Technically theres 9 levels of hell and here is no religious backing for it. The idea was brought about with Dante and a few othrs simply to make hell more "real".
The protestant church does not recognize it and the catholic church barely does.

However there is reason to believe that a lot of what one might experiance in hell is based upon their own ideas, guilt etc.

The one level emblazoned in my mind from history class was the eighth, where people are up to their mouths in human waste. Better stay on your toes or.....blech!

Well that was Dante's reasoning for his book. He believed that he was visited by Virgil in a dream and taken on the journey to Heaven, Hell and Purgatory...couldn't that have been divine inspiration?

I think that in reality, both his forsaken love, his banishment from his beloved city for politics and his deep religious conviction led him to write a masterpiece in political literature that skewers the people in power at the time.

FelixFelix: Your right it is filled with his political and religious rivals. As for divine is it possible yes but at the same time no. Again there is little in the Bible about hell as far as how it is set up other than being a place subject to your own ideas. There are several Protestants that have claimed to have been visited and were taken to both heaven and hell, they give a different view.

In my opinion it was simply a masterpiece of writing and one hell of a political comentary lol.

I agree and in fact point out that some Christians don't even believe in Hell as a place but look to poor translation of Sheol (a place of hiding or waiting) and Gehenna a place of destruction (based on an actual Gehenna that was where trash was burned up not burned forever) not eternal suffering as a proof for death being the end for 'sinners' - a final destruction not an eternal torment.

Precisly. An idea in progressive Christianity is that those in Sheol after Christs reserection were then let out and judged according to their works.

I think that hell is similar to heaven in that there is a passage where Christ says "heaven is inside of us" which is why I think both heaven and hell outside of a very basic discription is based upon what we perceive it to be. This is also similar to a number of eastern philosophies.

I'd tend to agree that an afterlife would possibly be heavily influenced by your own thoughts on the after life...a bit like "What Dreams May Come", though my own faith may be somewhat lacking in support of that too. Others have claimed that hell would be the very planet we're on if we continue to ravage it with war and pollution.

Yes I have to agree Felix, and I'm glad someone mentioned the political bits. It is a long standing tradition that religious tend to be very political.

Those outside of the "box" if you would are the ones that are able to take the current doings and create something such as what Dante did. Which when taken in this context is far more interesting than just an idea of hell with levels.

Yes...Dante did put a lot of the current events of his time in his work. He was both religious and political but I think mostly he was able to see with the split of his religious group...the schisms...he saw more clearly the hypocrisy of it all. This was all greatly enhanced by his own banishment.

Although a recent fiction work, the book Dante Club gives some pretty decent insight through the authors research into Dante and the American translators opinion at the time of what had influenced his work. (as well as being a pretty cool murder mystery where the crimes are committed in the style of Inferno's punishments)

Seven levels of hell, why would anyone bother to make one seem worse than the other, when almost 40% of the world`s population doesn`t even believe in Hell. Is this a level rating for different people? Does it change as per religion, like, if you`re Buddhist, is the worst level of Hell being immortal?

I honestly place the answer to that on it being far easier to imagine varying levels of bad things and their punishments whereas it's so difficult to imagine enough variations on joy without ending up back in sins again ;)

If there is a hell, first and foremost, I would assume the 7 levels would be based strictly on your punishment and/or loyalty to satan in some instances.

I have to agree with your way of thinking, having played D&D so much myself, i was rather astonished to find out that hell has 7 layers...however, i have to say that the whizzes who wrote D&D took a lot of influence from Dante and Milton when they were constructing the hells LOL.

Sorry but this made me smile..we are atlaking about a place that dont exist, and speculating as how many level there is to punish or place in punishement criminals, killers, sinners, and all sorts of souls coming fomr poeple who did wrong in their life or all their life.
I beleive if there was a hell, lets say there is, I think no matter hwat level you get in you dont improve your condition with time, as it is afterall made for eternal tourment, so tourment cant be alot of things and various to each soul.
So no matter hwat level you end up in, it wont be a trip to Disney land, but more a pain in the oyu know where time for eternety.

The Inferno was written as a form of political protest. Dante was thrown out of Florence and wrote the book. Some say it is about the Medici regime and the Catholic Church

I has seen the Dante test thingie on line and if memery serves there is videogame as well.
As for believing in the real thing, yes I do.The level theory is interesting though, just who would put one in a certain level and what would be the crime to be a certain level. To take a life would have to be the lowest level there is.and after that, I will have to wait and see I guess*grins*

I really don't believe in any concept of heaven or hell for that matter. I found that our souls are pure energy and that energy needs to place itself into another living being...Reincarnation. It's the only concept that seems to have any sense to me.

Everyone has their own ideals about hell. I on the other hand have to think that we make our own hell by our very own actions in our every day lives. Ive read little about hell in the bible so i assume that its either a non existing place or its so bad of a place that noone wanted to elaborate on it.....Who knows for sure really? Everyone has their own opinions & thoughts about it. I dont suppose well ever know until we each pass away onto deaths doorstep.

