Well I do believe in Ghosts, and I do believe they can appear anywhere. So why not? Though 95% of the time I'd guess people are just seeing things.
I 100% believe in ghosts, but im thinking if it was me and i lived in a haunted house and i saw something in my mirror, i think i would be leaning toward it just being my imagination, but i would also have to think if i have ever seen anything odd or out of the ordinary before, and if i hadnt then i think i would just be seeing things.
There are a few of these "shadow" threads still open. Here for one example.
~ billy
There e several other threads which have been discussing very similar ideas to this one.
Please would you contribute to one of those.
Thanks.
I would think that most of the time people are just seeing things but their are probably thoes times where the person has seen a real ghost behind them, but for me it would be hard to tell because i would not know if it was a ghost or my mind playing tricks on me...
The reason for my re-opening this thread, is due to the way in which the thread poster has conducted themself, both in constructing an articulate discussion and in approaching me to discuss it.
hmmm interesting
This sort of response is entirely unacceptable.
STABB
mirrors have long since been used in magic to see into the spirit realm. some cultures have myths about mirrors being able to capture souls, and it is highly likely that a mirror could absorb some essence of someone who has stared into it long.
i have an interesting tale myself if you would like to hear it.
I am actually really scared to see a Ghost in the mirror, in a scene like this for example. It just totally freaks me out. So of course I believe in this.
Do share. =)
Thank you, Stabb. I appreciate the opportunity to discuss this.
Yes, please, if you respond, be more articulate in your post(s). :)
I've never experienced seeing a ghost in the background of my reflection. I have seen something in a mirror before, but I've related that experience in the thread that Billy has so graciously pointed out. That encounter doesn't belong here. I'm talking about seeing something behind you, then turning to find nothing.
So let's discuss that. Let's first say that you have actually seen a ghost behind you...that's it's not a figment of your imagination. When you turn and there's nothing, why is that? Have you spooked the spook? Have they vanished because they realize you've seen them when they didn't want to be seen? Or is there something about a reflective surface that allows one to see something that's not there?
before i trod my present path, i was an occultist, and one night - out of curiosity - i performed a summoning ritual within a magic circle, but i deliberately left my wardrobe mirror uncovered. nothing happened - or so it seemed. however, several people said they felt uncomfortable with the mirror, and that they felt as if they were being watched. i often had occasion to walk past it in the dark, and often when i did so, i would feel as if gentle hands reached out to touch me as i walked past. after a while, i took to keeping the mirror covered up at all times, and this seemed to prevent the touching hands and the uncomfortable feeling of being watched.
after a few years though, i got used to it, and did not feel uncomfortable myself, so i would often uncover it. something else which may or may not have been connected with the mirror - if i stayed up too late reading or working on the computer until the early hours of the morning, there would be a knock on my bedroom door at four in the morning. why four, i have no idea.
eventually i left the mirror uncovered for longer and longer periods, until one day i sensed the presence was gone. i no longer felt as though watched, and never again did i feel the hands touch me. to be honest, i rather missed it. the four o clock knocking stopped too.
that has happened to me and to several of my friends numerous times and even seen some spirit's outside of mirror's and in the shadows of halls and such a couple of times. I don't bother keeping track of each happening because they tend to happen to me a great deal of time, as well as my friends. There is also a couple of cemetaries in my area that have had documented E.V.P.s and other paranormal activities that I like to go to towards the evening to see and hear the spirits coming and going. Hope this helps strengthen the beliefs of those who are not strong believer's in the paranormal and the activities that they perform. Carpe Noctem
I see blurred faces in the mirror often. Usually it is out of the corner of my eye so I have never been 100% that I really saw something. But it raises the hairs on the back of my neck and really creeps me out.
I've never had any experience with it, though I've always had that "irrational" fear...Also the fear that Michael Jackson would be behind me when I looked in the mirror...Humor aside, in all seriousness I wouldn't be surprised if that happened when I was a child and scared the shit out of me, because I have a tendency to avoid mirrors.
You should try a little experiment. Watch a scary movie then go do something in a mirror. Don't just stand and look in it. Do something...like brush your teeth or dry your hair. Do something distracting. I guarantee that if you're in the right state of mind--jumpy after watching something scary--you'll see all sorts of things behind you.
When it comes to reflective surfaces, it can be very easy to trick yourself into seeing something that isn't there. Especially if you're already in a ghostly state of mind. Anything could scare you...a cloud passing by the window, a curtain moving ever so slightly in a breeze, etc.
