Where Vampirism is not a religion, some of us who do practice magick may call upon deities who might be considered vampiric. Other than Sekhmet can anyone think of any deities, male and or female who has vampiric traits?

I have the perfect one, the Hindu goddess Kali (or Kali-Ma in her more vindictive aspects). Usually you will find her represented as a fearsome woman with 4 arms, sometimes standing on her mate Shiva. She's been portrayed as beautiful and fearsome, sometimes with black skin, fangs, a garland of skulls, and fetuses for earings.
It is said that she was a beautiful goddess, who was inturupted while praying by 1,000 (or 10,000 depending on who tells the story) deamons. In her rage she devoured the deamons and drank their blood. Henceforth, deamons fear even the mention of the name Kali.

Another story says that she was fighting a ferriocous deamon that evey time she struck him, the drops of blood would create 1000 deamons. To prevent this, she tore off strips of her dress and strangled the deamon, and drank his blood to prevent the creation of more deamons. This gave rise to an interesting cult known as the Thugee (root of the word "thug"). The Thugee would find their victims along the roads, sometimes disguising themselves as religious pilgrims. They would strangle their victims , who were wealthy merchants and bridal parties, and bury the bodies. When the english took over India they wiped them out, putting them into situations such as concentration camps along with their families for "retraning".

I have a few Kali staues, some are beautiful, with blue skin and the toung stuck out for blood, and fangs. Some are hideous. She is still revered by Hindus world wide, as a creator and destroyer. They say that if you cannot love Kali, as fearsome and hideous as she is, how can you truely be free?

I always personally wondered why the Thugs didn't believe in spilling blood, given the nature of the goddess they worshipped. However, I don't know too much about the matter.

Tiamat was also my ex's tarantula. ;)

I'ev always had a strong tie to the Morrigan, as well as the Love/War goddess more associated with felines.... whose name now escapes me since I've been up for nearly 14 hours.

The following is a most fascinating article about Tiamat. As you will read, she was part of creation, though not in a pleasant way for her.

Article follows:

Tiamat
by Micha F. Lindemans
In Babylonian myths, Tiamat is a huge, bloated female dragon that personifies the saltwater ocean, the water of Chaos. She is also the primordial mother of all that exists, including the gods themselves. Her consort is Apsu, the personification of the freshwater abyss that lies beneath the Earth. From their union, saltwater with freshwater, the first pair of gods were born. They are Lachmu and Lachamu, parents of Ansar and Kisar, grandparents of Anu and Ea.

In the creation epic Enuma elish, written around 2000 BCE, their descendants started to irritate Tiamat and Apsu so they decided to kill their offspring. Ea discovered their plans and he managed to kill Apsu while the latter was asleep. Tiamat flew into a rage when she learned about Apsu's death and wanted to avenge her husband. She created an army of monstrous creatures, which was to be led by her new consort Kingu, who is also her son. Eventually, Tiamat was defeated by the young god Marduk, who was born in the deep freshwater sea.

Marduk cleaved her body in half, and from the upper half he created the sky and from the lower half he made the earth. From her water came forth the clouds and her tears became the source of the Tigris and the Euphratus. Kingu also perished, and from his blood Marduk created the first humans.

"The Deep" (Hebrew tehom) at the beginning of Genesis derives from Tiamat.

Vlad your posts are always so informative and i enjoy that when scanning through various posts, there is always one person whos style or thought process grabs me and does not let go.. you would be one of these individuals and there are at least 2 others on here ,they know who they are,but what i want to reply to is referencing your post in general and its a simple question actually:

How come everytime i hear the name Tiamat spoken the entity names chutulu is right there along side of her? is chutulu a deity of some proportion vampiric or otherwise? Ive not studied alot about Tiamat or Chutulu but i hear random things and it makes me think :)

Batchyld, Cthulhu, or Ktulu, is the slayer of Tiamat in the Necronomicon. It's an old book, perhaps you've heard of it. It also has no historical relevance whatsoever and the name itself was invented by H.P. Lovecraft in the early 1900s.

A good resource to read would be the PSEUDOMONARCHIA DAEMONUM by Johann Weyer which details sixty-nine of the classic known demons, many of which hold vampyric traits. Also helpful information on the conjuring of these demons (which, to some, are considered gods). The book itself is somewhat hard to find, although I'm sure one can find it on Amazon.com, but there are wonderful online excerpts, as well as hoardes of assorted occult information, at http://www.esotericarchives.com/
Hope this was helpful!

