Do you fully comprehend the mechanics of them? Or do you use them simply because someone says its works.
i will write my own, or at least analise them so i know just what i'm working on
When I first began (several years ago) I was a pretty much follow the instructions type spell caster but with time, experience and knowledge I sought, I now understand how it works *for me* and what I need to put into a spell.
I write my own, with my own good intentions. Also I put much concentration upon the words and believe what I ask for is already in the making.
It is like reading tarot, the small booklet enclosed is someone else's clarity of the cards. It is only a guideline to help you familiarize yourself.
Someone else's spells are their words, and I believe that your own words are more powerful, because it is coming from your heart the words you speak.
I like to take written spells and change them to suit my personal purposes... I subsitute herbs and write my own words. This will also help u to understand the mechanics of it. I'd NEVER cast a spell where I didn't understand what exactly (or how exactly) I was doing. Thats kinda like playn with fire, but when u first start out I guess sometimes thats what u have to do to learn. But its best to research why u are using the certain color candle, what this perticular herb is for, or why on a certain night or moon phase... That way u understand the mechanics of it and u become a wiser witch!
For me, breaking down the spells to their root elements. What functions are needed in any successful working, it really helped when i found tips in the Kaballa on effective prayers, modifying and studying the formulaic aspects to what a spell requires for either a gesture, a word, or even a well placed thought. Its been all about the mechanical structure, not just pretty poetry and what herb i favor over another because it smells better, but because the connection to the currents is maximized.
Ever wonder if while writing these spells and figuring their components, the spell would be cast already? As you think it?And that, the actual use or ritual is secondary?
Also, when you pick one,or,write one,to you take into account the symbolyou choose and it frequecy ...or the blending of symbols, which then becomes a harmonic? Or anyhting along that line?
again, only speaking from my own perspectives.
Thats exactly it. Writing out the prose, and connecting the dots in the cosmos allows for a few things to take place. That these energies do become incorperated into what im working.
Writing the form is part of it, preforming it a nother, and then the final acts of doing the things which will allow me to gain from the physical acts for the doing.
I use my own and some that people have told me to try that they work.
mainly trust in myself and my own ..
I haven't performed any spells, ever. Partially because I know I'm not even close to being ready. Mainly because I believe that spells are a way of gaining an 'upper hand' for lack of a better term, on events and situations when normally patience will bear fruit.
As they say "The Gods help those who Help Themselves."
How does it give one an upper hand SnowWalker?
Warriorinhell,I ask you..how do you go about putting your rituals together..what components to you look for?And more inmportantly why?
Certainly, you are not speaking solely about focus here.
I used to work at a Metaphysical store so I have several books of spells. When I find one that suits the ocassion I will try it. If it works I will put it into my book of shadows.
BloodThirsty..thats kool, but what Im really trying to find out is,not that if they work or not,but if anyone has taken the time to break it down to the point of mechanics.
Oh and please,PLEASE, if everyone would refrain from the "If you believe" comments ,because I happen to feel rather strongly about that, in that you dont have to believe it to work to make it so.This comming from experience, not just an opinion. So I really want to stear clear of that whole perspective, which has little merit in my book. And it is certainly not the sole reason these things would or wouldnt work.
Not even close.
ShadowDraven, when you ssay analize..would you mind elaborating on that just a bit please?
I do them my own way. It's all in the intention and keeping focused on what you're trying to accomplish.
See Tiger, thats where I disagree. But thats another story...
And by what you have said, doing it your own way, what is that really..do you ever look at the actual components of the "spell" you are putting together?I mean,do you understand your magic enough to where you know what about it makes this or that happen?
well I pick my *components* according to what the spell is being used for.... Like healing spells I choose the roots and even the color of the candle and also the type of incenses to burn, it is all about what you feel will be the stronger influence to make the spell be useful / working. just how I do it, there are a few spells in our Coven pages that is the Magick Hall / Page .
Thank Warrior..based on what you have said there,I have a question about that.
Is your "feel" based on intuition as to what will work best or more or less an educated guess?
I have more questions but need to figure how to word them..
Oceane it is alittle of both some I Know will work best and others I feel it will work best just by using common sense. My mom was full blooded Indian and so we learned alot about roots and stuff. herbs etc..
