The other day I was talking to a friend about art. She was curious about how people get so emotional over it and since I'm one of those emotional people, ha, she asked me about it.
[She's a more practical person. She finds beauty in fact.]
So, we got to talking and what started out as a playful conversation ended on a more serious note.
She got creative at the end and said:
"Well, if art comes from the heart, soul, and mind all together- where did those images born at originally? Was it a past memory? Was it a imaginary daydream? Was it forgotten dream itself?"

I couldn't answer her right then because I had never thought of it that way. Now, I want to know other's people opinions on this topic. What do you think about that statement?
If anything- maybe I'll get an answer to tell her. haha.

I think they come from the heart and soul mainly pic of the mind which we create as fantasy, what we are inspired or dreams of the past. it is us and how we feel. our life dreams or tragidies put together in a poem or art.

Art comes within there is no right or wrong answer, a line of words or line is considered art, yet we aspire for what we believe and feeel for the best art is what comes within.

I would think that a painting comes from within the person all parts of them , memories, thoughts, heart and soul, I mean look at art from different artist and scultures they are usually what the person *gives from within themselves and puts it into the art they make, so to me it is all Aspects of an artist that help them create their works of art.

just an opinion is all.

people that are artist are very complex people and they take from everything around them and within them I fell to make a masterpiece, whether it be good or bad, they pull from within and also from what they see and hear all around them and use it in the energy of their work.

Also I feel a person whom paints has to have alot of self control and self preservation to a certain degree, may not just how I think is all.

Anything I've ever written has either come from experience or my totally twisted mind (dreams, nightmares, pleasant/unpleasant thoughts, feelings...)
Anything I have every drawn was entirely from my imagination. of course, not including practice drawing where I am usually copying a style of drawing.

I look at art this way. You can give a group of people the same thing to paint and each will have their own interpretation of it. It's not necessarily the scene, object or person in the painting, but the emotion within, overall style and life experiences of the artist that makes each painting their own. What can make the viewing experience of a painting emotional, whether happiness, sadness or other, is when they can identify with what the artist is expressing though the painting.

This is one of my favourite quotes:

"Every artist dips his brush in his own soul and paints his own nature into his pictures."
-- Henry Ward Beecher--

I do agree with you, any answer is the right answer in this case.

Mostly art of any form comes from the imagination and the soul. It can be coloured in many ways emotional, mental etc.

However there are some that paint images they had seen or experienced in a past life. Scenes and places they have never been in this life but come to life on a canvas or in written form, even in a song.

Art is an expression of many forms and comes from so many areas, it is a complex question to answer.

I think its posssible for art to be a forgotten dream. In our dreams we usualy tend to be very creative. The laws that bound us to our earthly form dont apply in a state of dream.Surrealism the painting The Presistance of Memory and all the melting clocks. It was just like a dream played out.

I think it varies from artist to artist.
Some might have had dreams and saw what they wanted to paint; others might have had the idea for the art inside themself all along and just did not have the means to do their art.
One never knows i guess.

I'd like to think that all art - painting, sculpture, music, etc - evokes an emotion within all of us to some degree. It makes us human; itt makes us feel...can you imagine how empty we would be without it?
Your question reminded me of an animated commercial I use to see on TV as a kid - it showed a guy in a home full of artistic stuff; one by one, those things disappeared until he was left in a cold empty place. It actually creeped me out.
( I think it was a commercial advocating the need for the gov't to continue to fund stuff like the Nat'l Endowment for the Arts).

It takes more than one thing to make a person (heart, mind, soul, memories, genetic disposition ect). With that in mind it is logical to think that since a person creates a work of art, then it would be a peice of all of those aspects of that person combined. So I say all of the above.

I think art is like a mix. Like a drink.
The artist ads an amount of inspiratin that he or she has gotten from the real world. If its a direct painting of a person or building its 100% inspiration. Then it can go down to less then 1 % inspiration, the rest is just a mix of the artists dreams, soul, thoughts, feelings, whatever comes up.

Reading this thread again i started wondering do people consider the statues in churches as forms of art? I mean they are painted imagess as well so to speak; I had one friend who expressed that they thought they were things of beauty to look upon and in that way an art form so i wondered if others see the painted images in churches as art.

Art it`s the most supreme expression of human spirit.
It is the essence of all the outer and inner interactions and more.
The genetic inheritance is present there too and it`s very important.
We do not create just what we see, percieve, but also what we really are or supposed to be.

But all that must be passed through feelings when we create and feelings without imaginations are impossible to exist.
All that stays under the empire of the value system we built in our minds and enforced with technical abilities and exercised skills...
but in the end all is emotional, imaginative, mental...
in this order...
and if you recognize the existence of spirit...
it`s "angelic" inspired.

