Have been evolving at jaw dropping speeds for the past decade or so. We can do just about anything with them nowadays.

Do you think we are going too fast?
Do you think computers will really take over the world some day?

Computers are getting faster and more capable but they still have an IQ of zero. Computers are a tool which have no intent, no will to survive and can only do what they're programmed to do. I see zero risk that they'll take over the world but we have become very dependent upon them.

Computers need no will to survive to be around, and no intent to have full control over people and even the planet. At this pace, in a few decades, computers might just become our will to survive.

i often think the world is already dominated by computers. i mean look around us, nearly everything is run by computers. what happens if power shuts down in a store (or office) and computers aren't running? well the entire store (or office) is lost and can't function.....

Technology is increasing at a rapid rate as far as computers and things go. Look at how quickly they are coming up with updates. You buy a computer today but 6 months from now it is inferior to what is on the market.

Everything from gas stations to grocery stores and hospitals are now computerized. I am not saying the technological advances are a bad thing as they have opened up the world to everyone but it is scary to think about how dependent we are on them.

Indeed, the world is entirely dependent on computers, but until they can think creatively on their own, there's no real need to worry.

Computers are the norm, but at times we need to step back and do more for ourselves. If the computer goes down in a retail store how many of the employees can actually make change?

We also take away learning how to interact with other, type properly and spell. Everything is abbreviated and face to face interaction is limited. Even when we are in groups often we have our cell phones out and are texting or surfing on line.

Can we take a step back and return, at least in part, to before there were computers or is our dependence on them absolute?

If I remember correctly, 2020 is the projected date for computers to surpass human ability.

Rather you like it or not computers are here to stay. Without them we could not maintain our level of civilization and most of the creature comforts we have would go bye bye.

It's a matter of nature that we move at the speed we do. Slowing down or stopping altogether is harmful to progress and humanity.

Do I think we're moving to fast? Not at all. I actually think we're going too slow, but thats another story.
Do I think one day they will rule the world? No. The fear of computer overlords is the product of ignorance and Hollywood.

Computers can only "think" what we tell them too, the same goes for when they can "think" for themselves. Free will is controlled by programing, just look at our own selves.

Computer technology is something amazing and is something that will stir debate for as long as they exist but debate can be a good thing. Again, they're here to stay and they're not going to be stopped. Learn to live with it :)

Technophobia …. Killer topic lol
Only the processer evolved past it’s mark.
Any tech will tell you bus speed on the computer high way lacks and no desire to speed it up ….. duel this n duel that next triple this n triple that … C60 might help as it has no resistance for currents… so faster n wider bus speeds… then add a program that works on fuzzy logic and has a protean processer and the ability to assimilate … then were might have a issue… till then a computer is as stupid as the users… normal a bunch of advanced apes with thumbs…

We ourselves are the ones to blame if we let computers completely take over our human sides. What I mean to say is in regards to the one who says that we don't pick up the phone anymore or write on paper, in many cases this is true. But does anyone really force us to do it? The answer to that is no because computers have made it so easy for us to communicate in ways that we never would have before.

My suggestion is if you feel that you are being too dependent on your computer is to limit your time and get out and do something that takes you away from it.

well I am not so sure that they will control the world Yet, we are letting them control our lives and the progress of our World. I feel that one day we will be so dependant on them that if they were to shut down people may have forgotten the basic ways of life to just survive, now that is a sad thought.

I mean my granddaughter is like pause the TV grandma.. at home she has the DVR where they can pause live TV.. ok well I do not and I tried explaining it and she understood just was not to happy about it and she is only 4 yrs. old.

So there is my point the new generations are gonna be so dependant on the computers / machinery that they may not even know how to live without them.

I see that for the future and well It is just sad to even think of. We are becoming lazy yet fast paced at the same time if that makes any sense to people but, one day they will be what people need for total survival, That is what the peolpe will think at least and it is sad.

Behind each computer there is a team of people who built and programmed it. As others have said, a computer is only as good as the people who program it. However good it is, it's only artificial intelligence.

There's some jobs which can only be done by humans, at least considering the current level of technology. In our lifetime at least, computers will always be around in a secondary, assisting capacity.

