Sometimes others are grouped into the same stereotype just because they share the same interests. But it is up to us to rise above the stereotypes. Whether Vampire or Lycan or Witch. A word is not what defines us but we define the word as people precieve it. That is why it changes over time.
stereotyping is a way of catagorising people. good or bad people do it and accept them , even when they know better. i guess its easier than actually thinking. when you are a part of a small sub-culture its hard to find info or/and anyone like you. ( i learned this as a single, white, mom in the gay/pagan communnity here. capital hill )
Yes, I do think some people do dress and behave in a certain way to perpetrate the "typical" Hollywood Vampire, but the question is do they really believe they are true vampires or do they realize they are just "posers"?
while many do Kendra and me both knew that this was not true vampires. Her being a vampire and me being VERY like one we knew that true vampires for one do not require a stake to the heart or garlic to kill them, I love garlic! As for silver it only agitates my skin and does nothing to her, crosses only piss us off. Another thing sunlight bothers neither one of us, we just prefer moonlight.
i will say this much. this is a subject i could talk about all night long. the cast majority of us live by the rules that go with being a vampyre. the rules are plain and simple and not hard to live by. the problem is the minority that decide to try and stray from the path and become the stereotypical hollywood vampyre. these are fictitious and unrealistic. we are nothing like what is seen in movies and i think personally that those who choose to live that way should be sent to 8th level of hell. the movies have portraid us as weak and feeble creatures whose only mindset is blood and death. that is not us at all. we are intelligent strong minded and capable beings who have lived among humans for 65000000 years. for only 6 millinia have humans actaully known we were around. they suspected before then but did not actually know untill about 4000 B.C. even now it is almost impossible for a mortal to tell if one is a vampyre just by looking at him. unlike the movies we do not have extenguishing characteristics. unlike the movies we do not only feast on mortal blood. unlike the movies we are able to sustain in the sunlight although most prefer the shadows. although "interview with a vampire" was the most accurate vampyre movie, there were still some things inaccurate. unlike like the movies we do not turn to dust when we die we just simply die. unlke the movies, we are able to retract our fangs when unneeded. i could go on forever about this subject but i am running out of time. if anyone has any questions about any of this feel free to ask me.
My own personal opinion (please dont become offended please remember this is only my opinion) yes I think alot of todays vampires do take parts of the movie lifestyle of vampires as the way vampires actually live.I think we as a society take bits and pieces of what we see and hear and mold it into our own unique lifestyle. We make our life the way we want it and what makes us feel comfortable and feel like we belong.
In response to this thread, I have seen many a Vamp change themselves to fit into the stereotypical "Hollywood Vampire" as a means to increase their donors, it's a sad thing to see.
I personally wouldn't do that I don't like to draw unwanted attention to myself like that. It's hard enough as is to live without being bothered by "vamp groupies". The stereotypes I feel harm the modern vampire reputation.
Simplicity I agree with you that some real vampires are stereotyped with the Hollywood vamps. There are so many different novels - of fiction and fact - that describe how a real vampire should act that there truly cannot be ONE way to behave. If every human individual is different, why can't every vampire be different too?
stereotyping a vampire has to do with alot of holllywood mumbo jumbo it kinda buugs me when ppl ask mw questions about if i will burn up in the sunlight or if a stake to my heart will kill me or if garlic repells me well umm if that were true thewn i would be a gonner bcause i love garlic i do hate the sunlight but i like the darkness better personal prefference and if anyone gets staked in the heart ummm yeah death hello lol but this is my opinion it may not be what you are looking for if so sorry
stereotyping holly wood who cares about
trival marks i feel .. that a vampire can be anyone.. what and how do i feel doesnt make much diffrence. what i exp.
is that if you drink blood or steal life forse
or share energy with another.. its romance is gone when the act is done
Well, first of all, I wouldn't call them vampires, because they aren't. lol They're not immortal, the vast majority of them can walk around in the day, and they don't spontaneously grow fangs, when they have to "feed." Yes, many people who take on perceived vamperic tendancies follow a lot of what Hollywood protrays...nocturnal, intentionally pale skin, dark and depressing personalities...this is not necessarily what is spoken of vampires in lore, but it is predominantly what most people that claim to be vampires, as well as have vamperic tendancies, conform to their fantastic nature, and such a life style, as portrayed in movies.
