Did a forum search, and discovered that people toss this word around effortlessly (including me), but I'm not really sure what it is.

How do you describe your soul? Is it something you're born with, or do you acquire it? Is it incapable of being injured, stolen, maturing?

Waldorf schools suggest that the soul is an umbilical chord to the heavens. The teachers are taught to speak to the children in a sing song voice because children are halfway between the heavens and earth, even though they are solid forms - and it is thought that this is the way the "Angels" communicate. Once a child reaches a certain age, the communication becomes more mechanized than fluid and we see the umbilical chord cut. While I may not agree with it, those children are learning chemistry and physics by eighth grade and are able to play multiple instruments.

My personal belief is that the soul (subtract religion) is the simple bit of energy that separates animals from plants, and is synonamous with the spirit.

I cant say for sure what I soul is but it is said in the bible ...dont know what chapter or whatever those thingies are..that if a child is born souless it will be the end of the world..supposed to be one of the last omens for the end of the world. Are we born with souls I would like to think so ..but then again like I said I am not really sure on the subject

well I feel your soul is what makes you who you are inside. It gives you your convictions, fears, love and evel the darkness that some have inside them.
A dark soul as it were. I fel a person that has no soul is no more than death itself. because you need one to have compassion unconditional love that truely is real for some one or something it gives us our passion and our will to be whom we are as it were. this is just an opinion

The soul is who we are. It is the energy that gives us life and it is the force that gives us hope. The body is like a house, and like a house when the spirit within it leaves it only sits empty, a shell.

I think the soul is something you have to believe you have. Kind of like religions, if you believe it to be true, maybe it is.

My view of a soul, like a shape, is of an extremely flexible, extremely sturdy you-shaped glass. Something brilliantly strong but oh so easy to bend the wrong way.

Excellent question BloodMother. I believe the soul stays with the brain dead host. It may be free to roam, to move about but it always returns until life is completely extinguished.
Otherwise, how would you explain supposedly brain dead people who suddenly awaken weeks, months, or years, later.

This could be true Shadowfever, since all individuals say the soul lingures with the body until the silver cord is severed...This bringing on final death, would seem likely.

From what I have read so far there seems to be some confussion re Souls and Spirits.

Carvall, I'm certainly confused between souls and spirits. Perhaps, you'd care to differentiate between the two?

Soul and spirit are sometimes interchangeable.
Yes I think even plants have souls there is something a soul can learn spending time there, same with rocks or anything else ..
The spirit of "things" is a lesson learned.

The soul has infinite capabilities. Each layer of death we experience allows us to slough off a filter. The womb, this reality, the next (ie heavan) and all teh worlds beyond that.

It is not nessesarily that "drugs" expand your conciousness, or that an NDE awkens you, or that astral progection grants greater perception; but that in these states of conciousness, the laws that filter our perceptions are temporarily circumvented.

This is a dangerous state of conciousness and is warned about in most religeons, as real harm to your spiritual developement could occur at these times.

I think that souls is what contians our emotion.

One's soul is like a deep endless pool..reflecting our best and worst qualities, ever growing as we grow and learn..it is a keeper of our secrets and our very essence.

I think of your soul as the "essence" of you. Everything you are, were or ever will be.. every emotion, thought, experience. Every bit of knowledge/wisdom you've acquired over every lifetime you lived is stored in your soul.

I view the soul as a combination of emotional, personal, and psychic energy that is composed of memories, experiences, and just plain being.

After my step-mother passed, I know that her soul exists, not only in me and my family members and her friends, but some how in the ether on earth and in the universe.

hmmm...a soul....never really thought about it so much being that I am not sure what to believe in regards to us being here...I do hope that it means that we will come back again and again in a different form and that the soul is an imprint of all of our lives here...the physical part of us would change but the soul is the same no matter what we were before or yet to become...I try to keep an open mind and this is what I hope is to be the case...because it would truly suck if this was it and there was nothing else beyond us just being here for the moment...

In my opinion the soul is our energy. The center of our being. It molds who we are going to be. We are shaped by our souls. Our compassion, love, personality, and just basically every feeling we have. It is what holds everything we learn as a person. It houses our happiness and grief. And if we are reincarnated, the sould holds these things we have learned about life. I believe that the soul never dies. An opinion, of course, but it is what I believe.

I don't know if there is a seperation between our soul and our body. I think that there is a good chance when the body dies so does the soul because it is part of the body. I don't think that a soul could be destroyed without the body being destroyed.

My opinion is that soul is the part of yourself wich is not part of your DNA. It's not something you are born with, it's something you acquire from your experiences.

Hmm.
The mental picture i gather when i think of my soul is an almost totally clear silhouette.
It is ageless, it doesnt grow except wth the contours of the body it resides inside.
Nor does it mature but it becomes aware as the bodies brain discovers and matures.
I've always felt this way but now that i am older, i can actually explain it LoL

I recently had a lesson in this in my Druid class.

A soul is not that of the dead, but of a person that is living. If you know a person that is dying but not dead, or in a coma... or such... and you see them that is their soul you are seeing... It is also the bit of us that travels during astral travels, and what travels to the next life after death.

