Since I was young I have had an interest in the 'unexplained', including myths, legends and the occult.
Is it something we need to escape from in our mundane lives to make life more interesting.
Even after some myths have been proven to be hoaxes, we still choose to believe...

What is it that makes you want to believe even when science and the so called experts say 'no way' ?!?!?
Do you have a particular favourite myth that remains special and why?

I probably believe because I think to myself, theres more to life than this crap :)

Escapism, via a good book is one thing... Waving tree branches at your cat and expecting them to turn into a panther, is another.
As for your question regarding the unexplained appeal -- the draw, for me, are the things that cannot simply be explained away. I find it comical that scientist have the ego to believe they can deduce the cause of almost any phenomena -- when, it really is all conjecture. A good argument does not a fact make. So, for me, I am that student waving their hand annoyingly and maniacally to constantly ask "why"?!

Very well put but with regards to escapism, few would deny that relaxation and recreation, in measure, are healthy activities which enable us to enjoy life more and to engage better with others. We all need some time off. However, many people are becoming so habituated to escaping reality that engaging with others has become a scary and unwelcome prospect.

Because as humans we generally like to believe that there's something out there that is more than the mundane. Whether it's something to be conquered, or something unexplained to puzzle over, or something to cop the blame when everything seems to go wrong, or something to reaffirm your faith in whatever you believe in.

Although I will admit escapism is a big thing too. I practice it daily ;)

I agree, entirely! I have floor to celings covered with books. That is my escape. Always will be. Still, I remember to take the rose colored glasses off from time to time (only to rush and put them back on, of course).
You're right when you say more and more, people are looking to live in this fabricated reality than accept/change the actualy one we all live within. If you think about it, it's a governments dream to have so many easily distracted sheep!

BTW, my favorite myth is still The Legend of Sleepy Hollow followed closely by the White Witch of Rose Hall...

As for a serious answer, I like the unexplained simply because it's unexplainable, I like logic & if there is no logical answer, I muse over it, which draws me to it

They way i feel about the unexplained, is that everything can be explained, even if its total crap manifesting in your own head. If been explained to you. Why would you want to escape from reality? Life can be sooo much more interesting if thats the way you live it. I like to bring my own reality with me. really stumps alot of people. " can get me a tomato and paint chip sandwich? no lead please" This chick has two heads. I think i may be a bit eccentric. hmm, i have to think on that.

Escapism is not defined by the behaviour itself but the motivation behind it. Anything from sport to fashion to sex can become escapist activities.

So why the love for the 'occult'?

The thrill of the unknown? Doing something naughty? Dabbling in the dark side?

mmmmm sex. I like the occult BECAUSE its unexplained. To "dabble" in something that not alot of people understand is sort of exciting. not only that but it opens your eyes and your mind to ALOT of possiblilities, that most people are closed to.

I hold a fascination in the Loch Ness monster i have srudies so many reports and encounters commiing out of the Loch but no substanial proof, but i enoy the mystery

I am intrigued to the unexplained, being that there must be a reason for it in some shape or form. We are curious as people so we are constantly looking for an answer for anything that is unexplained.
T feel there is more explaination out there yet we just have not found it or seen it yet.

As not very much is unknown from my experiances, I would have to take in the unexplained as portals for new train of thought. Such as when new ideas hit me, I take them on as a new project, to tackle and decipher.

You may put this into any category you desire, since I see you are on a role with the others as well. But bare in mind that my intuitions for the unexplained and the real outcomes for what they tend to be, are sometimes more accurate than not.

Sceptics may call the unexplained what they will, but proof is always in the eye of the beholder themselves. What one individual things is truth and reality, another casts it off as pure illusion, no matter if it is real or dramatized.

For me, it's more of a power trip. I hate to be so insultingly honest with myself, but the occult studies stemmed from knowledge that common masses didn't have. By studying it, learning it, and possibly even proving conventional science wrong - there's a possibility of holding sway over the so called experts.

My favorite myth? Merlin.