Ok, my views on this are as follows. Stereo type vampires to me are Black cape, saying Blah after every sentence. Transformation into a bat (although that's been a myth for centuries) Anne Rice and Bram Stoker caused many false conceptions about "vampires" Anyone claiming to be a vampire who walk during the day is simply dillusional. Especially if they are grown adults claiming to be purebloods and expecting people to truly believe them. They are nothing but role players, kind of like the people that do the civil war re-enactments, you don't hear THEM saying"we are REAL civil war veterans" You'd laugh at them, wouldn't you. Vampires have ALWAYS throughout time and their history, been creatures of the night. Only within the last decade have there been "day-walkers" That was the whole thing with vampires, they only come out at night. You were safe during the day, when the sun is outm because sunlight is the one sure fire way to kill a bampire. Now-a-days, EVERYONE is a vampire cause they SAY SO.
Yea I think there is alot of stereotyping in Vampirism . The whole coffin undead things are just legends . The only real Vampires are psi . People bite and drink blood b/c its taboo and forbidden . Naturally humankind is attacted to things that are wrong . The Hollywood Vampire and the legends all show our need to rlease ourselves .
Unfortunately, we live in a society that does generalize and throw people into "categories". These stereotypes can be hurtful, just as any labeling can be.
HOWEVER, and I emphasize this strongly, "PERCEPTION IS REALITY." No matter what an individual believes, those beliefs are their reality. Farbeit for anyone to judge that. We all have our perspectives, our perceptions.
Life is a complicated concept, and people do what they can, including stereotyping, to make that life a bit less complicated.
All in all, we just need to be more understanding and accepting of others' ideas, however "different" we may perceive them.
There are those who would follow the stereotype because they believe it to be the norm for their lifestyle.... Then there are those who do as they wish no matter what. It's all in how you look at it. :)
Like people have said, wether it be vampirism, or anything else, were all put into catergories & stereotyped, no one can evade it
You proved my point XxImhotepxX , So now what we are supposed to believe is that throughout recorded time they were making up things about vampires? The same way Hollywood does? And you say there is no such undead/unhuman creature in existence. That there are only "Psi-vamps" I believe everyone possesses the ability to "feed off one's psyche and energy. Some more than others really. For example, you know when someone you're with is in a bad mood, right? That's because you feel their "vibe" Just like when you go to a concert, and your excited to be going and once you get there, you hear the roar of the crowd and your excitement goes through the roof. Your were being force feed the excitement in the air. That's when you can "Feel the electricity in the air" That's everyone energies.
That would just mean that EVERYONE is a vampire and centuries of text in and out of scholarly jounals, and stories were made up. So if THAT'S the case. They vampires NEVER existed.
I mean, va,mpires drink the blood of their victims to sustain and strengthen them. Well, there are tribes in Africa and South America that practice that. Eating and drinking your victims blood to "steal" their enemies courage, and life. Are THEY cannibals or vampires?
I would think that Vampires may get ideas from every day stereotyping. There is always going to be stereotyping, so why not just fit in? I am sure that some ignore stereotyping, as some have written in this thread. Personally, I would think it was a matter of choice. Some Vamps could care less what others think. I think this is the best way to approach the whole stereotyping thing.
i think that stereotyping is every where so why not in vampirism.. if you see it in a movie thats how we should act as people say.. if we dont than were "fake."
Everybody is allowed to be who they want some people will think that another person is doing something wrong if they are doing it diffrent than they are, that is why you should stay around people like yourself then you can be what you want without all the crap that goes along with it...
its not just attached to vampires about all alternative life styles have this problem and I for one think it is dumb let people be who they want I say
I am not sure I even want to touch this subject. The answer seems so blatantly obvious.
Stereotyping in vampirism happens like any and all other subcultures. Is it good, bad, neither? Who cares.
We live in a world that enjoys compartmentalizing everything and everyone. Every book on the matter from the hottest off the printing press to the ancient egyptian texts describing vampires have very similiar attributes. Yes this generation has built upon the folklore and mixed it with popular hollywood to create a stock vampire charecter - dark, mysterious, sexy, powerful, and in a constant battle with an advasery.
Of course these films create a stereo type for modern day vampires, and I'm sure individuals on here attempt to fit into that pre-manufacture mold.
to me it's as though they're saying that they're "wannabe's" and using the stereotype as a sheild to hide behind...
Steriotyping is the same for everything thats being stereotyped..
There's no helping it cause most people do it automaticly.
sterotyping is a fast way of sorting proplr into neat little bixes.. too bad most dont fit nor stay in them
Living people do it...much to my annoyance. Are we really surprised that the undead do it? So much for bettering ourselves over the ages.
