I have been coming across quite a bit of folklore on the subject. Specifically certain colors corellate to different aspects of the universe...Black Candles=Black Magic, Red Candles=matters of the heart. I am a complete neophyte on this topic but will be checkingbooks out for further info. In the interim, i 'd like to hear from practicing (not potheads who like candles lol) and try to understand the uses and repercussions.
Why do we place human traits on these candles? Just because we tend to think black equals darkness and red equals love, it doesnt make it universally true.
Some could argue that our belief in those colors/emotions is what allows the candles to hold those properties. The mind is very powerful and I don't doubt that it is capable of much more than we currently understand...

Usually there are certain candles that represent different things.....
In ritual a red candle in the south to represent fire, a blue in the west to represent water, a yellow in the east to represent air, and a green in the north to represent earth.....
There are also candles to represent the god and goddess in ritual....
Most of the time yes matters of the heart are red candles, white used for purification or protection, green to be used when dealing with finances....
I dont know if that helped you at all. :)
but is there any true meaning to the candles color other than what we assign it? For example, in Japan white indicates death not purity or anything that western civilization typically equates with that color...

As in most anything- it is what you believe that counts. The enpowerment you give the candle, no matter the color.
And what you are asking for in return.
Dark Greeting's,
A White candle can be empowered for anything since it is all colors.I use blk candles for dark moon magic and to get rid of negitivity.Like everyone else has said it is the intent not always the color. That is simpithitic magic useing a candle, siegel or thing to represent what you want. Also Pink is used more for love where red is used for Lust but that is in my tradition.I hopre this helps.

I think it depends on your beliefs as to what the color of a candle will stand for.

The candles in general are a representation. It is not that each candles color holds the "power" of what you place it with. It is the representation of what you place it with, it is the person that is performing the magic that gives them the energy they take hold of. It is as in any ritual if you do not have a certain tool you replace it... If you do not have a chalace you replace it with a glass or cup or some sort... it isnt the chalace that holds that power and energy, it is the person using it... Its all a representation. :)
I haven't used candles yet. I have a book on how to use the candles
Certain colors may represent specific energies you wish to incorporate into your purpose.. Here's a link that may help:

This is an enlightening thread (no pun intended). I think the color of the candles would strengthen the belief behind them. But, ultimately is is up to the one who is using them to determine its symbolism and their overall function.
I have heard of it, then again folklore intertwined with candels could be....I dont take to heart certain aspects of magic. I will look into the realm of summoning with candles.
Being Wiccan, I memorized the color candle meanings. Then I have decided it does'nt matter the color of the candle as long as your intentions are good. To me grazing into the candle, is like praying, and the candle is the focus point to keep you on your intended attention*
Candles are merely a tool that are used in the performance of witchcraft and majick. These are not necessary and I don't believe they have to be a certain color to obtain the desired effect.

here in our country, lighting black candles and praying over it with the name of someone you hate makes that person unlucky..
if you light a red candle over the grave, they say tha the soul buried in the grave will not be in peace.
i guess candle meanings and summonings differ on culture and beliefs
Well I'll simply say this about the colors:
The main concentration of the candle is of course the wax. The colors in the wax are derived from blood, mineral and plant giving the candels their colors. Now I'm talking about the OLD ways of colors not the commercial methods which do absolutely nothing except make the wax look pretty.
If you wish to use candles in any form of practice, it would be best to do it correctly, with the correct atmosphere, the correct mindset, and the correct "wording"
It's a science, a very old and careful science where mistakes are not tolerated.
candles are a good way to do spells it is gentle and and good for beginners
The few times I used candles, I used ones I know were not commercially made but by someone of the old ways...and did them at the correct time and laid out and proper wording....something I've not done for quite some time, but never to be taken lightly.
This thread has been enlightening (punny) I hope to learn more and have ordered books to be sent by older relatices that were into this practice...then again they ate pigs feet and knickles and as a city girl....that causes doubt LOL. I just want to learn about everything. I'll be bugging you guys with urban legends next...
Thanks friends!
I do use black candles and also red and light blue, I also use other elements to do spells, curses/hex, and what I need to do, even meditation and at times I use it to do astral projection and OOB experience, I had a hard time findings some of the candles I wanted, but the funiest part is I found the ones that were not availble at the candle shop near my house, at the grocery store, I took all the shell, dont want ot rune out of it lol
I made candles for a few years and the uses of the colors were a very personal thing. Only those reading candle magic 101 from a book put specific colors to certain uses. I think the books are good guidlines for beginners but, as you grow in knowledge you will get a certain feeling with different colors.
In response to the color of candles " white is all colors" that only pertains to light. When mixing pigments for candles , or other art forms , black is the all colors.
will something happen if i try to light a black candle during a black out here?
0= )
it all depnds on what you are doing at the time and what ritual you are using, the diffrent color candles do represent diffrent things. if i am doing a hurtful spell I like to use a black and red set but that is just more my "taste" then anything else
Good point neo.. and others have made here as well. Even though certain colors can pertain to specific things..it's still your intentions that bring about your result. You may feel more connected with some colors or energies and using them as opposed to the "correct" color may manifest a more positive outcome :)
I like to do some practical candle burning. But I find that i will lite candles of the color of my mood more then the ones of predisposed meaning. I find that if anything it just helps me relax and get to a more meditative state at an increased pace. And if I am meditating on my moods color I usually find a state of peace. If I am truly attempting to perform some manner of magik then I might refer to the predisposed colors as something to focus on. I think really that is the point anyway, to focus your energy in a particular direction. So if you already have a color for a specific purpose it just cuts down on you having to create your own symbolic items. I think the ones you create work better anyway.
here is acool sight to check out

this thread has been very helpful to me as well. Learn somehting new everyday.!!
I would assume that the colors of a candle would help as a focus of the intention but wouldn't that allow for a candle to be whatever color the practitioner wanted so long as the color was significant in their mind? Or do most practitioners of candle magic follow that the colors are for the god or goddess being called upon and are therefore more strictly followed?
In my experience, I use white candles for binding spells and black candles for the conjur of destruction
I have always wanted to know the significance of the whole candle thing. I find this thread to be very usefull. Thanks for starting it.
I have always used white candles. As others have said, there is no real significance of color---it really depends on the culture. So white is generally the way to go.
But on the other hand, the mind can empower things beyond what they are. Like giving the color red a significance in the emotion of love.
And spirits may have certain affinities with different colors.
I dunno. Maybe I am loony!
black doesnt mean bad. it helps banish negativity. using it for bad only makes it something u dont want to mess with. forget revenge hate all those sillies. u only hurt yourself.
get some good books. study them, learn what works for YOU. then go for it.
as for summoning to speak with spirits/guides etc? not everyone can do that so if it doesnt "work" it may be that it isnt meant for u . especially if u r not developed enough in other areas. Like I said. books, read, study, learn and then act.
im not sure everyone wants to read study and learn... i wish that was the case, but if it was, why not google the topic instead of claiming total ignorance on the topic? there are sooooooo many ways to find information in this day and age, and not to belittie our community here, but discussion can only occur when people know what they are talking about.
i know there are supposed meanings to candles.. or i should say there are meanings given by individuals...but what empowers the candles has nothing to do with the candle manufactoring plants.
there are many differnent summoning candles but it depends on wat ya are summoning
I adore candle magic! Once you start reading about it, you're gonna want to get into it!!! You will find that the more you practice, the easier it will be, and you will be making your own candle spells in no time. There isn't a colour code set in stone, but the basics stay the same. Have fun, enjoy, and be careful!!