Alright, now that you have put me under the so called perverbial spotlight, I would have to say one of my favorites would have to be the Bermuda Triangle, unexplained, but by no means a myth, this which is also connected to the myth of Atlantis. You had to ask.

what a great subject, although not much activity from 'The Triangle' of late, I was unaware that Atlantis had something to do with it, I had perceived it to be in a location more akin to Europe.

The Bermuda Triangle has to be one of my favorites also, I've read up alot on it.

Mysteries, the unexplained, conspiracy theories; almost human nature to believe there is still something out there that hasn't been proven (or disproven). It means there is still some adventure left, something to discover. You are in good company.

I've heard of Atlantis being in the Caribbean somewhere. Something about a walkway underwater and pottery found in the middle of the ocean. There was another thread about it somewhere in here.

But then I've also heard that the Freemasons are the original Atlanteans.

If science could explain the unexplained...it would spoil alot of fun for me.

After all in momments of boredom I can think about things like......freemasons being atlanteans .......priceless.

Mary Stewart wrote a great trilogy called, fittingly, The Merlin Trilogy. Instead of making him seem as though he was an all controlling wizard - it humanized him. Great books.

The main reason I dig the storyline of Merlin is because he was never the central figure of the stories - always an advisor. He pulled strings and made things happen indirectly and was eventually the standard by which all wizards were eventually modeled against. Even Taliesan who the Welsh revered above all other Bards - and one who actually existed - was often compared to this fictional Merlin.

I guess i'm drawn to the Occult because it differs from the mundane everyday life that most of us have to endure. Yes it's escapism to a point, but there's nothing wrong with that.

The Occult intrigues us because it's out of the ordinary. There are mysteries that for the most part will never be solved. That. I think, is the attraction. They keep us guessing!

I think my personal favourite myth is Atlantis. Anything to do with submerged cities fascinates me beyond belief...

I personally believe that there is more to life than what we see, what we see is what we believe to be reality and I think it is just what is accepted as reality. I also believe that there is life on other planets, and that is my favorite belief. I think we were born for more but somewhere in our evolution to the present day, we have lost a lot of the "gifts" given to use from not believing in them. As such, I believe we not gone forward but have gone backwards.

Thats a really good idea Molly, that we can 'devolve' because our minds get more closed with each generation. I mean, children believe in a lot more than most adults do...maybe kids are actually more advanced than us?

I believe your right Bloodlife. Mushroom circles are said to be where fairies dance and by driving an iron spike or nail into the ground in the middle, your supposed to be able to rid the area of fairies.

Atlantis and Lesbos. Lesbos was a real place, but a lot of info was sure lost over time. And why was that? Another conspiracy theory. Probably those Freemasons shut down Lesbos.

Also, I want to know so much, it's more than hunger, like an urgent craving. And yet, as much satisfaction as I get with a "problem solved," it's that very raw drive, the search, that keeps my interest ---the mystery.

And as a Freemason, I can honestly say I've never been to Atlantis - or Lesbos. I'm lucky if I get to leave New England. But then, maybe that's because I'm not in the upper echelons.

It being a Greek Island and the Freemason's Scottish by birth, the likelihood that the Mason's shut down the island is slim to none. However, we could assume that the Knights of St.John of Jerusalem, Cyprus, Rhodes and Malta may have had something to do with it. I guess it's a personal mythos. How I incorporate the goddess in my life. She wasn't another Diana, Aphrodite or Hera. Sappho and her students actually worshipped them in their daily practice.

And because that life she lived is so shrouded in mystery it's like the MIsts of Avalon for me.

I can see how that would be intriguing. I spent close to five years researching a particular pirate and came up with little more than most have on this same guy. Only four hundred years ago and his life is already being covered up by the clouds of time. At this point, he and his exploits are becoming a thing of myth even though he definitely left a mark on the face of piracy.

Wolfesbohne, history, even recent history quickly becomes mythical. Look at the whole Camelot rememberances of John Kennedy and his brief administration. History is constantly rewritten, reinterrupted, and redistributed based on the political climate of the day. There is often more truth in the legend than there is in the accepted, current history.

I am drawn to the unexplained because of some of the things which I hav witnessed. No-one knows what those things are yet there must be some sort of an explination to those things.

