Good or Evil?

I feel this is a very debatable topic, and does have answers to it.

I would like to say that myself I believe that there was no which came first.. I feel that they were both here all the time...

I have always thought that good an evil dwell in the same house regardless to whom you ask.. I feel that it balances the other out and that the existance of both were there from the beginning of time as we all know it..

Now if you go into the Christian beliefs you would say that good was here first..

Good and evil, as I see it, both must have always existed since the beginning of time. They balance each other out.

But then again, it all depends on how you define the terms. If you believe that 'good' refers to 'innocence', perhaps mankind started off as good. But if you define evil as not resisting certain urges or instinct, we may have entered this world as an evil race.

So I stand with my belief that both existed at the same time.

I believe that good preceded evil.

From a religious standpoint I am a Christian and I do believe that the creation of the universe was an intentional act and was, at the beginning good.

Even Christian believers debate whether "The Devil" is the purveyor of all evil, or if it rests in mankind.

If you remove faith and God from the equation, I still say that good came before evil. If you theorize that mankind evolved from other creatures...Where is "evil" evidenced in nature outside of the influence of man? Nature, in and of itself, is "good" or at worse neutral. Not until mankind comes into the picture is there any evidence of "evil" acts or intentions.

So either way, biblical creation or evolutionary development Evil does not have any influence on Earth until mankind shows up and Good precedes Evil.

Well at the beginning of the earth there was no one to be "good" or no one to be "evil". So good and evil never did exist till Adam and Eve were created and ate of the tree that was forbidden.

Ok let me clarify what I was stating.. I knew you meant at the beginning of time but as I stated in my first post if one goes by the Biblical aspect then God was good and created everything out of nothing and therefore if you go by that then the good came first..

However if you do not go with this part as being how we came to be here.. Then I stick to my belief that both existed at the same time not one before the other..

Devina:

If you look at nature outside the influence of man, where do you see the evidence of Evil?

Either biblically or through the gradual development of nature with NO influence of a devine being, how does evil manifest itself, other than through the actions of humans?

KCRC -

I must disagree with you. People are not evil. People didn't invent nor have evil because they want it, in my opinion...

I think "Evil" is an energy, and therefor, as all other energies, should have been made when the Earth (or the universe) for that matter was created.

Good on the other hand, in my opinion, is NOT an energy. It is something that has to be done manually.

What is my logic on my opinion? It's rather simple actually. People can do evil easily..out of instinct..but good is a lot harder to do. Manual work is always harder than automatic work.

So I think Evil came first.

We simply do everything to survive, reproduce, and enjoy ourselves. All animals do the same things. Just because we have a bigger brain, more power..so on and so on, doesn't mean only mankind is evil. Anything living has evil in it, just in smaller portions...and they do less damage.

Going with KCRC on this.
Good first, evil .....came with mankind.

Yes it is easy to do evil, but from my perspective, it is JUST AS EASY to do good if you chose to do so.

Babies are born innocent, we teach them evil as they grow. We can just as easily teach them goodness.

KCRC,

From where I stand in my thoughts I would have to say that even in the natural occurance of things that evil was here to because if the sun shown down upon the land without water then the grass would die, and crops would not grow. So would there not be an underlying evil within the sun, and all the other forces of nature as well?

Because evil destroys things, and things have always been destroyed since time began..

Well, if your definition of evil is the absence of any given good thing, I can see your point.

I see good as inherant. The way nature works uninfluenced by outside forces...The natural balane...is good.

Evil I see as intentional. Not in the natural ebb and flow following the laws of physics and nature. If something falls from a tree and dies; there is no evil in it. If a lion kills and impala to eat and feed it's young; there is no evil in it. If you accidentally cut someone off in traffic and as a result they put a bullet in your head and kill you...They manifested evil.

Evil in essence of the word is man made...something can't be "Evil" unless humans say it is."Evil" as you say is not fuild or living entity.it is a concept that was invented to explain something or someone with bad intentions or "evil" thoughts or emotions. When the world came to be...not by the hand of an all powerful "God" There was no evil...as far as we know.If you go by many cultures..."Evil" came into the world from a dark dimension...trying to keep the light or "good" from taking over.

and Vampirika before you tear into my post or try to bash what I say...Im giving my opinion on the subject...not looking for confrontation.

I feel that you are right on this as well.. I agree that they do have some if not all of the same 7 deadly sins we do, and therefore are evil as well, but they also carry good within them too..

I believe nothing is anything until humans "say it is". Because the bottom line is we catagorized and defined everything as we know it today. Including all that is "good".

