I read a book where gypsies used urine to wash there hair as a means to make it grow. I also seen a movie where people would drop their pants and make urine as a means to keep evil spirits away... quite frankly i have never heard of these types of rituals before this and would like to know... what significant role urine is used in magick if any?

This isn't as bizarre as it may first seem. Urine has a long and well documented role in magic and ritual ceremony. The information is easy to obtain and read about. A number of people, including former prime ministers have admitted to drinking small amounts of their own urine for various health reasons. (usually for men its because urine contains small amounts of androgen and is thought to increase virility) Midwives up to and through the 19th century used urine to assist in childbirth because of the disinfectant properties of ammonia, etc. and so on. I'm interested to see where this stream of ideas will go...

It does seem strange at first thought. But isnt urinating a form of releasing impurities? Then wouldnt urine have a somewhat purifying quality...or maybe a way to ward away impurities....just as wearing male pheramones keeps males spiders from you.

it does sound strange at first yet as was said urine has been used for disinfecting ans sterilizing over the centuries. It is said it kills all germs and any impurities that may be in or on the body. I know women whom wash thier faces with it before actually using a cleanser... and they have very beautiful skin.... the amoninia (SP) and acid in it actually peels off the dead skin cells naturally and gives the skin a new glow.. LOL it is true.

I am also interested in where this thread will go.

It is a proven fact that urine is actually sanitary enough to drink. This helps to replenish all vitamins lost in the process of urination. There are other things too. Just wanted to point one things out for now.

I personally think that is friggin insane and those who drink it too....

What would drive you to test that theory? How can you repeatedly drink it? I can't stand the smell.

To each their own.

I know that you can drink your own urine at twice in the same day before you start to feel really sick. I also learned in my history class that the Romans used to drink it as it way to stay healthy. It also keeps your teeth clean. When toothpaste was orginially made, it was made with urine in it. *shrugs* It's a bit nasty what with all the chemicals that your body is getting rid of with it but at the same time, it does have some healthy benefits to it too.

In africa they drinks eachother's urine and eat their crap. and also use the ashes of humans as food as well. nothing goes to waste there i guess x_X

Spell bottles, also known as "Witches Bottles", have been in use in England and the United States since at least the 1600's. Spell bottles were originally created to destroy the power of an evil magician or witch thought to have cast a spell against the bottle's creator. They were often ceramic vessels, filled with hair, nails, and even the victim's urine. They were also walled up into new homes as magical guardians. Spell bottles of this type continued to be used well into the 19th century.

Best I can tell ya is that the ammonia in urine does act as an antibacterial agent -- sometimes turned to in emergencies (like when there is no more ointment, etc LOL) it does help prevent infection.

Ive never heard of any rituals involving urine...

Urine goes through the filters of the body making it , strange as it sounds, sanitary. It's also good to urine on a piece a cloth and breath through it, should there ever be a terrorist attack involving gases. For spiritual purposes, that wouldn't surprise me considering everything else that's used or can be used. Even paint thinner was first created to ward off evil spirits. Why not Urine? *shrugs*

Urine was used by the Romans to clean their little white toga's.

I have heard that urinating on a would helps heal it faster and keep it clean.

I know there is a spell for warding off attacks from witches. You get a jar fill it with as many sharp objects as possible then fill it with your urine and then bury it somewhere away from your property. It returns any nasty spells directed back to the weaver.

I know there are personal spells where you use your own urine, mostly for protection spells. I figure this is because like blood, hair or nail clippings it is a by product of your body and there for carries your essence.

I do believe the Roman's used urine to bleach their togas.

I have heard of urine being used in some warrior tribes as a sort of hallucinogen, but nothing else so contemporary.

In the tribes, the warriors would drink their own, others, or reindeer urine and evidently become under the impression that it banished pain, caused a feeling of supernatural strength and invincibility, and gave access to psychic powers.

Ewwwww

I've also heard from a friend that has a certain piercing that your urine is good for...sterilizing. I'm not sure if this means that one person's urine is good for another person, or if only your urine is good for you. lol I'm not all that smart when it comes to pee. :)

I can't stop laughing with this thread -- I keep imagining me in these different scenarios and having my survival depend on my pee! Imagine: a handkerchief full of piss being smooshed to your face in order to protect your from nerve gas? Or, having your mate squat (this a a female) and pee on a bad cut. Better yet! Having an interview in Japan and, for the sake of my insanity, they have you drink a cup of your pee as part of a medical exam!