The myth of the lock ness monster stay true in my heart for two reasons. I refuse to believe that a creature like that couldn't exsist we have found things in this world that we thought were long gone and bam they are found in huge numbers.

The second reason is because i'm a keltic and i believe my ansester and what they have claimed to see.

I think it is in our nature to want to believe in something beyond our reality.. Intuitively we know there is more to this existence..

I suppose I simply like the idea of something being unexplained. It means that theres still more out there to learn, more out there to know, and that perhaps not everything can be reduced to a numerical equation.

I like to believe in myths and things because, lets face it, people do not know everything. And it's really boring to think that they do. Okay so this this and this have been proven scientifically.. who the fuck cares. Let me have my fairies. let me have my mermaids. let me have my vampires and werewolves.. they're fun, they're exciting... they're NOT human..... that's what gets me.. anything not human is fun.

I have always enjoyed the concept of the Norse gods and mythology. The idea of giants and titans once roaming the earth in a battle with man and god alike.

I also enjoy the idea that much of the world was created, formed, and eventually shaped by the actions of gods waging war and throwing tantrums.

The unexplained has a pull simply for the reason that it is the unexplained. Everyone is curious, and it's something to be curious about. You may call is escapism, thats fine because truly in a sense that is what it is. Curiosity helps everyone escape the mundane of the normal life. If we didn't wonder about things, no questions would ever be asked. And for that no questions would ever be answered.

The thing for me is just general curiousity. I always have to know why and how. That, and science can only prove so much.

Why do I love the unexplained? Because I love finding explanations. In my mind, there is as much beauty in cold hard fact as there is in elaborate fantasy. I also have no problem with keeping those two things completely separate. Myths, and legends, and fantasy are wonderful escapes, and very stimulating to the mind, but to me, reality is far from dreary.

Just because something has been proven absolutely, doesn't make it any less amazing. The world is full of new things we're creating and discovering every day, while some people sit entrenched in fantasies of the same old myths we've been going over and over for centuries. To me they'd be a lot more interesting if they were true, because then we could actually learn about them instead of just making things up to make them seem cooler.

I also see a very big difference between 'unexplained' and 'fantasy'. Unexplained implies that there is a possibility of explaining it at some point in the future when we have the means to do so. Once explained, it can be explored, and the discoveries can continue. Fantasy is just something which has been made up for entertainment without even the most remote basis in any kind of fact. It's fun to fool around with, but why would I ever want to believe in it?

That said, my favourite fantasy is vampires (big surprise here, considering what site I'm on). I've loved vampire stories, ever since I was a little kid. My favourite myths are the Greek legends. I love finding the real history behind the exaggerations that have become the stories of today.

what I believe that about 95 percent of what perceive as paranormal can be explained and has scientific explanations behind it, after making sure and discounting anything that the mind could make up. the other 5 percent is very real and I know my self how crazy you can look until it happens to some one else as well. I have had very real experiences that could *NOT* have been explained.

....and that's why this thread is called The Unexplained.

I just have to look at ourselves as human beings, go outside and look at the wonder of nature to stop and wonder at life.

Not to mention the strange things that happen such as ghosts that can't be explained but you know you have witnessed and seen something that is unique and unexplainable.

Also I got to believe there is some mystery left in the world, that not everything is fully explained and there are still things remaining to be discovered.

I enjoy the "unexplained" for many reasons. One of them and most likely the most important most days, is simply learning. If you think about it everything we know now at some point was unknown to us. We had to learn everything we know now. So why should it stop?

As for the unseen.. well to some people what others call unseen is not quite so unseen. And again I had to learn what I was seeing that others around me could not.. how to control it to a degree etc.

I saw a few mentions of escaping reality and I would like one of those that believe or seem to believe that a belief in occult things is trying to escape form this so called reality... please define this reality. After all is not what each person sees and knows to be true for them their reality?

I have many unexplained cross references that ellude to one another, like Merlin, Avalon being Atlantis, the traveling Isle, floating into the Bermuda Triangle. Or the fact that the river Styx which is what Wolfbohne was talking about the path under the earth, leading to Meridian, or Atlantis once again, which was supposedly lost beneath the seas for all time...Where merlins body went, after being trapped within a crystal cave on Avalon.

