There have been more than 2,000 recorded sightings over 250 years, it featured in an early episode of The X Files and it's so famous there's an ice hockey team named after it.

Folkloric stories tend to explain something that is already there, rather than being the reason for its existence

But here in Britain, hardly anyone has heard of one of America's most famous cryptids - or undiscovered species - the Jersey Devil.

Most of the sightings of the Devil - one of them reportedly by Napoleon's brother, Joseph Bonaparte - have been in the Pine Barrens, a huge span of dark, desolate woods in the south of New Jersey.

Many describe it as a winged goat-like creature with blood red eyes and standing anywhere between three and six feet tall.

Charred remains
Yet, despite having been spotted as many times as Bigfoot, no one has ever photographed the Jersey Devil and the closest anyone has come to proving its existence was the finding of the charred remains of an unidentifiable creature in the 1950s.

The myth of the Devil has its origins deep in American folklore. According to legend, in 1735, a woman called Mother Leeds was pregnant with her 13th child.

So painful was the birth that she said it may have been the Devil's spawn and promptly gave birth to a hugely deformed child that disappeared up the chimney and went on to haunt the woods.

While the existence of a local healer called Deborah Leeds who had a disabled child has been proven, any rational person would put the rest of the story down to salacious gossip.

Russell Juelg of the Pinelands Preservation Alliance has been leading Devil Hunts in the area twice a month for the past eight years but has still to come across the beast.

He says: 'I have not had the classic Jersey Devil encounter. You do get lots of sounds that you cannot figure out but I prefer to attribute those to the abundant wildlife.

'The closest I have ever come is when I met three high-school boys who had just had an encounter and I have never seen anyone more terrified.'

People's opinions in the state are divided over the Jersey Devil.

Juelg says: 'Some people shrug it off as being the product of fertile imaginations. But there are also people who would be extremely angry if you doubted their word about a sighting.'

Rational explanations for the myriad sightings range from it being a sandhill crane to a species of rare African bat, hypsignathus monstrosus.

Sightings of the Jersey Devil reached a climax in 1909 when hundreds of people claimed to see it from January 16 to 23, yet many of these are now believed to be part of an elaborate real estate hoax.

Richard Freeman of Britain's Centre For Fortean Zoology has a different take on the myth.

He says: 'The term Jersey Devil has been applied to any weird sighting in the Pine Barrens, from the classic description to Bigfoot. The talk of it being the spawn of the devil is a case of chicken and the egg. Folkloric stories tend to explain something that is already there, rather than being the reason for its existence.

'There have been sightings since way before the Leeds myth, even by Native Americans. The name given to the Pine Barrens by the Lenni Lenape tribe is Popuessing, or Place Of The Dragon, so it could well be some unknown reptile.'

the above is in the METRO newspaper's ( london ) website.

i've been living in jersey all my life.....and all i ever heard was possible sightings of the jersey devil or what it might possibly look like. No real photographs but sketches of what people think they saw. Who knows if it's true or if its a myth. I'm not even sure if The Jersey Devil made it into the book called Wierd NJ. It may have but i do recall something about the pine barrins. i don't think we'll ever know unless someone actually takes a real life picture of it.

And after all these years since what the early 1900's do people really think that the "Jersey devil" is still alive?

true there's no way of proving or disproving that the jersey devil exists or not. there are a few places that have their tale of being haunted like a street or like the pine barriens/jersey devil. I'm sure that other States have their thing or along the lines of being haunted by something just like the Jersey Devil (i could be wrong) but it's a possibility. We just dont hear about it......The Jersey Devil is just something has been going on for ages and has not been let go.

DamnedFreak, I've done things like that before. Not lookin for the Jersey devil itself. But gone being a bit curious of some dark alley or haunted street where someone has been strucked by a car and killed and the street being haunted. Or even gone to a bldg where its been haunted by insane people (i guess u would say an asylum).....one being not far from me. Then again....who wouldn't go looking for something like that. lol

Well I do see your point if it has nor been seen for so long how do we know it still exsists..

Apart from the one fact being left to scrutinsation.

If there is one beast it has to come from somewhere...So unless it was or is an endangered species we can safely surmise that there is more than one and that it is inevitably possible that the creature is mating.

