Growing up we've all had personal favorites in one genre or another (in regard to films). What would you say are your personal favorites when it comes to Science fiction films?
I hope this may also give members some ideas of what to search for when considering submitting to the Sci-Fi Section Database (whether it be films or books), when that section of the site has been completed.
Sci- Fi films...some of my all time favorites would be The Day The Earth Stood Still, Quatermass and the Pit, and the Alien series. That pretty much runs the gamut from past to closely present, with something unique and memorable from each film.
I personally have always had a soft spot for super hero type movies. This comes from my obsession with comics books at an early age. I also generally like anything that has a spooky supernatural feel to it. I appreciate a good scare now and again.
Oh yes Planet of the Apes..forgot that! The first one was classic..and the end shot absolutely turned my stomach over the first time I saw it. Brilliant!
My personal favorite for a Sci-Fi movies are: Dark Shadows, Dawn of the Living Dead, Frankenstein, Dracula, King Kong, Children of the Corn and a movie that I can't remeber the full name of it but it had to do with another childrens science fiction movie. If later I can remember it I will post it.
Mostly i read Sci Fi.. I would like to see some of Spider Robinsons Books go Film.. cats Cradle would make a good film as well, Ferinheight Four fifty two is good as well, as 1987.
Mine was Children of the Corn I've always loved that movie :)
Planet of the apes
Twilight zone
close encounters
ET
but u can never forget the classic The war of the worlds
omg I forgot ET I love ET I still cry when I watch it lol
Plan 9 From Outer Space-Directed, written, produced by Ed Wood
I really enjoy:
1984
Dune
Omega Man
Imposter
War of the Worlds
StarGate
All of the Star Trek Films
Enemy Mine
Serenity
Alien Nation
Explorers
Star Wars (4-6, though #3 was not too bad)
Cocoon
..just to name a few.
How can i forget star wars and star trek.
There also was a sitcom on my favorite martian
thats right I forgot about ET and what about the mvie series that was picture with a gave and one adult with 2 children that if they went outside they were afraid of the dragons?
I remember watching Star Wars and Star Trek with my dad as a kid and not knowing what was going on still don't to this day lol
LadyElectra...those are horror movies...not sci-fi movies.
I have always loved werewolf and vampire films.
Gingersnaps
near dark
lost boys
howling
american werewolf
I was always attracted to the ones about the end of the world, or the decay of society...they seem more realistic, and therefore, more scary:
Soylent Green
Planet of the Apes
The Omega Man
( HA HA - Charlton Heston movies)
Others, but my brain is tired
I almost forgot. I really like the back to the future series as well.
Personally I loved The Planet of the Apes and will never forget the first time I saw Star Wars on the big screen at the time I thought it was amazing and still fun to watch. I liked the first 2 Alien Movies as well.
2001 a space oddessy and 2010, the year we make contact. they blew my mind. Watch them, You have too!
I'm not really into scifi, but if I had to choose one film from the genre I'd say Cronenberg's The Fly.
I like all the Star Trek films and Starman was good too.
The Matrix had me confused for a while, but I got it eventually lol
50 foot woman, great film, a beautiful woman, just bigger
i luve blade runner and star wars(all of them well maybe except epiosde 1)
love star wars, alien movies, predator they quite alot :D
How could i forget Rocky Horror my favorite movie and also back to the future really good series of movies
I confess i'm not a major Sci-fi fan, but I've always had a fondness for the Star Wars films - the original 3 I mean. Pitch Black was pretty good too, and Independence Day - although that could also be classed as a disaster movie :-)
I think children of the corn is a good film
war of the worlds isnt bad ethier
Yes war of the worlds is really good, the original anyways. E.T was amazing. Also, Plan 9 from outer Space (noted as the worst film ever made, and believe me it is) is really worth a watch for camp value. You will laugh your ass of at that, lol.
Children of the Corn is a HORROR film...NOT a Sci-Fi film
Now Dreamcatcher is a Sci-fi film...more then a horror movie...because of the alien aspect.
Et Dark Angel Angel Buffy Blade movies Blade Runner Independance Day most Sci Fi movies some do go overboard and or a drag over the Queens Bday weekend I watch Rogue a great movie as or most Australian movies and American Gangster was was great to
queen of the damned, sin city, ginger snaps, the crow, they are the movies i love
I loved Dr Who and flash gordan also others
Like lost in space very cool old science fiction films
Does anyone get the concept of what a Sci-Fi movie is??
Ginger Snaps is a HORROR film...anything with a Vampire or Werewolves is HORROR!!!
Sci-Fi is aliens...space ships...outer space..Predator is Sci-Fi
Pitch Black is Sci-Fi ...The Fifth Element is Sci-Fi ....
wow, Logans Run was one of my all time favorites not to mention all the aliens movies,X-Files,etc there are alot of good ones out there as well as the Children of the corn I just watched that movie LOl
the terry pratchet are some pretty good Sci-Fi books, they pretty much touch base on a bit of everything. The tv series 4400 was pretty wicked too. (i know the thread doesn't mention tv shows but its worth mentioning)
well sorry to differ with you DW yet to me Children of the corn is Sci-Fi and can be found under Sci-Fi section as well.
I mean the theory behind the Children is based on a science test going wrong with them, I mean even if there were some unexplained things in the first the second one with kristie alley and Chrisopher Walker (before his accident) was based on science so it just depends on which one is being watched I just watched that one and it was a governmental experiment gone wrong... not to disrespect anyone.
