Many people become interested in things that have to do with supernatural things from watching TV or movies. Many people start life styles based off of movies and TV and books. How do movies such as “Under World, Dracula, Twilight, Harry Potter" from each of these names there are people who take on the opinions of the movies for truth, or life styles.

How does this affect the community of people who are not in the norm? Can it be positive, negative or both? Please explain your answer.

Movies tend to make the viewer overly expectant of anything, example, a kid that goes to see a Kung fu film wants to go take classes, only to be disappointed when what is required to devote too.

The nonsensational moments are glanced over in movies. Like here in califoria the boom in skateboards when Gleaning the Cube came out, I am sure ERs had a boost in skateboard related injuries. Movies also tend to annoy those that practice anything, the movie versed people posing as knowledgable is trying.

i tend to agree...tv and movies create false impressions, at least for the most part. shows like "ghost hunters" is pretty good, and shows some hard headed scientific methodology. i love the show even tho id love to see a real parapsychologist involved.

i do belive that movies and tv leave false impressions for people or give them a fales impression on what something is

like the biggest thing that gets me , is from under world most people take it for fact that vampires and were wolfs fight because of that reason, or that from the legand from the movie that is how vampires and were wolfs were creted

or things like the harry potter movie and the craft where they think magic is truley like the movies and go out and act just like it

Even in my hobby TV shows like Spook Project, and Boiling point create a tempral, often times shallow (and tacky) amatur presence. Some gain a moderate curiousity, while others go the hyper stimulation. In the long run those who practice what relates to the movie benifit, but only after eduring the hype fall out.

Well it CAN be positive, because it may get people more interested in the lifestyles and willing to learn about it, but it can be negative because some may just take what they see on TV to be truth and not look into it.

At worst it attracts attention to those who have studied, and dedicated time, and resources learning.

Stores, and Botiques where made popular by TV, and movies, even more so with the florensic interest when CSI Las Vegas Hit the scene. Imagine being a studying student around that time, listening to people paraphrase
Script Jargon.

Then some may be inspired to interact with past interest through movies,
Even this site contributes to the portraial of a sub culture. How people adopt
A sub culture, rather then a passing curiousity they go in with media matched expectation.

I agree - pop culture's influence on the masses is too strong; people believe whatever they see now.
What irritates me is when people assume that what is shown on TV and movies 1s historically factual.
Years ago, a friend commented on how I looked like a 'black Egyptian'...she was under the impression that an Egytian looks like Elizabeth Taylor in the film "Cleopatra"...I had to remind her that most Egyptians look like me...LOL!

If the person watches those movies that you stated they are only seeing our life style from a biased source. I think if a person really wants to get a grasp on the paranormal or alternative they need to do research. Going by what the movies say is ignorant.

There is some positive things, but they are very few and little because the truth is warped by Hollywood special effects.

So what the persons prior interest, or exposure to paranormal concepts plays a role in their reaction to supernatural shows, perhaps even more so when they are presented as reality TV.

It depends on the person.

For some it is just a movie/series others decide to take it seriously and it can lead to mental issues in some cases.

As for society some get shocked and make a fuss out of a movie/series and boycott it , others take the occasion to create a fad, or create a mania or take it as an occasion for business and sell stuff related to the move/series.

In my case I've started to like these things from TV but always considered them as fictional but possibly true, never took anything out of hand and always loved discussing about these topics even if I would have never saw them on the TV before. For some the interest would have come out anyway while for others would just get disappointed it is not like in the movies, like it was mentioned before.

TV is a brainwashing device, its purpose is to turn people into mindless slaves and it does it very well.its nicknamed the glass toilet as its transparent and you see shit.somebody once called it a running sewer into your living room.ive not had one for years and so noticed how it controlls peoples minds ,once i kicked the habit.people amazingly believe everything it says.they dont realise that it lies.its an instrument of the state to programn its slaves.

In my opinion it's a good thing and a bad thing:
The good thing is it is finally bringing things to light that most people already believe.

The bad thing is it can make people want to become what they see these people I call chameleon's
but they are harmless because they eventually find something else to obsess about.

Fot the person who is into the real supernatural, the content of a Movie, Book or Tv, can not make that person change his/her mind. Now, for the novice, is another story. Many "people" see a movie, and, Wow, now they want to be like the character. Ie, The blair witch project. That movie create such of mess within the wicca community that as today the damaged still present.

i think it can effect them both in a good and bad way,i think most shows like this play on peoples fears and are very creative,so not always when a person becoems interested is it for good reasons as some movies are not fact at all,but in the good it does give the person the ability to found out their own truth about things by self discovery and personal investigation in some instances.

Interesting post and very interesting to see the answers for sure…..
I would like to pop back to dabblers first post.
I also watched Karate kids as a youth, I also wanted to take up kung fu.
I was not bothered by the discipline or devote time needed to walk to the dojo and find the money to pay for my teaching, I guess some societies are based on the quick instant gratification … anything else is ignored.

TV has a lot to answer for … lol

Funny I just watched a episode of supernatural … to do with pagan gods of Yule… *shakes head at the information given to make a story line* it gave the impression meadowsweet as used by the Druids as part of a three herb drink was in fact a sacrificing herb used to attract gods for sacrifice… no mention of it’s magical property to stop pain and fevers and settle upset stomachs even diarrhea ….. ahh TV artistic license for sure..

I suppose a rule of thumb is don't believe everything you see, read or hear. In fact maybe just don't believe anything at all.

