The use of Page Refreshers on any Dark Network site is strictly forbidden. This is well known, and outlined in the Terms of Service.

I will no longer tolerate the use of page refreshers.

15 members have been suspended for the use of page refreshers. More suspensions are likely. These members cheat The Dark Network, Dark Network advertisers, and other Dark Network members. A member who uses a page refresher:

  • Falsely inflates their Status.

  • Falsely inflates the Favor of their Society.

  • Cheats Dark Network advertisers. Advertisers pay for page views that no one is actually viewing.

  • Cheats other Dark Network members who honestly earn their Status.

  • Wastes Dark Network resources. Pages are being generated that no one views. Bandwidth is wasted.

This will no longer be tolerated. If you are using a page refresher you will be caught, suspended, and possibly banned from accessing any Dark Network site. Don’t think you’ll get away with it. I have been lax in my enforcement of this policy as of late. However, I have installed new scripts that will catch you if you try to cheat the system.

I have notified my coven as I too do not approve of such dishonourable tactics.

I'd rather be proud in the knowledge that I worked hard to get where I am today. I cannot fathom how people who cheat can be proud, but usually they aren't around for very long to get noticed much. ;)

    Just my 2¢

I'll remind my Coven Members about this as well as point them towards this thread to read.

Adding my point, the increase of status feels much better when you actually earn it instead of 'cheating the system'.

It's basically what it sounds like. Some browsers have a[n] Auto Page Refresher built into them that will refresh the page every few seconds, depending on the setting. I believe there is also a JavaScript Code for it.

I didn't know that you could do that I knew you could click of refresh but I've never heard of a page refresher

So If we refresh the page manual only because we were gone for a few minutes and don't want to be auto logged out thats ok right?

For coven masters. If you want to bust members using an auto clicker. Stalking them helps. When I was an ACM we caught a member using one. In a 24 hour period he/she had over 6000 log ins! that is IMPOSSIBLE unless he/she was using a clicker. Stalking info will help.

I have a question. I am using Mozilla Firefox I have used the refresh button to reload the Coven Members page to update my favor to see how I am going. I then went to our Coven Forum and I was logged out saying that it looks like I am using a refresher and my account is under review.

I do not use a refresher that keeps reloading pages but I do refresh my page in firefox....I know and agree with stopping ppl using a refresher but does that mean we are going to be reviewed and investigated everytime we refresh a page in our internet browser.

After I got logged out I was able to log straight back in, I am confused here.

It might have logged you out for hammering. Meaning refreshing the page repeatedly. Sometimes, when I had firefox, one click would make it load 3 or 4 tims and it would log me out for hammering. I explorer eliminated that problem for me though.

Thats what I thought when it first happened but I happened to read the box that came up and it did state refresher, I was rating the books in the database and because of the update I was going back through and doing all the ones that had new on them. I thought a refresher wouldnt go through the pages it only refreshed the same page. So if VR keeps track of the pages it would of seen a different page each time. That why I am confused.

    Scifi-Fan,

Hitting refresh, isn't what Cancer is looking for. A page refresher, refreshs a single page, over and over at timed intervals.

Some people set this up...and then walk away from their computer, then return hours later. They will get the favors, for the time spent and the pages viewed. It will give their society a boost in ratings and favors, which will increase their overall standings. The individual will get an increase in their rank.

Cancer is simply trying to even the playing ground.

    SciFiFan

I don't think the auto message that you get mentions 'refreshers' at all - and I don't think it logs you out either - it is far more likely that you were logged out for hammering

I use firefox and have to have many tabs open when I am procurating. Sometimes if the pages are 'sticking' they all free up at once - the system will see you opening say 10 pages all within a second or so, and you're auto logged out. It is no biggie

If the system detects what looks like a refresher in use, you get a set message simply letting you know what is suspected ... the system's report will then be looked at by a human being and, if it can be seen that you are cheating everyone, you get punished. If it can be seen that you're not cheating, nothing else happens

Seems a good and fair system

I had the same problem but don't use the same system. It made me made because I don't use these gadgets. I use my poor fingers to do everything and I type about 80 wpm so I am constantly throttled. I hope that this does not mean I will get suspended for something I do not have. I don't use refreshers! I hope the review goes well. Now I'm worried about typing too fast. Does this mean I have to type slow now because it'll look like I have a refresher???