I have never actually seen anything in the mirror but I have seen shadows. At one house there was this one thing there (shadow) that lept from one wall to another. Made the hairs on my arms stand up. kinda spooky. I get the feeling that someone is watching me and i turn around and see nothing but a shadow that leaves very quickly.
I lived in the same house for about 7 years and it is haunted, there was a vanity mirror at the bottom the stairs and evry morning I would see a kid of about 5-7 and he would wave turn around and run deeper in to the mirror. I can't really speak for anyone else but thats what I have to say.
I had something very similar happen to me as was the original hypothosis. It really freaked me out but I was only about 10 at the time. Never really tried to think about it more after that.
I have seen glimpses in the mirror but I always hoped it was my imagination lol. I see shadows all the time. Usually out of the corner of my eye. I've only been sure once that it was a ghost or something. The other times I figure my imagination is tricking me. I do have an overactive imagination. I do believe that ghosts are real. So I think it is totally possible that I am seeing ghosts. It freaks me out though lol.
I beleive in ghosts as i live in a house that is haunted. As for seeing something in a mirror behind you, it could be your imagination or there could be something there, depends on the circumstances, history of the house etc
Though I have no rational reason for so doing, I allways avoid looking at the mirror in my bedroom if I have to get up at night.
I could understand it if I had seen anything other than what should be there.
I've never seen a ghost (spirits yes but that's a different issue) but I have seen "ghostly" occurrences in a reflective surface.
Happened a few years ago, my mother and I were sitting on the couch in front of a turned off TV set doing a meditation & energy session. I happened to open my eyes during it and saw in our reflection in the TV screen ghostly movements, energies being reflected, call it what you will, but it was very weird! Mum didn't see it at all, but she was better disciplined than me and kept her eyes closed.
I know that my grandma is always with us, protecting us, we can feel her at home ...
one day i was driving at night and i got lost, i couldnt find the address i was looking for and suddenly i was far from home trying to get back... then, i looked back through the mirror and i saw a figure like a shadow, sitting in the back seat... the only thing i could say was: Grannie, if it is you, please don't scare me...
i dont know how, but i found the way back home and i got there safely...
I worked in a nursing home for years on the night shift.. Granted you get spooked because its kinda creepy in itself. But I've seen strange things go on many a night...
One night this woman was about to pass on, so of coarse me being the newbie at the time had to sit with her. Well she kept looking over at the mirror and pointing , trying to speak to it... I couldnt make out what she was saying so i went over to the mirror and there was an old man in a top had and grey suit just hanging out in the mirror...
I was a little spooked but I think maybe it was womeon she new in life who passed on and was there to help her cross over..
I havent seen a ghost in the mirror before but i very much believe in them as 2 of my houses i have lived in are haunted. I have heard footsteps, moaning and swear i heard something say my name on a few occasions. I think sometimes it can be your imagination working over time but then again who knows it could of been a ghost to.
Hmmmm...
Well lets get down to the facts here, okay? All we know is run on facts, or something of that sort, right?
The fact of the matter is no one can say they saw a Ghost without a doubt. It's always guesses upon guesses. And the more object(s) that guess is made upon, the more fictional it becomes.
Like Theta said, if you are in the right mind-set and basically anything happens...anything moves...you WILL think it's something Supernatural. Especially with the added "Old Mirror" effects.
Now, I've never seen a Ghost...and I will never believe in them. Not unless one pops up on me -randomly-, not in a Hunted House or a Mirror or anything...just randomly, and I can perfectly see it.
I won't go to a Mirror to find a Ghost.
Why is it that what we see "out of the corner" of our eyes is considered less real than what is right in front of us.
When he was a child, yy son was crazy about a series of books that featured art (The Mind's Eye, I think)--- many geometrics, but not all --- where you couldn't see what was there unless you did look at it indirectly.
Like the famous sketch of the witch/young girl. Many people see one or the other, but can learn to see both by a shift of the head or eyes.
My point is that I don't dismiss what I see in a flash and then it's gone, nor the whispers. They've always been there, part of my perception of the world, and only when I was a child, alone, did I fear them.
I just find it a bit funny that all the Ghosts people have claimed to see, they saw "in a corner of their eye" or "in a flash". Why don't people ever see them in FRONT of their eyes and for a few good moments before they vanish again? I just find these stories a bit too fictional. -shrugs-
when i was a kid i saw what could only be a ghost strolling down the hall, it was kinda creepy but who ever it was left me alone and i kinda left him alone also, accept for the time he kept turning my light on after i had turned it off
This of course makes me think of the urban legend of Bloody Mary. I'm probably think of this because of the time of year but you're supposed to stand in a bathroom with the lights off in front of the mirror at midnight and say her name in a whisper 13 times and then she'll appear. Supposedly she'll harm you by scratching your face or something along those lines. The story varies on what you're supposed to do and what is supposed to happen of course but that's the main idea.
i have never seen a spook behind me but if there was and i told some one that person may think i was perinoid or i was crazy..
