Some paranormal researchers believe that poltergeist are manifestations brought on by the person during a very stressful or traumatic time in their life. The stress can trigger unexplained mental abilities such as psychokinesis.

Psychokinesis (PK) - sometimes referred to as telekinesis or mind over matter - is the ability to move things or otherwise affect the property of things with the power of the mind. Of psychic abilities, true psychokinesis is one of the rarest. Few have been able to demonstrate this ability, and even those demonstrations are highly contested by the skeptics. Case Studies

A pretty famous tale of this is the Bell Witch. There has been a movie recently released about it calledAn American Haunting. Mind you the movie is based on a true story.

Now in the movie at the end it is lead to believe the traumatic situation the girl dealt with caused a poltergeist that not only harmed her but her father as well. This manifestation smacked her, lifted her off the ground, threw her around, and became very violent to others that entered the room. It harmed her father due to the fact he caused the trauma. Now, I am just using the movie for an example since some people may have seen it. I am not looking for movie reviews here.

So here is my questions.

1. Do you think poltergeists are manifestations of the mind?
2. Do you think they exist?
3. Have you ever experienced one?
4. Do you know someone that has experienced one?

Now before you answer I have an experience to share.
At one point in my life I was going through a very traumatic time for me. A very volatile relationship. During the first few months of living at the house nothing happened. I was at peace with myself and my surroundings. Then things turned for the worse. That is when it became extremely violent. I had dreams of a little girl that "lived" in my house. Strange things would happen. The blinds would move as though someone would run their finger down them, you could hear a little girl talk sometimes at night, my roommates felt someone touch them, tug their blankets, poke at them, etc.

My dreams were very vivid of her. She was small with blonde pigtails, small white folded over socks, with maryjanes, pink bows in her hair with a pink ribbon around her white frilly dress. I remember one time being on the phone and hearing a little girl say something. I asked them to repeat themselves. They had not said anything. I remember not feeling like I was "outside" myself. I remember feeling like the little girl. I looked down and was outside on a side walk. I was her. I knelt down and seen and penny and said out loud I found a penny I am going to keep it. A few moments later I was myself again. The person on the phone was calling my name. I looked down I had a penny in my hand. My roommate sitting next to me was in shock. I asked her what happened. She said I bent down, picked up the penny, and a little girls voice came out of my mouth.

There was also a time that we had a hole in the ceiling so we patched it up with some puddy. The puddy was still wet when we all went to bed. When we awoke the next morning there was a perfect finger mark in it. Everyone had taken turns on the chair and putting their finger in the mark. No one's finger fit the indentation but mine.

It was a VERY strange experience..

Okay now the questions again...

1. Do you think poltergeists are manifestations of the mind?
2. Do you think they exist?
3. Have you ever experienced one?
4. Do you know someone that has experienced one?

1. Do you think poltergeists are manifestations of the mind?
Most probabbly.
2. Do you think they exist?
Yes cause of my expirinces.
3. Have you ever experienced one?
Yes.
4. Do you know someone that has experienced one?
No.

This is my expirince:

I was sleeping at night and suddenly woke up.My bed was shaking and felt like there was something under the bed.I punched the bed for twice until it stopped shaking.First I tought it was my bro who was behaving like an idiot as usual...but the door was locked so how could he enter?I was scared and went to look under the bed and saw nothing.

Then after that expirience I began to have sleep paralysis often and after some months I began to have paranormal encounters in my room and ghost exirinces in a certain ''hunted'' place.

For a whole year I heard footsteps in my room during the night, saw shadows in the mirror at night and had other strange encounters during the night and day in the house mostly in my room and once my brother expirienced the same stuff as me...

Referring to the bell witch event you mentioned, John Bell actually died! Around 1817 (not sure on the date)
John and his daughter Betsy began experiencing violent activity, she was slapped by the spirit and had had her hair pulled...meanwhile John bore more violent attacks having his shoes pulled off his face beaten and he even suffered from violent convulsions. The geist then developed a voice and said that it was a witch in the end the events proved to be too much for John and he died.