Devina -

I think the ultimate question is what is more in this world...good or evil. Then we can guess what the world ultimately is..more good or evil..and that's probably how it was started and meant to be.

Good and Evil go together like Yin and Yang.....they are equal parts of everything and you cannot have one with out the other.....
One may be stronger at times than the other but, again they are always still together.....
So my opinion is that they came together as one and will always be.....

Neither good nor evil came first.
Man came first and we invented evil, making good come into play.

A newborn is called an innocent cause they have no sense of good or evil, right or wrong. They are taught this by the ones around them. Very easily they can be twisted into thinking evil is good, and vise versa.

Think about this, if I don't help a stranger is that evil? If I don't rob that man is that good?

Both are actions we have to decide upon. We have to look within ourselves for the answer. For we all posses both good and evil.

In summary, which came first good or evil?
Both, the moment man came into existance.

Good and evil is not black and white. Good and evil might not even exist at all. It’s all just perception. I think if there is a defined good and evil they would have started at the same time. A primordial piece of slime might have done something that it thought was good while another piece of primordial slime that was watching might have thought “damn that was evil”. Neither came first.

Nature is neither good nor evil. A tree cannot decide to fall onto a man, a tiger cannot decide whether to kill that deer or not. A tree either falls or not, a tiger is either hungry or not.

In all of the universe, nothing is either good nor evil. It's a decision we make and our actions following that decision decide whether it is good or evil.

Good and evil is not an energy or destruction or creation, it's action carried out by a being with the compasity to understand the difference between the two.

Neither can exist without the other. What is good without evil? What is right without wrong? The logical answer is that both had to come into existence at the same time. However, in the beginning there may or may not have just been ‘one’. Existing ‘as is‘ until it was deemed ‘good‘ or ‘evil‘ by us.

We may never know the true answer.

Good and Evil are words. They have no meaning, no concreteness or reality other than that ascribed to them by humans.

In the beginning of time, before the existence of humans, there was no good nor evil, as WE think of it. There were no words, no meanings, no free will.

Crap! that went all wrong. Here is the piece in full. Basically it is the logic behind what a lot of you are saying about evil. That evil *only* exists because somebody came up with the idea of evil. That concept can be extended to scientific laws (like the law of gravity). Here is the piece again (with the first line, that puts it all in context).