Here is some information if you would like it:

The Physical Structure of Inferno
Dante's Hell is shaped like a funnel that extends all the way to the center of the earth. It is situated underneath the city of Jerusalem, which is at the center of the northern hemisphere. Opposite Jerusalem, at the center of the southern hemisphere is the mountain of Purgatory. Lucifer is immobilized at the bottom of Hell, where he fell after the defeat in his rebellion against God.
This funnel is made of nine circles. The first circle is the widest and, progressively, the ninth circle is the smallest. This ninth circle surrounds Lucifer. Each circle is reserved to a different category of sinners:

Ante-Hell: This is a place where the souls of the damned fall at their death. From here they are brought by Charon into Hell through the river Acheron. Some souls, the Neutrals, remain here, because they never chose either good or evil.

Upper Hell: the Incontinent
1st circle: Limbo. Reserved for the souls of the just people who never knew Christ, and those (especially infants) who died without baptism and never committed a sin. Here Dante encounters the ancient philosophers and poets.
2nd circle: The Lustful. Dante talks to Francesca da Rimini, who tells him how she became involved in an adulterous affair with Paolo, her brother in law. Landscape: a violent storm which tosses around the souls. Minos guards this circle.

3rd circle: The Gluttonous. Dante talks to Ciacco, a Florentine, who used to be a parasite, as he was going from people to people, gossiping on everyone. Ciacco gives Dante the first prophecy of his future exile. Landscape: heavy steady rain. Three-headed Cerberus is the guardian.

4th circle: The Avaricious and Prodigals. No relevant character is found here. These souls, mostly clerics, go opposite direction, bumping into each other as they push big rocks. The guardian is Pluto, who makes no sense when he talks.

5th circle: The Wrathful and Sullen. These souls are submerged into the river Styx, which surrounds the city of Dis. The wrathful emerge from the dirty waters while the sullen are completely submerged. Phlegyas will take Dante and Virgil across this river in his boat. Here Dante talks to Filippo Argenti, an old acquaintance for whom he has no pity.

Lower Hell: Violence and Fraud
The city of Dis: High walls with closed doors guarded by devils, helped by the Furies and the Medusa. They try to stop Dante, but a divine messenger forces them to open the door.
6th circle: The Heretics. Dante enters the city and sees a huge cemetery filled with open tombs with fire coming out of them. One of the tombs contains the souls of the Epicureans. Dante talks to Farinata degli Uberti and Cavalcante de' Cavalcanti, father of Guido, the poet, and Dante's friend.

7th circle: The Violent. Introduced by the Minotaur, this circle is divided into three rings:

1) Violent Against their Neighbors (tyrants and murderers). These souls are plunged into a river of boiling blood: the river Phlegethon. They are watched over by the Centaurs.

2) Violent against Themselves (suicides). It is an unnatural forest with leafless trees. These trees are the souls of the suicides. Dante talks to Pier delle Vigne, personal secretary of Frederick II. The trees have no leaves because the Harpies keep plucking them as they sprout. Among the trees Dante sees the souls of the squanderers, chased by bitches.

3) Violent against God and Nature. Blasphemers, Sodomites, etc. Virgil talks to Capaneus, king of ancient Crete, stricken by Zeus's bolt for his rebellion. Then Dante talks to his teacher Brunetto Latini, and later he sees three Florentines, at the edge of the circle.

The river Phlegethon cascades into the eight circle, and there is no path to go down. Dante and Virgil are carried down by a three-nature monster, Geryon.

8th circle: Fraud. It is called Malebolge because it is divided into ten bolge (ditches).

1) Panders and Seducers. These souls are scourged by horned demons. Dante talks to Venedico Caccianemico.

2) Flatterers. These souls are immersed in excrements. Dante talks to Alessio Interminei and the ancient Thais.

3) Simonists. They are set heads down into holes in the rock with flames burning on their feet. Dante talks to Pope Nicholas III, who mistakes him for Boniface VII.

4) Diviners, Astrologers and Magicians. Their heads are turned backwards, so they have to walk backwards. Virgil talks to some ancient people: Amphiaraus, Tiresias, Manto and Eurypylus. Among the modern: Michael Scot,.

5) Barrators. They are plunged into boiling pitch and guarded by ten sneaky demons (Malebranche) led by Malacoda (evil tail). Ciampolo of Navarra (a sinner) succeeds in cheating the demons in a hellish context.

6) Hypocrites. These souls, mostly monks of the Jovial order, walk slowly, clothed in heavy caps of lead. Dante talks to two of them from Bologna.

7) Thieves. These souls keep changing into snakes. Dante recognizes (among others) Vanni Fucci, who predicts the defeat of Dante's party, the Whites, and his exile from the city.

8) Fraudulent Counselors. These souls slide away in the ditch as flames. First Virgil talks to Ulysses, the Homeric hero, then Dante talks to Guido da Montefeltro, a turned saint sneaky character.

9) Sowers of Discord and Schism. These souls are physically torn apart. Dante talks to a few, among them Bertram de Bornio, who holds his severed head like a lamp as he walks along.