LOL that is funny Dabbler , I like that. Well I hope your right maledicta (sp) sorry if I spelled it wrong . I hope they stay secondary yet the thing is alot of jobs are done by humans invovle them pushing a button and controls that make the computer do the work. I fear that one day they will not need that human to do such task, because they can program them to do it on their own as so many already do.

Computers run about 90% of our financial systems and if they were to crash completely then we would be screwed because Paper trails are almost a thing of the past for companies and banks that alone is scary to me.

When the systems are down at the bank you cannot even get a balance, same at the stores when the systems are down they pull out calculaters and paper and pencils and still not sure if they got it right.

I just feel that we have became to dependant on them. I have people always askin why do I not use the computer for this or that.. hello hackers, systems break downs etc need I say more LOL

anyway I hope they do stay secondary for us and not total primary means of doing things.

Well, Moore's law for the doubling of clock speed ceased to hold true around 2003, sothe pace of advancement has slowed somewhat. However, advaces have been made with parallel processing and multithreaded software. Also, the world's first quantum computer was rendered operational last year, yet I have yet to see any advances from that hit the market. Massively parallel supercomputer clusters are being built with each faster than the predecessor, so this is where any advancements in large artificial intelligece systems may be readily made. The U.S. Army is also developing an interface using brainwaves as a computer input device. This may revolutionize how we use systems, even for cybernetic applications. I welcome this kind of development, because a species and a people that improves itself is only making itself more superior to others. Luddistic opposition to technological development is unfounded and harmful.

I suggest a shift in cognitive perspective. Computers haven't taken over our lives. We've taken over our lives using computers. Electric lights are everywhere. Does that mean they're taking over our lives? Or have we been given more control over our lives through the use of electric lights?

We use computers for the same reason we use electric lights -- they're convenient and they allow us to do things we couldn't do without them. The fear that computers are taking over is really just the realization that computers are extremely useful tools -- so useful that they have permeated our society.

As for the updates you continually receive, many are simply bug fixes or added features. Most are simply modifications to software modules which prevent security holes such as buffer over-runs. These should have been guarded against in the initial implementation of the software because by inputting parameters well outside of the intended use, software execution can sometimes be diverted to other memory areas, not intended by the original programmers. This can allow them to use a legitimate piece of software to launch their malware on your system.

As with most things technological, understanding is the key, not unfounded fears.

Cars, monitors, LCD panels, electric lights, speakers, cameras, lasers, computers, polymers, composite materials, electromagnetic waves and methods to release thermal energy are not our enemies. Without them, we'd be covered in parasite-infested animal skins, sleeping in caves and arguing about whether or not Grog should be pounding rocks together to produce sharpened edges which can be harmful -- even fatal. A computer is simply a vast array of on/off switches. There's no mystery except for those who choose to remain suspicious rather than informed.

There are plenty of movies where computers take over and become our masters or attempt to wipe out humans. Each and every one (I've seen), relies upon the idea that the computers become sentient (self-aware). This simply isn't possible with current computer technology. They're switches -- millions and millions of switches. It's up to the programmers to decide which switches get turned on and which get turned off and in what order.

Anthropomorphizing computers is a mistake (the result of an intense lack of understanding) -- just as much as it was when people anthropomorphized mountains that could spew molten rock, ash and gas and started sacrificing themselves to the personified geological formation.

"Computers are only as good as their programmers"

That quote, I would assume, applies to individuals, right? Notice how the question is people and not person?

Computers shouldn't be compared with light. Computers can feed you, give you air, cloth you, help you go to the bathroom, hell they can even massage you. Computers are used for cell mechanics now. Computers are used to travel, to learn, to understand.

They don't need a human's 5 senses to see, to think, to feel and smell. Those 5 senses are called micro chips. This is what makes computers so superior from people.

As someone mentioned in another thread, we won't stop progressing. We will move forward, advancing our technology, until our technology does everything for us. That, in itself, is computers taking over the world, in every sense.

And you see how you can understand every word in this post? No double talk needed, it's pretty obvious that computers have more "intent" than people do.

"Computers shouldn't be compared with light. Computers can feed you, give you air, cloth you, help you go to the bathroom, hell they can even massage you. Computers are used for cell mechanics now. Computers are used to travel, to learn, to understand."