Around about the end of the 1800's the society of physical research was formed, it was then that serious alternative theories about paranormal cases were put forward.
Their research into the poltergeist phenomenon made it apparent that in most of the paranormal cases young children were involved with a large percentage of teenage girls at the centre of poltergeist hauntings. Even though many believed that the children were a source of energy used by the spirit to power its violent activities, others began to argue that it was the girls themselves who were responsible! And...with the Freud theories being all the rage by the turn of the century, scientists began to see these forces as a form of sponteneous Pyschokinesis or!.. the unconcious manefestation of sexual energy.

There was a case back in the 70's in England To peggy harper and her four children they baegan to experence strange events in their house. The childrens beds shook all night, chairs moved across the floor and loud knocks were heard behind the walls. The police were called in along with a medium and a vicar and all of them witnessed a chair fly across the room but *Shockingly* they couldn't stop the "Spirit". The British newspaper The daily mirror caught many of the events on camera including 11 year old janet harper floating mid air while asleep, the press soon became victims of the geists energy, cameras suffered faults films jammed and flashes drained of power. The little girl Janet, was checked in a psychiatric ward, when she was there the events stopped, and when she came back they started up again!!

I was actually writing an article on this if you havent already figured it out :p
I myself am not sure either way whether the events are actual Poltergeists spirits etc; Or some kind of unreleased emotions finding an unconcious outlet through psychokinesis!!

Another reason not to have kids;
Would be scary though if it was the latter, don't shout at your kids you'll find yourself getting beaten in the face by an invisible entity!! And be sure they masturbate frequently :s

Interesting questions.

Yes, I belive that a traumatic experience can give unknown psycic powers or abilities, a manifestation of the mind, on the other hand I do believe they exist because I had one encounter.

I was told about a place in A small town norh of Aarhus, the town I live in, in Denmark. As kids we used to joke about a house that had been deserted and noone would even consider buying it.

It belonged to an elderly, slightly odd, gentleman who was accused of exposing himself to children.. he died but his spirit remained in the house, and even when he was alive he did not like company.

So one night I took a dare to go into the house and investigate it. I brought along a friend of mine to make sure I was not cheating, and as we went up to the first floor, someone or someting pushed me hard so I hit the wall.. I could not see anyone, I thought it was my friend playing games, but when I opened a door it slammed right back in. I must admit I was a bit scared, and I never went into that house again.

I think some poeple are getting poltergeist confused with non violent hauntings.

Poltergeist are VIOLENT spirits. THese are not the one's that just move your stuff. They throw it against the wall and smack you around a bit.

They thrive off making the person/ other person scared.

When my roommates got scared 'she' got stronger. She would sometimes throw little things.

They are extrememly violent and not fun to deal with like the ghost that move things to and fro.

I just wanted to see what a seasoned pro on the site would post.

The brain has different powers at different stages of ages. If there is a trend in the powers of the young to have certain powers, then whatever happens in their brains at the time must be scrutinized.

I know geist means God in german, I don't know what Polter means.

I've never experienced a poltergeist haunting....the closest that has come to it was at a house we lived in many years ago. I was in school at the time. A nine year old boy had died there (we found that out later). First we would see this tiny moth like thing flitting n the other room, and it would vanish when we switched off the lights....then began the sound of pebbles hitting the windows of the house (and there were many) all night....first we thought it was some prankster...but we'd never see anythign outside...

Actually poltergeist is put together of the two german words polter which means noisy, and geist that means ghost.

Poltergeist= noisy ghost.

These are known for their violence like throwing things at people and such.

But can also be caused by the mind. An example took place in a spanish restaurant many years ago. They hired a new servant, and since his arrival, whinebottles smashed themselves and the customers got hit by food, and glasses tipped of the shelf.

The owner suspected the new waiter and he fired him. The waiter said that this was the third job in less than a year where he was let go. After the waiter left, everything turned back to normal.

I think some of them could be credited to being manifestations of the mind, but I do very strongly believe that they exist. I have not been lucky enough to experience anything of the sort yet, but I'm sure some day. I do have a friend who is a "ghost hunter" and I don't see how it would be possible for her to make up all of the encounters she has had.