My feet are cold, but I'm sure it's just a figment of my imagination or an emotional response to the documentry on Polar Bears I'm watching. ;-)

Just for the record though other than what I've learned on this site, which is very confusing at times, everything I know about the supernatural I saw on TV.

That's pretty lame, I know.

Everything I know about the supernatural was from my first book in the sixth
Grade, after my experience with sleep parilisis.

All the stuff that became fad, and then faded conflicted intensly with the
Texts I was reading. Nandor Fodor being my favorite.

I watch the UFO.. Conspiracy.. Then Ghost cycles..

looking back to the Parlor days, and the many adaptations of those games
Along with Tabloid press, juicy gossip, mixed with no effort fixes for symptoms of living out of you means?Infomercials are not even as the medicine shows which they share a common denominator.

If there is something TV doesn't effect.. Dare I ask? What that is?

It is my personal belief that if people become interested in the supernatural because of television or fiction (or however they got interested) and then take the time to seek the truth, who are we to complain?

Sure, it can be annoying having to answer questions about fictional vampires because people think they are the reality, but education is the key - TV might be the starting point, but truth is the final point. I'm thankful every day for the welcome I received when I first stumbled upon the OVC, wondering what the heck was going on with me.

The influence of TV and the popular Media have an undeniably enormous effect on the Public's understanding of the supernatural... and most of that understanding is highly inaccurate and deliberately presented in the most sensationalistic manner they can imagine.

Around Halloween of this year, I caught a cable program on, of all places, the usually respectable National Geographic Channel. It was from their NGC series "Is It Real?" and attempted to explore the topic of ... Vampires. While they are to be congratulated for quite accurately explaining scientifically how primitive Slavic peoples came to embue the "vampire" with such traits as being "undead" and drinking blood (all the results of ignorance and superstition), yet I was shocked to hear a professor from a San Antonio college, a supposed expert in Slavic studies, erroneously describe the first-ever "vampire" in recorded history, Upir' Likhyj, as a "bloodthirsty Novgorodian prince", something he must have read on Wikipedia instead of actually having investigated, himself. As any self-respecting Slavic scholar would know well, the 11th Century Upir' Likhyj was an Eastern Orthodox Christian Priest and linguistics scholar to Prince Vladimir II, son of Yaroslav the Great.

Following this, despite having scientifically debunked the blood-drinking myth aspect of vampires, they then went right back to popular-culture imagery by interviewing supposed "real-life" vampires. Yep... you guessed it... Don Henrie.

We cannot forget that the Media's first and foremost purpose is to entertain... not tp educate.

- Upir'

TV doesn't have to be such a bad thing. You see a program, get interested in a topic, then research on the reality of it. No need to blame entertainment. Just blame ignorance of a person to call entertainment the reality.

Put ownership on people misconstruing fact, not what fills our lives with creativity and imagination.

When I find a person that adopts TVs presentation as factual, and then a person that has opened a book, it is obvious which is which.

A shallow person is obvious to those with a studied understanding of any subject. People becoming interested in something because of A TV show is
all in how they present themselves relative to the topic.

I think movies of hollywood today give our culture the false information of the supernatural, for hollywood has taken a myth or tale and now twisted it to make the adventure more exciting.

We see even on here some info brought here is the believe since it is in the movie, its true, alot of post are related the the tv and big screen info, war of vampire lycan, you name it. now with the twilight series out, we have came to vampires in the day.

Tv sets the way of for the loss of info of the real tale.

Sighs -

Well with all the new hollywood films and tv shows in refrence to the supernatural and magick, I think it just draws in the fluffy bunny types as a new "in thing"

Sure I watched charmed, supernatural, the dresden files (when it was on) and Practical magic ya its in my collection of movies. But I think that alot of it gives the wrong impression to people.

I do recall when the movie the craft came out, and how all of a sudden, witchcraft was the new cool fad, no one taking in the history, just going by what was in the movie.

I believe that TV and Movies may peak the interest of those who may not be familiar with these topics and may cause a spark of inquiry within them. It is up to them then to discover the truths that they seek. Anyone should know that media is motivated by profits rather than truth. However there are many who take it to be the truth.

A good example is The Harry Potter books and how some believed that she was referring to real magic and how that was a bad thing to be showing children and it was all BS. It is those who are ignorant or gullible that stirs up the pot to create controversy.

I think tv, movies and books are influencing alot about supernature , the rates do soar. The public loves what they are afraid to openly ask other on a personnal level. I prefer topics on the subjects on an investigative point however, rather than entertainment level.
Years ago you only saw shows arund holloween. Now you can view 24/7.

Other than vampire movies, the biggest influential genre is the occult.

When I was a student and practitioner of such dark trades.

When a movie like The Covenant, Little Witches, Harry Potter, Satan's School for Girls, Blair Witch Project, and etc.

You would here all these tween goths, punkers, and even some preps whispering to eachother about performing "rituals".

I became the pinnacle of such allure.

My circle and I. Actual practitioners who were my friends and mentors at the time. Were in a clearing in the woods when a bunch of giggling girls who claimed to be "The Sisters of Amedea" spotted us. They told ALL the "secret societies" at school. I was the "real deal", and they adored me.

I hated it, I didn't claim to be the real anything, and shunned such notions, and told them those girls didn't see me that night.

I was glad when that trend was over.........

People get to many conceptions and preconceived notions and fantasies, illusions of grandjure, to study such things and be told or taught otherwise.

I think it gives us a whole reference frame from which we think about things. Show, movies and books give us names, cultures and characters that we can assign to the supernatural world.
