I suppose this should take the form of two parts...the first being the question of whether or not you feel that there are in fact spirits, spirit creatures, demons, gods or deities that exercise enough interest in us the living to pay attention to a call.

The second question is whether or not you feel something of that nature would respond to summonings, or in any way be bound by them?

There are various schools of thought that say they do respond or that they are parts of our subconcious, and such things are more or less tuning into the appropriate deity.

I know that I myself have done various invocations, including the Goetic variety, and they do indeed respond. As to whether its real or a projected experience, I couldn't tell you, but it SEEMS real.

As a practicioner of Ceremonial Magic, i have had more then just a taste of spirtual summonings.

Yes, i do believe in it, obviously, as i traffick with Eudodaemons (i know i am misspelling that..) and even some cacodaemons.

I wouldn't know about the second part of your question -- i've never had a problem. My will is strong, and i have yet to be 'possessed'. the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram doesn't really apply to me, nor does the Greater equiv.

I do believe in Spirits and various other spiritual Entities. I think some of the actual conscious beings would answer to summonings, but others who do not actually think and are just a mass of energy would be unable to answer to summonings and could only react to the energy put out by the individual.

I'm not sure about summoning them, but I've had spirits give me hints on things... Getting that feeling about something that I really shouldn't know on my own.

you yourself are a spirit an image of the diety that formed you in their image and if you try to contact a spirit of another it will only respond if if needs to you feel things like energy but it isnt that is somewhat of a spirit and yes sometimes higher powers will tell you things not directly but somehow relating to your problem or worry

The sheer volume of research done on the supernatural give rise to the fact that spirits, demons, etc are real. Do they show interest in us? I believe many do much in the way we like to watch monkeys at the zoo. An amused contempt. As for possession, there are many different forms. Having an evil spirit or demon invade you would be ... uncomfortable to say the least but inviting in a friendly or at least neutral being is not to bad. My protective Totem invades me and that is how he speaks to me and gives me advice or answers my questions or makes his wishes known. Without that joining I would not be able to understand him in his natural form. By joining with me, he can use my own voice and language to better make himself understood.

So given some of the responses, would the overall theory be that your own power is calling forth these entities or that you are requesting their presence through your language & ritual or does your own internal power bind them or do artifacts and ritual bind them (circles, sigils, and spells)?

I find the theory interesting because we consider a summoning the use of something/someone that is (to an extent) more powerful than us and yet a skilled summoner would be deemed safely in control.

With my rituals, i don't 'command' spirits to attend me, i 'request' them to do so.

Since i have a way of wording this that would make it pleasing to the ear of a demon or spirit, i have never had a problem with one not showing up.

So the only reason why it works is because i request and not command.

Spirits deserve respect as well, and i find them equal to me. I would not call someone on the phone and command them to come over and hang. I would ask them. If they say yes or no, that is their right.

Same with spirits.

You have to be carefull what u bring into the light from the dark Not all is good when mixed. And you also have to be carefull what u summons it might not be what u really called for . Trust me

I believe that beings can be summoned to the fold, however only the most experienced magician or sorceror should ever attempt it. These entities are powerful things (as many things Supernatural), and they deserve your respect.

At the same time, you have to show enough initiative and courage to not be scared and ask the being in the most polite terms possible what you want it to do.

One never summons something else until they conquer themselves. You must have absolutely no fear in your heart. Until you are truly fearless (even death or wherever the being may be from must not shake your convictions).

Give beings their due of honour and respect, and if you catch them on a good day, to use a colloquialism; they will treat you in a similar fashion. Brash bravado, will get you nowhere. Courage and fearlessness is your only defense, besides your banishing rituals (which you should have memorized; Hades, you should have your entire discipline under great memory before you step up to the plate so to speak).