I'm pretty open to the possibility of both spirit and mental manifestations of polter's. I had to cleanse a friends house because of the whole burial site built over thing. His "house guest" was extremely violent. I actually had a plate thrown at my head during the cleansing....not cool =P but I think that just as a spirit can cause these things it would not be impossible for a living persons spirit to cause these as well.

Well Until I read your story i was sure in my own opinion that they were real manifistations purely from the dead. I have had alot of encounters...all have which either left me feeling that a "nice" spirit was around me..attended no harm..or pure evil! in which I had to get out of the vacinity to feel safe! But just like LiliththeRed said...If dead can cause things to happen why not the living!

interesting topic and I would answer yes to all of them but question 3. I have not experienced polterguiest before but have experienced "hauntings". In my last house I heard footsteps and voices at night. At a house I lived in before I heard footsteps in the attic, walking across the beams. They stopped right over where my bed was before I asked it to stop. The next noise I heard was what sounded like someone/thing sitting or more like plopping down on the beam. It was enough to make me stay awake for a majority of the night.

My family has had hauntings in homes before some violent some not violent but seriously freaky. I am of strong mind that polergeist is of the mind and not just the persons viewing or experiencing said phenomena. they are powered and or bolsered by our minds and EMOTIONS. yes Im loud but the thrive on them especialy fear and the more primal ones.
I tried an experiment by being nonemotional at home and letting all the repression out away from home and the poltergeist that had been there left or was powerless. (no more shutters landing on me in the middle of the night thank you very much.) didnt find out what it wanted though assuming it wanted anything at all.

I've had experiences that could be considered a poltergeist. This house we live in now has been thought to have been "haunted" by them. Things do move on their own. I have seen "someone" walk by the bedroom door on many occassions. It scares me a bit.... I've not woken Shanda when I see him/her. But that spirit makes a regular visit here. Usually it's very quiet and not very mischeivious. Poltergeist translates "mischeivious spirit" (german). Anyway... yes. I've seen, heard, and seen the effects of a poltergeist.

Okay so I have some VERY VERY crazy things going on in my house. It is getting worse. Especially on a full moon.

My house is not to old. It was built in the 50's by my great-grandparents. So nothing traumatic has ever happened here.

Off of the kitchen there is 3 steps that lead down into a utility room. This holds the washer, dryer, furnace, cupboards, and a few odds an ends. Nothing special.

There is a VERY mean, violent, and disturbing "thing" that is in that area. ONLY that area. It will watch you if you are in the kitchen or sitting in the living room. If you turn your back to this area, it will feel as though someone is rushing up behind you and breathing down your neck.

I had a friend spend the night. He and my best friend slept in the living room. It was a very hot night. He went to bed at 4. He kept waking up with the feeling someone was watching him. He swore he would see someone sitting in the chair.

I have also had the feeling while sleeping in the living room.

My best friend's brother came and spent the night. He told me he heard noises outside a livingroom window. I shrugged it off thinking it was something with the neighbors. My best friend came to me, the day after full moon, and told me she heard a noise that sounded like the grunt of a VERY large animal. She is not one to get spooked very easily but, that time she ran and jumped into bed and wouldn't move.

I know it's not a person that haunts the area. I have did everything to rid it. I have did spells, used sage, sandlewood, and even seasalt. It will leave for maybe a day. When it comes back. It let's itself be known.

Has anyone ever delt with something like this or known someone who has?

Are poltergeists a manfestation of the mind?