I do them my own way.. but I don't call a spell what I am doing.. anyways.. it takes alot of concentration and precission in what you are doing.. and it works:)
i have never actually used any spells but if i did i would think upon it first.i think it would be important to do so before hand and a grave mistake if you dont.
Just as KaddaveR said i can agree with. Reason i say this is because you don't need a book, words, a certain chant, or certain items to do what you are focusing on. I don't care who said you needed this or needed that. That's crap. That's someone saying ok you need to buy these items because it worked for them. That doesn't mean it will work for YOU. Technically some of us don't really NEED anything. Everything you use in a spell is just items to help one focus. Whether or not someone agrees with me or not doesn't really matter because if it works for me the way "I" do it, that's all that counts. If I perform something, I usually use NOTHING except my own mind and that's worked for me and hasn't failed me yet.
thank you TigerLilith.. but it depends of what spells you want to perform... there are different styles.. and if you are not initiated just like ... me... you start to do it your own way... and it's very good.. because you can and you know what you are doing.. othe people just need to follow some rules.. and if they understand what they are doing .. it is great:)
I do not use anything either TL,but there are many who do,and from what I see, it seems to me that they really dont have a grasp on any of the mechanics that would possibly make it work.
Do magical spells actually work? I do believe that if someone believes in something enough it makes it real. What do you think?
It is my humble belief that to perform any spells, rituals, invocations, bonding, ect. you must learn and prepare before performing this magic. It is unwise to perform them without protections and preparation.
Hmm,while I do dissagree with the belief part,I do think that if one is going to use stuff, they would need to prepare.
Doru,do you know the mechanics of each of the components you use,and their individual functions? How and why they would contribute to a given spell?
I mean ,have you ever really broken them down?
I study them fully before I make an attempt. I like to play it safe.
Kool..how deep do you go Jarak?
The three components for me,and they are ..Intent,will and release.
Thats it.
I dont understand why things have to be made so complicated. So when I see someone using external things,it makes me wonder what in those things used, make it supposedly work.beyond focus or belief.
Take a symbol..is it the recognition of frequency or current in that symbol that causes one to choose it?
I understand the mechanics of them...but know what they are because it DOES work...so it has been proven to work.
Oceanne,
The components of a spell are like the components of a conception of a child. The child is not conceived by a act of sexual intercourse in and of it's self. The two individuals have to meet, be attracted to each other, feel in the mood, ect... It is a series of acts that have to occur in order to create. That is why ceremonial majic takes years to understand and perform correctly to work.
Well there's a difference between psychodrama and actual invocation. Writing out elaborate spells that rhyme etc. are good for establishing focus, but they're completely unnecessary. The complicated rituals that use the energies of higher powers, etc. are designed because they are powerful invocations, and without a superhuman focus, such feats would be impossible without complicated ritual. Underneath it all, it's still all symbolic. Conceivably all one needs to do to enact change is to concentrate and make it happen. Of course, few if any have that sort of focus, power, and skill.
Thank you all for taking the time and thought to explain. It helps a great deal.
I would sure love to hear anymore about it if you think of anything please.
well, i would say that fairly, i really mnake sure that i understand the implications of all that i am doing when i manipulate energy to my intent.
Yes,but how do the things you use help you do that? And again, please lets leave the belief thing out for now tho ok?
I think initially one has to follow the insturctions step by step for spells and as you gain experience you can branch out and choose favorite tools and take poetic license. It is like cooking.
I don't preform spells but I do know a lot of people who do so I'm going to answer lol
Doing spells, magic or anything really doesn't take a deep understanding of it's true nature. We use the laws of physics every day but few know anything about them.
Since magic is the use of thought it would require little knowledge, determination perhaps but little else.
Of course the more understanding you have the easier and better things will work.
I always study the mechanics first of a spell I am shown. I study all the parts and what thier roll is in the spell. But I do not hold to these mechanics. I have always felt Magick. As the energy it is, thought is all that is needed. Tools and words are only focuses. Chants and symbols away of training the mind to operate. But I do not feel they are needed to understand the actual Magick. Once you understand the Magick itself, and where it comes from and how it binds everything together, then you will know the mechanics of life itself.
I usually write my own, if i take someone elses I will revamp it to meet my needs and make it my own, I dont know that i have ever done a spell just because someone said it works. if you dont make it your own they dont usually work, or not well at least.
tell me more about these mechanics you speak of. messaging me about it is much more favorable.
I will use what I think feels right for me from books I read and go from there to get what works best for me.