Anyone who has never seen a Ghost or anything Super natural thinks that the people that do are a bit off. That's perfectly understandable too. I even admit that I'm like that....but I do know that these things exist in some form(s). Maybe not like people have described them over the ages, but they -are- out there.
I think that the random split-second flashes you see behind you in mirrors, water, or other reflective surfaces are just plays of light that make you think something was there and something moved.
Sometimes people see these things for more then a split-second. I just wish someone could actually capture this on tape. Not only some Orb or some Shadow, as that could just be the lighting. But an actual figure...appear and vanish. If Ghosts really exist, then this is possible.
I agree V. I'll admit I'm a huge skeptic about things anyways. I don't believe in anything until it's shoved in my face. So if someone says to me that they've seen a ghost I usually join the nod and smile politely brigade and make the twirly finger sign behind their back =P
Twirly finger sign!? And what finger are you twirling!? LOL!
But yes. I'm exactly the same way. I don't want weirdos to think I'm mean to them or anything. That's dangerous. =p
To get somewhat back on the point here, most people that see actual ghosts or spirits behind them in the mirror, can usually see ghosts and spirits in front of them or for extended periods of time. I can see ghosts and spirits all around, not like in The Sixth Sense, but I see orbs and figures for sometimes a minute or two. Most of them do not like being recorded in any means, unless they have some kind of a message to deliver to this someone in theis realm. I can go into a cemetary and see spirits and ghosts all around, but when I start to take pictures on my digital camera and start recording on my magnetic and digital recorders, it is like they all choose that time to disappear. I suppose this could be due to the fact that the spirit realm is very old, and in ages past when cameras first came about, they were seen as an instrument of the devil in that the camera would steal your spirit and soul if you had your picture taken. I am not sure if that is way ghosts and spirits rarely appear as figures in picturesbut that is the only thing that can think of as to why they would not appear as figures in pictures. These are just my thoughts and opinions, but hope it helps some to think about it some more. Carpe Noctem
that would really be neat to see a ghosts orb or just any thing so i would have some thing to believe in.. i am very skeptic as well ..
interesting topic but i dont believe spooks or what ever u want to call them can do what ur saying
I believe wholeheartedly in the paranormal but Shadow figures are still a large topic of debate between experts of the field.
I believe in ghosts 100%. Its not just that I believe in them....I have seen them. Could my eyes/mind have been playing tricks on me? Thats a possibility but I choose to believe that it was not a trick. Its esy for other people to say it was but then again they weren't there. They didnt see what I did.
I was 13 when I saw my first ghost....at least the first one I remember. I was standing on the top deck of our two-story house in the woods. I was staring at the snow in disggust....I hate snow....I thought I heard something and shiftedd my gaze up the hill. There I saw a beautiful gray wolf standing in the snow staring at me. The next second it was gone. There was no evidence it had even been there.
My eyes/mind could have been playing tricks on me. It was dark and the moon was full. It could have been a reflection. The only problem is it was a dark sable gray not white. I dont know how you would explain that. I think it was a ghost. You may be more skeptic.
More stories can be found in the story section of my jornal...soon...
Many people always say they have seen Ghosts when they were younger. Kids have a really Activity imagination. Yet another really good reason to be skeptic about this.
I think as a child you do intent to exaggerate by making up stories about things that are imaginary but as an adult most of us stop believing in those sort of things such as ghost's.
I still believe in Ghosts. I just think kids "see" more Ghosts when they are younger as apposed to just "believing" in them as Adults.
I had some experiences with the so called "ghosts".They are too many to describe them here.
I figured out that they are intelligent beings and know some things about the man who are talking with.
There are a lot of false experiences too that could sometimes confuse the man.
Of course this creatures are not always what they pretend to be so careful either you are a believer or not.
~ Just because we can`t prove something with undoubtly evidences, that doesn`t mean they don`t exist. ~
I think this agnostic point of view is tone of the best starting position when you want to approach such subjects.
There are some people who have a greater ability to have a contact with the realm we don`t know very good (I use to call them "mediums") but also there are some people who don`t have this ability very well developed(I use to call them "apprentices").