You're talking about Village of the Damned ...the Kirstie Alley/Chris Reeve version is the re-make...and it is also considered Horror
Children of the Corn is the movie based on the Stephen King book
the faculty was pretty good jon stewart gets stabbed in the eye
The Faculity is a horror movie...but some mistake it for a sci-fi film...even though it is a rip off of Invasion of the Body Snatchers
I also liked Mars Attacks, K-Pax, and 12 Monkeys.
Mars attacks still cracks me up every time I see it. I also thought K-Pax was way underrated. Then again, I'm a pretty big Spacey fan.
Not critizing every post...just the ones where they post mis-information.
I have seen over 10,000 movies...I own over 1250 dvds...I study movies and the making of movies...the history of them etc.
i didn't mean any offnce.
war of the worlds was a good movie
I apologise I meant the village of the damned not the children of the corn, yet in the children of the corn they are also under a strange influence to me that is sci-fi .. LOL
Village of the Damned it is other worldly influence
so it could be Sci-Fi
but Children of the Corn it is demonic influence...so it would be more supernatural or horror
Damnation Alley , is probably a top one on my list, Or night of the comet, a classic.
Damnation Alley...gotta love the giant cock roaches that eat people
I'm totally dug Star Wars and I love watching the Battlestar Galactica series on the sci-fi network!!
Village of the Damned wa based on the Midwich cuckoos by John wyndham, and is actually about aliens - so it is sci-fi
yep I love the Village of the Damn, yet I feel children of the corn could be Sci - fi I mean i consider supernatural to be of the science nature .. I love the star wars and star trek shows / movies...
I'd have to say as a child, The Never Ending Story and as what it said about me, I had a very active imagination and so i could realy relate.
i once had a cat who just loved "The Thing" (the john carpenter version). she loved the bit at the beginning where the husky is chased by the helecopter.
I love Sci-Fi, but judge good Sci-Fi on what message can be brought out the work to our current times, not really on effects or action.
Here is my list:
2001: A Space Odyssey
Blade Runner
Serenity
Dune
Star Trek VI
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Soylent Green
Omega Man
Roller Ball (1975)
There was a run of thoughtful Sci-Fi from the late 1960s through the mid-70s.
The predator movies. All star treks .Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick.
Aside from the big ones like Star Wars and such I really liked Event Horizon. Its a nice combination of horror and sci fi that is hard to pull off.
oh well when i was young was in the star wars days oh and can never forget seeing ET in the theatre for the first time. But as I got older i loved the star trek movies and the sci fi channel.
Ooh, Solar Babies was another one I used to love, but I haven't seen that in years. Not met anyone else who's heard of it either.
And Tank Girl - the best ever!
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes- a true science fiction classic, as well a having some horror in it
That reminds me, There is also Killer Klowns from Outer Space. I havent thought about that in years but I may try to find a copy haha.
I just remember another good one, what about The Planet of the Apes, the old version not the new one that came out either
Star Wars is not nerdy, I myself like those types of movies like Star Trek and I am sure others might agree
1.planets of the aps
2.star trak
3.star wars
4.big foot
5.swamp thing
5.x files
6.the blob.
Star trek movies were goooood and so was galaxy quest.. it was corny but goood.
Solar Babies...roller blading in the future...Adrian Pasdar and Jamie Gertz...ball of light...yeah I seen it afew times.
Whoa dude...I had totally forgotten about Killer Klowns from Outer Space!!
*cranking up the ebay*
Killer Clowns was funnier than hell...and I hate clowns.
I like all Science-Fiction movies that have a good plot or are based on a good book... Right now my favorite series are the Stargate Atlantis series...
I like the movies that show what could happen now or in the near future...
But I also like the ones with a good space battle...
I've always been partial to Star Trek, Star Wars, and time travel movies.
Wow, a lot of good suggestions have been posted, as well as a lot of repeats (and random BS posts).
I personally grew up with the Star Trek series, then later with the Star Wars films that emerged in the late 70's, and the Stargate films...
As for Sci-FI fils I would have to say that close encounter of the 3rd kind has always been one of my favorites and I have seen it a dozen times. I sued to love watched The cat from outerspace and escape from witch mountain, return to witch mountain which are now classics that my kids watch.

Lots and lots of great choices. Day the Earth Stood still, Metropolis, Island of Dr. Moreau, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Blade Runner, Silent Running, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Starship Troopers, Invaders from Mars, Alien in all its forms and many others. Note that some of these titles are way more science fantasy than true science fiction and that difference is make or break for true science buffs.
Growing up in the 70s here are some of my favorite pre-Star Wars SF movies in no particular order:
Things To Come - 1936
Tarantula - 1955
War of the Worlds - 1954
The Time Machine - 1960
Forbidden Planet - 1957
Quatermass & the Pit - 1967
Silent Running - 1971
2001: A Space Odyssey - 1968
When Worlds Collide - 1952
This Island Earth - 1955
The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms - 1953
Them! - 1954
The Incredible Shrinking Man - 1957
Planet of the Apes - 1968
Westworld - 1973
Logan's Run - 1976
(these two are where Alien came from)
It! The Terror From Beyond Space - 1958
Planet of the Vampires - 1965
I'm sorry, but the best Sci-Fi would be
STAR TREK, hands down. Then STAR WARS.
To not forget GODZILLA.