I can only state facts for myself, and ceremonies, and researches done by myself and other scholors.
Spirits, demons etc....do exsist, in a form, of energy, that we ourselves conjour up by emotions . It is also called in another form, energy....of which we can have do things for us, to us, with us. These are usually the energy source of those done passed away,or of ourselves, of'course, that goes into many beliefs as well. One can take their "energy" or spirit or demon self, to another person by dreams, or in visions etc.
certainly we can summon them,,,,simply by forcing energy or spirit or demon self, or what ever form you wish to call it, to a direction, with much practice, cation and of course guidance. One should NEVER send ones self "spirit" to walk or visit without someone else around to pull you out incase something happens.Again, dangerous practice, but have done many times. Karma is a factor you must be aware of at all times how ever.

for the first question yes there is, for the second there is a way, it si depending on "who" you wanna summon , or /and bond with.

I do believe that you can summon things and most will return the call. My advice on summoning is DON'T!!!! Not unless you know with 150% what you are calling to you. Most of the time the thing you summon is bound only until they feel out the power you truly have and if it's not enough to control them then most of the time all hell breaks loose!

I believe in spirits and such, but I think summonimg them could be dangerous. I knew a Native American that said he had been harrased by an evil spirit all his life because his mother summoned it. She could protect her self, but not her child.

I do believe that there are spirits, deities etc but i don't think that they can be summoned at will. I think that if one of these creatures are summoned they choose to be, usually for a purpose of their own that they will share with the summoner at a later point

the way I look at it all creatures are the same at heart... if someone calls for you, and they don't perticularily interest you, you don't tend to answer and if you do you don't give the answer they want persay

I know that ghosts, spirits, demons, whatever you want to call them are real. I used to be visisted by two spirits on a regular basis as a child. They can be summoned but I feel that's a two way street. You have to ask them and they have to want to come if you are the one summoning. On the flipside, you don't have to invite in order for them to come to you, i.e. hauntings, possessions. As far as holding, you have to be really confident in your ability to perform the summon and even then the spirit may be too strong. Bottom line, don't summon unless you are prepared for the spirit never leaving.

So again, just to bring my thoughts together on this...the overwhelming opinion here is that summoning can be done by an amateur but with some danger. That would imply that a great deal of inner power or knowledge isn't required to summon but merely to maintain control. Would that mean that the ritual or sigils used to summon had an inherent power to do so since a veritable novice could use it successfully (albeit dangerously)?

Sigils do help.

You can do it without (see Crowley's illustrated Goetia), and the rituals tend to be exhaustive.

However, the Novice tends to not have the willpower, and thus might be ignored.

The real insidious ability of these things is the way they manipulate YOU, and not the other way around. For instance, you may summon a being in order to help you get a job, it might reply that it needs a year to do so. Obviously that probably won't work, so you need to tell it "No, do it NOW". Even if its really a part of you, it still needs to be reigned in.

Keep in mind that internal or external, they don't do anything for free, and without that absolute control to keep your wits AND get rid of them when the time is right, there will be problems.

And yes, an amateur can do it if they really want (I did, and I have yet to really think I've mastered it), but it would be at great personal danger.

If I were a spirit, I don't care how good your juju would be; I wouldn't be summoned by a moron. I might respond to someone intelligent and filled with respect, both for themself and the power they presumed to wield.

Joli - what if you allowed yourself to be summoned but not controlled. It could be argued that those beings that are summoned, come because they crave the attention or the interaction and not so much because they are so physically bound to do so. I believe that's a common belief behind poltergeists. So a moron is if nothing else, a possible believer and enabler.

But again, some have spoken to the sheer power of symbols, ritual (especially in numbers) and things like the 'true name' of a being. The idea that perhaps, the power of these things grow with use and history through generations or tradition. Something used repeatedly over centuries may begin to hold more and more appeal to a being through sheer familiarity or respect of the tradition. Maybe a bond or pact is formed between users and being through history and tradition that is respected even perhaps when undeserved.

I would think that it depends on whether you have that spirit's approval if you wanted to summon it. but yeah, I think you could summon some type of Diety... just watch out what You summon though

I think one must believe he tries to summon. But I personally believe the spirits exist and would like to hope they would appear if I put forth the effort to summon them

I think there are spirits and yes they have an interest in us do we not have an interest in them and where they are. They just have the ability to come and see us and where we are and some of us have the ability to see them but still wonder what they do when they go home.