    PandorasBx -

This is an Acolyte Message Cancer sent out a few days ago. It will explain.

''There is a 12 hour rule in effect. No member can be logged into the Dark Network (any site) for more than 12 hours per day. This is not timed as a continuous log in, it's recorded on a 24 hour clock. 3 hours here, 6 hours there, etc.

If your user was logged out, they WERE logged in for 12 hours of the 24 hour period that was monitored.

The 24 hour clock runs from 12am to 12am -0 GMT (London time). When a member hits this limit/logout, they cannot log in until the next day.. Then the clock starts rolling again.

If you're on the US east coast (-5 GMT), this means a user who is locked out can log in again at 7pm. This is when the daily clock is reset.

This rule has recently been put into effect to prevent people from being logged in 24 hours a day. See my forum post on page refreshers for more information.

As a final note, if your user continues to assert that they were not logged in for 12 hours, remember that this is based on a 24 hour period. This time I will use the US west coast as an example (-8 GMT).

The clock in this time zone runs from 4pm to 4pm. If a user logs 8 hours (4pm to 12am), goes to sleep, then logs 4 hours the next morning(6am to 10am), they will be locked out until 4pm, when the clock once again resets for the day.
    ''

    Yeah,

its a shame that the cheats have made this situation necessary

I too have paid for my membership and worked really hard for my status, I don't see why any member (paid or unpaid) should be in a position to cheat me out of what I worked for

I don't see why any member (paid or unpaid) should be in a position to cheat the nice people who advertise on the site ~ after all, if they pay for 1000 people to see their ad that is what they should get - not an unattended auto-refresher loading their ad 1000 times

The privileges of premium membership are awesome and set out very clearly when you buy into it - they do not include avoiding the site's measures to give all members a fair chance inside the status system

    My 2c worth

We have no idea what is meant by 'page refreshers', but we in our Coven will ensure all members know of this, as it is 'bad form' for any to artificially seek to put themselves 'ahead of the game' by default, and this we would neither condone nor tolerate in NOCTURNAL FELINITY.

Now, having read this thread in more detail, we have complete clarification and understanding as to what is meant by 'page refreshers', and thus have put out a strict and concise SOCIETY and also lodged on a Coven thread, what is meant by this.

Any Hellcat found to be abusing the VR system will be automatically dispensed with by kicking.

We expect only High Standards, within NOCTURNAL FELINITY.

So if I'm logged on and hit my refresh button several times on any given page, will that set off the refresher dogs?

I know what refreshers are...I don't use or condone the use of them. What for? For a person(s) to go THAT far seems kind of AWKWARD to say the least.

I mean don't get me wrong, I totally dig & love VR but to actually make it my goal to get a refresher to boost my status/stats seems almost absurd. I like having to try to move up levels and rating profiles on my own and not with script help...

It's too bad that no system is fool proof.

I paid for my membership BUT Cancer is the one that allows us to have the account. He's THE Prince. He's the shot caller. He's the SERVER GOD.

I know some people that stay logged on forever...my sister is one of those jaggedxtears.

Now that we have the 12 hour limit, I'll catch up to her ;)

    Ha ha ha!

I jest to make light of the situation.

Then you have those that always want to beat the system...

    Thanks for all the info.

And a SUPER UBER THANK YOU TO:

    ladychordewa & mbk

    FOR providing detailed info.

    BOOM you're awesome.

    ;)

    Ok to clarify.

Cancer is limiting time on VR, to 12 hours, for those that use Page refreshers. Everyone is going to be limited, including the admins, lifetime members, premium and basic members. There is no favoritism when it comes to that. It may change in the future, but for now, we deal with it.

If you hit refresh several times in a row, you will probably be logged out for hammering. It won't sick the "refresher dogs" on you. They are specifically looking for someone that is on for long periods of time, with a timed interval. Basically, it is looking at someone's profile that is refreshing the page, EXACTLY, every 30 seconds for several hours at a time.

I believe that Art said it best. Due to cheaters, we lost the ability to gain favors, with the games. Due to cheaters, we are being limited on our time here.

This is Cancer's way of attempting to even the playing field. Like I said, it may change, it may not. We will just have to see.

    Wow....

For me, that would seriously take all the fun out of being on VR by having a refresher. I would have much more fun if I earned my credit fully by being on here physically earning my credits by not cheating.

    That's just me tho.

Really why do people like that have to waste their own time if they are going to do this?