Once "emotions" or "soul" are enter into the discussion people get excited because they think those aspects of themselves are exalted.

What about an historic perspective on art?

What's curious to me is why people originally (as in the earliest discovered art, and the religious stuff in museums) painted two-dimensional images, even though they lived in a multidimensional world?

Did they just not know how? Hadn't thought of it?

Then when a style appears, everyone copies it. Not sure about their soul when they're replicating style.

That is difficult to say exactly, as everyone is different.

A human is so complex which is why we have so many mysteries surrounding the soul. Can you see it? No, but somehow humans believe it exists.

Because we can't get to the bottom of ourselves its hard to say where art originated. There are millions of artists and quite a few of them are inspired by dreams. Some of them could be inspired from an imprint on the soul from past lives. I've simply learned not to rule anything out. The possibilities are endless just as humans have no limits to how much they can grow.

Perhaps artist have messages they need to tell the world or perhaps their soul is telling them something and our minds are putting it into an image we can bes understand it.

I have only two pieces of art in my portfolio, and honestly, they are really not from my soul nor from my heart. They were characters thought up for an RP site. But, those characters evolved in my mind, became beings, and after writing their stories, they were bursting to emerge, to be "seen" as it were. I have been in art classes and felt "forced" to do pieces and honestly you can tell when I have done things without much thought to them. They are just pen and ink scratches on a piece of paper that are recognizable as something, but they are just there. I honestly don't think my soul and my heart goes into every drawing, but life experiences and things I find beautiful do. It's just a part of my heart, or a part of my soul.

Neolithic images had to do with what they wanted, what they valued, what they found pretty --- meat, but not just hamburger on the hoof, but leaping animals, mating animals, people leaping over animals, and human handprints since they didn'thave an alphabet. This is important since it's not one dimentionsal.

so it's all wish fulfillment and a certain anima which is really prayer, but with some individuality evidenced by the handprints and Joy, Joy, Joy! in the magic of image. Yes, their emotion, but having to do with survival, not with some abstract having to do with fame, or uniqueness which is all posturing, but realization of being in the rihgt place at the rihgt time communicating with the ages about what is important.

Art is relative, what one person thinks is beautiful, someone else may find repulsive. Its all in the eye of whom is interpreting it.

In all of my drawings, the technical aspects (color, value, line, shape, etc. ) come from the mind, but the driving force and the thing that really polishes them is the emotion behind them.

Art is the words that we lack.
Whether it is a painted picture, a symphony, whatever, I believe that it's the soul. It's like love. How do you define love? You can try, but nothing can even come close to it...
Just like you can't describe hatred. You might be able to give a vague outline but...you can paint it. You can play it on an instrument.

Art is like a language made up of adjectives. It explains.

I think art and self expression come from the subconscious. As well it is said that creativity comes from the right side of the brain, which is where scientists believe your subconscious is located. So in a way I think it is your subconscious expressing itself and just like dreams trying to help you solve any problems you may be experiencing. For instance I know with myself things that I am going through are expressed in my art, as well I notice that the images in my art and in my dreams are relatively the same or atleast alike in some way. So I think art in all its forms is a way for people to understand themselves better.

I would have to say all art comes from inspiration. The artist is either inspired to share beauty, frustration, or anguish. But all ideas I would have to say are inspired by something.

I think art simply comes from the creative mind. Recollection of past images possibly, replication of images..or just an idea or feeling that one wants to emit on canvas.

I believe that the right brain is responsible for an artist's work.

We create what we like to see, simple as that. Or rather, copy and put together. Think about it. No one can really create an image and so it's never been done. If you look at anything, you can automatically think of at least one other thing that it looks like. People take images from everyday life and put them together to make something that looks new but isn't. We put them together in a form that is more beautiful to us.

Hmm.. i don't know about past lives, but i think the expression of art comes purely from the mind and soul. I'm always amazed at how someone's hands can reveal what they see in their imagination. It's a talent I don't have.

Art comes from the soul of the artist. I don't believe that it has anything to do with past lives, or forgotten dreams or anything of that sort. I know that my art (the written word) certainly can't come from a past life, as much of it deals with purely fictional things.

I was reading a book I found at one of the random places I lived in and it was describing how the subconscious affects people differently. Like it's one collective mind. It described how artists are more attuned to it than most.