It seems to me that becoming a vampire would require a small amount of magic despite the scientific aspect...gah I'm so bad with words. I don't think magic is always so tied with religion. Magic is tied to faith and you can have faith in many different things.

Very interesting topic. I don't think Lilith would be a deity (anymore than we would consider Adam or Eve deities) According to legend she was simply the first woman, not Eve, that God made. Or so I hear. I am intrigued and will do some research.

if you mean gods that drank or recived blood as scarafice then most harvest deities qualify and the christian god Jehovah also as he preferred Able's scarafice of blood and meat to Cain's of plants and grains . also look to the later Aztec and Mayan pantheon for human scarafice

Also there is a being called a puntianak of the Malay folklore. A female spirit that feeds on human blood, particularly women giving birth. She will wait for her victems along a loney road or at the edge of a forest and lure them by taking on the form of a woman. Anyone foolish enough to approach her would be devoured. It was also believed that she could only drink blood in her natural form. Which was an ugly human fage with desheveled hair and protruding intestines, but no body. she would fly through the air with the intestines trailing behind her like a kite. Not so pretty.

Then there is Zagam the demon of forgers of money. he could turn water into wine, gold and lead into silver, and oil into blood. He had huge bat wings and a bulls head. He fed upon human blood.

Civatateo: In Aztec mythology, the Civatateo were vampires. They were noblewomen who died during childbirth and, after returning to the land of the living, stalked travelers and haunted temples. They were shriveled and pale.

The cihuateteo were the most vampiric of all the aztec deities. They originated from women who died in childbirth. They had once been mortal, had struggled with the child, and had succeeded in holding it until both died in the struggle. Thus, they attained the status of warrior. As demonic figures, the cihuateteo very much resembled such other vampiric figures as the lamiai of ancient Greece or the langsuyar of Malaysia. The cihuateteo wandered the night and attacked children, leaving them paralyzed or otherwise diseased. They held counsel with other cihuateteos at local crossroads. Food offerings were placed at crossroads in structures dedicated to the cihuateteos so that they would gorge themselves and not attack the children; also, if the vampiric beings remained at the crossroads until morning, they would be killed by the sunlight. In recent years the cihuateteos have been described as having white faces and chalk-covered arms and hands. They wear the costume of Tlazolteotl, the goddess of all sorcery, lust, and evil.

Someone said Hecate i hate to correct anyone or step on toes but, Hecate was not vampiric but, She is also seen as mother of a group of goddesses called Empusae who were vampiric and demon-like. There is alot on the web about her. She is a well liked goddess one i have study. As for Empusae this is what i found on them hope it helps in some way. Empusa was a specter (a ghost-like spirit) in ancient Greek mythology. Empusa devoured and frightened travelers that were found near its sight. It showed no mercy when travelers crossed its path. Empusa was feared by the people that were near its town, and had the reputation of being evil.

As i said sorry to step on toes

Now in that in some aspects of energy in regards to dieties there have been some accounts that Gods or Goddesses need the worship of their respective following in order to sustain themselves.

In that they prayers, rituals, sacrifices and all sorts of other worship are designed to focus thought towards these higher level beings couldn't one postulate that all deities have vampyric traits?

The most unknown deity of normal citizens throughout the world would be; Lilith "Dark Mother" or Lilithu who is mentioned three times throughout even the Christian bible and is documented several times within many of prechristian and even known paganistic belief systems. She is the first wife of "Adam" and the first humanlike creation of the christian G-D. If you wish to research her history I suggest finding true books on Ancient Sumeria.

okay, i started a thread about Osiris being the Egyptian Father of Vampires or not. I am sure but not positive about him being the Father. Someone stated they think it was Set. I have to disagree because from what i know Set killed Osiris and when Isis brought him back he had to drink blood to survive. Correct me if I am wrong or amplify my beleive of Osiris being a Vampiric Deity.......

There is a Native American story about a Medicine Man crossing over Jumlin (sp?) from the Shadow World into the living in exchange for healthy children.

Jumlin possessed the spirit of Medicine Man heart, soul etc, and used his body to feed.

I know that once crossed back into the living, he fed on the blood of animals, then males and ultimately females and his strength grew.