Hopefully I didnt botch that up to much, and it made some sort of sense. :)

Thoughts, actions, morals and beliefs seem to be connected in our "minds" when we speak of soul, but once we step into the world of astral planes, then mind and soul seem to differentiate.

I am not a 100 percent sure, but I believe that you are born with a soul and that makes you who you are. Example, If you are a bad person your soul will be bad in the after life.

I believe that a soul is the actual energies that make us concious and aware of life.

I believe that a soul is what separates us from animals, it enables the higher conciousness that humans have and the striving to be better and different. I believe you are born with a soul, but that it is also possible to misuse or neglect it so much that you then lose it.

I have to disagree with the person above me animals have souls as well its what gives them their spark and personallity.

I believe that the soul is an integral part of our whole being. It allows you to feel, think, and reason based on the values you learn. The soul is a very fluid thing, twisting and warping depending on the lessons you learn and the mistakes you make. When you fall in love, it is because another person's soul has touched yours in such a way that makes it feel natural......a very rare occurrence, but nonetheless probable.

We're all born with a certain raw material, maybe a genetic predisposition, that influences our perception of the world. This is our soul in its most basic form.

The word "influence" is as strong as I want to go here because nurture finishes what nature begins.

Thus, a child's soul is the beginning, not finished. Soul is a process, neverending. Thus it can be interrupted, take a perverse turn, maybe be stunted, lie dormant .

Were all born with genetics and souls

I believe your soul is with you from the moment of conception. I think it can be changed by what happens to us and around us. I do not believe it can be stolen though.

I always thought of the soul as the essence of each of us; our likes, dislikes, memories, emotions. Our identity, our true core, and thus is near impossible to be stolen or cast aside in any way.

The soul is supposedly what carries the life force of every being. To me a soul is no more then a useless floating object that no one needs.

For me I would say that The meaning of Soul would be, what is my inner self my inner light, kind of like my core, where all energy comes from.

I believe the soul is the most difficult thing in the world to describe and there are so many schools of thought it would be foolish not sit on one ideal and decide that it must be right.

The soul is a personal thing and a personal belief, no one is right or wrong, no one has the answers to the question. It is up to you what your soul is and how it exists.

I personally believe my soul is a form of energy that controls the machine called the body. My soul is my consciousness, my essence and my reason for existing in the first place. I don't believe it can be stolen, taken over or managed because its a free form that no one but I can control.

It's kind of hard to argue with someone when they see both sides of the arguement.

My opinion on spirit and the soul is:

Rock has spirit, it vibrates with frequency which many use as a source of power such as in crystal therapy.

Plant has spirit, it includes the spirit of rock however it also has the capacity to grow and adapt to conditions of it's evironment.

The animal spirit has significant capacity to move, as well as grow, they possess (in my opinion) a small quantity of virtues inherent to that form (dogs = loyal etc)

The human spirit contains the capacity for choice, it is immortal (does not entirely devolve to lesser spirits apon the end of mortal life), and we are made in Gods image (ie we contain all the spiritual virtues) all though due to our capacity for choice, cannot exhibit any of them in perfect form (as can an animal.)

Prophets have the capacity to communicate with God directly as they are born to Buddhahood (whereas we must seek enlightenment.)

God is the spirit that creates from nothing.

well in my thread as I said how do we not know that the Blood is what connects the brain and heart giving us our soul

FMRL builds a heirarchical view from rock to human, and creates a case for our imperfect presentation of soul (because of free will), maintains that our souls are immortal and that God creates matter out of nothing.

Let's just go with all this, even the God part: What happens if we all die, if there is truly an apocalyptic event? The earth remains but we don't. What happens to our souls then?

I believe that your soul came from many pasted down lives that have been lived. So I will have to say that your soul matures with each life. Learning new and different skills while using its past experiences.

Your soul is your energy in the body and it is different in each individual body. Therefore it is unique

I beleive everything is a Soul, just embodying all kind of different material shapes.

Still, they all share the same and one essence.

As far as I know you're born with it. I really wouldn't even know how to describe a soul.

i feel it represents the very essence of our being. it also may have something to do with our identities as well. i know it's strongly connected to energy of some kind.

well i thought i posted to this tread but i guess not...i beleive the soul is constantly recyled through life, each cyle we learn new lessons, and take another step towards obtaining spiritual perfection

This leads right back to creation and divine essence because humans cannot envision absolute and complete nothingness. We go to black emptiness, which is still something.

The only thing that can be said is that we are sentient self-aware beings. Soul exists as part of life. Where there is no life, there is no soul.

Soul is immortal only in the sense that we have a connection to other humans and other living things.

It's that connection with flock, herd, pod or species and the investment in its continuity that is immortal.

It's not so much personal.

Your soul is your true self. Who you truely are. I myself have a Vampiric soul and once this blood and flesh shell dies, my true self will ascend to the astral planes.

BloodMother, you bewilder me. You offer up great lead-ins but offer nothing of yourself. You make a great moderator, continuing the discussion, throwing more ideas out there and yet offering nothing of what you hold to be true. Could it be you have lost your faith and therefore the capacity to know your own soul? Or do you know your soul so well that you can use your knowledge to push us to find the truth?

A soul is who you are, it can't change but it can mature, my soul happens to be on of a person that forgives, and is romantic. If you need to read som1's soul look into their eyes and it will be clear
