How powerful do you think numbers really are? Are numbers just numbers, or something more? Do you believe certain numbers, or a combination of them can bring out supernatural activities? Do you believe in good luck numbers and bad luck numbers?

oh numbers have a personality of their own. nine is a sly mysterious old thing. four is kind of a bumbling old fool - pompous and totally behind the times. i can't help but raise a smile at seven's laconic sense of humour.
101 fills many people with dread.
good old 42 can always be relied upon to bring me about in laughter.
4,972 seems friendly enough - but i wouldn't trust him - he has his own agenda.

hey dont work properly. if you lay the figure for eight on its side, it becomes the figure for infinity; but if you lay eight bottles of beer on their side, you do not have an infinite amount of beer. why not? explain that mathmaticians if you are all so clever.

I have always had a fixation on the number 7 and any combination of it. I tend to add the numbers on license plates and houses. If they are close to 7 or something that came from 7, I am cool. LOL I have NO clue why. My son was born on the 7th. Maybe that's why.

karnstein,

The symbol for infinity is a representation of the mobius strip, not the number eight, so your logic is very silly.

Ancient mystics and philosophers placed a lot of significance upon numbers, birthdates, etc. Many rulers would consult these men to find the right day to commence a battle for example.

I think there is something there with numbers, it seems certain combinations bring about significant meanings. If your interested in numeralology I suggest a book to read - Cheiro's book of numbers by (naturally) Cheiro.

Personally I feel that any power in numbers is what a person gives it. Anything dealing with numbers is either because of fear or superstition.

Take the number 666 for example, many people feel that this is an evil number because there have been various stories connected to demonic and devilish works. It is fear of those events occurring that people fear, not the number itself.

So true Abstract.
The only power 666 has is over those that fear it as a sign or symbol of evil.
Now if the question was do symbols have power…… hell yeh.

I do believe in the power of numbers, and I happen to have a lucky number. The number 2.

Most things in life and the universe have some apsect of 2. 2 eye, ears, arms, etc. 2 sexes. 2 magnetic poles. 2 setting in memory (on/off).

I chose the number2 (or it chose me) 30 years ago when my dad took me to a local race track to watch sprint car racing. I chose car number 2 as a favorite, and it won. It won every race that night, and it won every race I every watched it race in the years that followed.

Numbers are just numbers.
Like with letters, that obviously form into words and so forth, it is what you do with them that makes them powerful.

I believe it is possible for words to hold power as well as numbers.

But of course, the ability for numbers and words to have power falls on the person who believes in this power and allows it to manifist and drive and direct their observations and their decisions.

It is no different than religion faith. The power of faith comes from the person's belief in the faith, not from the faith itself.

There is no power in numbers themselves, but they may be given power by their use as symbols. Hebrew letters also represent numbers, and Hebrew words have a numerical value. This is of value to the Magickan, but otherwise is foolish to believe in such things.

I feel that the mythology of the sacred numbers stem from folklore alone...The superstitions passed down to us by our elders and their elders before them.

Whether these certain numbers, such as 13, 333, 666, 777, 642, so forth and so on can cause good luck or bad, doorways or window ways, would largely depend on the individuals perspective.

Some may think things to be coincidence, whilst others truly belief these beliefs to exist. All is within the eye of the beholder as always.

But, mathematics are the equation of the universe, I would not take such things for granted in the long run.

Nothing could exist without numbers. So I'd have to say, yes. There is numbers behind everything.
Whether or not you believe in supernatural and magical things determines whether or not you would believe in numbers having power.
I for one, believe that there has to be some form of structured logic behind everything, and what's more logical than numbers and mathematical equations?

(Also, I watched that movie "The Number 23" and upon finishing the movie I looked at the clock on the DVD player and it was 23:23. I dismissed that one, and so I watched "Back To The Future." The thing is, the movie was set in 1985...1+9+8+5 = 23! *gigglefit* Insignificant as this may be, it still made me laugh.)

Of course theres power in numbers, if you were for example mad as hell at a vampire and did something drastic and the whole coven came down on you, what will you do then, if you disrespect a member of the church of satan and they all took it as disrespect you might find yourself surrounded with demons you didn't know you had, so yes there is power in numbers.

You have the zodiacs, the mark of the beast 666, you have the 333, you have 21 for legal, the # of planets .. even the # of pillars at stonehedge ... I mean almost everything Asian is about Numbers, and history is about dates and Numbers etc..... it just is all around us and so some believe that there is power in Numbers.... there is power in anything you PUT POWER into or believe it to have .

I'm 100% with Remedy. Everything has numbers in it. Everything.

To say numbers are "just numbers" is a little silly. Numbers are everything and everywhere. Life IS numbers. So yes, numbers have power. Power beyond any person's knowledge.

That's what I think.

Well numbers are a part of our every day life. They can cause fear(666), and anger(gas prices) along with other emotions. But it's mainly what the numbers represent that invoke this fear.
I honestly don't know whether I think that they have power or not...