Ohhhh, *grabbing sides* this is just too good! Please *insert higher power here* never let this thread end LOL!

For example:

URINE
In European -- especially Italian -- folk magic, as well as in hoodoo, urine is used in women's coffee and tea love spells, as a quick substitute for menstrual blood, when the intention is to tie or bind a lover. This is particularly common among girls to young or women too old to have menstrual periods, and among pregnant women and those who for any other reason don;t menstruate. Men also can put urine in a drink to tie a woman, although this is not mentioned so commonly.

In hoodoo, and in polite Southern speech generally, urine is often called "chamber lye" or "water." No matter what you call it, one of the oldest root work traditions is for a male gambler to have a female lover urinate on his mojo bag or lucky hand while he is at play. If the gambler and his partner can retire to an alley to perform the act while the game is in progress, so much the better. This is called "feeding the mojo," and the use of the word "feed" is, of course an indicative link to African magico-religious thought, from whence this custom derives. (Lodestones are also "fed" in hoodoo -- with magnetic sand.) Women players rarely ask a man to urinate on their mojo hands, so, for whatever reason, it is female urine that is considered lucky in this case.

Chamber lye can be a vulnerable spot in a man or woman's periphery. An enemy who gets your "water" can cause grave damage to you by stopping it up in a bottle with red pepper and Graveyard Dirt. The result will be urinary tract problems, ranging from cystitis and nephritis to prostatitis and kidney stones. The only way to take off such a condition is to find the bottle and destroy it, letting the urine run out into a fire.

Conversely, chamber lye has its strengths -- a man can use his own urination to cure a case of impotence that was put on him through magic. Peeing on a knife blade and letting the pee run on the ground is one of many methods for accomplishing this. Another is to urinate into a red ants nest. Women who have had their natures hoodooed can pee into a running river as they call on the river to take off the jinx.

I should also add a quick comment on the term "chamber lye" for readers who are not native English speakers:

Chamber: A chamber means a room, so in the old days a bedroom was called a bed chamber. With no indoor plumbing, you went outdoors to pee in an outhouse, but the first pee of the morning, before dressing or washing up, most folks didn't want to go out, so they peed in a covered container called a chamber pot, which was carried out later.

Lye: This is an old Anglo Saxon word meaning any strong alkaline liquid. Most of the time nowadays you'll hear the word lye in reference to making soap at home, where one good source of lye is potash -- literally pot ashes. You make potash or pot ash lye by concentrating water that has run through the ashes collected from the fire under your cooking pots. Since there is no one chemical formula for lye; in common parlance it can be any really strong alkaline solution. So a polite word for urine used to be "chamber lye" -- an alkaline solution obtained in the bed chamber.

So... "chamber pot" plus "pot ash lye" equals "chamber pot lye" -- which is shortened to "chamber lye"!

I would think that it is all just a joke but I saw for a fact some, in documentary or while traveling.

Indeed the human are the most illogical being.

I even saw here some doctors recommend to drink it.

They claimed we have to cause lots of our good vitamins and nutriments gets eliminated in our urine before the body takes what it needs.

Well I must say that I really didn't expect to come across a thread like this!
Interesting topic.

You can survive by drinking just your own urine in an extreme situation (for example if you were stuck somewhere without water for an extended period of time).

As far as magic is concerned, however, I have no idea. As has been said already, I would presume it to be related to the fact that urine can be used to disinfect etc.

I have heard of this, here in California we already have clinics that have adopted this, along with enema theraphy.

http://www.vanderbilt.edu/AnS/psychology/health_psychology/Urine_Therapy.htm

I would like to think there is some clinical method to best do this. I do know that urinating on a jelly fish sting is a wives tale. That urinating on the feet(already mentioned) hinders the spread of foot fungus, and that urinating on a person that was poisoned by a Tree Frog will reduce the poisons effect.

Depends on where the PHd came from... But, to play devil's advocate (as I must), there are medical procedures from the East that were originally thought "quacky". Acupuncture was certainly one of them... And people who were into yoga a few years ago were looked ten shades of funny.

back to urine...

This is from when I was a child -- I remember my cousin had a bad ear infection and my uncle insisted on pouring hot urine in her ear. I don't remember whether or not she let him go through with it. Still, I find it funny as hell now as I did then.