Many many wonderful mysteries still being studied and referenced. By habit I tend to cross reference a load of these, as most of them do make sense to one another.

But you are very accurate bro, Freemasons were according to history, what was left of the Atlantians. This is why they wanted to make the America the new Atlantis by starting the 13 colonies, as was the myth of the 13 tribes of Israel...But this I think is a long story taken to another thread unrelated to vampirism/phenominon/occult in general.

The unexplained itslef is what keeps me going... The myths and legends that collide and, in may ways, explain better than science the strange facts and artefacts that surrounds us is what keeps me alert and wishing for more...
The fact that the myths are something that every culture has and the fact that they often morph, creating connections that all seem to lead to the same original source, that is what creates the interest...
Witches, witchcraft... also parts of legends, also source for science research, also... Never actually seen one... never actually believed, but since they are part of our past and ancestral culture, the fact that there are so many things and beings on this planet that we yet have to discover... That is what makes this "unexplained" so interesting... If we have explained everything, what would be left? Where will we redirect our curiosity?

It is a well known fact that science can't explain or get it all right. There are mysteries in this world they are still trying to unravel, the human body is a classic example. Try as they may they cannot create a human being without sperm and an egg... all they can do is clone or copy it.

There are mysteries in life that are unexplainable... the Atlantians are one of the greatest. I recently started reading the Emerald Tablets of Thoth. Who claimed to be an Atlantian, who sent priests out into the world and they created a Mayan colony where the tablets were discovered in a temple.

As the Atlantians and the Egytians were so closely related, namingly the Sumerians themselves, the ancient teaching from numerous records including the emerald tablets details partial histories of the efforts derived from the Golden ages or Eras of mankind.

As stated above, all is connected and interchageable... Even the mention of Atlantis (who, for all we know, might've been an invention of some ancient historian who still believed that the Earth was flat and that there was nothing behind the horizont of the sea, because no one ever advetured there)... As with this tablets... Is there actual proof that what is written on them is true? Or we like to let our imagination wander, when maybe those tablets are just some stories written in ancient ages and that were supposed to fuel the imagination of the kids?

I think their are a lot of people out their who, wants to discover something that no one else can and i think that they believe in things after they are proven false because they want to believe that the experts or scientist are wrong and they are right, i believe in some things but the people who try to debunk what i believe in are not good at debunking things so i will believe until i prove it false...

I tend to keep an open mind about a lot of things. There's still a lot of things that not even science can explain, sometimes you can't even place logic in the mix.

With the space program back on track I think the future will hold so much more that will need explaining for both science and mystery

I'm sorry Soulshroude. I'm having a hard time with the whole Atlantean thing. Freemasonry, the 12 (14 actually) Tribes, and the 13 Colonies, maybe. But Freemasonry and Atlantis kind of falls into the category of Batboy and the National Enquirer for me.

I'd love to hear more about Merlin and Meridian though.

I believe in the supernatural. I don't care what experts say! How can they say things can't be there? I believe and I always will!

Like you I don't think science has got it quite right as they only use the equipment that fits the criteria to what they specify. I'm sure that some ghosts and such fit outside of their expectations.

All science is, is a system for gathering knowledge. It is not some over-generalized group of jerks intent on proving everything wrong. The whole point of science is to make new discoveries, and to figure out how things work, and why.

Scientists only come into conflict with occultists, super-naturalists, etc. because the whole system is based upon proof. If you can't prove it, why would any scientist declare it is true?

Of course there are scientific theories which cannot be proven, but these (as with all scientific proofs) are set up with the specific intent that the moment it is conclusively proven wrong, or a better theory comes around, it is replaced.

Scientists love the unexplained, because it's their job to explain it. They don't want to prove anything 'right' or 'wrong', they just want to prove it. So of course they aren't going to believe something without a shred of evidence. They're the ones who brought us out of the Dark Ages, they're hardly going to put us back into one.

(Sorry, just my little rant about science, as referenced throughout this thread. Someone had to defend it.)