I would have to disagree. Computers are useful so they're being interfaced with many other tools. The computers themselves can do nothing more than flip switches on and off. Lights are useful and are interfaced with many other things. How many lights can you count in and on your car? When driving, is your safety at all compromised if a light fails to function?

The only thing any modern computer can do is what we design it to do. It has no more intent than a screwdriver or an electric drill. One can attach an electric drill to a mount with a sanding belt stretched across two rollers and it becomes the power for a sander. That doesn't make the drill a sander. One can attach a stirring tool and use it to mix paint. One can take that same drill, fit it with a bit, and drill it into the temple of a living person. The drill didn't choose to kill anyone. The person using the drill made that choice. You can also kill someone with a screwdriver. That doesn't make the screwdriver bad nor did the screwdriver choose to kill anyone.

Let's try a little experiment. How many of those posting here (this thread), can recite their cell phone number without looking? Did the cell phone tell you not to memorize your number? Is it the phone's intent that you not know your number or the numbers of people you might wish to call?

If people have made the choice to let the technology work for them, that's the choice and intent of the people; not the choice or intent of the device. Flip through the menus on your phone. Most contain a way to display the phone's number. Now memorize it.

Was that so hard? Did you have to fight with the phone over whether or not you would memorize your own number? The responsibility is ours and ours alone. We can choose to utilize the technology properly or we can choose to misuse the technology. We can choose to become lazy and completely reliant upon electronic devices or we can choose to utilize the technology without sacrificing our independence. Whatever we do, it's our choice, not that of the technology.

The comparison between computers and electric lights is perfectly reasonable and demonstrably appropriate. We can use lights to enhance our safety, to extend our work hours, to serve as indicator lights and warning panels, to direct traffic or even as decoration. We can use lights to annoy others, as targeting devices, to damage another being's eyes or note whether a business is open for business or closed. They enhance our ability to travel after dark. We choose how we will or will not utilize lights and we choose how we will or will not utilize computers. It's exactly the same concept and the fears people may have held concerning one, are not being expressed for the other. In all the time which has passed between, people seem to have ignored the final factor -- human responsibility.

Take responsibility for what choices you make. Don't try to displace them onto lumps of glass, metal, plastic and silicon.

Right beast, it is up to us whether to misuse technology or not, and we are choosing to misuse it. As a product of that, computers are becoming more and more impossible to live without each and every day. Once technology starts to create people, food, light, climate and the like, and there are no more people on this planet, there will no longer be anyone to think and say "Hey, it was our fault! We did this!"

Then there is the interfacing, upgrades, and without all the upgrades (installed be Meat Beings). Can we have some examples of how it's almost impossible to live without a computer? If you want to take advantage of the things computer technology offers, then you'll need a computer. If you don't want to take advantage of it, you won't need a computer anymore than anyone did in the 1950s.
---

bloodraver89,

Computers can't do anything without us. The assist us, they don't replace us. Honest! Get up, walk across the room and tell me what you computer does that you can't do.

What people don't understand, people suspect as evil. Gain the understanding and the "evil intent" goes right out the window.

Computers can expand your mental capacity. You can use the computer to enhance your abilities. It's easier to simply become angry when you can't figure out a piece of software or a web site, but the choice is yours. Embrace the technology from an intellectual stance or hate it for what you don't know.

They have taken over already. Notice when the electricity goes out. No pumps for gas(comp. chip ), supermarkets close( register elec & comp for inventory) and even your local Doctor's appt book is now on the computer. So my point is what is a few more steps.

Good point on the power equation, until computers can maintain their own power source they need us.. unless they figure out how to turn us into a power source.. *cough Matrix.. matric chough.. *

god i hope they do!

i joke.
really it's amazing how dependent people are becoming on computers, i use mine everyday in my work and while it helps me develop my projects much faster than the 'olden ways'
if i ever had a major problem i couldn't resolve (or that my geek friends couldn't help with) i would be put behind for weeks.

really if technology is moving too fast it's because we, as consumers, demand it does.
it's not just computers, every year there is a new camera i feel i just HAVE to have. cellular phones keep getting more and more elaborate and how many different types of ipods are there?

if AI ever develops beyond our control it may just be like the Trapper Keeper episode of South Park.

