Does love undo the 'immortal' vampire...it's been used before as fodder for stories and film but perhaps there is a ring of truth to the idea in a larger sense.

The immortal vampire. The idea that you could live for a longer than normal time...possibly millennia. Passing by family and friends. One could see how disconnected from the world you might become. At first it would surely aid in your survival. You become a ghost in the machine. It would make it easier to stay in the shadows when no-one is looking for you. It would make it easier to prey upon the world when you remain so separate from it.

Should love never again rear it's maddening head, one could see life becoming wearisome. One could begin to understand a real and terrifying loneliness or at least a very strong sense of ennui about the prospect of never forming a solid connection to the living again.

Should love shine its light upon the shadows, it is just as possible to see it creating the ultimate and terrible decision. To embrace and therefore subject your love to the torment of eternity and possible madness as well or to let go and watch this person age and eventually die.

So while we may argue the nature of the vampire (real or fiction, immortal or human, beast or evolutionary step). Vampires are by nature, disconnected from the rest of normal society. Does this disconnection ultimately doom the vampire either in the loss of separation from normal humanity or in the choices when seeking to bring someone into that secret world?

Deathnitegirl - Is love ever a choice? Or are you pointing to a third option for the vampire to overcome the disconnection?

Vampires are only disconnected from the rest of the world, even as HLVs (human, living vampires), because they -choose- to be so.

Having known what I was at a relatively young age, I have learned to use my talents to somewhat better myself, and stay connected.

I flirt with those I don't feel have any strong ties to energy (in the psychic vampire sense, mind you), and I certainly take part in activities outside of 'the vampirebox,' as it were.

We all can make sacrifices if we feel it appealrs to us, but it does not appeal to everyone.

To "exist" without "living" is surely worthless?

Love is a very powerfull force which can make even the shortest time last an eternity, but as equaly make eternity pass in the blink of an eye.

I wonder if Einstein was in love when he came up with the theory of Relativity!

The loss of connection with the world around you and the issolation this brings was a very poinient thread of the Highland Films and Series.

vampires are not connected to the things around them merely because they have gone up a step in the ladder of evolution. where we are weak they are strong. where we are slow, they are fast... and so on and so on..

the one thing that a vampire who spreads the vampirism around has in common with all the others who do the same is that they choose to have this as thier life... and they can't see why anyone would say no to the Dark Gift

Even the fictionalized characters of Queen of the damned show a vampire going out on his own making his own "choice" to be amonsgt mortals and tell them who he is, where others are battling to keep the secret, in life it's the same. Choosing to fall in love is also a choice we make in life, we can choose to not let our feelings matter to us or choose to embrace them. Love is just another choice in our life, and if u choose to be alone and seperated from the rest of society how will u fall in love with someone you have never met?

As was already stated - and stated very well - the vampire as well as any of us, have choices, if you choose to fall in love, then you have the choice to leave, or to 'embrace' the love and be with that one. I would choose the love.

I think I see what Felix is trying to say. In the case of the fictional immortal vampire to love is immediately to force a lifestyle of depression, hatred, and regret upon yourself because either choice is a bitter one. To always deny yourself love ahead of time is also a bitter choice, and over the years would weigh heavily upon anyone.

Vulash - Very much a point I was making. But even beyond the literary vampire, does not a psy-vamp, feel disconnected from regular mankind? Part of it but not completely part of it?

Nara - you flirt or take part in activities outside the vampire box, but do you feel part OF those activities or more like an outside observer. Is there a disconnect?

In my opinion I may be wrong but just here me out. well... I think because of their "immortality" vampires are naturally disconnected from so called "normal" human beings, is because they feel they cannot relate to them so thier for a vampire finding love with a human and keeping it is next to immpossible.

I'd say it largely depends on the vampire's motives and desires. Some may not do well... some will accept a new lover every century or so.... others will give up early. Only yime will tell

I don't think it does. While some people are more detached then others everyone has the same basic desires - and we are talking about thousands of years. It would surface over time. If they became something that completely lost those desires then teh question has already been answered.

I can't speak about psi vamps at all - so I'm just speaking theoretically and for fun about immortals if they existed.