The first cathegory developed the religions based on mysticism (where the man finally became one with the universe) and the other developed a the magic based religions (where the man tends to subdue and manipulate the natural forces).
Skepticism is not the enemy of the "ghosts" and of the contact with the other realm. It`s just a very useful tool.
Also if you practise magic and wish to
A good obsidian disk is better then a mirror or just a cup of water. No one can guarantee any "scientifical" results in laboratory conditions because we work with a time and a space that we don`t know very well.Remember that the time and space are not fixed dimensions.... Our minds should not be very "fixed" too.
hum i still cant waite to see a ghost or even close to something like it.. i think it would be a rush..
I fully believe in the paranormal but haven't had an experience seeing anthing myself.
I live in a house that's haunted so i do beleive in them fully, at times there's knock on my bedroom door in the middle of the night and when i get up to open it, no one's there and the light is turned on. Also if anyone wants some proof that spirts exist, check out the video i have on my profile, should give you some thoughts.
well I have had the hair on the back of my neck stand alittle and felt a surge come over me yet as me believing it was a spook or ghost or any of that Iam not sure yet if I believe in them.
Yes I bewlive in ghosts...I have lived in many haunted homes over the yrs....now I cleanse my home before ever moving into it so that my kids aren't messed with.
As for an experiance...it was my fisrt time I was around 13 or so and was staying at a friends house that was an old collage dorm...anyway one night I was watching the 3 stooges and his dog started going off in the kitchen when I went in I saw two headless forms walking toward the basement......found out the next day that a total of 8 eople had been killed in the house almost all of them were beheaded
I do believe in ghosts, but I have never seen one in a mirror or otherwise. I have seen them move things and cause violent acts.
we are all such limited creatures... if we could only see all that is about us, we would be truely divine...yet, we are dubious of history and what is in front of us...
I believe and have seen ghosts, never in a mirror though, but I know people who have claimed to have had that experience.
I have experienced many things that I considered to be spirits or ghosts. I can't say that I have ever seen anything in a mirror or reflective surface that I believed to be a ghost. I have had things catch my eye in a mirror, but so many things can reflect, that you can never be sure what it is. And I don't truly understand mirrors. I have been told that mirrors used to be covered during funerals in the home because it was thought the mirror could catch the spirit and trap it. So, I can't answer one way or the other when it comes to seeing something in a mirror. Most likely I would say it wasn't a ghost, spirit, or anything out of the ordinary. That's my opinion.
Well I do believe in Ghosts bit have never seen one i hope i see one before my time isupon this earth it would be neat
I did the Bloody Mary thing as a kid never saw a spook behind me in a mirror but have had interesting photo's taken of me where things that look like mist shaped like people hang over the top of my image. I am constantly creeped out by older houses and I do believe in ghosts spooks and hauntings although having an actual experience is another thing altogether
one time I wassitting at my computer and I heard a scream outside and then about a half hour laterandorb went past meand through my windowfan, the next day i heard that a women had died about 12 feet behind my house around that time the day before. Thats been the strangest experience I think that I have ever experienced.
On the original topic, I belive that mirrors and most reflective surfaces are influenced by light and shadow.
I remain a skeptic!!
I’m pretty skeptical as well. I don’t see any extra value in a reflective surface. If a ghost wanted us to see it why not just make itself seen. If it doesn’t want to be seen I am not sure how a mirror would help. I don’t really think we see ghosts anyway.
I was washing my morning face today, and lifted it up toward the mirror shortly, just to freak out how this thread is TRUE!
Moment after, my vision clarified, to see, that is your towel behind, hanging.
I came to a conclusion that this kind of "paranormal" activity is way too speculativly assumed.
Shortly after, I brushed my teeth.
Stuff like this has happened to me a lot. And I really hope it is my mind playing tricks on me, or me seeing things because this is creepy. And you are right, when something like this happens I totally freeze for a few minutes.
The creepy feeling i felt many times b/4.Seen one floating about-sorry not.
I feel that this is very possible at the same time I wonder if the ghost or spook that we see would be that of someone we know or something from the past.
I have seen brief glimpses of different things in the mirror but never really paid attention to it as I always thought it was from the movie that I watched earlier or that it was a family member checking up on me.
If you feel ok then it is usally a family/friend just looking out for you. Ya can tell the difference. Chills not family for me, for my family will say hi to me. Not that others are bad its just weird thats all.
i do think sometimes just knowing a place is active with spirits can have the mind be over active sometimes but i do believe in ghosts and in hauntings as i have had my own personal experiences.