I have to agree withT rainDiskenth
I will do alot of reasearch on the spell or read about it myself...
I suppose if I ever were to perform a spell it would be a chant, from a spell book :)
Never take someone's word that it words. Just a wise thing to go by here. Unless you know it to be a time-tested and true working spell, you should never use it. It could be filled with bad intentions for the caster!! Always ask WHERE the source of the spell came from and find out if it is true or not before using. Or if more advanced, the best thing to do is just write your own spells.
I do not anything,as stated before, but when you say "write your own" please tell me what it is that compels you to write what you do.
I personally make up my own with some parts of other spells I have worked with before. Depends on what I am working with or for.
i only perform candle spells that i have the full knowlage of what i am doing i would never dabble in something i did not fully understand who knows what may happen
See cause in my mind, simply because one performs a spell, doesnt mean they have studied it...Do you study each component separately.then put them all together yourself? Depending on what individual thing does and the harmonic it creates when blended?
Or is it something else entirely?
Hmm fair enough..but in that,do you mean you round up whatever components the pretain to that? or resonate att he same emotional frequency? Do you understand what Im trying to get at here?
You going on gut feeling about a plant or a symbol when you use it?
i am still trying to learn the basics and pros and cons of them.
I believe people do them to appear powerful and mysterious to others and to scare them into not bullying the supposed "witch". Keeps people from giving you shit.
it's relatively easy.....you are giving power to something by putting your spiritual self into whatever it is you are using physically. Doesn't matter what it is. You can take a rock and give it power, or a feather, or a stick. If you really feel that those objects are going to solve whatever it is you're putting your mind to, then it becomes the tool of which you are trying to accomplish. One really doesn't have to THINK about what something will do. You are doing that all by yourself. If someone said, "ok this certain flower or this certain scent or herb has these properties..." are you type to automatically believe that, or are you the type to ASK why such person/s believes this stuff? Either you are the book type of "spell user" or you're the type that figures things out on your own. If i use anything...I don't sit and think about the mechanics of it. I use it because I put part of myself INTO it. Simple at that.
I didn't care if others said they worked or not, in fact the best ones are your own.
They always worked, mine and others' spells but for everything I got, something else was taken away.
It seems not even spells are free, at least in my case.
I have used text book spells( if that is the right phrase. But I have also figured out that the ones I write myself seem to have more power or meaning.
Thanks TL for that..I think understand now how it is for you.It isnt quite the same for me,and I dont think there are many who sit and think of the mechanics of a thing at the time..
But again,I just wonder why peeps use what they use.
I don't believe in using spells. I think every person needs to use a method that is personal and is created by them so their energies flow in the correct directions. Textbook spells are obnoxious and mind numbing.
I agree with you ..big time. And all this thought about thought..it just isnt that complicated. Not even close.
When you refer to currents..yeh;)
i always write my own spells. the only spell i ever used that wasent mine that worked, was the rain spell in my journal. when casting a spell you should always be sure of you intentions, and to never use it for negative purposes. if you must curse someone, do it with the utmost wisdom, care, and protection. you must remember to follow the rede "harm none, do what ye will". thats all i have to give.
i refuse to perform a spell unless i know the ins and outs of the procedure and the repercussions of it. it's one of the most important rules of wicca.
When and if I decide to use a spell, I always make sure of my intentions. I do proper research, to see if other people have tried something similar.
But just because a person say a spell works it does not have to be true, it depends on the person.
Some spells that have worked great for some might not work for me and the other way around.
When I perform my spells, I make sure that I am in balance and calm both physically and mentally.
Furthermore, I only cast spells when in real need, that is where I find they work best.
i would never do anything just because some said it works, people lie. i make sure i know exactly what im doing before i do it
To work a spell, you have to fully understand the mechanics, if you don't you run the risk of screwing the entire thing up. You also run the risk of endangering yourself and others because you don't know what you are doing.
I have spells where you have to change parts of it to make them your own, I also have spells that I have written myself.
queenmorbid. See that's the "negative vibes" that i was speaking about. If you actually believe that you MUST know the mechanics of things...and believe that you're going to screw it up then chances are because you have already "invited" that fear of failure, then chances are that's what's gonna happen.
No,see I dissagree TL.I think it depends on the person..and if a person uses stuff, then they need to know how and why it works.Every last bit of it.And honestly I dont feel one can write or build their own until they do know.