Whenever I create art, I first think of how I feel. My art tends to be darker when I'm in the darker moods, and brighter when I'm on the brighter side of the feeling scale. Then I dig a little deeper, and try to think of something that affects me most. For me it's Eyes. And a little deeper to my soul to see what I would see in other people's eyes. It's odd, but my art usually comes out sublime. I think that all art contains a piece of the person that has created it, be it colors, designs, or something, there's always an image of how someone felt, or what someone saw, even if the things you see on the canvas are impossible.

Poetry does come from the heart. I know mine are usually based on my own thoughts and feelings. My sons lyrics are based on his emotions..but his art...it is so amazing! I don't know if it is images that he sees in his mind but I know I have seen him look at something as simple as a cloud and come up with some very obscure painting or drawing that a simple little cloud inspired. Does it come from his heart...that I cannot say but it does project very strongly.

I definitely believe in painting images onto canvas can be something hidden from within, or a past life memory forgotten, but evoked out of missing that one thing we were so happy with.

My friend Alix Brett(www.AlixBrett.com) has that in her. I think she was a child who died young in her past life, and has come back to her memory in this life to bring forth images of her childhood. Which she then distorts, and makes into morbid, mind puzzling riddles, and puts them into motion with her self taught artistic view of emotion.

I have never seen someone who can just make something from within. She never went to school for it, and has accomplished much in her career.

In this painting she did this past year entitled, "You were my only air", she has depicted a picture of a child over its mother who is laying on the floor bleeding, and dead. The over all emotion behind it from her is she had just found out her mother died, and she had not spoken to her her in quite sometime. The second thing was her heart being broken over other things in her life of which I can not say due to protecting her privacy.

Below is the painting in which I am speaking of. See what you get out of this, and if you care to PM me that would be nice. I just wanted to share this with you all, as it holds some place inside myself.

painting is like music it touches deeper then anything else the very heart of your soul. For some, painting is like opening a window to the soul and letting out it's most intimate dreams as for me music does it ,I can hear a certain song or type of music and I,m transported to a o unknown place where I can dance like as if I was in a musical movie ,Dancing among the clouds for all the gods to see .

i believe that most images come from the images in daily life. in most, people take a common image and see it differently than others. sometimes you can dreams or distort the image to make it look like something else.
for instance, taking an idea and turning to be a visual aid.. in a way. (the time is slipping by slowly... you could paint clocks dripping...)
also, dreams influence the way we think, draw, and imagine the world. a bad dream can be caused by something unsettling inside or something that is bothering you. (stress or other emotional tugs).
a good dream is usually something that you wish to happen or want to happen. sometimes they seem out of place in your life or of random things that don't make sense at the time.
art expresses what we feel, dream, think, even want.

Creativity, is a swirl of our abstract vision, and our fixed ability to interprite our world, as we see it to others, the reason perhaps why observational art, and even writing, and poetry excells more then self reflective art, or poetry.

I think as an artist, the things I create, whether they be drawings or paintings, the inspiration comes from everyday life. From there ideas manifest in the mind and are combined with feelings. Not everything ends up as it was originally thought of in my minds eye from the beginning, sometimes a mistake in a painting tends to take the creative process in a different direction than originally planned but the end result still has some type of meaning, even if that meaning isn't obvious.

Ya know thats a REALLY good question.
I never thought of it like that either.
But now that I think about it.
My art is based on things i see in life, things I dream of, things I just even think of.
Art is really what you make it.
It's honestly one of those questions where there is no right or wrong answer to.
Cause it all depends on the person and who you are and what your beliefs are.

well your friend is right art is an expresion of the artist. so really it depends on how the artist interprets their feelings, mood, emotion, and thought on to a canvas. so yes it could be past memories, experiences, or dreams they've had, many possibilities. But the best way to know is to discuss it with the artist granted it still possible.

if you use the philosophy of

everything is sprouted from something else then you could say that paintings songs poetry stories sculptures etc.. is sprouted from something else, say looking at a cloud you subconsciously see a dragon or a lion then later on you draw it then the lion or dragon was sprouted from the cloud, however at the same time.what is the definition of originality these days?

When I draw ..I literally have no idea where it comes from. I have been told from family, that I look like I go into a trance. I know there have been times I would sit at my desk and be listening to my ipod and just doodling. Then I look up and several hours have passed and I have something before me that I have drawn waiting to be colored. It is an amazing sensation.I think it is my way of meditation. I can do portrait work just as freely as drawing from my imagination. But the imagination part that "zoning out" is wondrous.

Well...when I think of art, when I look at art, I try to picture myself in it. Surrealsim is a beautiful thing, and it serves to help me think out side of the box, while art like Van Goh gives me perspective of my thoughts. I've always been affected by art, both emotionally and physically.