Survival

It has been suggested that when a person is in desert survival or surrounded by salt water and devoid of drinking water that the person must resort to drinking his/her own urine if it is the only liquid available.[5] As it tends to cause further dehydration due to the salts in it, drinking urine for survival is advised against by the US Army Field Manual[6], the head of the Texas Urological Society[7], and numerous survival instructors and guides[8][9][10][11][12][13], while the Discovery Channel advises it.

Aron Ralston claims to have used the technique when trapped for several days with his arm under a boulder.

Bear Grylls of the Discovery Channel's Man vs. Wild drank his own urine while he was in the Outback of Australia.

Alternatively Les Stroud on Survivorman drank water evaporated from urine that he produced using a solar still but advised against drinking pure urine.

As a human being can only survive without water for about three days, drinking urine probably would extend life for only one to two extra days. However, these two extra days might mean death or life under extreme conditions. Several people saved themselves by drinking their own urine during the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.

1. In primitive myths, urine, semen and blood (particularly menstrual blood) had magical properties (sometimes you gotta work with what you have handy). Let's face it, they believed everything natural was also magical.

2. My mom patted her face with my newborn sister's nappies claiming that it "refined" the skin. She said you could only do this up to the time the infant began to eat meat, and then the urine was no longer as good (also about the time it develops what our society conceives of as an unpleasant odor). Mom had great skin.

3. I've had enuf requests for my urine from private parties that I've considered bottling it.

Health issues
Urophagia is generally considered harmless, since the urine of healthy individuals is mostly sterile. However, a small risk exists if there is a disease present, or bacterial infection of the urethra. There may also be secondary effects, such as skin rashes in individuals sensitive to urine. [1]

The main dangers are the high salt and mineral content. The high salt content usually does not pose a problem if the urine is sufficiently diluted and not consumed in mass quantities. The effect of the high salt may be mitigated by drinking some water after consuming urine. The urine may be diluted if the person whose urine will be consumed drinks some water (or diet soda, see below) an hour or so before the act. Many people into BDSM drink beer before the act[citation needed] because it dilutes any unpleasant chemicals in the urine, and alcohol acts as a diuretic, stimulating the body to excrete more urine than it normally would.[2]

Since artificial sweeteners are excreted in urine, consuming artificial sweetener before urine play can lend a sweet taste to the urine. Drinking diet soda, or other beverages containing artificial sweetener, before urine play will have the dual effect of diluting the urine and sweetening it. However, if the taste of sugar is detected in an individual's urine, and it is known that artificial sweetener has not been consumed, this may be a sign of diabetes and a doctor should be consulted. Asparagus, on the other hand, gives urine an unpleasant smell with about 40–79% of people.[3]

The participants should use caution or avoid drinking urine if one or both of them are taking vitamin or mineral supplements or medication, since elements of these can be excreted in urine.[4]

Urine of persons who are ill, or regularly take medication, should generally not be consumed. In special cases (e.g. chronic illness of the partner), a medical doctor should be consulted to clarify whether the urine of the chronically ill or medicated person may be consumed without endangering one's health, or not.[citation needed]

If put through a house hold water filter, the urine will become odorless and taste much like water.[citation needed]

[edit] Survival
It has been suggested that when a person is in desert survival or surrounded by salt water and devoid of drinking water that the person must resort to drinking his/her own urine if it is the only liquid available.[5] As it tends to cause further dehydration due to the salts in it, drinking urine for survival is advised against by the US Army Field Manual[6], the head of the Texas Urological Society[7], and numerous survival instructors and guides[8][9][10][11][12][13], while the Discovery Channel advises it.[14]

However, these two extra days might mean death or life under extreme conditions. Several people saved themselves by drinking their own urine during the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake.[citation needed]

[edit] Alternative medicine/Practices
Main article: Urine therapy
In countries such as India and China, it is considered normal by some groups to drink your own urine for health and cosmetic purposes. This health branch of drinking urine is considered to be labeled as Urine therapy. Also, an old method of teeth-whitening during the Renaissance involved the consumption of urine, though it needn't be, and wasn't always necessarily, that of the user.[citation needed]

[edit] Teeth whitening
In Roman times, there was a tradition among the Gauls to use urine to whiten teeth. A famous poem by the Roman poet Catullus, criticizing a Gaul named Egnatius, reads:

