My family was to the King Tut Exjbit today, some movies suggest a link between Egypt and the origin of vampires, I saw no evidence of this today. What do you on VR think?

I think there is no direct link. People base it off of the Osiris story and his return from death. This is merely an aspect of vampires that has been promoted by Anne Rice. Interesting twist though.

I think vampires may have been there but as for their origins I am not fully sure...so why not? Would it put the worlds mind at ease if we said it was Egypt?

i dont know. i dont recall blood rituals per say. anchient aztec ,inca or myan. now there;s a differnt story. egyptian lore is full of after life though....

I personally believe the theory became popularized by ther novel, Queen of the Damned.

i do like the egyptian idea... and some of the rituals i heard about would make this threoy make sence.

I have read some eygptian stories and the truth is that I havent heard any stories or books about this so maybe I need to look into more and truly see if there are indeed any connections into the both of them.

I really don't think that vampires came from there. But if vampires have been around that long maybe it could happen

There are so many theories. It is very interesting to consider Egypt in the mix. I still think that Vlad was most likely the first, because of his power over so many people.

the theory is mostly du to the fact that the momification is about the after life and also the principle belef when several sacrifice a blood were require to insure the passage of the Pharao to his destination, for exemple when the worker or salves are slaughter in the tomb to make sure all is in order, not only to keep it secret but to insure the faith of the king.

I can see the connection, but it is just one in many theories. I doubt we'll ever know for sure.

The origin of written language is the only origin I could see.

Being king of the underworld does not equate to being a vampire, in my openion.

Osiris was the redeemer and merciful judge of the dead in the afterlife, and also the underworld agency that granted all life.. it just doesn't parallel vamparism, in my openion.

I feel that the Anne Rice books put that idea in peoples heads. I agree with someone elses suggestion to look more at the inca's and aztec societies where blood rites where common. The egyptians valued life, and honoured death.

I don't have a clue as to whether or not they are connected but there are some early blood drinking sects in egypts history so maybe so

i dont think there is a connection with ancient egypt and the first brood of vampires. but there was a thread before that discussed how lilith was the first of all..

And in reference to neonate's message: If you research a little deeper, you'll discover Osiris was better known as a god of vegetation before his brother, Seth, murdered him. Isis, his sister-spouse, broought him back to life - but ONLY because the god of the Underworld THEN, Anubis, helped her. Osiris took over Anubis's place, but in only some areas. And the god that judged mortals' hearts before they entered the afterlife was actually Thoth. Please know what you're talking about before you blabber.

No, I'm not assuming Egypt is the most ancient civilization, just that it is the first place to house actual vampires.

I believe that every culture at some point believed they were the mother to spawn vampiric children, until the various forms of communication allowed the information to be exchanged, thus creating wars in the process. Every culture up 'til then probably had to explain such mysterious behaviours, and vampire-like creatures was the best they could come up with.

you may link egypt with warewolves but vampires no no chance .according to the markings found in most of the historical sites there human body on animal head that cant be a vampire...lol...

niether osiris or set were vampires but came to life again because of the betrayle of a subject and osiris's wife helped him there is no link

The Ancient Egyptians were great people. They beheld many gods and goddess's. If I remember correctly, they had one god that was like a vampire. I remember studying this in grade school. I do believe that they perceived vampires in that day, but I do not believe that it has something to do with the origin.

Hmmmmm.....did vampires start in ancient egypt, i really think not as the ancient sumerians had a word for vampire (akhkharu) and they were around long before the egyptians.........

Whichever assumption you choose to make, I find it difficult to accept that Egypt was the first.

Perhaps it might stretch to say that organised, semi-religious groups may have formed vampire archetypes, but certainly, I find it implausible that they were the first, the progenitors, if you will, of the vampire state of being.

I will not attest to Egypt, my motherland of my soul, being the originator of vampires, but I will attest that yes, vampires did exist in the ancient culture.

Babylonian=Lilu
Jewish=Lilitu
Sumerian=Akhkharu
English=Succubi

Umm... MaximusPain, I would just like to say that though it was said Sekhmet was a vampire... she was just a daughter of Re' with a fiery temper and the head of a lioness. She was also Hathor's tool for the destruction of man-kind - but most certainly not a vampire.

Vampires have been around from a long time myths and whisper have been spoken about them throuh the ages

vampires did not originate from one certain place or another. the different "breeds" did, though, come from different origins and nationalities. when the world had one large land mass, pangea, there were no countries like egypt. since vampires are, basically, immortal they would have been around long before humans who have sucha short ife span. since there were no different countries, there weere no different nationalities, but the different covens eventually split up and claimed their own countries and that was the beginnign of the different origins.

I agree in the fact that the ancient egyptians did indeed drink the blood of their enemies before their culture and society flourished and their god/desses were given more corporeal form, however i cannot agree with the idea that SET was most likely to be vampyric as set was indeed a child of osiris.....therefore not as old as the more ancient egyptian gods (re/ra etc etc)

I think the origin of vampires could be debated just as easily as the origin of anything.. including the world itself. The only fact is that none of us here now in this lifetime were actually around when time began so we're forced to speculate based on everyone else's opinion. I'm sure there were/are vampires in every culture.. in some shape or form. But who's to say where anything originated.

i can read egyptian and ancient egyptian but i have never came across anything that had to do with vampires in egypt now if u want to further back in time before ancient egypt its called orion in english but is pronounced nOkutaes

i firmly dont believe there is any connection to ancient egyp and vampires,it might be possiblethat cerian ppl had a few vampiric traits but i wouldnt consider any connection direct anyways might just of been a coincidence if anything.

I must in that case point out that when the ancient egyptians invaded sumeria they took on some of the sumerian beliefs. As i have stated before the sumerians believed in the existence of the vampire and called them Akhkharu.....therein lies a link from the world of the ancient egyptian empire. It is very common for people to forget exactly how big the egyptian empire became at it's height, and whenever the egyptians conquered a new land and made it their own, it created an influx of new traditions and crops etc etc....religion was not excluded from this. The ancient egyptians were a very wise and knowing people and they were not blinded by the fact that other cultures had their own religions, and instead of casting these ideals out, the egyptians embraced them.

The osiris cult was originally accadian.

I really agree with LordFangor. There is not really a link that was not mass media induced. Every culture has their "demons", and they are all different. But I can tell you that not one culture was not affected by another in the way they stories have been passed around.

I just wanted to add to my last post. I do not believe in any way that the vampire society was started in egypt, and nor have i personally found any references to the vampire.....i am just stating that the connection i can see is from the sumerians who were conquered by the egyptians and how the egyptians always adopted other cultures beliefs into their own whenever they conquered a nation.

I have however, failed to state that the egyptians did not succeed in conquering the entire sumerian territories and therefore would not necessarily have even known of the vampire myths that the sumerians wrote about.

I will do some additional research into this however, as i feel it may benefit the majority of us.

If i find anything conclusive i will post links here.

though i dont know much about the egyptian culture i do know that some of the earliest stories of vampires came from ireland dont know if it helps but that is what i have read many times over

I think there is a strong possibility of a connection. Ancient Egypt had it's own stories of Vampirism but it could have gone back even further than that.

There's no direct link with the orgins of vampires, the only thing i can find with vampires & Egypt in it is the fictional "Queen of the Damned"...other than that, no sorry!

Every culture has it's mythos about vampires. Why should Egypt be any different.