after a while he say "Do you believe in ghosts?"
"No," I say.
"Why not?"
"Because they are un-sci-en-ti-fic."
"They contain no matter," I continue, "and have no energy and therefore, according to laws of science, do not exist except in peple's minds."
"Of course," I add, "the laws of science contain no matter and have no energy either and therefore do not exist except in people's mind. It is best to be completly scientific about the whole thing and refuse to believe in either ghosts or the laws of science. That way you are safe. That doesn't leave you very much to believe in, but that is scientific too."
"I do not know what you are talking about," Chris says. "One of the kids at the YMCA camp says he believes in ghosts."
"He was just spoofing you."
"No he wasn't. ......."
"what is his name?" Sylvia says.
"Tom White Bear."
"Ohhh, Indian!" (Red Indian :D)
I laugh. "I guess I'm going to have to take that back a little," I say. "I was thinking of European ghosts."
"What is the difference?"
"Well, Indians sometimes have a different way of looking at things, which I am not saying is completly wrong. Science is not part of Indian Tradition."
"Sure I say reversing myself, "I believe in ghosts too."
"It's completly natural," I say, "to think of Europeans who believed in ghosts or Indians who believed in ghosts as ignorant. The scientific point of view has wiped out every other view to a point where they all seem primitive, so that if a person today talks about ghosts or spirits he is considered ignorant or may be nutty. It is just all but completly impossible to imagine a world where ghosts can actually exist."
"my own opinion is that the intellect of modern man isn't that superior. IQs aren't that much different. Those Indians and medival men were just as intelligent as we are, but the context in which they thought was completly different. Within that context of thoughts, ghosts and spirits are quite as real as atoms, particles, photons and quants are to modern man. In that sense I believe in ghosts. Modern man has his ghosts and spirits too, you know."
"What?"
"Oh, the laws of Physics and of logic ... the number system ... the principle of algebric substituion. They are ghosts. We just believe in them so thoroughly that they seem real."
"For example, it seems completly natural to presume that gravitation and laws of gravitation existed before Issac Newton. It would sound completly nutty to think that untill seventeenth century there was no gravity."
"So when did this law start? Has is always existed?"
"what I am driving at," I say, "is the notion that before the beginning of the earth, before the sun and the stars were formed, before the primal generation of anything, the law of gravity existed."
"Sitting there, having no mass of its own, no energy of its own, not in anyone's mind because there wasn't anyone, not in space because there was no space either, not anywhere-this law of gravity still existed?"
"If that law of gravity existed," I say, "I honestly don't know what a thing has to do to be nonexistent. It seems to me that law of gravity has passed every test of nonexistence there is. You cannot think of a single attribute of nonexistence that that law of gravity didn't have. Or a single scientific sttribute of existence it did have. And yet it is still 'common sense' to believe that it existed."
"Well, I predict that if you think about it long enough you will find yourself going round and round and round and round untill you finally reach only one possible, rational, intelligent conclusion. The law of gravity and gravity itself did not exist before issac Newton. No other conclusion makes sense."
"And what that means is that that law of gravity exists nowhere except in people's heads! It's a ghost! We are all very conceited about running down other people's ghosts but just as ignorant and barbaric and superstitious about our own."
"Why does everyone believe in the laws of gravity then?"
"Mass hypnosis. In a very orthodox form known as education."
"The problem, the contradiction that scientists are stuck with, is that of mind. Mind has no matter or energy but they can not escape its predominance over everything they do. Logic exists in mind. Number only exists in mind. i do not get upset when scientists say that ghosts exists in mind. It is only that gets me. Science is only in your mind too, it is just that that doesn't make it bad. Or ghosts either."
"Laws of nature are human inventions, like ghosts. Laws of logic, of mathematics are also human inventions, like ghosts. The whole blessed thing is a human invention, including the idea that it isn't a human invention. The world has no existance whatsoever outside the human imagination. It's all a ghost, and in the antiquity was so recognised as a ghost, the whole blessed world we live in. It's run by ghosts. We see what we see because these ghosts show it to us, ghosts of Moses and Christ and the Buddha, and Plato, and Descartes, and Rousseau and Jefferson and lincoln, on and on and on. Issac Newton is a very good ghost. One of the best. Your common sense is nothing more than voices of thousands and thousands of these ghosts from the past. Ghosts and more ghosts. Ghosts trying to find their place among the living."

Good and evil are relative to each other so were created at the same time, for one without the other is an impossibility in the universe, IMO. With only 'good' you would not know what evil was and the opposite is true as well. Something is evil by its comparison to good, IMO.

To offer up a viewpoint besides Christianity....

Greek mythology states that in the beginning there was Chaos. Chaos existed before anything else. From Chaos arose Nyx (the night) and Erebus (the darkness). From the union of Nyx and Erebus, comes Ether (light), Nemesis (vengeance), Eris (dispute) and also death, gossip and fraud.

Basing my opinion on this, I would say that evil came first.

Honestly... I'm more of the thought that evil came first, though narrowly ahead of good. Why?

So, given humans have been given cognitive thought, I assume their first thoughts were based on a need to survive. At that point, there was no need for the concept of 'good' or 'evil' - just survival.

As the early humans lived, some survived and some died as per a way of life. Let's say things are changing in the way of weather patterns, and food is becoming less and less available. Human A has the inclination to steal food from Human B. Though this inclination is based on survival, it doesn't change that Human A could just as easily spend time searching for food than premeditate on stealing food from Human B. That makes Human A's inclination to steal a 'bad' thought, which is akin to the start of evil. Human B could then counter Human A's inclinations by voluntary offering help, which is a 'good' act, and akin to the start of 'goodness'.

Of course, this is all a gross generalization, and good could have easily come before evil... but this is just the way I think of it.

BloodMother -

Like I've said before, nothing "meant" anything before people gave it a "meaning". Does that mean that the ocean really wasn't the ocean when it was just formed? Does that mean the wind was something else before people came about and named it? All of nature was all the same without us, and so was good and evil.

Vampirewitch39 -

Yes, I am asking exactly that. Was this planet, with all of it's energies and nature, originally meant to be good or evil?

I am literally pulling my hair out to answer this question. It's really food for the thought.

I would say neither or both.

Does evil and good exist in nature or it's only in humans' point of view?

Many would say good and evil don't exist in human nature, and nature itself, because moralism doesn't affect human nature.

However we are born innocent but even selfish,so does that make us evil?Because we are taught that selfishness is evil, or that little bit of selfishness is needed for survival, therefore that bit of selfishness is good? Or it's simply neutral?

But then there are religious theories that would disagree with this, but who really is right?