I know for some reason I hate the number 11. Who knows why. Maybe that says something.

Now that I have read more about how numbers are everywhere, I am starting to realize the they have a whole lot more power than I thought.

Just the power of numbers used for us to view and post to this thread.

Many of you might recognize the significance of these numbers:

1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1, 2, 4, 8, etc.

These numbers have been used to describe the power of the bits and bytes of data, memory, and storage of the all-powerful computer.

These are further used in the power of the language of 16-bit architechture using hexadecimal. The power of counting 16 numbers to get to 10:

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10

Or even deeper, binary:

There are only 10 kinds of people, those who understand binary, and those that don't...

Of course there is power in numbers. Just pay attention to the occult science of numerology, wich is understanding numbers and their complex meanings trough explanations supported by various mathematical calculations/derrivations, with wich one is understanding how everything has its own number, its own numerological vibration, whether it is a living being, or if we talk only about every piece of the environment it self. By calculating numbers trough numerology we are gaining deeper understanding about that environment and its living beings, thus gaining knowledge. Knowledge is power.

I personaly never had any lucky numbers, nor do I make my mind buissy with it, but if it has to be a lucky number of my choice than it would be number 10.

I believe that numbers have as much power as we allow them to have over us.

Look what the power of numbers has done. The World trade Center was attacked on 9 11 because of the power those numbers held over the people involved. It was a very significant date for them.

So, yes numbers can have power.

Numbers may power because individuals give that power to them. Numbers come into and out of favor and importance over time. Dog had some interesting thought on how various numbers have come into importance throught the use of technology.

The concept of kilo-byte, mega-byte, giga-byte didn't exist a hundred years agot, but yet we all use these numbers in our everyday lives.

I think that it is inevitable that certain numbers that are used so widely will end up having certain superstitions around them.

There is power in numbers like money for instance, the more numbers the more money right? And if 1 person signs a petition to stop animal cruelty they will think about passing the law less than if 1,000,000 people sign it. I believe 13 is a lucky number for me.

Numbers are empowering to cultures that have developed math for example but I feel they hold no power in themselves. Besides they are just agreed upon symbols to represent the mathematical figures of numbers. The number 9’ could have looked like the letter E’ had history played out a bit differently.

I see many people saying numbers only have powers because "that's what you believe" or "because you give them that power".

Well hey, isn't that how everything works? Don't we have to believe in everything for it to work? Don't we give power to everything?

Our minds are run by our thoughts and beliefs. The world spins on what we believe in.

So yes, of course numbers are powerful only because we make them that way, but we also make everything else powerful with our minds.

Numbers are building blocks of much of what we use on a daily basis, so in that they are powerful.

Ritually speaking, numbers again hold significance as they have been charged with power over the years. Whether this is ascribed to superstitious belief or actual reality is up to the individual.

it really depends on how powerfull you are, but numbers DO make a difference. wether its two, of twelve it can have a big impact. when i try to do my rain conjouring spell (as seen in my journal) by myself, i usually get some moist weather. but when i combine my powers with my bestfriends, her sisters, and her brothers, we make for a very powerfull combination. rain, wind, clouds, thunder, and lightning. possibly because we combine two water witches (me & my friend) with two air witches (her brother & sister). its really cool.

there is power where there is belief, i been doing numerology charts for the last 20 years. people are amazed at how signifigant the numbers are as we celebrate birthdays, maintain speed limits in our vehicles, dial phone numbers and so much more...numbers control us as we move thru time. belief is key

I think there's power in numbers. Such as, there's a group of fifteen people walking down the street. You wouldnt want to mess with that group, say if you only had three or four people with you.

Certain numbers being 'lucky', I dont think so, no.

For myself, I honestly do believe in the power in numbers. There are certain numbers that follow me around or they just happen to pop up when I least expect it. It may be just a coincidence but it's happened to me too many times to be considered just a mere coincidence. The numbers that seem to follow me are: 3, 7, 8, 10, 12, 24, and 27.
They are either by themselves or in combinations... mostly 3:33 or 7:33 or 10:24... You get the idea.
This is just me though, for all you know I could be crazy. :P

Power in Numbers is the highly acclaimed third album from the alternative hip-hop group Jurassic 5 (their second on a major label).

It picks up right where their last album, Quality Control left off, with a short trombone sample playing the same riff that the last song on Quality Control, Swing Set, ended with. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Power_in_Numbers

I think the only power in numbers really is that say with numerology they can logically map out how things could fall into place at certain times. Most things in the universe are mathmatical but I don't believe they have any supernatural powers attached to them.

From good ole Wikipedia - the short version:

Numerology is any of many systems, traditions or beliefs in a mystical or esoteric relationship between numbers and physical objects or living things.

Numerology and numerological divination were popular among early mathematicians, such as Pythagoras, but are no longer considered part of mathematics and are regarded as pseudomathematics by most modern scientists. This is similar to the historical development of astronomy out of astrology, and chemistry from alchemy.