Indeed. We're heading for the next Matrix sequel..lol
I don't put too much stock in it...although I do happen to have a very wierd, very paranoid father who thinks that all the movies that hollywood puts out are there to warn the public that certain things are real without it being reported by the news and media so as to not creat a panic but rather to make us prepared. (alien coverups, political coruption--and yes even movies like IRobot with AI). He lives a very sheltered life! LOL

I dont think it will be the computer themselves but something that man does to make computers turn on man. In the end it always something that man has done to bring something to turn against us. Take a dog for example. It is mans best friend but if it is treated cruelly it will turn against us.

Very true. It would appear the human race is a glutton for punishment! To name a few there's global warming, polution, demolishing of forests, leading animals to their extinction...and possibly creating a computer(s) that will rebel against us. Although we do rely on technology for just about everything these days. Everyone seemed to freak out with the potential devestating Y2K. But it seems due to technology that humans have become incredibly lazy. For instance in modern day, with as smart as we are supposed to be, just the simple task of making the correct change at a register seems to be a tedious task for some individuals, even when the register indicates how much change to give. LOL IDK...maybe the Amish have it all figured out. hehe I think I'll go convert. ;)

I believe that computers will control certain areas of the world but not the entire world. I do not believe that computers will however by the demise of the human race. When I say certain areas I mean with the way we communicate with each other or the way our cars and or other machinery are powered .

Computers are an important part of most and I repeat most peoples lives, be at work or at home but I don't think the World's capacity to function will totally depend on computers.

We didn't have the technology we have today say 50 years ago, but the World still turned, people had jobs, there was food on their tables.

No I dont think we are going to fast. We need to advance the computer has openned our eyes to new and different things we are doing everything by computer now, we shop, we talk write letters and search for information. The computer has now become something we relie upon we cannot do without it. As far as computers taking over, yeah I suppose it could happen but man will have to have an imput into it.

I have thought about the speed in which we are moving ahead before. Just think about how fast we have moved in just the past 100 years. I mean, hell, it's gone from covered wagon, to carrying music around in a tiny box. Or internet on your phones. Or mobile phones for that matter! It's insane and odd how we were living before and then BAM, suddenly there are cars, air conditioning, Bob Marley, Diet Coke and NOW PEPSI WITH ONE CALORIE! When will it end?

Will computers take over? Eh, I dunno about that. Someone has to set that shit up. :P The Geek squad...now I can see THEM taking over the world. :P

The concept of 'Super Computers' has always been something of a fear, and the idea that amongst themselves at some stage they could communicate independently of Humankind completely, and thus become Dominant, but when we think of the problems we have with our own pc's, from time to time, well, we have to grin...;)

Interestingly enough, back before we had computers everywhere, I used to work part-time at a gas station. Do you know what happened when the electricity went out? We couldn't pump any gas because the pumps were powered by electricity. So what's changed?

Your doctor has a choice. It turns out he finds computers to be an extremely useful means of keeping an appointment book. Otherwise he'd probably be keeping an old hand-written ledger. So it seems the vast "evil" associated with computers comes down to the simply fact that they are very useful tools.

Ever notice how many clocks and watches there are? Does that mean they've taken over? Or maybe it just means they're very useful and convenient.

If you were referring to my post asking for support for the claim that computers now exist which can think for themselves, my request was for TheDoctor who claimed that such computers exist. I'd very much like to see support for that claim because I believe it to be blatantly wrong.

a computer only know to do what you tell it too, it doesnt evolve on its own, it doesnt create on its own, and it cant take over the world.... on its own, and the speeds have increased slower then you would think, its a consumer market control thing, why give us a 100 gighz pc now, when we will buy, a 1ghz a 2ghz a 3ghz, well you get my point!!

I made a journal entry sort of along these lines. I feel computers already have had a major takeover on alot of things in our everyday lives.
There are things that you can't do without a computer that used to was the simplest thing in the world before computers had more of an effect on all of us.
I have to admit there are some things good about computers such as meeting new friends on sites such as VR but overall they do seem to have a powerful effect on too many areas in life.