In my opinion...there is very good evidence to support that claim, yes. 17th century Doctor Robert Boyle was the first to take the idea of poltergeists seriously and begin an extensive study on them. His work was later picked up by Sir William Barett who began to put the possiblities of PK and poltergeists together. Citing that the evidence of "geists" on seemed to appear when the inflicted persons were present.
In the 1920 and 30s it was believed that sexual tension and conflicts during puberty might have been the cause of such unexplained activities.
By the 40s and 50s repressed anger and suppressed emotion were the new recognized cause. And by the late 50s, 47 reports done by JG Pratt and William G Roll of Duke University hypothesized that there were patterns involving "recurrent sponateous PK" when the person whom experienced the "haunting" was present but never when he/she was not.
D. Scott Rogo, a writer and researcher, propsed that a "poltergeist are activated by stressful situations, but the PK does not from the living person but rather is projected onto a non living being."
Therefor there is a possibility for both sides.

Do you think they exist?

I think all things are absolutely possible.

Have you experienced one?

The only evidence I have seen of a poltergeist type situation is the random opening and closing of doors, drawers, and throwing about of trash.

1. Yes and No
2. yes
3. yes
4. yes

I do believe that certain occurences do in fact take place due to tramatic stress, this is a almost proven fact, However as a Ghost Hunter and also growing up in a Haunted House I can say for a fact that real Polterngeists do exist. I have investigated claims made by individuals claiming to have been Haunted by a Poltergeist and some cases are legitimate.
The House I lived in , in Centreville Michigan was ripe with activity, doors would open and close, things would always get moved, I could hear a voice whispering my name in my ear while setting on the Toilet in the bathroom at times, you could here foot steps and see shadows and an occassional spirit form at the right moment and much more, prolly the worst exsperience I had with it was when I was 12 my mother had me run upstairs to get her coat to go to the store, she was going to buy me a hostess suzzie Q, so excited I ran up the stairs and grabbed her coat and upon my decent down the steps prolly about 5 steps down I felt something holding my foot like being tripped, I fell the whole length of the stairs and broke my right wrist.
We all where a very happy family despite the haunting so this was not associated with post trama occurences.

1. Do you think poltergeists are manifestations of the mind?
2. Do you think they exist?
3. Have you ever experienced one?
4. Do you know someone that has experienced one?

Yes, I do think they are manifestation of the mind.

Yes I do think they exist.

Never had any experience or know anyone that has.

What I always wondered and found interesting was that IF (and I say if because of the skeptics) this does have to do with a person's mind, why can't they do it all the time after triggering it once? Obviously some part of the brain has been opened. It just blows my mind that during this time, a part of the mind was opened only to be closed later and no one knows how or why.

i believe Poltergeist are real and yes i have experienced one. I do live in Tennessee and it is famous for the civil war, and there are a lot of old homes here. Before i moved out of my previous house it was haunted with a poltergeist. this house was built in the 1840's and was used as a hospital in the civil war which had a lot of deaths. Anyway one morning i had awoke to doors slamming things flying off of the shelves, and even having scratch marks in my back and chest i had soon found out that this was no ordinary house. things have been going on for 1 to 2 weeks straight and i was terrifyied. one of my friend let me borrow his video camera that same night he had spend he stayed over and set the camera up in my room. The next morning we looked over the tape and saw that things would move across my dresser and break it also caught numerous light patterns and shapes and then disappear in mid air. So thats why i think poltergeist are real and have the ability to do things humans can't.

Poltergeist if people believe in demons and spirits they can believe in these. my friend once encounterd one. but on the sience side they can be created by humans but the fact is the person would have to use a large part of the brain to do so. n on the sience side people only use 10% of the brain mostly anyway. so if sience can believe people can cause weird things that go on why cant sience believe somthing else is causing it?

Paranormla reserches have been able to Classify Poltergeist hauntings as above and beyond the normal, Classic haunting. To even get the name Poltergeist, the spirit has to exihibit certain traits, which are consistant with a "noisy" ghost. Generally, they include whispers, soft sounds, and barely recognizable scents.

The difference between those a poltergeist with those attributes and a Haunting, is that they progressively get worse. The manifestations will continually increase until they reach a climactic level, of physical touching, violent movement of objects, scratches, screaming "disembodied" voices, and the like.

The most unique aspect of poltergeists, it that they do not revolve around a single place(like traditional hauntings). Rather, they generally revolve around one person, and will FOLLOW the person, regardless of location. Any actual poltergeist haunting Recorded, shows that to be true for the most part.