Just because someone knows or wants to know the mecahanics of something ,doesnt mean they invite failure.Thats like saying that every musician who reads music is going to make a mistake as opposed to the one who plays by ear..not so.
I believe if one is going to go around building these spells or what have you,you best know at least a little of what youre doing.Thing is ,I see so many claims yet I bet 99% have no clue as to why they use one component over another. They have no clue of the frequencies the desired component might put out or anything.. the chemical properties..
Nothing..not to put anyone down,Im just telling ya what I see.
And thats why the stuff doesnt work half the time.If you dont get that frequency down? Whether its in a spell or a thought? It aiiiint goonnaaa work.period.
Hey evilkitty, what are the types of candles and does it depend on colour and type of wax etc?...
Thanks everyone for your imput here btw.
For me when working with spells and what im going to use , i have to look at what the property of each item herb, symbol color day of the week and what moon phase we happen to be in at the time . Then after that I wil perfrom what it is i seek. As each comes together with each part.much like baking a cake if you don't have everything it will turn into something else.
Oceanne. It's ok if you disagree but why do you believe it depends on the person? I'm not sure what this is based on exactly.
you said: Just because someone knows or wants to know the mecahanics of something ,doesnt mean they invite failure.Thats like saying that every musician who reads music is going to make a mistake as opposed to the one who plays by ear..not so.
Those who go by a store and buys a "spell book" are the one's that either are curious about it, or they actually think they are going to benefit from it.
And i never said that if people wanted to know the mechanics of it invited failure. Those that start off with a doubt or negative vibe while performing a spell believing that if they dont get the mechanics of it "correctly" ARE in fact....inviting failure.
Being a musician learning by ear, and type musician using notes....isn't anything near what i'm talking about. That's more physical in nature, not spiritual.
Also wanted to add that you dont have to be an expert witch or whatever one wants to define themselves to actually perform or do a spell. As stated before, objects are just that. Tools that people use that they put their focus onto. I have done things myself without the help of anyone else and i'm sure there are others as well that can probably relate and worked just as well as anyone that uses items to focus their intentions.
That's like saying those that go to church are closer to God and those that don't go can't have a real spiritual connection to said 'entity'. And yes some people are like that in the world.
Telling someone that they CAN'T get a good outcome of their craft simply because they don't know the mechanics of it is also...wrong. Some of us don't NEED herbs, and candles, etc etc because we don't have to put our spirituality into anything to THINGS and half the time when I hear of people using Sage to bless their homes or to keep pesty spirits at bay, STILL have the same issues even AFTER using said herbs. Why? Because that person was TOLD to put belief into that said object. The person themselves has to have more faith in THEMSELVES. A true spiritual being KNOWS this and doesn't have to KNOW the mechanics of things because objects is RUBBISH.
If we look at the world and cultures that use items, it is mostly taught by those close to them because they were either taught that way or they figured it out on their own because it worked for THEM. Doesn't mean it will work for everyone. Objects and items are whatever you put your spirituality into.
I don't recall hearing stories of Jesus using items to heal the sick, or turn water into wine and such things. According to the stories...he used his hands and stated that all one needed was to BELIEVE.

**Yes..but has nothing to do with my question**

Heres the thing, thats a great post? But I dont want to knoanything other than what it is one looks at and considers when one wants to do a spell.I dont recal mentioning Jesus mentioning him to begin with.
lol ok since we want to play "bully" here...
AND you still didn't reply to my first question....
You said.."it depends on the person"
Why do you believe it depends on the person? I'm not sure what this is based on exactly.
I don't know where the sorcerery thing came from either
..I can go on for days about this one..and have. There is more than ample evidence that sound is indeed spiritual .**
Where is this evidence?
Not that i'm saying i disagree. Just curious about that statement. Also I would imagine that to be true since the mechanics of sound is used by our SPIRITUAL selves to create them.
Much like what i was talking about when it comes to OBJECTS people use to perform what people define as "spells"? Or perhaps this question is more for those that believe items give them more power when it's all just inside themselves. :)
I do not see anything wrong with figuring out the components or mechanics of spell. I personally myself do research before I do a spell, just to make sure that I dont do anything that will backfire on me.
What I don't get is why are some people getting so defensive?
I believe a spell is a basis for what you are trying to do. When doing a spell, you really must believe in what you are doing, or it simply won't work. You can make small changes as there is no rule which says to follow the spell exactly.