I dont believe just cause an immortal vampire may fall in love that they will loose there immortalilty,I just cant see that happening, its a choice weither or not one wishes to fall in love or live a life in total and utter sorrow and misery, but its still possibly to have found the love of your life but feel a since of being surronded by lonliness and misery, thats just my opinion on it though....not everyone may agree im sure

it is of interest to view how many out there, mention the word ~chioce~ as if you see that a Vampyre has the chemical make up of such emotions.

those that can read ito this shall further understand as well, how a Vampyre can sit by and watch so many of close human relationships vanish opon death.

cheers

I geuss it would depend on the person.. or immortal. ( Personally I do not believe anything is truly " immortal " For everything begins from somewhere and it will end eventually no matter how much a prolonged " life " It is given. )

Love is a confusing emotion to me because I dont make any sense to myself when I feel it.It is overpowering in a few ways and makes me react non rationally at times. In Vampiric mode love is totally futile in my view. I only see a memory of it and it becomes untangible.

Lots of great insight here people. Thank you.

I realize that many perceive that love would not be a strong enough force to cancel out that fiery will to live. I also understand that many are very capable (for the moment) to enjoy the slight disconnection that coincides with being something different.

I do however feel that love and on a greater level connection to our peers is something that we need in order to give us aim or purpose in life. I'm not suggesting that we all need to fawn over someone in order to live. What I'm saying is that often (always maybe) our experiences are only savored when shared with friends or loved ones (people who appreciate our own joys or satisfactions). Imagine that you can do or enjoy years of wonderful carefree experiences but you have no one to talk to about them. It seems a bit like going to an amusement park after it's closed. No lines and no crowds, but no one to share it with. Still fun? How about 10+ years of that...how about 50+ years?

I believe that love...or even a basic physical connection is needed by any living ( or undead) creature in order to be content with thier surroundings.
"Love is not love, it is the forever fixed mark" (Shakespear Sonnett 116)
We all need some kind of love in order to keep ourselves grounded.

But can't that same need actually seperate you from your life, your survival instincts or the goals that keep you going. The vampire that can't say no to a few more hours and winds up as ash in his/her love's tears. The artist who forsakes driving energies to be with a love and slowly dies from it.

But is there a more noble reason to forsake one's muse? Is there a more noble reason to forget one's self?
But before your question or mine can be answered, one must first answer the question...what is love?

Aridai voices this very solidly, and I agree... it's all choices... mortal, mundane, were, magickal, or vamp... it all comes down to choices. We CHOOSE to voice our existence or not, and spend a lifetime with a mortal or not..... Love doesnt let us choose how we feel... or who we fall for... but I cannot say it would be strong enough to sever what you are.... maybe stop you from paying attention to basic needs... but that is true of humans too.... and again, it is always a personal choice

Then again wolfcry, it may also be a sort of metaphor for a vampire who has given his life at the end of his loved ones mortal thread. Sort of, cast aside immortality in a glorious bath of PAINFUL sunlight...

Ah..Love .... immortal in itself.
The cause of this worlds greatest extacy and rapture.
Also, the cause of ultimate pain, sorrow, misery, and anguish.
Mortals and immortals alike are powerless under this unrelenting spell.
Love, she giveth and she taketh away.
Try as we might to avoid, withdrawl, and receed this heartache...it will find everyone somewhere, sometime.
But after the first true love, a millinieum cannot erase the passion, desire and fullfillment two kindred spirits can feel. It longs so for love's embrace.
So to what end do we deny this pleasure? Surely the pain must come, but oh sweet rapture.
The heart cannot deny such things.
It is the order of things. Yin and Yang, dark and light, good and evil, pleasure and pain...a perfect ballance.
Though one love is lost to you, you have never lost love. Find love as often as you can for pain will consume us all from time to time. Embrace the happiness and feel no regret for lovers past, they raise you up and make you who you are.

Fall in love whenever you possibly can.

~Goddess~

Most would argue survive is the first emotion and strongest instinct.

Eventually in some cases, the needs not to be alone overwhelms even that.

Question is, can a vampire go back to being human and mortal ?