Going to take over the world? LOL no of course not. it if computers did somehow become some sort of living "thing" and was able to do what it wanted, such as taking over the world. Just unplug them! lol

Since I've recently admitted to a computer addiction and even asked my Housemates for an intervention, one of the comments above resonated deeply . . ."computers may become our will to live." Forgive me if I'm misquoting. Beast also touched on choice. The electric light analogy doesn't quite work for me --- I don't feel the need to constantly flip the light switch on, or turn the T.V. on, or the stereo. So while I may need electricity for my life to run smoothly, I can go camping and be happy without it (while still harboring an unmistakeable yearning for my laptop).

And the primary reason for the addiction is the communication factor . . . with other humans.

There are people communicating online, and using language, who probably never raised their hands in class. I think there is learning happening with humans because of computers. Just not sure how deep, or how much retention.

Fuzzy engineering is about the closest projection for "self thinking" computers/technology, Japan leads the market/field, still though that is a farther projected matter then we are ready for, plenty of tech needs to be in place for AI to even be feisable. The hyper expectancy, and shooting past the current tech staple is a common thing, it is always what is not (but could be) that people set their mark on, using the newest computer operating system to speculate on what the next systems benifits and flaws will be..
When we create a computer to perfect our demise. Spooky stuff? The thing is that people that are all hyper "this-could-happens", fail to understand that Sci-fi, has been imagining what they believe to be actual

Beltrand,

Re: "There are things that you can't do without a computer that used to was the simplest thing in the world before computers had more of an effect on all of us."

Such as?
---

Bloodmother,

Re: "And the primary reason for the addiction is the communication factor . . . with other humans."

I think this really cuts to the heart of the problem. It's not the computer you crave; it's social contact. Humans are social creatures. It's not unlike how a dog whines and stares out the window when left home alone. They have a very strong social drive just as people do.

The computer is simply your means to attain social interaction. Blaming the computer or even calling it a "computer addiction" is a bit like blaming the bottle for an alcohol addiction. It's not the bottle you're addicted to, it's the alcohol it brings with it. Likewise, it's not the computer you're addicted to, it's the social interaction you can achieve through the use of the computer. And since our need for social interaction is an evolutionary adaptation, it's not really addiction so much as an attempt to fulfill an evolved need.
---

Noirtist,

Re: "Computers have made society intellectually lazy.

While I do get your point I think it's more accurate to say that we have allowed ourselves to become lazy because we have chosen to let the computer do the work for us. But it doesn't require a computer. A simple calculator can take on the task of doing our math for us.

If it weren't for computers I'd likely never have developed an interest in binary numbering. But because of computers and my choice to take an interest, I developed an understanding of binary numbering which lead to hexadecimal and octal. From there I wrote a program for my computer which converts from any base to any other base (from binary through base-12). And when I write a program, it's rare that some math isn't involved. The computer might do the number crunching, but I have to show it what numbers to crunch and how, in order to arrive at the proper answers. So it's just a choice we make. We can become more adept intellectually, or we can choose to be lazy. If we choose to be lazy, it's not the fault of the computer.

So isn't blaming the computer for our intellectual laziness something like blaming our cars for the fact that we don't walk and get the exercise we should? And isn't that also our choice? I drive a car to work and back even though it's only 5-miles each way. Yet I also make the choice to ride my bike for recreation, often to the tune of about 100-miles a week. It's a choice, not a take-over.

We have made ourselves intellectually lazy and physically lazy. That's not the fault of the technology.

True, generally speaking, it is the social interaction. Specifically, it is the kind of social interaction we get via the computer that makes the difference for many of us. Unless you're a complete shut-in, you're bound to have interaction with other humans, but if a preference is developed for that interaction via the typepad, that's the qualifying difference.

Wow interesting thread needless to say LOL Well technology has come along way for us and I agree the people allow them selves to become dependant on the computer and new age technology, I mean we still have free will last time I checked. I myself use it as little as possible so my mind stays sharp LOL

Yet, as was said in another post kids today are allowed to use calculators and stuf in school where as we had to use just good 'ole know how and our minds. I do not feel computers will take over the world like they show in Terminator* yet I do feel they will be more essential in the future for us to function, more so than we already do.