Dont know ,dont care why they get defensive, morbidcuriousity it will right itself..But Im interested in what you look for in lets say a symbol?
I have a list of herbs and what kind of spells they work best with and when is the best time of the day or whatnot to use that certain herb or do that spell.
Ohh Tiger Tiger, havent you gone into the archives ? I have been presenting evidence on that and other stuff since I could post..theres a ton of it out there.
How peeps choose to utilize it or not, makes no difference. So if you wanna see, just go back a ways..all kinds good stuff to toss around.
""I have a list of herbs and what kind of spells they work best with and when is the best time of the day or whatnot to use that certain herb or do that spell.""
**Ok kool..thank you.**
What is needed in my craft, and what is necsessary for the the complition of the project/ritual are two different things to me, If I want to start a fire I need to gather wood, I want a certain wood to have a certain type of fire, but finding fuel is only the step to crafting a fire..

Thank you LDR,the analogy is a good one.
I do not profess profound understanding on the subject. I do however know basic mechanical structures for some fairly odd stuff...so with that said this is what I have to add to this discussion.
Aside from people here who have voiced their opnions on
A) Belief
B) What they Read
Bb) What they read online
C) What someone else tells them
There is nothing useful for the conversation. There is no great criticism I have to offer other then its not worth my time to read.
No evidence has been supported one way or the other. Yes this is an open ended discussion but those who would know the answer to these questions need not to respond or even grace this discussion because there is a notion pearls before swine.
I dont care about swine, i dont like pork and wont eat it. Pearls are not much use either so its not one bit of difference.
There are 10,379 profiles on this site. And there have been a few people beating this idea of spells and mechanics to the death of some poor horse which never even saw the light of day before it made it to this glue factory.
Personally i feel this thread should have been closed ages ago, yet feel compelled to mention my disertation thus:
People when doing things of an esoteric nature need to be aware there is a science behind what your doing.
Any idiot can grill a steak and boil a potato....but it takes a chef to make a 8 course meal with shit no normal person can pronouce having brazened everything to perfection and have it just melt and to pair it with a wine which compliements it perfectly. Those people are the Chefs.
I am not yet a chef of the Arts if you will. I admit this and I want this known that so long as I or any one else on this spinning green ball will ever live, they will never be the Master Chef of the High Arts, or even the low art. This is because it changes its "frequencies " with every person it comes into contact with. Some can do it better then others, others cannot.
To tie into Kaddavers discussion on "Magic". His argument is that it should be banned from the forums for fear of giving away arcane secrets.
First off To those who study the arts, the arts no longer become arcane they become a daily experience. Yes it takes years and lifetimes to understand ones place and observe their currents which influence their lives to a degree of mastery, but that doesn't make them masters of everything in that art, it makes them a master of the self.
The study of the art is an inward reflection to make the inner worlds manifest outwardly. A dialog between man and the world, and the gods which he works with.
There is no one way better then other. However the systems of study and approach can be better then others.
Someone who has years of field experience and years of study will be able to create rituals and spells which draw more power out of the same materials some punk 16 yr old attempts to mix and duplicate the results.
Spells are your conversations with the outer world. Your will made manifest. There is a science to how to make this happen so that you are heard. The Jews have been using a method as spoken of in the Zohar which was written in the first century. The material is there if your willing to put in the time but most are lazy and will never get ahead.
For me, i work as hard as i want to to get to a place I think i would like to be. My ars magicka, and the stuff in the codex is a guide for those who would follow a less "fluff" approach and be made aware of the different interactions in the world view. It is a text book which breaks down to the mechanical aspects every form of magick, the next volumes will be indepth breakdowns of mechanical process such as resurrection techniques, death magick, exorcism, conjurations, and creation rites for various currents. These forces are very real, they are very harmful if applied with ignorance and haste. There is no compassion in nature, it simply is what it is.
There is no point in writing any more on this topic for me ...
At first when i was learning i did not use any spells foir if i dont know exsactly what do things can always happne now as i grew in my path i do use spells understnad the meaning and yes they do work
well i would not feel comfortable performing a spell if i just did it out of routine of what is needed rather than understanding as spells can be tricky and there is no room for making mistakes if you want them to work in the correct manner.
ahh spells! Are not the words or the objects... the most important is what you really wish.