10) Falsifiers of metals, persons, coins and words. It is like a huge hospital with people with all kinds of deformities. As in the previous ditch, this too is crowded. Master Adam is the most colorful of them.

9th circle: Treachery. It is divided into four sections. The sinners are in a frozen lake, Cocytus. This circle is surrounded by the Giants. One of them, Antaeus, takes Dante and Virgil and puts them down into the ice.

1) Caina: Traitors to Kin. These are immersed in the ice with head down. Dante talks to Carmiscione de' Pazzi.

2) Antenora: Traitors to Homeland. Dante sees one who keeps biting on another's head. He is Count Ugolino who is gnawing the Archbishop Ruggeri's head. He tells Dante the account of his death.

3) Ptolomea: Traitors to Guests. They are head up in the ice, which is freezing their eyes. Dante talks to Fra Alberigo, who is there while his body is still alive, for having killed his guests as he invited them for dinner.

4) Giudecca: Traitors to Benefactors. These sinners are completely immersed into the ice.

The ice of the 9th circled is kept frozen by Lucifer's six flapping wings. Lucifer has three faces, with three mouths, each chewing on a sinner: Judas is in the middle mouth with his head inside, Brutus and Cassius are in the side mouths, with their heads hanging out.

There's nine levels according to Dante's Inferno, which was a dream expressed in a poem, not a revelation. lol Hell is merely a symbol to express a place for all of man's negativities. ERach religion has their own version of it. It seems like organized religion icons it to make followers out of fear of judgment.

Well being a pagan I don't believe in hell, that on many occasions hell is this earth plane, all the fire and brimstone you could ever want is right here, just walking out your front door is a trip into purgatory. That living is hell, death the sweet reward.

A really good thing to look into is Dante's Inferno. It's a symphany but you should look into the meaning behind it...... There is a story that explains the circles of hell... the 7th being the worst and the spot in which you did something so bad the devil himself is your tourturer (spelling?)! I used to be in band and I have played the pieces... they are wonderful! for sure look into them...

I tend to lean towards different levels or areas. I view hell more as a place or learning from past mistakes than of pure pain and punishment. Not to say that hell isnt painful, lonely and many other horrible experiences. But, we all have have the ability to sin and we all have the ability to do noble things. Events and circumstances sometimes push some of us to do things we normally would not do. So, to me hell is where we learn from our mistakes as mortals and either ascend to the next exiistence or come back again with no knowledge to try again depending on the level of our screw ups.

I don't believe in a heaven or hell, but it is pretty fun to think about. I know there's a test online that one could take to get a general idea of what level they would show up in. I took the test (got purgatory/ level one) but don't know where it was. If anyone knows, it would be good to put on here. A lot easier than reading Dante's works...

Really I believe this to be just ramblings, it isn't even synonmous with figures that symbolise the devil in any shape, form or fashion for example, 666, 999 or whatever. As I said earlier in the thread it could possibly be someones interpretation from the book of Revelations.

No one is perfect. If you went to Hell over something like lust or lying...it'd be overflowing. lol If it were another actual place, that is. However, I don't know... Blah... I don't believe in Hell. I think Heaven and Hell are too simple. You're good you get a treat--Heaven. You're bad you get punished--Hell. That's like me telling my 3 yr old "If you're good you get a cookie, but if you're bad you have to go to time out." That's a main reason I left my church. I just couldn't buy into it...

I don't believe in hell. It seems to me that these levels--Dante, D&D, or other, are more of a repair to previous attempts at explaining punishment. It was as if someone went, "But what about?" After seven explainations, the questions were quelled, and hell was born.

First, let me give Xzavier and FelixFelix recognition for everything they already said on the topic and for those who pointed out that this was a work of POETRY.

Also, the work is called "The Divine Comedy," which is divided into 3 sections: Inferno, Purgatory, Paradise. So many people cite "The Inferno" as a stand-alone work; but that's like pulling a chapter from a book. Its significance relies on the rest of the work which is a journey of progression and self-enlightenment.

Why did Dante write it? Probably for numerous reasons...as commentary, politically and historically...to entertain...and to evangelize.

It isn't a rumor. It isn't factual. And it isn't dogma in any faith. It's a great work of literature that you really ought to pick up. And if you'll allow me to be alarmed by a few of the posts here...Online quizzes may be fun for some of you, but wow...just REALLY not reality, ok?

I won't come here and say there is no Hell just because I don't believe in Hell. That's trying to force my opinions/beliefs on others who might not agree with me.

Obviously, we've already gotten out of the way where the levels of Hell originated so no one needs me to bring that up again. BORING!

BUT, I will say that there are plenty of people out there who DO believe in Hell and perhaps it does exist. Just because I don't believe in something doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

I agree with the majority, the NINE layers of hell are from Dante's Divine Comedy. As a writer, I've researched some very off the wall topics, and Hell was included among them. Everything I have found on the subject that mentions layers, or levels, has been works of fiction. I've never read a non-fiction work that mentioned hell as more than one single place (one layer).