Egnatius, because he has snow-white teeth, smiles all the time. If you’re a defendant in court, when the counsel draws tears, he smiles: if you’re in grief at the pyre of pious sons, the lone lorn mother weeping, he smiles. Whatever it is, wherever it is, whatever he’s doing, he smiles: he’s got a disease, neither polite, I would say, nor charming. So a reminder to you, from me, good Egnatius. If you were a Sabine or Tiburtine or a fat Umbrian, or plump Etruscan, or dark toothy Lanuvian, or from north of the Po, and I’ll mention my own Veronese too, or whoever else clean their teeth religiously, I’d still not want you to smile all the time: there’s nothing more foolish than foolishly smiling. Now you’re Spanish: in the country of Spain what each man pisses, he’s used to brushing his teeth and red gums with, every morning, so the fact that your teeth are so polished just shows you’re the more full of piss. [17][18]

[edit] Ceremonial
Please help improve this section by expanding it. Further information might be found on the talk page or at requests for expansion. (May 2008)

The Koryak people of Siberia drink urine in conjunction with their ceremonial use of the psychoactive Amanita muscaria (commonly known as fly agaric) mushroom. The active alkaloids are unchanged as they pass through the human body, allowing the urine to retain the intoxicating effects of the mushroom.

Looks like the jury's out on surviving on your own urine, but that Catallus can sure turn a phrase. He makes Egnatius' urine-brightened smile sound loathsome and false.

Wow so much information on this whole Urine thing,
but one thing I noted that was not mentiond as I sat and read the whole thread getting ready to vomit.
That the pioneers comeing in over donnors pass and other plains urinated on their hands and rubbed it on their faces and arms to prevent chapping,And sever wind burn threw the mt passes.
This Might be a myth concerdering none of the pioneers are no longer living and since it was my great great grandma who was from Italy who told me this story.I did some question asking and the grandpas of 80 years said they wouldn't doubt It..I am not reasearching it...

I learned it is (if it is to be a beverage) best to catch the mid stream not the first moment or last bit. stagnant urine is never safe.

It is possible to process urine in a evoparation funnel as well. Animals use a scent propelled in urine.. humans could have learned such behavior from watching the animals.

Wikipedia had this to say:

Urine therapy refers to one of several uses of urine to prevent or cure sickness, to enhance beauty, or to cleanse one's bowels. Most devotees drink the midstream of their morning urine. Some prefer it straight and steaming hot; others mix it with juice or serve it over fruit. Some prefer a couple of urine drops mixed with a tablespoon of water applied sublingually several times a day. Some wash themselves in their own golden fluid to improve their skin quality. Many modern Japanese women are said to engage in urine bathing. The truly daring use their own urine as an enema. Urine is not quite the breakfast of champions, but it is the elixir of choice of a number of holy men in India where drinking urine has been practiced for thousands of years. The drink is also the preferred pick-me-up for a growing number of naturopaths and other advocates of "nature cures." The main attractions of this ultimate home brew are its cost, availability and portability.

Urine may contain proteins or other substances that are useful for medical therapy. Urine from postmenopausal women is rich in gonadotropins that can yield follicle stimulating hormone and luteinizing hormone for fertility therapy. The first such commercial product was Pergonal. Urine from pregnant women contains enough human chorionic gonadotropins for commercial extraction and purification to produce hCG medication. Pregnant mare urine is the source of estrogens, namely Premarin.

Shipwrecked or people otherwise adrift at sea for long periods often resort to drinking their urine when no rainwater is available, seawater being unsuitable. People stranded in deserts often also drank urine to prevent life-threatening dehydration from setting in. However, this desperate measure achieves little to delay death from thirst as urine dehydrates one in the same manner saltwater does.

During World War I, the Germans experimented with numerous poisonous gases for use during war. After the first German chlorine gas attacks, Allied troops were supplied with masks of cotton pads that had been soaked in urine. It was believed that the ammonia in the pad neutralized the chlorine. These pads were held over the face until the soldiers could escape from the poisonous fumes, although it is now known that chlorine gas reacts with urine to produce toxic fumes (see chlorine and Use of poison gas in World War I).

Urine has also been historically used as an antiseptic. In times of war, when other antiseptics were unavailable, urine, the darker the better, was utilized on open wounds as an antibacterial.

Urban myth states that urine works well against jellyfish stings, although in reality it is at best ineffective and in some cases may actually make the injury worse.