What you're asking kind of sounds like from the movie that's coming out called 'Mirrors'.
I myself have never experienced this. However, if I did it would change my views on ghosts and whatnot.
I believe in ghosts and yes i have had those experiences too. even cold chills will enter me so just know they are there and if you want tell them to move on.
i believe in ghosts 100% but most of the time people are just seeing things. Like in the little story you wrote with the mirror, the mirror could have lights on it and the thing the person saw behind him/her could of been her/his own shadow.
I believe firmly in ghosts and mirrors are known to be powerful tools to contact the other side.
However, in the above described situation I think that it is your eyes playing tricks. Your senses slows down when taking a hot shower, and the bathroom is fogged up, and that, combined with your light can trick your eyes to think you saw a shadow move.
I've had experiences like this before. Especially on the Queen Mary. I was down showering when I did see a face in the mirror, and when I turned around, no one was there. When I looked back they shook their finger at me and laughed. Then they disappeared..quite interesting.
I to believe in ghosts but I also believe that the can appear in where
i do believe in ghost but like everyone else has said most of the time your mind is playing tricks on yourself and i would love to see a ghost as long as it couldn't hurt me lol
I believe in Ghost and I do think that some times you can see them or feel them around you so why not see them in a mirror as well
I've never had any that involved a mirror however i have had plenty of experience with the shadow folk and yes they can watch and appear at any time and usually flee when discovered. Ghost or otherwise, it has happened.
I too have seen my share and experienced many events.
Too many to place in the pigeon hole of lack of sleep, drugs, imagination.
The shadow beings are interesting as they did intensify with experimental projects.
I like the 95% break down. 5% can be very convincing to some that would less likely be spooked.
HHW is everywhere ~ of course he can be behind himself at the same time... o_O;
Lol, although I don't believe in the "classical" theory that ghosts are dead people or even the souls of people, I do believe that things like this can happen ~ and they're scary as S*** when they do!! O_O
What theory do you believe in then? If not the classical.
Hmmm... I guess that's harder to explain.
Kind of like ghosts are just energy, energy that sometimes builds up enough strength to manifest itself in a physical form.
The energy, however, does come from a human source - whether that individual has died or not is somewhat different.
I know that may not make sense but I tried my best lol
What you view on ghosts sounds like Goblin from Anne Rice's 'Blackwood Farm'. Goblin becomes more powerful from Quin's energy [in the form of blood].
A barn I worked for sometimes late into the night, was located next to a press of some kind, the owner had a good time telling all his new employees that there was a ghost in the loft, sure enough every once in a while something would roll(be thrown) off the loft.. the source? The presses vibration.
A towel, a shower curtain, moister causing thins to shift on walls. Even house hold pets, would have to be ruled out as well.
I believe that there is images in mirrors that might be shadows but with all the paranormal things that go on also I know there are ghosts in this world.
I think I might have had a few of those, but thought nothing of it and just went along with thinking it was just my head playing tricks. Or how about when you think you see something, look away, then look back and it's not there? I always thought that was weird.
Dj -
I believe the latter could be considered just a trick of the eyes.
Certain factors increase our skitish observation, lack of sleep (as mentioned) as well as pre suggestive exposure.. example that ghost show that you watched before taking a shower.
It's kind of the same with people who get scared easily or small children who've seen a scary movie. They'll get paranoid or afraid that that bad thing from the movie is there to get them.
people that are alone for an extended period of time in a big house that usually has plenty of activity, hear things and notice things subconciously that they would not have heard before, like the rattle of a heater, or pipe. Vacuumes created in a house, like swing shut one door and one down the hall thumps its jam, a common thing that is declared to be a geist.
Note also that these very things are used to perform geist activity as well. A door opening in a sealed hall can rattle other doors.
I think that's more the case for those who are used to being around a lot of people or one person at least. Those not used to being alone are usually those more afraid of things.
ive seen things that are not there i belive spirits are all around us
I agree with the post above. If you don't feel afraid than if it is a spirit, than it's a harmless one. But what about those times when something like this happens and you freeze with fright? And you KNOW that whatever it was, it wasn't good. That is truly scary too me. EEK!
i've never actually seen a ghost or shadow in the mirror, but i have seen shadows off of the reflections of some pics that used to hang up in the hallway to the kitchen. it wasn't a trick of the light or things like that either. it was an actual shadow looming at the end of the kitchen.
Well I have not seen one in a reflective surface no, but I do believe in ghosts. I don't think it is your eye playing a trick on you no.
well, sometimes they can be the trick of the light. but there are times when you really DO see something.