I saw that message about hammering many months ago and I wasn't using any kind of refresh manual or automated. I didn't know why it said that. I was just reading journals to be truthful. I refresh sometimes when I go to look and see who has been to my profile. My page sometimes won't load right because my memory is low at the moment and sometimes my profile. I have gotten paranoid so I usually now just go to the home page and then come back and its loaded. I have noticed or thought I was not getting credit for things and I am not breaking any rules. With the crazies that have come in here recently and all the change in format and now all of this it is beginning not to be fun to be in this forum and I pay for two. I don't know what to think and there seem to be these rating vendettas going on as well. I have no clue what or how to rig up an automated refresher. Any time I use one it is because I got a blank page all black or can't see certain things because they simply didn't load correctly.

I really hate to contradict LadyC but I think there's a typo in her first line

Cancer is limiting time on VR to 12 hours, for everyone - not just those that use page refreshers

    Azuredark,

hammering is when you open too many pages too rapidly. It can happen for a lot of reasons, that is no biggie, just log back in.

If you're not at your computer to log back in, or not at your computer to reply to admin messages, yet still your computer is clicking away for hours on end - well .....

Some people may have missed that these refreshers cost the site real money. Cancer is paying for bandwidth to display page after page to unattended computers - and advertisers might be driven away if they think they might pay for their ads to be sent to the same unattended computer thousands of times.

I think that everyone needs to take a big breath - if you're not cheating the system, carry on as you always have done and enjoy.

I can see the point with that very well. Hope everything works out. There are always for some reason people who have to take advantage and make things uncomfortable for everyone else. Sighs...

Good luck and hope the changes work and perhaps some will settle down in attitude as well.

    Best Wishes

As usual, people are complaining about things that don't even affect them.

Since I put the 12 hour limit into effect, it's been triggered 3 or 4 times - legitimately. Those who were online 24 hours a day, every day, aren't anymore. Additionally, this limit is on a per account basis. Most of you who are on VR for more than 8 hours a day have 2 or more accounts anyway. With 2 accounts, you could be logged into VR 24 hours a day - 12 hours on each.

If you only have 1 account, and you come to me and provide valid justification for being on VR more than 12 hours per day, I can exempt you from the restriction.

The cheats are more or less gone. There will be more suspensions, especially as new members join the site, but for the most part, eveything has been fixed. The only people who are 'mad' about the 12 hour rule are those who can't run their refreshers 24 hours a day now. Sire can't be hit in 2 months anymore. Status means something.

12 hours is HALF the day. If you are on VR, legitimately, more than half your day, every day (not just now and then), we need to talk.

But I see all the logs and this restriction is barely being hit now that the cheats are gone.

I like this time idea that you have Cancer.

I don't mind the 12 hour time change at all. I could never stay on VR for that long.

So... It would never bother me.

All I can say myself, Cancer, is that it is reassuring that such rigorous policing is taking place, as it serves to inspire confidence on many counts, in that we can be safe in the knowledge that Beneficent Intentions are at the Core Of All.

I agree with everyone on this topic refreshers are stupid and a waste of time. Anyone who uses one in my opinion should be banished from this site along with all over dark network sites as well. I love everything that this place has come to be with all of the new sites and for me personally it ruins the whole experience if you have to have people on here cheating the system and it is something that im glad to see is being stopped in one or another period.

If people continue to do this even with the 12 hour rule in effect then the simple answer would be to remove 'page views' from being included in attaining a higher status and just have it as things rated! Anyone genuine would still view pages and the sponsors would get a better value too.

Well, the codes written in to catch the offenders and the 12-hour rule both keep the people doing this from doing it again. I'm not sure they can strip the pages viewed out without losing further user info, can they?

It is not automatic, you have to set your browser to auto refresh. Usually it is an option in one of the context menus labelled 'reload/refresh every...'

In firefox you have to install an add-on called reload every to enable auto refresh.

I think the 12 hour rule is a good idea to stop people from cheating the time spent counter and inflating their status. I don't come anywhere near hitting the 12 hour limit and those that do may need to get out into the real world more.

Glad this has came up again. We notified out House long ago about them being illegal here in VR. Glad there is now ways to catch the cheaters. Not fair to everyone else who is busting their butts to earn favor and level up the right way. Just as it isn't fair for some people to be logged on 24 hours a day and you know they have to sleep sometime, but yet they are still online.
