have you ever been woken up by someone calling your name - only to find there is nobody around to have done it?

it happens to me quite often - and it happened again this morning. it was not a shout or yell, nor was it a whisper. i was sort of half asleep, half awake - on the brink, when i heard a very clear and distinct male voice call my name in a friendly, almost playful way. loud enough to awake me with a start - but apart from my cat sleeping on my shoulder, there was nobody in my room. the voice definitely sounded close to my ear.

it was a little unusual this time, because the voice used my nickname rather than my birth name, which is the usual case.

is this common? do a lot of people experience this? is there a rational (mundane) explanation? or are they friendly guardian spirits? any ideas?

Yes this has happened to me alot. I have been woken up by something/someone calling me by both my real name and by my stage names.
I have yet to figure out what the deal is.

I have had this happen... I thought it was in my dream actually... But as I woke up, I woke up completely (Like a start) And I was aware I felt a presence.... I swore I heard a movement on the carpet of my bedroom, It made me freeze.

It was definately a womans voice though

i have had this happen once. only i was fully awake. was a little odd.

I have had it happen several times..not a whisper or shout but loud enough for me to hear and the person with me should have heard it also..

It happens to me all the time, although I've found that generally it's my mother's voice, and she's usually thinking about me when I hear it..

for me it's not being woken by someone calling my name...but knocking on my door...and I go to see who it is and there is no one and everyone in the house ends up being on the other side of the house

this reminds me of the lore about hearing the owl call your name, or the subconcsious trying to get you to wake to what you should be doing.

well if that's the case i wish my subconscious would learn to tell the time - i set my alarm to 7.30 for a reason

I have had this happen but not all the time so not a common experience with me. One time this happened a family member had passed. I believe they came, spoke my name as I was in dream state as to say goodbye to me. I woke up hearing my name being called.

it happen to me, a couple of times, but I was awake and then I heard it like in the next room and I was alone, my mom was not there but it sounded like her voice, when I check cause I know she has left, no one was there.
It hapen like 3 or 4 times.

I can't say i've ever experienced this to my memory. Thats not to say I never have though, just that my memory is so bad I probably wouldn't remember!

You know... I'm not sure if I've woken up to someone saying my name, but I've woken up several times sure that someone has spoken to me. Or that I've heard some kind of alarm. That's the weirdest. Like I'll think the phone rang or that someone knocked on the door. I'll wake up with my heart racing and feeling really disoriented. Probably just a dream...but I still wake up with this feeling that something wanted me to wake up.

A have been awoken by someone calling my name. But I thought it was my mother because of how she normally hollers at me from the bottom of the stairs. But When I asked her if she had called me she said no. And sometimes I get woken in the middle of the night thinking she has entered my room for some reason but again when asked she says no.

He heard a voice call: Simeon! Simeon! He sought the advice of the priests who told him that next time he heard his name called he should answer "I am here Lord"

I had experienced that too, a few times, 2 years ago. The voice wasn't clearly masculine or feminine, had no expression at all, and called me as my close relatives do (i HATE that nickname actually).

Yeah this has happen to me alot i'm still trying to figer out what it or who it is.

Usually it would be a Kindred spirit right...not necessarily having to be reincarnated....just to guard you...like a guardian angel...telling you to get up or just trying to contact you...

I also have this happen to me. Sometimes I am awake and sometimes I wake to the voice. I have been waiting to see if it will tell me what it wants but it only just calls my name...

I have had that very thing happen, it's freaky.

Do you ever know you have to get up but forget to set your alarm but wake up anways, on time? Like and internal alarm clock. I do that.... It's weird. I've also done it when Hubs had to get up and he had turned off his alarm.

If as you say this happens to you on a regular basis, I would say someone is trying to get your attention.

Depending on your beliefs, yours is the choice to investigate or ignore.

Try this experiment... it works... before you go to sleep bang your head on your pillow the number of times relevant to your waking time... for example seven times to wake up at seven... it's freaky and it works...

It happened to me once in my grandparents house , but there was a spirit in there . Its really weird to hear your name to wake up and no one is there

It has happened to me before and I just thought it could have been something in my dream that seemed to present itself in reality. I would investigate it further.