Heh I'm still pulling my hair out.

There is no good without evil and no evil without good. Plus of course it's basic human nature.

I have to agree with Wiccanpothead42024.

I think that the presence of human kind brought about the "evidence" of evil and therefore good.

After all... do we not each decide on our own what is good and what is evil?

If a child is taught that murder is good the child will murder. and if a child is taught that life is scared then the child will honor life and abhor murder.

Therefore is it not possible that they both existed at the exact same time for all eternity?

Also isn't is possible they sort of formed around eachother. everything began as true neutral. but then someone became jealous of what another had and killed him for it. the one who was killed was an innocent victim, and therefore good. the other, acting on jealousy and rage, was deamed evil.

In all things, it is how we perceive them to be. In the bible, until Adam and Eve ate of the tree of knowledge, they did not understand "good or evil". "Good or evil" is only a perception of how we view a specific action to be, it is unique to the individual person. Good or evil does not exist until we choose to label a specific person, place or thing, "good or evil". As such, all things are both.

Good and Evil do not exist. They are simply terms of ethics and morals that individuals assign as per their own opinions.

True, what people would call good or evil is completely individual, but is also dependant of the society in general, and the time one lives in.

A forest fire destroys. It is bad (evil). When and only when a new forest starts to bloom, is it when it creates, and that is good.

Creating a weapon, a gun, a missile. This is good?

Weapons are created to destroy, not to create.

I am talking about the core of things. The original meanings of "create" and "destroy". Lets not dig too deep here and twist things around.

I see a lot of people bringing up that if an animal kills aother animal, it's "natural" and therefor good..but if a person kills an animal..it's bad and un-natural.

Why is that so? Do we not need food to survive, just like all other living things? Just because we are on the top of the food-chain, doesn't make us evil. It doesn't make us anymore evil than any other living creature, to be more correct..

I believe in the balance of the good and evil. All came out from this balance and both, good and evil are manifested through a lot of things. The percentage of one or another in some thing gives the identity of that thing. Thus we have to reach again that balance, the primordial harmony, the primal "Adamic" state, unbalanced.

I am by no means on expert on Theology and I really only know the Chrsitian version well enough to comment. The Apocrypha (books left out of the bible, Latin 450bc) talks about this some. The story is not "secret" to modern times.

So according the the old testament G_d basically determined what was "evil". Lucifer was an Arch Angel and wasn't buying in to the whole "worship me" thing. It's a really interesting text.

Based on this I'll say GOOD.

My personal belief is different, but we'll save that for another topic.

and created a place for light to dwell

or vice versa. I truly believe good/evil is a concept created by human beings.
simply to control the youth.Without this concept then imagine were every one would be if the words good/evil were not formed ?

I believe they were used to control people to do the bidding and thus far has worked marvelously

I dont believe that killing something for food is a bad or unnatural thing. However, and argument could be made that killing for fun is quite evil. Then again, haven't you ever seen a cat kill a mouse and play with it and then not eat it? Just something to think about.

Anyway, back to the main topic. I believe that good and evil both came at the same time and are both necessary. There is just as much to be learned from an evil act as their is from a good one. The feelings associated with these different act are very different however. Its a matter of morals in my opinion.

I don't believe that either exist. The idea of evil and good are simply labels that human beings came up with to explain/punish/control their society and it's actions. Going even farther..humans cannot even come to agreement on what is good and what is evil. It's all based on individual perception of right and wrong. Good and evil were created together by humans to describe human action.

I might think it's evil for someone to lie...someone else may think that it is good to lie in the right circumstance. Which is correct?

It's all relative and completely based on personal perspective...good and evil...just a scale of measurement created by man.

So far a few has seen my thinking on this with in themselves.

what truly is evil or good?
it is what people perceive it to be. Thus what ever the law of the land or country you live in that is what is good or evil.

Live in a land where cannibalism is legal then it is not evil but something allowed and accepted.
Where as live somewhere were eating meats is illegal any eating a cheese burger would be thrown in jail for consumption of something not allowed thus being evil.

It really depends on what "how things started" that you want to look at . biblical or eveolution .

To go with the biblical theory . To me it seems like they were totaly with out good or evil . The concept wasn't introduced untill the serpent came in and introduced evil .

actually for speaking in a Christian raised life style. In biblical sense evil would not have been introduced until eve and adam ate of the forbidden fruit then evil was known. in that sense.

However I stand by my thoughts that good and evil did not arrive until people decided to create words to bring forth fear and terror to control their people.