I've always loved and still do love stories like this one. I'd love to go on one of those tours or go exploring by myself or with a few friends, because a big part of me just loves the myth and mystery about it.

On the other side (my more logical thinking side, science based thinking side) my thoughts on stories like these are that it may be an undiscovered/undocumented species of animal, or a mutated form of an excisting one.

But untill there is any proof of what this may be, I really love and enjoy these myths, and I think that that more sentimental part of me secretly hopes there will never be any real prove, so that the mystery may live on :)

i mean i'm not saying that the jersey devil exists or doesn't exist.

seriously after all these years someone would think that there would be actual documentation that it does or doesn't. I suppose it would be up to someone to believe that something like the jersey devil exists. A person may or may not want to believe but that is totally up to them.

it could be a true thing that the jersey devil does exist or it may be a myth. we may never know unless someone happens to come across the Jersey Devil itself.

Growing up in Massachusetts, I too have heard stories, but nothing more than stories. We(those from Mass.) have our own demons and spirits, being that Salem, Mass was where the some the most famous witch trials and killing were. We even have a place called Purgatory Chasm (supposidly a chasm in the earth without an end or bottom). There are so many supposed and unexplained things on this earth from either this time or times past ,it is very hard to say what is fact and what is fiction...or what is a little of both.

As far as I'm concerned, all myths and legends are, at least in some part, based on facts. The myth of the Vampire for instance :) There probably IS something to it.

Hahaha!
Its about time!
I've done my own research on this in the past, so I'm feeling a bit special right now :)

Although, I don't think a hunt would do anything. I believe that if you wanted to find the beast, you would have to find some way to summon it to you.

How exactly, is beyond me.

yes, i agree. In my experience and research the Jesey Devil is not one to be caught by a bystander. A hunt would prove naught. The beast has been around long enough to learn the act of evasion.

i just recently learned about the jersey devil when i started looking things up on the mothman... i think its very creepy..

and one time.. i have no idea what it was but me and my cousin where riding our bikes through the woods by the campgrounds we camped at when we were little and all of a sudden there was this loud shreik. and i have no clue what it was but it wasnt a person.. and it serisously scared me and i still get scared thinking about it... but i live in ohio and we dont have many myths or anything like the jersey devil....

But i did say something to my parents when we got back and they told me things have happened to them in those woods too... and what they told me scared me more than the noise i heard... and i dont know if they were telling us the truth but i know what i heard scared the hell outta me...

This myth and many others fascinate me. I wont say I dont believe in them merly because the proof isnt there because any proof people do bring forward on myths is always beaten down anyway. I will go by my own beliefs and the many many things of unexplained nature that I have encountered in my 35 years.

I used to live in the Pine Barrens of Jersey, I love the Leeds Point legend. Both the Ice hockey team and the Air force fighter squadron out of Nafeck AFB in jersey are named for the Devil.
On Halloween for many years a group of us went in search of any signs of him. He is out by Brigantine supposedly, and it is also the site of brigantine Castle which mysteriously burt to the ground in the 80's. There once was a women who lived in leeds. She had 15 children and was pregnant againso she cursed the unborn child. The jersey devil was born, he killed his family and now stalks the pine barrens. Love to see this post.

There have been many stories about the Jersey Devil through the years... It could be true to an extent I believe, just like the Mothman. A lot of people put their own little "twist" to the stories but to hear about the actual legend and where he came from is pretty cool... Creepy but cool... Great post!!!

I believe that "The Jersey Devil" falls under the same category as "The Loch Ness Monster" and others like that...some people seen it, but they don`t know what they`ve seen...it is believed that it is a prehistoric creature, a descendant of the dinosaurs...The representations I`ve seen are, some of them, pure exagerations!

Quite possible. If the creatures been seen so many times they should all have around the same description of it. But ehn again maybe some people just wanted attention or the darkness and shadows messed with their vision.

being from New Jersey i have heard this story a million times along with any other crazy story we've come up with. we don't talk about it much where i live since i'm in central Jersey and not near the Pine Barrens but we have decided among my friends that we do want to go and check it out for ourselves. in my opinion it's probably albinos or something that just love scaring people away from their home and love to keep the myth alive, but we'll never know at this point.