Yep, sure have, all the time. And I swear it sounds like my dad but my dad is usually asleep or gone off somewhere.

I have never woken to someone calling my name, but I have experienced an explainable feeling which wakes me, every time. And I always know that something wanted me to wake up, but I never know why.

I have had that happpen to me opnce..it was soo scary i thought maybe i was dreaming but the voice was so vivid and loud it couldnt have been a dream...it also couldnt have been anyone who was in the house they were all fast asleep..it was the weirdest thing

This happens to me while i'm wide awake....I usually hear my mom's voice and i hear her calling me by my nickname....And this happens only when i'm far away from her...

My problem with something like this is I never remember things like that. If something wakes me up normally I jerk up, look around and roll back over and fall back asleep hardly remembering waking up in the first place. So I can't say yay or nay to this one.

Somebody will call my name and run out of the room just to see my reaction.. so yea, lol.

That has happend to me a few times but i mainly hear my name being called when im already awake and their is no one around...

It could just be you.
Your mind playing tricks, a wake for your mind to wake you up.
It could also be a ghost, some could say a guardian.
I usually wake up to voices but LoL its usually my own.
if i hear my voice being called, its usually while im awake. The sounds around me playing tricks.
Maybe you should investigate a little more

Thats never happened to me .But if it did it would scare the hell out of me .

my father is alive and i've never believed it to be anything supernatural
it's never been creepy...

my father and i have a close relationship so i've always assumed it's my intuition

I have been awaken by someone callin my name

This has happened to me one more than a few occasions. Along with waking myself up out of a full sleep because someones hand was moving towards me to cover my face. When I awoke i found everyone else in the house asleep.

I have woken up to children calling my name, and I thinking they were my own only to find them asleep cosy in their beds. I have also woken up to male voices, women voices, whispers, ect....

I have had it happen once, When I have been in the Awake but not State, but I have it happen more when I am awake and I am sitting in the Place of Rest ( a Garden in my town).


It is indeed strange.

I did and it was my grandma I laid with her for a bit and fell back asleep.
I went down latter for breakfast and said where’s gran, my mum started to cry and dad told me she passed away last night ….. I didn’t say anything.

My mum has the same problem only worse she doesn’t know the people she sees in her sleep just screams alot

I've had this happen many tiimes. It happens most often just as I'm drifting off to sleep. I'm not sure what the reason behind it is.

I have woken to someone calling my name. When I worked in a home for disabled kids I had to do a couple of double shifts so slept there in one of the rooms upstairs, for two nights someone kept calling me and waking me up I would check the other rooms and no one was ever upstairs so I would go down and ask the other nurses and non of them had called me either I later found out that the upstairs was solitary confinement when the place used to be a prison work house of sorts and a few of the inmates had died in those upstair rooms.

I've actually had it happen when i was gettin ready for bed! It freaked me out!
It was a womens voice...After thinking about it i thought it might be a guardian angel or something....still freaks me lol

I dont know if its the same but in my dreams my name is always called and i search for who is doing so and i only seem to get farther from the voice calling the faster i run the farther i get and i ve tried running away from it but it only gets closer and ive learned that the voice that calls to me is but my own of that which ni was before wanting to be again on e with me to reign over my life......

this happens to me sometimes as im going to sleep sometimes when im waking up and sometimes when im alone and wide awake

I've heard my name called out as I am either just in or out of sleep.
I've also heard my mother speak my name, I was wide awake in broad daylight and she was no where near me.
I've not got an explanation for it, but it sure is weird!

I have awoken to my name being called but when I looked no one was there and it still happens some times. I wonder often why and what do they want but have yet to figure it out.

I first learned of my first name...I awoke to a woman quietly calling my name.

I have had this happen to me and still do on occasion. I have always found it to be one of my guides trying to bring something to my attention and contacting me. Or a deceased love one trying to let me know they are there. I have been physically shaken awake, whilst living alone with not pets.

When it happens I usually ask aloud for whoever is trying to get my attention to be clear on what they want to tell me. And it helps move things long a bit.