Today, numerology is often associated with the occult, alongside astrology and similar divinatory arts. The term can also be used for those who, in the view of some observers, place excess faith in numerical patterns, even if those people don't practice traditional numerology. For example, in his 1997 book Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought, mathematician Underwood Dudley uses the term to discuss practitioners of the Elliott wave principle of stock market analysis.

History

Modern numerology often contains aspects of a variety of ancient cultures and teachers, including Babylonia, Pythagoras and his followers (Greece, 6th century B.C.), astrological philosophy from Hellenistic Alexandria, early Christian mysticism, the occultism of the early Gnostics, the Hebrew system of the Kabbalah, The Indian Vedas, the Chinese "Circle of the Dead", and the Egyptian "Book of the Master of the Secret House" (Ritual of the Dead).

Pythagoras and other philosophers of the time believed that because mathematical concepts were more "practical" (easier to regulate and classify) than physical ones, they had greater actuality.

St. Augustine of Hippo (A.D. 354–430) wrote " Numbers are the Universal language offered by the deity to humans as confirmation of the truth." Similar to Pythagoras, he too believed that everything had numerical relationships and it was up to the mind to seek and investigate the secrets of these relationships or have them revealed by divine grace.

In 325 A.D., following the First Council of Nicaea, departures from the beliefs of the state Church were classified as civil violations within the Roman Empire. Numerology had not found favor with the Christian authority of the day and was assigned to the field of unapproved beliefs along with astrology and other forms of divination and "magic."[citation needed] Through this religious purging, the spiritual significance assigned to the heretofore "sacred" numbers began to disappear. However numerology still is used at least in conservative Greek Orthodox circles. [1][2]

An example of the influence of numerology in English literature is Sir Thomas Browne's 1658 Discourse The Garden of Cyrus. In it the author illustrates that the number five and related Quincunx pattern throughout art, nature and mysticism.

Methods

Number definitions
There are no set definitions for the meaning of specific digits. Common examples include: [3]

0. Everything or absoluteness. All
1. Individual. Aggressor. Yang.
2. Balance. Union. Receptive. Yin.
3. Communication/interaction. Neutrality.
4. Creation.
5. Action. Restlessness.
6. Reaction/flux. Responsibility.
7. Thought/consciousness.
8. Power/sacrifice.
9. Completion.
10. Rebirth.

Digit summing

Numerologists often reduce a number or word by a process known as digit summing, then reach conclusions based on the single digit that is produced.

Digit summing, as the name implies, involves taking the sum of all of the digits in a number, and repeating the process as necessary until a single-digit answer is produced. For a word, the values corresponding to each letter's place in the alphabet (e.g., A=1, B=2, through Z=26) are summed.

Examples:

3,489 → 3 + 4 + 8 + 9 = 24 → 2 + 4 = 6
Hello → 8 + 5 + 12 + 12 + 15 = 52 → 5 + 2 = 7

Doesn't everyone have a 'lucky' number or group of numbers they always want to use for the lottery?

there is indeed power in numbers in everyway, be it people coming together for a cause, a certain number of candles needed for a spell to symbolise something like the 5 power bases, if someone has a so-called lucky number (mine being 1, 8 and 9) then those numbers have the power of will behind them, you want those numbers to do something and it acts as a focus...

i'm of like mind with Seraphina on this one
numbers do indeed have power
many spells require a certain specific number of an item. i believe the number can magnify the power of an item.
i hadn't before heard of lucky numbers being a focus, but that certainly makes sense, otherwise what good is a lucky number? :)
i'm interested in learning more about lucky numbers

I started that thread about a month ago about the power of the number 9. After much discussion I came to realize that there may be power in numbers if the one who believes it gives it that power. Therefore a symbol or number can have spiritual or whatever power if they want it to.

I think that numbers only have the power that people give them.

For example, one person who fears the number 666 as evil, to them that number has power, but to anyone else it's just another normal number. Same as the number 13, some people think that 13 is unlucky but I see it as just another number. However, I see the number 7 as lucky, I don't know why but I just do.

So I think that power in numbers is specific to the individual person and numbers only have power if the person allows them to.

I believe numbers are truly no more powerful than anything else. They can be used as a focus which means they can and sometimes do represent something else. I do believe in good luck and bad luck numbers but I do not consider the numbers to be the point in that, rather the situation or events and numbers just happen to be the 'reminder'.

I think there may be something even to the pattern of numbers we use daily. Phone number, SSN, IP addresses, zip code. They all have certain pattern that we leart to recognize readily, such as xxx-xxx-xxxx. Most would recognize that as a phone number. xxx-xx-xxxx would be an SSN.

The patterns of the numbers and the way we treat them affect our lives. Your phone number may be in the phone book, but not your cell phone number. It is more private. You don't give out your SSN to anyone anymore, but it once was on your driver's license.

We have given some numbers and number patterns great power over our lives.

The numbers of your name, birthdate and destiny can give you a lot of insight into yourself. And simply changing how your introduced or your nick name can make powerful changes in your life.