There was a very bad movie made a few years ago about the Jersey Devil, but it was cheesy and stupid, and didn't really have much to do with the legend. I'm from PA, but close enough to NJ to hear the legends growing up. I've driven past the Pine Barrens and seen some weird things, but had no inclination to actually hang around and see what's really there.

I actually heard that someone is working on a new movie which is supposed to be more true to the legend of the Jersey Devil.....guess we'll have to wait and see....

I have been out on a "search" for the jersey devil. What my group found has truely comfirmed my belief that he/she is really in exsistance.

It was dark, we had researched and found going at sundown would possibly give us a better chance. So we used our night vison cameras and went out in search of the jersey devil.

We were in a group of about 6, 3 per team. We went first to the old foundation of the home that the jersey devil had been born in. We got no leads.

It was when we atempted to leave the site that something happened. My friends dog, Damon started to howl and growl. There was movement in the tree above us.

My friend had a flash light and started to shine it at the tree. all of a sudden there was a black shape. we couldn't make out the features but it had a human like carriage. Thats when the girl with the light freaked and dropped it.

It went dark again, the dog was now whining and pulling at his leash. Thats when we saw the red eyes that we had heard about from so many people.

Three members of the group bolted. Along with the dog. I was determined to get footage, but in my haste, and
incapability to use electronic devices. I droped the camera.

It was soon after that the trees started to shake violently. Thats when the last of our group fled to our cars and ran.

Thats why i believe in the jersey devil. I've seen him/her with my own eyes, And i think thats the only way anyone can know for sure of the creatures exsistance.

I've never personally seen or know known anyone who has seen old JD and I've leved right across the river from Jersey almost my entire life. There are, however places in Jersey that I've been to that could easily hide such a creature.

On a funny note ( though some may find it cruel) I was coming home from my sister's house one night and the kids were in the truck. They are 11 and 8. After making a hideous, goatlike noise, I told them that if they ever heard something like it, they were near the Jersey Devil. I immediately pulled over and went into a store. I locked the doors to the truck and watched them from the window, seeing their heads whipping around as they watched the darkness behind the truck. I knew they were a little scared. I slipped out of the store, walked quietly around the back of the truck.... approached from the passenger side, and then proceeded to make the goatlike sound. They looked about, trying to see what it was and wham, I jumped up, banged the side of the truck adn was met with expressions of absolute horror. We had a good laugh and my kids have vowed to get me back. I can only imagine what is coming.

One of my relatives had a farm in that territory && he swore up and down that the Jersey Devil was haunting him. i dunno, but according to the family, he'd find chickens and all his farm animals dead in places they shouldnt of been. kinda strange, but, like i said, i wasnt relle born then, so i wouldnt know.

I grew up on the edge of the Pines. I've done my share of walking through the Barrens. The Jersey Devil is actually the least of your worries if you go deep enough in. Never saw it myself although there have been many times I was sure I was being watched or followed.

i have had it in my mind for years to get proof.when i get money and a car,i'm taking a few people to go searching for it.i'm hoping to be able to camp in the barrens for a few days, hopefully no one is easily spooked. i want pictures, and video recordings, and sound recordings.i truly believe something like this may be out thee somewhere.

also,i think maybe it's not just new jersey. there is a patch fo woods near my house. i'm sure everyone here is familiar enough with newborn deer to be able to comprehend what i'm going to say. if not,i'll explain.bucks rub their antlers on trees to get the velvetty covering off. i'm sure everyone has seen in the woods a spot on a tree where the bark is in tatters or is gone completely. i was in the woods, towards dusk. i looked up,and i saw that. about 50 feet in the air,on a pretty old tree, was a spot about 5 feet in elngth and maybe 1 1/2 feet wide. no other tree had a mark like that anywhere. the bark was in tatters,as if a deer was rubbing against it.or as if a creature had dug it's claws into the bark. no animal that could get that high could possibly damage a tree that much. and as an added note,a man on a bicycle appeared out of nowhere with a light on his bike.the surrounding area was covered with branches, twigs, rocks and dried leaves. and yet i didn't hear him at all, didn't even notice him until he almost knocked me over.