Like many here I have been woken up to my name being calling and not having anyone present in the room also had it happen, not being able to wake up like a force is holding me down, like getting stuck in the inbewteen stages of waking up and being asleep on occaions like this I have seen a figure but not clear enough to make out what it was.

wow! this really does happen to a lot of people. and how often it sounds like the voice of a father and mother. when it happens to me, it is often my father's voice - but not always, and definitely not his voice i heard the other morning.

Unlike many of you, I've never had this happen to me; however, my husband has. He's told me on several occassions about waking up in the middle of the night because he's heard someone call his name. I've blown it off as bad dreams, heartburn and a number of other things, but he won't buy my explanations. He's had this happen in every house that he's ever lived in, including his childhood home. In the few years that he was single, he would wake when a woman kissed his cheek or his forehead and whispered his name. He's not an overly spiritual person, but he does believe in this particular spirit.

i been by myself and sound like a person was right at my head screaming my name to wake up and be totally alone.

yes...this has also happened to me and sometimes it is in my brothers voice and other times I do not even recognize the voice...til now when I realize it has happened to others, I thought it was just my imagination or something so this totally interests me to find out that it is not just me.

i may be possibly borderline - or maybe just a typical gemini. i have a dual nature, but unlike any schizophrenic i have known, i am at ease with it, whereas they seem at odds with it. but in some other ways i am like them.

eeh, yeah...ive been through that borderline thing before, i thought they were just pulling my leg, and turns out they were with that diagnosis...its prolly just an escenticy in you..

it happens to me all the time, mostly it's my dad's voice calling me, really loudly. I wake up with a start and there's nobody there, but normally about 10 mins later, my Dad comes out of his room with the same problem thinking i'd called him!!

Honestly have never woken to my name being called. But I have heard someone calling my name as clear as if they were standing next to me (but actually weren't) only to find they were just thinking about me. Happened to me on many occasions.

it has happened to me before....but usually before dmething reall bad is going to happen like someone close to me dieing or after it has happened....last time it happened to me was around the end of march and first day of april....

Honestly this has only happened to me once. A few months ago to be exact.... but there was a lot of things going on in my life and so I blew it off and didn't read into a reason why it happened. I thought it was my imagination running away with me again cause that happens a lot too..... It hasn't happened again as of yet.... But if it does I'm coming directly to you hon!

It happens to me alot even walking at nigt.The desert is a strange place at night anyway.Friday night Aug 31.I heard my magical name in Navjo the way it was given walking by the caves by my house.

i have had this happen to me several times both half asleep and when i was awake. i have encountered someone call my name when i have been alone. i think sometimes its a trick of the mind.

If I am in a deep sleep I wake up to people calling my name that were in my dreams, that really freaks me out

I can't say this has ever happened to me, but from the age of 5-7 I woke up every morning at 3am to see my parents standing in my doorway, with pale faces and pure white eyes, and with their mouths hanging open at an unnatural size... It wasn't a dream either, because I would usually get up and crawl in bed with my big sister. That house was about 100 yrs old though and I always thought it was haunted. There were other things that happened there too.

Strange, this happened to me this morning...only it didn't call my name. It was more like laughter. It scared me pretty bad though.

I have had it happen only once. I was resting on a picnic table in the Cherokee National Forest. When I heard my name and was drawn back to the Government Center around 2 miles away. When I got there I found a sommoning spell drawn into the clay.

This has happened a few times to me. Most recently, I heard me girlfriend calling to me from just inside the front door. When I went to check, unfortunately, she wasn't there.

More than once,and its the voice of the woman i love.and it broke my heart each time.we,re quite a distant apart.its just hard that she wasnt there for me to wrap my arms round

I have it happen all the time and I always get up and look to see who is calling my name. Never anyone there though.

I have had it happen once, I was sound asleep and i felt someone walk around the bed, and lean over to my ear, and it was the voice of my deceased friend, he said wake up and get up, I sat straight up in bed, i talked to his mom later on and she had the same thing happend to her that night.

I don't recall that ever happening to me, but there have been times when I've been awake and swore I heard someone call my name behind me I turn and no one is there.

It's strange but every morning at about 7.30 I hear a woman's voice screaming... a terrible soul rending scream... "Get your ass outa bed you're f**kin late for work ya c**t!