As far as summoning I think that can be dangerous and should not be played with at all

Well for one, I do believe in spirits, demons,etc.And I do believe they can be summoned or called if u prefer that term.I prefer the latter as it sounds a bit gentler*grins* depending on what one is calling.Ya don't want piss something off, ya might not be able to get rid of.
I believe any energy or spirit can be called, summoned if one knows how to go about it.

Sacred - do you believe any being might exist beyond our sight that may have an interest in us or be attracted to our energy? Things like elementals (salamanders, etc) or astral entities? Perhaps not even things that have our self awareness or intelligence but something that lives on another plane?

i think spirits will respond to things only if they want. i dont think they are held to summonings. or that just because they are being summoned that they have to appear or prove they are there. spirits are like us, they are picky and moody.

When my wife and I were first married we went to Tennessee to visit her grandparents. She wanted to take them out for dinner, but we didn’t have any extra money with us. I remembered reading a book, wish I could remember what it was called, about calling upon the “little people.” For some reason the mantra for money sprang into my head and I started repeating it over and over. After a few minutes I felt a rustling in my pants pocket and when I reached in I pulled out a $50 bill. I have never been able to remember the mantra since then. I believe that spirits can be summoned but only if they are willing to be. I’m not saying that a spirit will answer only if it wants to help, you might get a malicious one to answer your summons instead of a beneficial one.

The being in question, whether it exists in the mind of oneself or others, always has free will, as is the nature of life and perception itself. Any actions taken by the being can backfire, however, if one chooses very carefully, these kinds of problems can be minimized.

I believe spirits to a degree can be called to you.. turely summonded I am unsure as i have never tried to force one to come to me that did not wish to. Somehow this jsut seems like asking for trouble. Because even if your able to bind it.. one tiny mis step and your luch so to speak.. I see no reason to risk that.

Yes you can summon demons/spirits, etc., but be careful! Make sure you really know what your doing.

All I can think of is all the publicity about the cojuring up of the spirit of Houdini, I hope most of you remember when that was aired of national television. Houdini vowed to his wife that he would in deed return to her if it were possible. All the hype and no out come what-so-ever. Might as well have been Geraldo trying to raise him from the dead. I believe in spirits and such; I do not however believe that care for our worldly things or can communicate with us in true form.

My friend and I are going to summon an animal spirit sometime soon and try to get someone possessed..We hope to try controlled possession (hopefully such a thing exists..)...So I'll let you know after we do summon the spirit...

I believe that spirits can be summoned. Just make sure you are doing this for the right reason.. And be Careful, you never know how dangerous things can be.

I believe that spirits can be summoned, I also believe if you don't know what your doing you can get yourself in a a lot of trouble. If you tamper with the craft there may be a price to pay.

I myself have never called upon or summoned any spirits. But, I do have friends that are very well versed in such things. I believe strongly that this can be done. But, should be left to those who are experienced. This is not something that a novice should try.

Is the general consensus that a summoning is a request of a being and not a command?

Also, how does summoning compare with most peoples opinions of manifestation (the art of creating what you summon as opposed to inviting it)?

I am positive that demons and spirits exist. I have been witness to some pretty unique phenomenon while practicing Goatia Magick. This is one of the reasons that I stopped. Along those lines and in response to the second part of your question, yes it is possible to summon them; however, getting them to obey you and not take control of the situation or you is another story. These are very dangerous practices and anyone that has true knowledge of this type of magick would warn you against the practice of it.

NCBandit - But with that type magic (the lessor key of Solomon) having the true name and the sigil of said beings is to bind them...so when you'd say summon Forneus, did you feel in danger even with possession of the right tools? Or merely in the presence of something whose control you could easily lose? Like reigns and saddle on a wild mustang?

Spirits are real, at least seeing them, feeling there presence makes me say so.
I have found a few moments when I could contact specific ones... So yes.