We've come to rely on many things. How many people living in colder regions could exist as they do without clothing? What about the homes in which we shelter ourselves from the elements? It's reached the point where if someone can survive in the wild for even 5-days, they get their own show on the Discovery Channel.

We've become reliant upon artificially generated lights, clocks, telephones, televisions, fax machines, cook-stoves, access to hot water, clothing, glasses, medications, knives, forks, spoons, plates, refrigerators, heaters, hair dryers... the list goes on and on.

The only real difference with computers is that they're still relatively new and most people don't seem to have a clue as to how they technology actually works.

We don't go on claiming that clothing is taking over or that artificial light sources are running our lives because we are fully used to these things. We were born into a world where such things were a standard and they have been a standard for several generations. Computers are simply newer, very versatile, and extremely useful. But just as one can go camping and leave their flashlight and lantern at home, one can unplug their computer and do their math with a pencil and paper if they choose.

It's all about perspective (maintaining it), and choice. :)

Beastt - It's not because he can survive for 5 days in the wild it's because he's hot and gets naked nearly every episode :)

I totally agree with you that we have allowed ourselves to become dependent on computer technology.

The who idea behind computers, or any form of progress, is to make our lives better, more efficient, safer and more productive.

We can't blame an LCD screen for making us tYpE liKe thIS or for not being able to do basic math.

Many of these "hollow earth" people as I call them (those who blame technology, think the LHC is going to end the world etc) also seem to ignore fundamental economic forces. There would be no genetic modification of foods, or iPods for that matter, unless the CONSUMER demanded it nor would the drive towards AI happen unless people were willing to buy it.

It's rather sad that people are all to ready to blame, disagree or even become belligerent towards technology without having the slightest clue as to the facts, forces and purposes behind it.

Of course in a world preoccupied with Anna Nichole Smith, Paris Hilton and Tom Cruise it's not so surprising.

The same people that fret such things are ready to claim, access to mystic powers. when you mention the inheirent (imagined potentials, example possession) they shun such warning.. yet prepare for doom, when only a margin of error is possible (as in a science advancement)

That tells me that we can have all the advanced tech, and people will still follow the occult mystics to the bliss, or hype.

Technology is just a worldly thing, after all, I sure cannot ewait until some guru/psychic makes a psychic alternative to cell phones.. I want to work at the first PSI power plant, but I doubt that I will any time soon, but perhaps I can intreset some occult followers to invest in my research? Just think, you can be on the for front of advances in PSI energy.. used to power the world.

Civil engineering will be done by PSI enhanced machines. I wqill even show you results in the new field within 5 months of the first investments..

This is a possiblity if you consider that many computer part assemblies are computer controlled, and many computer designs are done using computer programs.

May be only a few years away for the systems to do it all on their own.

But there is still that issue of finding, processing, and delivering the raw materials to build everything.

The first reported case of "Software Harrassment."

That is an interesting question...what sort of government would a computer society have? Would they operate as a collective mind (mainframe), would they be individuals (PCs), or a combination of the two (networked computers with synced databases)?

I haven't read any of the responses to this, because I feel sooo strongly about it. I'm just going with how I feel on this.

Computers are it. We, as humans are done. How many of you carry cash anymore? I don't, all debit card. If someone asks for a dollar for the football pool..shit, I don't have cash.

Now we have to have a passport for Canada and Mexico? What next? Do I need one to go to a concert in Chicago? They are tracking us...constantly.

I heard a statistic today. For the Fannie Mae blach blach bailout, it will cost each and every person in the US..newborn, male ,female $2300 to bail out these aholes.

Thats not tax payers, thats every man, woman and child..job or no job.

Hmm, so I got off the computer question a tad..sorry.

My feeling is, the better tech gets the worse it is for human kind.

I don't call anyone anymore, I text them. I don't mail my bills I email them. I don't share pictures with friends at work, I "share" them.

It can't be right!

That is very true. We rely on the plastic card, al paperwork we use to do at work is now stored on a computer. Kids learn computer skills before they can even count. All it takes is for a virus or something and we loose everything.