I'm not trying to sound preachy, but I'd like to think I know a little something something about this subject, as I volunteered on the Ohio Investigation Society for two years. In that time, I had quite a few of my own experiences with numerous different types of spirits... including traditional hauntings with straight imagery that repeated on a regular basis: A woman who walked from one end of the room to the other, and disappeared as she reached the wall.

The most interesting one I saw, I actually caught on film(I still have it, too). It was during standard procedure(a lone walkthrough of the premisis), where I caught more than 1/4th of a human torso and arm moving transparently across the screen. It was really good stuff.

I got interested in that research because of my own personal experiences, which frieghtened me so badly that I went to find all the information I could to make some sense of what was happening to me.

Excellent topic!! Keep them coming!

I believe that they can be a manifistation of the mind but dont always have to be. Which would mean i have to believe they exist.
I have had many expiriances with them. Most manifested by my friends and i just got picked on as well. It was never as extreme as yours' though. They just hid out things, and kicked us. And if we were watching a movie with friends They would open a locked door and then slam it in a scarry part of the movie just to scare all of our non-believer friends.
A few of our poltergiests were friends that have passed, however, and still cant let go of us. So they have became out poltergiests.

When I was young, many years ago...I'm talking real young.....2- maybe 3....I had ongoing contact with sometype of spirit....poltergise....ghost....not sure what to call it...I was so young that I really don't remember what really happened....I had an "Imaginary Friend"....my parents explained it to me like this....I was extremely adment about this thing being real...Food on plates at the dinner table....talking for hours to an empty chair...playing all kinds of toddler games with it....to the point where they felt threatened, and afraid, because they started to think that It may be more than just an imaginary friend....needless to say we moved very soon after they became afraid...they sold the house to a friend of there's and the Imaginary friend disappeared....About a year later they had to excerize that house and found there to be a spirt of a young boy causing random hauntings....floating trash cans, Pantry doors slamming....childest stuff like that....I was not hold these story's until my 21st birthday...even without the knowledge of these events, I have always believed and always been sensitive to the paranormal....just a little story about me and poltergiest...have any questions just ask.....got alot of events similiar to that in my life....

Anyone in my opinion who had been through a very turbulent time in their lives will in essence create a poltergiest.

But the difference is that depending on what happened will determine what the poltergiest will do.

This is due to the fact that it live deep in your subconcious and it comes out when you dont really think about it. You lose control of it and it start causeing very strange things to occur.

I think and this is just my opinion that poltergeist are energy left behind from diffrent experiances and could be good or bad , mostly bad since bad experiances seem to generate more energy , you can feel when bad things have happened the air seems to be thick and stale....and depending on the amount of energy thats generated from the experiances ,i think is what makes the manifestation happen

I think that poltergeist are brain waves magnified so immensly by extreme emotions that they no longer need neurons to communicate with things. These rogue brain waves do things that the person emmitting them wants to do subconciously.

Everyone, on some level wants some sort of power over other people of things this is reflected into your subconcious and effects your decisions without you realizing it.

Maybe through periods of extreme emotions when you want something to happen subconciously it happens and to you its a ghost or poltergeist........These are just my views on the topic.......I Really Have No Idea.

I know for a fact that they are not manifistations of the mind. When I was a very young girl living on an Air Force base in Kokomo Indiana, called Grissom. In this house dwelt a little girl around the age of seven or eight. She would play with our toys (my brother's too) and would jumprope at night in my brother's bedroom. We had a wooden rocking horse that seemingly rocked for no reason and then would stop abruptly. I know I didn't create her, and neither did my brother, but we both knew about her. My mother and her friend Kim also knew about her, they had seen her standing at the top of the stairs in a nightshift that hung to her ankles. Her hair was long and her eyes were hollow. Come to find out sometime later on that the house we lived in was built overtop what used to be a very old cemetary. The story of the little girl was very well known to those in the area and almost no one would venture into our house. I am insane? I don't give you satisfaction either way, however, that would make four of us dillusional.
